Anyone who’s attended an institution of higher learning has probably played beer pong at one point during their career. It’s something to do between classes and, of course, it’s an excuse to drink beer…as if the average 18-year-old really needs one. But for a suburban Chicago man, 27-year-old Manus Shannon, the game never really lost its appeal. Playing drinking games with a popped collar, he seems to be the type who longs for the good 0ld days and the ivy-covered walls of academe. And he seems to take his beer pong seriously, too . . .

As everyone who’s played the game knows, part of the fun is distracting your opponent when he’s shooting. And as the official rules of beer pong make perfectly clear, you can do a lot to throw off the other side, subject to a few limitations:

It’s probably been a while since Shannon Unfortunately for Shannon, distraction rule VI must have escaped his notice, because brandishing a handgun probably violates Cook County law.

Shannon, 27, was playing beer pong at a Fourth of July party in Roseland about 9:20 p.m. Saturday when he pulled out a 9mm semiautomatic gun, according to police and prosecutors.

Shannon began waving the gun in his opponent’s face to distract the 24-year-old South Chicago man during his turn, Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Monday.

The opponent pushed Shannon away, and as he did, the gun went off — striking the opponent in his finger and a 20-year-old Roseland man in his shoulder, prosecutors said.

Shannon’s chilling in the Cook County jail right now, waiting for friends and family to post a $100,000 bond on his reckless discharge of a firearm charge. We assume that the firing of the pistol ended the game prematurely, what with two people being shot and all. And since we don’t know the score of the game at the time, there’s no way of knowing if the one cup penalty for a violation of local law would have lost the game for him.

But we’re the compassionate types. And since we don’t want Mr. Shannon to come away from the match empty-handed, we’ll be sending him an IGOTD trophy to commemorate the fireworks he touched off on July 4th.

  1. Manus will have several months to further his education in another “institute of higher learning” — the Cook County Jail.

  2. According to the story he did not have a valid carry permit, so Rahm can’t blame it on Illinois’ new lax gun laws. Phew!
But he used to have an Arkansas one…

  3. I believe this being Chicago and all, possession of a gun would be enough to take him out of the sport for quite a few years.

  4. And Father Pfleger immediately filed suit against Evanston to halt beer pong games spreading from Northwestern.

  5. 22, college grad, never drank while there. Had a sip or 2 of Christmas ale at home, but that is it.

Alchoholic drinks taste terrible from what I can tell.

    • When I was 22 I thought whiskey tasted gross. Just wait.

I sip bourbon like it’s iced tea now. When I get bored with it I go straight for the Islay single malts like Laphroaig. It tastes like a campfire made of burning peat that had wet seaweed thrown on it, and then a bucket of sea water. God I love it.

      • I’m a Kentucky native stationed in SC, every time I open a bottle of the bluegrass’ best I smile and enjoy the sweet elixer of my people lol

        • Nectar indeed, and it tastes better with banjos. Two things on my bucket list are distillery tours of Kentucky and Scotland. Not sure I can afford the Scotland part, but I’m keeping the dream alive. What I like about bourbon is that you don’t need to pay a lot to get a great one. Usually. A few years back I would buy Van Winkle Special Reserve 12YO at the local liquor store for about 50 bucks every few months, for a treat. Then GQ went and called it the best bourbon in the world and it got rare and now hipsters pay $25 a shot for it at bars and the bottles go for $350+ on eBay. Silly. The hype means I can’t drink it any more. Not that I care that much because it was only a hair or two better than Elijah Craig 12YO which you can get for less than $30 a bottle here. Maybe the best bang for buck bourbon there is. I like Blanton’s too, when my wealthier brother-in-law buys it. But I’m not that fancy most of the time.

      • Nah, I’m never gonna get into the alchohol.

It is expensive, so why aquire that taste? (more money for bullets!!)

If you drink too much you tend to lose control of yourself and may do regrettable things (Irresponsible imho)

        It is sort of poisonous.

Now if you like it thats fine, its just not for me.

Admittedly I did enjoy that one time I made that cider and it got slightly hard….. But other than that pass.

        • As long as I don’t have to pronounce it to ask where to find it. I was embarrassed enough when I found out I’d been pronouncing CAOL ILA wrong for a year. Now I know why the clerk was always smiling when I said it.

        • Love peated Scotch! Just finished off a bottle of Ardbeg, will have to look up Bunnahabhain.

  6. (M)Anus may have a different understanding of accidental discharge when he goes to a federal taxpayer funded higher learning facility.

  7. I hope this fool has access to plenty of personal lubricant while in jail for the next 10 years. His victim will have plenty of physical therapy trying to get his strength and agility back.
