Having to sit through an entire soccer game is enough to piss pretty much anyone off. Did you catch that tense Senegal v. Uruguay tilt over the weekend? Yeah, it was all I could do to keep from putting a round through my flat screen, too. But I managed to restrain myself. Somehow. Jaime Gutierrez, however, didn’t exhibit quite as much self control at a northwest Chicago match yesterday morning . . .

chicagotribune.com has all the details:

Officers were called to a park near the harbor around 7 a.m. Sunday. Witnesses told officers that there had been an argument during a soccer game, and Gutierrez had pulled a gun from a red backpack and walked up and down the field yelling, “I have a gun, I have a gun,” to the players and their families, including children, police said.

Sure, Jaime may be quick to brandish his piece, but no one can accuse him of failure to cooperate with law enforcement.

Gutierrez told police he is a gang member.

Guess he figured gangs operate in the Windy City with impunity these days anyway, so what’s the harm?

Let’s run down the charges the CPD’s heaped on Jaime’s narrow shoulders in the wake of Sunday’s hijinks: unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, misdemeanor reckless conduct, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card. That oughta keep his public defender busy. And he’ll probably be behind bars for a good three months or so, given Cook County SOP – assuming he isn’t already out on bail.

As you’d expect, we’ll be forwarding an IGOTD trophy to Mr. Gutierrez at our earliest convenience. And our guess is that as soon as he’s sprung, it will take the admitted gang member about seventeen minutes to procure another de-serialized gat for his toting pleasure. So if you don’t carry a gun (and if you’re in the Chicagoland area, we know you don’t) you might want to stay away from soccer games on the near north side. Better yet, just stay away from them no matter where you are. You’ll be a lot happier.

  1. what! how is this possible! it was against the law for him to have that gun. rahm needs to be fired for not doing his job. imagine, a gangbanger ignoring the law and endangering all those families. i guess all the other folks there were law abiding, which made them helpless if this moron had decided to start a massacre.

  2. There are so many things wrong with this picture I don’t even know where one would begin.
At least Gutierrez didn’t have a problem telling the truth when he was questioned. but none the less, it scares me to think that people like this will walk within a couple of months and pretty much go back to exactly what they were doing before.

  3. There is NO WAY this could be true… you must be fabricating all of this because guns are illegal in Chicago which means guns do not exist, so how could he have even done this?

    Q.E.D.

    – John

  4. whay is he considered a gun owner? as the headline implies he is one of us. he’s not. he didn’t have at least the FOID to own or possess a gun legally in Illinois. He isn’t some out of stater passing through who made a mistake.

he is a shithead with a gun, not representative of those who read and contribute to this site. so dan, on this one your headline is wrong.

It should be dumbshit criminal of the day. . . don’t act like the antis and smear us with this guys actions

    • FOID is illegal. There is no valid law that can restrict your right to keep and bear arms in this country. You’re fighting the wrong fight and doing more damage than good with this comment. If you accept that there are valid reasons why someone should not have a gun to protect themselves, then you are against us and are “not representative of those who read and contribute to this site”. Don’t sh!t where you eat.

  5. gives support to my idea that simply being a gang member should be a felony crime. simply being id’d as a gang member should be enough to send you to prison regardless of what you were doing when id’d.

      Gang: noun
      1. a group or band.
      2. a group of youngsters or adolescents who associate closely, often exclusively, for social reasons, especially such a group engaging in delinquent behavior.
      3. a group of people with compatible tastes or mutual interests who gather together for social reasons.
      4. a group of persons working together; squad; shift.
      5. a group of persons associated for some criminal or other antisocial purpose.

The police, the army, the navy, the marines, youth soccer teams, Metallica, Christians, republicans, gun lovers, family members, and anyone with a facebook page…

That’s right. They’re all gangs. That includes you.

Your idea is part of the same problem that plagues the people who support the right to keep and bear arms. People who have no idea what they’re talking about trying to ban stuff that they think should be illegal because they think it sounds/looks bad. Your argument gives support to the idea of repealing the first amendment.

      • Well really when someone says “I’m in a gang” they mean I’m a gangster. And I don’t think anyone needs me to quote Websters on what a gangster is.

  6. A nit to pick….that’s not suburban Chicago, that’s in the city. I used to live a stone’s throw from Montrose Harbor.

  7. Call the IGOTD Award back. He didn’t earn it.,

What he did was criminal, not irresponsible.

Deliberately threating people’s lives/safety, in my way of thinking crosses the line.,

    I’ll pay the postage.

  8. “Gutierrez told police he is a gang member.
Guess he figured gangs operate in the Windy City with impunity these days anyway, so what’s the harm?”

Actually, its because Gutierrez knows his gang boss is in cahoots with the City Council, who in turn control the Chicago police and the court system. He’s just letting the cops know he’ll be out on bail before the arresting officer clocks off his shift.

  9. This didn’t take place in the Northwest side at all.

This happened in the heart of Northside on the gold coast. 1 mile north of wrigleyville just South of Uptown Lincoln Park (The park, not the neighborhood).

    • The article never said it did, it said the perpetrator resided on the NW side. It also didnt happen on the Gold Coast, it happened in Uptown. Gold Coast is about 3 miles south, from North Ave. to Division.
