Incendiary Image of the Day: Waving the Bloody Shirt Edition

Kipsap Sun cartoon (courtesy

We use the expression “wave the bloody shirt” a lot here at TTAG. It highlights the fact that proponents of gun control use the blood of innocents – without context – to further their cause. In the cartoon above, the Kitsap Sun newspaper is laying the blame for the murder of two-year-old Kaden Lum at the feet of “America’s gun culture.” It’s the same baseless smear mooted by Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams in a child death negligent discharge – only with a gleeful eagle/devil image. Is there any level to which the antis will not stoop to further their civilian disarmament agenda? No. No there isn’t. BTW: Lum’s family is pissed. [h/t Icabodwa]

  1. avatar Colt Magnum says:

Yes, the family is indeed pissed. Also, the killer is still at large.

  2. avatar Sexual Tyrannosaurus says:

    Speaking of murdered children

Wonder if Chief Williams would care to comment on sovereign immunity culture.

    1. avatar Grindstone says:

      Effin’ amen to that.

    2. avatar Joe R. says:

Gun grabbers are usually of the same ilk as those who like to kill kids with scissors before they are fully out of the womb, and they are called Democrats.

If you are from a blue state, you may be part of the problem, if you have a (D) after your name, are a liberal or a rino, the problem is part-of-you, and we blame the worlds problems on people like you.

      1. avatar Pascal says:

Guilt by association then? By that standard all gun owners are aholes that should be in prison because od a few idiots. The whole blue state thing is old. If the population of the urban centers grows to a point where urban voters trump the rest of the state, any red state can turn blue. This is exactly why democrats only care about urban centers.

  3. avatar Rick the Bear says:

“”I feel that the cartoonist used my grandson as a 2-year-old in his cartoon to push their political agenda for the shock effect, and I think that’s deplorable,” [Trammell] said.”

As well he fvcking should. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if a personal tragedy was splashed in the paper to make political points!

  4. I am not surprised by this type of “trick” anymore. the anti gun nuts are loosing the argument and they know it. All they have or ever had have is emotional arguments. They can not point to stats or put up a logical argument. Hens the all emotion bloody shirt argument.

  5. avatar Ralph says:

It’s important to notice that the cartoonist didn’t blame crime or even guns — he (or she or it) blamed gun “culture.” Yes, this is a culture war, pure and simple. They hate us and would prefer to see us gone, by any means necessary.

Me? I blame the shooting death of Walter Scott by Officer Michael Slager on America’s cop culture. I blame the stupidity of editorial cartoonists on America’s lack-of-real-education culture. I blame the Virginia rape hoax on America’s whiny victim culture.

    Shall I go on?

    1. avatar Dustin says:

      “Shall I go on?”

Please do; there’s no such thing as too much truth.

      1. avatar Timmy! says:

“there’s no such thing as too much truth.”

Oh? I learned the hard way that there can be too much truth when asked, “Do these jeans make my butt look big?”

        1. avatar JR_in_NC says:

Tell the person asking that if they don’t want the answer they shouldn’t ask. The Truth matters.

          It’s really not THAT complicated.

        2. avatar Ray says:

The answer is no… your big ass makes your butt look big. Usually leads to dental work.

  6. avatar Oakriver says:

If you are going to use a family’s grief to make a political point perhaps you should first ask the family’s permission.

  7. avatar Out_Fang-Thief says:

Use of a minor child’s real name, without consent or permission, for public, political satire. There was a time, not so long ago, when even thinking about doing something like this would get you fired, and/or a swift kick in the ass for being a soulless prat.

  8. avatar Dustin says:

These people make me wonder if I’ve gone too far… If they were to suffer the fate they keep planning for me, would I turn a blind eye and let it slide? I probably would… How different is that from self-defense?

If anti-rights persons, such as this cartoonist, had their way, everyone different from themselves would be rounded up and gassed. If somehow the tables were turned, I wouldn’t stop it… Is that the social/collective version of self-defense? Or is there no such thing and any time that line is crossed it’s wrong?

Since collectivism is bullshit, I call bullshit on myself. I’ve gone too far because I would let them die. Even reaching the conclusion that “species cleansing” of that nature is wrong, I’d still let them die.

There is not enough blood to slake my hate for them, for all the blood already on their hands, as they blame me and assault my Rights and even my existence…

    1. avatar Tom in Oregon says:

Well said. I feel the same myself and also call BS on myself.

      1. avatar Ralph says:

I feel the same way and I don’t feel bad about it in the least. I may be my brother’s keeper, but I sure as hell am not my enemy’s keeper.

  9. avatar John Teasley says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t really think the cartoon is very good? It isn’t funny, lacks satire, and it does a poor job of linking the gun culture and the tragic death.

A better cartoon would have been Lapierre
behind a podium saying something to the effect of “The real tragedy here is that Obama’s gun laws prevent this infant from having his own gun and being able to defend himself”

    1. avatar dph says:

They only have a circulation of around 30000, what do you expect? Typical small town rag.

    2. avatar doesky2 says:

The Left destroys everything it touches……newspapers, art, movies, language, TV, music, education, health care…..why would satire be exempt?

      1. avatar ThomasR says:

Yep. Liberal/progressivism, a cult of death, destroyers of civilization.

  10. avatar Texsylvanian says:

Funny. I was just arguing with a subordinate over this. Not the explicit topic of this post, rather the depths that anti-rights extremists would go to.

He dismisses the very idea that the RKBA is under threat. I found his naiveté simultaneously amusing and troubling.

  11. avatar dph says:

I live in Kitsap County and Kitsap Sun is run by a bunch of raving lunatic liberals. They were and still are 100% for Gun Control. On the plus side I’m also pretty sure the Kitsap Sun is is doing about as well as the rest of the dead tree media, which is to say they are in critical condition. I only go to their website to check the obits once in a while. Most of their site is pay to view and I only heard about this because it was picked up and ran by their competition in Seattle.

    1. avatar foo dog says:

Letters to editor is getting complaints on cartoon, already.

No can see um, behind paywall..

    2. avatar MacBeth 51 says:

      “I live in Kitsap County”

You have my sympathy. We escaped Kidnapped County about 5 years ago, and haven’t been back since. That’s a good assessment of the Sun. Of course, it just reflects the idiots in Port Orchard

    3. avatar Jeff says:

Yep, this guy is spot on. I lived in Bremerton for most of my life. Both Bremerton and Kitsap County as a whole are overwhelmingly conservative – especially considering the three major Navy bases and healthy military population in the area.

Kitsap Sun just doesn’t know when to shut up. Their editors went gun control crazy after Sandy Hook, and even after getting smashed by readers in their online comments, they just kept at it. Kitsap Sun has been dying as a local paper for years. They try so hard to be Seattle Times Jr. but it’s not what the community needs or wants.

I don’t live in Kitsap County any more, but I used to check up on the Sun’s page every now and then to see what was going on around there. Now you can’t even read news stories without being a subscriber. Forget it.

  12. avatar foo dog says:

    Old saying:

Conservatives believe liberals have bad ideas…
Liberals believe conservatives are bad people.

    Updated for 2015: substitute progressives for liberals…and add;
“And should be deprived of civil rights” to the end, above.

  13. avatar IdahoPete says:

I am shocked, shocked! to discover that the news media lies to promote their anti-freedom agenda! /sarc off/

Hey, this is what they do – this is The Narrative, and they will do anything, no matter how evil, to promote the narrative.

“The narrative is the set of assumptions the press believes in, possibly without even knowing that it believes in them. It’s so powerful because it’s unconscious. It’s not that they get together every morning and decide “These are the lies we tell today”. No, that would be too crude and honest. Rather, it’s a set of casual, nonrigorous assumptions about a reality they’ve never really experienced that’s arranged in such a way as to reinforce their best and most ideal presumptions about themselves and their importance to the system and the way they’ve chosen to live their lives. It’s a way of arranging things a certain way that they all believe in without ever really addressing carefully. It permeates their whole culture. … And the narrative is the bedrock of their culture, the keystone of their faith, the altar of their church. They don’t even know they’re true believers, because in theory they despise the true believer in anything. But they will absolutely destroy anyone who makes them question all that.”
    – from “I, Sniper” by Stephen Hunter

  14. avatar Big-Papa-68 says:

I wouldn’t even try a FREE ” Trial Subscription ” with those retards, just to read their ridiculous story……….

Bunch of ” TYPICAL, LEFT WING, ULTRA LIBERAL, OPRAH LOVING, OBAMA VOTING, BOUGHT & PAID FOR MENTAL CASES ” that should be shut down & any leftover papers FORCED to be used in the Obama’s personal bathroom’s exclusively…..
