My step-daughter recently mentioned Vietnam—as her step-mother’s latest vacation hot spot. “Wasn’t there a war there?” she asked. Let’s give Sasha credit; at least she knows there was a Vietnam War. At least two generations of Americans have never heard of the place. How times have changed. If someone had rolled up to a college campus on this trike in, say, 1968, there would have been instant strife. Nowadays, college kids are mostly mute on America’s military adventures (especially the ones supported or initiated by Barack Obama). They’d probably ask “What movie is that from?” Even so, this image remains incendiary, if only because there are still a few elderly hippies who’d find the rolling homage offensive or, worse, would shake their head in condescending sympathy. What gun is that anyway?
I find the basic knowledge of our country’s history in general to be… lacking. History in schools seems to be more geared towards hundreds of years ago. Romans, Aztecs, Egyptians, etc. I remember when I was going through my American History class back in high school, we covered all of the second World War in… maybe a week? Vietnam was covered in probably a day. Anything else was non existent. Korea? Whats that? Talkin to a new private just last night about a WW2 game he was playing, (as a Marine in the Pacific) “I thought we fought the Germans in World War 2?” “Well, yes, we did. You’ve heard of Pearl Harbor, right?” “ooohhh, yeah” After digging a little deeper to pick his brain, I gathered a few more memorable quotes. “The Revolutionary War? That was against the South, right?” I’ve never shook my head so much in a conversation before in my life. The vast majority of kids I talk to don’t have an inkling of a clue as to what their country has been through, and in this case, the country they serve.
Now that’s a beautiful paint job, I’d love to own that bike.

There are also Vietnamese survivors who might be upset at the reminder of the death and destruction of those years.
Let’s give the education system credit, she probably knows little more than that and even that tiny bit of knowledge greatly exceeds the median.
