“Trying to get bills passed on gun violence prevention in this state is excruciatingly slow. I don’t think it’s going to happen in my lifetime.” – Miranda Viscoli, co-president of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence in Clovis shooting sparks push to hold parents accountable for securing guns [via krqe.com]

  1. Trying to pass a law to redefine violent crime as ‘gun violence’ is virtually impossible in a state where more than half the population is functionally literate.

There, I fixed it for ya.

  2. Crime is aggression that causes harm to another person. Such criminals are already ignoring lots of “laws,” and are not going to be impressed with more of them. The tool used for this aggression is irrelevant. But the best tool to defend oneself from that aggression is clearly the gun, preferably in the context of self responsible lives in general.

The purpose of such “laws” – as we’ve said so often – is not prevention of “gun violence” or any other kind… its sole purpose is to create a helpless, compliant population that can be much more easily controlled.

    • Good points. I’m not a legal or criminal expert, but assault, battery, stabbing and shooting another are all illegal. Making guns illegal won’t prevent violence any more than making assault and battery illegal did.
Gun ownership is all but gone in the UK, and Aus and NZ regions, and gun violence still persists, and now they have age requirements to buy butterknives. Stabbings in the UK and NZ are so common now, that “constables”, who had for generations opted not to carry a sidearm by choice, are standard-issued “stab-proof vests” to every officer.

I’m not sure what their end goal is, besides banning weapons outright, but whatever it is, it surely isn’t anchored in reality or rationality.

      • Assault IS “violence.” There are many different forms and too many people do not see the aggression in all of them. A good illustration is the old saying about your “right” to swing your fist ends at the point where the fist hits my nose. Now, it doesn’t matter how soft or hard that touch is for it to be assault. Just as “self defense” can be a very complex, even confusing thing, so can any incident of aggression. And, in fact, the defender often ALSO engages in aggressive actions to some extent… That’s just human nature.

A big problem comes when people – on either side of the issues – want to reduce that complexity down to a few cut and dried points, black and white. Unfortunately, as nice as that would be in some cases, it doesn’t work in real life or with real people.

      • All but gone is misleading and wrong for Aus and NZ. Particularly if you focus on the criminal element the % of population that own guns goes up immeasurably.

  3. That’s ok honey, I’m sure David Duke is really disappointed about how slowly his efforts to reintroduce Jim Crow are going too.

  4. NM is one of the poorest states in the nation, Santa Fe acts like San Fransisco East. Those on the government tit will fall in line to keep getting their checks.

  5. These gun-control fascists are part of the larger, anti-American, Liberal Terrorists™ that make up the modern democrat party. They pose an existential threat to our Constitutional Republic, as they attempt to subvert our US Constitution, every chance they get. They are truly the most dangerous enemies America has ever faced. They will have to be “dealt” with, one way or another, and sooner rather than later. “If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, so my child may know peace”.

  6. “I don’t think it’s going to happen in my lifetime.”
As an avowed enemy of American, the rule of law, and the US Constitution, let’s pray your “lifetime” expires in the not too distant future. I’d settle for tomorrow.

    Let’s hope she’s correct. Cent’anni!

  8. It is difficult to pass state legislation intended to suppress the free exercise of a constitutionally enumerated right, when the citizens of a state value that right. The level of difficulty increases by an order of magnitude, when one forgets to take one’s meds. I present a brief checklist:
    1) Take meds
    2) Feed cats
    3) Memorize the lie of the day

It is important to follow the checklist exactly. Imposing draconian criminal penalties on law-abiding citizens is well nigh impossible if one eats the cat food and gives one’s meds to one’s feline children. It is even worse to garble the lie of the day. One runs the risk of telling the truth. This could result in Shannon’s Sugar Daddy spending his dollars elsewhere and cat food is expensive.

  9. Ummm New Mexico, the land of enchantment, and the place that the plague of West coast commies seem to avoid and go to Colorado or Oregon instead, thank G-d!!

  10. New Mexico is a weird State. I was born and raised there but fled to Texas as soon as possible. The weather is fantastic, food is outstanding and that is about all it has to offer. If you ever want to time travel go visit, you will be 25 years in the past and will have to learn the local language to get along. Repeat after me; “I know huh?” (used when agreeing with someone) “a la” and “not even” (used when agreeing or disagreeing with someone). “get down from the car” (used to describe exiting a vehicle, no matter how tall or low to the ground said vehicle is.) “don’t go throw it” (I am not really sure what this is used for, other than you will hear it A LOT). “gimmie a Coke” (when ordering ANY soft drink)… good lord I could do this ALL DAY…. but seriously, order some Green Chile

  11. GOOD. The laws you want passed would, at best, either do absolutely nothing constructive (or destructive) or, at worst, be counter-productive and actually make things measurably worse.

I sincerely hope you are stymied forever and ever, unto the heat death of the universe.
