After yesterday post on California’s foie gras ban, TTAG commentator Henry Bowman offered the best possible advice for American politicians: don’t just do something, stand there! Fortunately, thankfully, most of the headline legislation on the Hill these days is nothing more than political grandstanding. To wit: “House Democrats said Tuesday they will offer an amendment to push to overturn stand-your-ground self-defense laws in states like Florida.” How could Uncle Sam mess around with states’ rights like that? The  washingtontimes.com knows . . .

“‘Shoot-first’ laws have already cost too many lives. In Florida alone, deaths due to self-defense have tripled since the law was enacted. Federal money shouldn’t be spent supporting states with laws that endanger their own people,” said Reps. Raul Grijalva of Arizona and Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the two Democrats who are offering the legislation. “This is no different than withholding transportation funds from states that don’t enforce seat-belt laws.”

There’s not a chance in hell this legislative rider will make it on the bus. But it serves an invaluable purpose: identifying the enemies of the Second Amendment.

Those who purposely misrepresent Stand Your Ground laws as a licence to kill. Pols who would gladly remove our right to self-defense, replacing the words “stand your ground” with “kneel before the state.” If pro-ATF expansion Grijalva and Ellison and their supporters scoff, if they don’t understand their own agenda, that’s even scarier.

Thank God for gridlock.

  1. Here are a couple of good quotes from Winston Churchill that the
enemies of liberty should consider, because we’re not rolling over,
nor will we be lead peacefully into to their dark good night ; “If
you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood
shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too
costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with
all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.
There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is
no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as
slaves. ” “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We
shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and the oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the
air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall
fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we
shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the
hills; we shall never surrender. “

    • A World War 2 Army Veteran, Mr. Bob Strait of Tulsa, Oklahoma and
his Wife of 65 years were the Victims of a Home Invasion. The 20
Year Old Criminal, who Invaded their Home, Sexually Assaulted and
Murdered the 80 year Old Wife and Mother. Mr Strait was beaten
severely and later Died of his Wounds and those include a Broken
Heart. This was one of our genuine Hero’s , a man that had fought
in the D-Day Invasion as a Paratrooper, receiving a Bronze Star for
Vaor. Can you even imagine the pain of seeing your Wife Raped by a
Home Invader and then seeing her Killed! If we do away with Stand
Your Ground Laws, you may get to be the next Victim. I do not care
what Law they Pass, I will Defend my Life and the Lives of my Loved
ones. The Tyrone Woodforks of this world can go straight to HELL!

  2. This has been a galvanizing moment. I’m sick and tired of the PC
crap over the last 50 years – exactly where did it get us? Resist,
resist, resist, no compromise, no more patience. Thugs are thugs.
the pols stole the country with their liberal silly nonsense.

  3. The lawmakers allusion to Trayvon doesn’t even have anything to do
with SYG. In Florida if you can’t escape an attack, then it’s tough
cookies (for the attacker) if there is a disparity of force or if
you perceive “grave bodily injury” and decide to use deadly force.
I’ve noticed that the media and uninformed masses have largely shut
up since more information has been released showing Zimmerman was
actually trying to leave the scene rather than chase Martin.

  4. In a way they’re right. I mean, why do we let the federal
government bully the states into toeing the line on things like
seat belt laws, minimum drinking age, No Child Left Behind, etc.

    • Because the states have become addicted to “Federal Money”.
“Federal Money”, that’s American taxpayer funds that Washington
uses to bribe or threaten states to do DC’s bidding. and
unfortunately the states are all, every $%%#%# one of them,
addicted to it. They are more addicted to “free” money than they
      are to “freedom.”

      • End the Federal Reserve…end the free fiat money. It says Federal
for a reason…it enables the expansion of the FEDERAL govt. Or at
least allow states to create their own competing currencies.

    • Shoot first? Please link me to any law in these here United States that allows an armed citizen to use deadly force when they’re not facing the threat of imminent, credible deadly force. Sure you can “shoot first.” But if you do, you must face the consequences. Just like a criminal and dare-I-say-it law enforcement officer.

  5. According to the FBI stats, the murder rates had gone down while
justifiable homicides have gone up. Looks to me like more of the
victims are fighting back! Some people would prefer to continue a
higher murder rate. As a woman who fought back, I prefer the stand
    your ground law.

    • Politicians like these love high murder rates and scared, dependent
constituents. It’s how they stay in business.

    • Charmaine, if I’m ever in another foxhole, I want you next to me. You are a fighter. I’m posting a link to your story of survival further down.

  6. So if deaths due to self defense increased x3 can someone kindly
show me the report that shows where death by crime has gone down
    x3?

    • Huh? These deaths are not equal, nor should we care about the
ratio. If 100 times more criminals are killed for every law abiding
citizen, I consider this an even greater win.

  7. There are “Shoot-first” laws? I’ve never heard of one of those. I’d
like to see the code. There are, in fact, “duty-to-retreat” laws.
That term needs no hyperbole or mischaracterization to make it
    sound bad.

  8. Have the actual number of self defense shootings increased or have
more shootings been deemed justified as self defense?

  9. Read the Story about Bob Strait and his Wife of 65 years being
Victimized by a 20 Year Old Home Invader. Then tell me what you see
wrong with STG. I wish Mr. Strait had been able to defend his Wife
from being Raped and Murdered by this Gangsta Thug. But he instead,
also died of his wounds, which included a broken heart. I will not
hesitate to eliminate any Home Invading Threat to my Family. I have
learned my lesson from the sweet innocent looking Tyrone Woodfork.
All of you who wish to be Victims… LOL.

  10. Speaking of enemies of gun rights, Dick Lugar just got his sorry
rear tossed out last night in favor of Richard Mourdock! (Looks
like we trade one Dick for another…)

  11. My favorite congressional process…gridlock. When people ask me
what I hope from Congress the answer is always the same…as much
    gridlock as possible.

    • Agreed. When I say this, people always ask “but, don’t you want things to get better?”. My reply is that I just don’t want them to get worse.

  12. After Grijalva threw his support for illegal immigrants instead of
his constituents back when SB1070 came around I’ve been looking
forward to him not being my Congresscritter. This time next year he
won’t. Unfortunately it will be due to redistricting instead of
    voting the bum out.

  13. Could it pass, sure it could! How much crap from this adminstation
that has already passed when it was thought that there was no way
that it could. Dianne freakout is a good example, “We have to pass
it before to find out whats in it!”, crap that goes on in
Washington nowdays. Everybody had better get active and call your
    REPs!!!

  14. “‘Shoot-first’ laws have already cost too many lives. In Florida
alone, deaths due to self-defense have tripled since the law was
enacted. Federal money shouldn’t be spent supporting states with
laws that endanger their own people.” At least he’s honest by
calling criminals and murderers the government’s “own people.” This
is hardly a surprise; politicians and leftists especially love
scared, endangered citizens as much as they love criminals; it
keeps them dependent on the government and willing to give up their
rights. These scumbags are opportunists, traitors, and far, far
worse than any criminal who would be a “victim” of SYG. On the
other hand, we should all head that shirt and remember to “look to
Trayvon.” Modern gun owners need to remember and realize that just
because you’re morally, lawfully, and logically right, that doesn’t
mean the media, politicians, sheep, and other sorry excuses of
sentient beings won’t try to crucify you. Cowards hate being
reminded that not everyone is like them.

  15. “…deaths due to self defense have tripled since the law was
enacted. ” Sooo… what’s the problem? If it’s justified self
defense, wouldn’t that be a good thing? Do they consider dead bad
guys and alive good guys a bad thing?

  16. We can’t have a situation where law abiding citizens are on
anything near even footing with criminals intent on doing them
harm. Lacking in ethics with the element of surprise isn’t enough
of an edge for criminals, we need to add second-guessing about
pulling the trigger due to possible jail time on top of things
stacked against law abiding citizens attempting to defend
    themselves.

  17. We need to toss out all the local gun grabbers from office. This starts with every city and town in America. Congress and the Senate don’t make the laws which are banning guns. Our local Sheriffs and legislators sitting in your state capital are! For 2A I would ask any presidential candidate this: What are you going to do to wipe the slate clean of the some 200,000+ laws on the books today infringing on our 2nd amendment rights, and return the authority to the federal government where it belongs? My idea is this.. If you want to repeal 2A then fine do it through due process or get off our backs! I don’t think anyone will join up on banning SYG or castle laws at the federal level. They are weak and impotent as it is.

  18. This is not really surprising. The Antis never miss a photo opportunity. I am hoping some things come out during the Zimmerman trial that may shed more light on little Trayvon.

  19. Laws named after people are always a bad idea. They are invaribly poorly conceived kneejerk reactions to some reacent event and usally do nothing but provide a photo op for politions while incoviencing innocent people with unecessary regulations.
