Next hike I’m switching back to a backpack or make the kids carry their stuff next time. I ended up putting the mags in the bag because the mag carrier was printing at the 9:00 position under a flannel shirt. It was a good learning experience.
Inside today’s EDC rests a trauma plate insert of AR500 IIIA armor. At first, I thought that backpack insert must really weigh things down. Obviously, AR500 steel is quite heavy. And ounces feel like pounds and pounds equal pain when hiking. However, looking closer, this is a IIIA soft body armor insert and weighs only 1.6 pounds at 1/4″ thick. Writing up these EDCs is going to cost me money.
In addition to the armored backpack, he’s got a SIG P229 in an inside-the-waistband rig by Alien Gear. While I’ve never worn an Alien Gear product, I’ve heard many good things about them. Jeremy S. reviewed two of them right here at TTAG (1 and 2) and gave each 5-stars.

Not really sure I trust AR500’s soft armor but then I’ve never tested it and probably won’t since I have no need for it.

also you can’t go wrong with a Ka-Bar, I had one with me in Iraq. It opened a lot of MRE’s in its day.

I might be the only guy that ever liked ham and motherfuckers. Ka Bar worked as a field knife. Just go easy on the tip. I still had my boy scout knife when I went touring with my rich uncles firm. The can opener worked real good.

CA. Probably safer in Iraq or Astan. If he is hiking in SoCal he has a very real chance of encountering illegals in the boonies. You know, those folks that are killing our tourists and cops.

There are potentially dangerous animals in the woods.
Both 2 legged and 4 legged.
Shooting a rabid animal may be necessary if it attacks.
From raccoons to coyotes to dogs to to illegal aliens, a 9 mm pistol is a good choice.
Once we get to mountain lions and bears, a rifle or 10 mm pistol is better.
Anyone who doesn’t carry a gun when hiking is just a hippie yuppy waiting to get attacked by a 2 or 4 legged animal. Your spandex ain’t gonna help you. I think his edc for hiking is on point.
