As Mickey Haller proclaims in The Lincoln Lawyer, everyone lies. Whenever I read a story involving criminal minds (or lack thereof) I take it with a grain of salt the size of a glacial erratic. To wit: “A Florida high school student wrestled a loaded gun away from another teen on the bus ride home this week and was slapped with a suspension in return. The 16-year-old Cypress Lake High student in Fort Myers, Fla. told authorities there was ‘no doubt’ he saved a life after grappling for the loaded .22 caliber revolver being aimed point-blank at another student on Tuesday. ‘I think he was really going to shoot him right then and there,’ said the suspended student, not identified by WFTX because of safety concerns. ‘Not taking no pity.'” And what, pray tell, led to this armed encounter .  . .

The student said the suspect, a football player, threatened to shoot a teammate because he had been arguing with his friend.

Authorities confirmed to WFTX the weapon was indeed loaded, and the arrest report stated the suspect, identified by WVZN-TV as Quadryle Davis, was “pointing the gun directly” at the other student and “threatening to shoot him.”

That’s when, the teen told the station, he and two others tackled the suspect and wrestled the gun away. The next day, all three were suspended.

“How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?” he asked.

How are they going to teach Florida’s children to speak grammatically? Somehow I don’t think the Florida public school system will be addressing that issue in the near future. But when it comes to violent incidents, they have an app for that . . .

The school’s referral slip said he was given an “emergency suspension” for being involved in an “incident” with a weapon. Lee County School District spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said in a statement that “If there is a potentially dangerous situation, Florida law allows the principal to suspend a student immediately pending a hearing.”

“Those kids had to fight for their lives,” the mother of the suspended teen said. “All the kids that was involved in this they should have a pat on their backs because they did the right thing to save someone from burying their child.”

Maybe. Maybe not. I’m no lawyer, but I reckon there’s some sort of confidentiality clause that prevents journalistic access to that info. What are the odds there’ll be a follow-up story revealing the full deets of this close encounter of the firearms kind?

As a blogger, I shouldn’t judge, but what does Rush call this sort of thing? Right; the drive-by media. Meanwhile, I wonder if there’s any gang angle to this story . . .

Anyway, it behooves gun owners to remember that the mainstream media is fueled by righteous indignation on both sides of the firearms divide. We need to keep our friends close, our BS detectors closer.

  1. I read this story a couple of hours ago, and nowhere was there any indication of a suspension for the gunman. Just a press oversight, maybe.

But my first thought was that the school/school district got upset because the (planned?) shooting was FOILED – back to the drawing board.

    Not sayin’. Just askin’.

    • He was taken into custody by police and transported to a juvenile detention center, pending a criminal hearing. However, the charge was only currently “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon “without intent” to kill”.

    • William, if you’re going to say this was a foiled false flag attack, don’t hint at it. Say it right out loud so we can all adequately judge your level of crazy.

      • You don’t know much about the ways governments work do you? I doubt this was a false flag, but the feds have many documented cases of doing exactly that.

        • Yep, and that’s always the response I get when someone hints at it and I call it bullshit. “Well, maybe this one isn’t, but ‘they’ve’ done it before.”

This one, Sandy Hook, Aurora, the list goes on. At some point someone has tried to claim that every one of them was a false flag op. Stupid, and counterproductive.

  2. I guess if the mass shooter is a football star in today’s screwed up sports only schools you get a free pass and if they try to stop you because your a football star then your the villain.

  3. This is why people in general stop doing the right thing. This young man had the courage to get involved and stopped a crime from being committed. Yet the politically Stupid punish him. The teen should get a medal the principal should at the very least be fired.

    • This is the only appropriate response: ALL of the parents (of the students of that school) should show up quite literally with pitchforks and torches and demand the immediate termination of the school employees who ordered the suspension.

      I am NOT kidding.

  4. 30 years as a Paramedic and ER nurse. Never, not once, did the press reports even resemble what I saw with my own eyes. FWIW.

    • At least the Pulitzer Prize candidate noted that they were on the bus home, so it must have otherwise been just another typical safe day in Florida high-schools history.

  5. I don’t generally tend to read too much into this. Schools tend to have a policy (for good reason) to suspend everyone involved in an incident, armed or unarmed, right or wrong, any incident they feel is a serious one.

The usual reason is because until they get a grasp on what happened leading up to the incident, they can’t rule out the potential of some kind of retaliation or continuation the next day if anyone shows up.

So yeah, those kids did nothing wrong by tackling him, but how does the school know that they didn’t piss off the gunman’s group of friends? Would his friends want to retaliate against the two the next day?

The school /IS/ responsible for their safety, and in this case, they’ll suspend them to keep them out of the campus environment until they’re sure they understand what happened and who might be involved, and especially if there’s anyone else that might threaten the two kids.

Now I’m not saying this isn’t often abused and misused by school administrators, but I don’t /YET/ see any wrongdoing here.

    • I agree with your overall point but they could just as easily give them a few days off vs something that will be a negative mark on thier record.

    • I understand and agree with your reasoning about protecting the students from retaliation. However, a suspension is a disciplinary action where students get all zeros for assignments and test during their suspension. This is not the correct response for students who defended themselves and those around them from threat of great bodily harm or death.

The school should take one of two courses of action:
      (1) Order the students to stay at home and get full credit or a chance to make up any homework and tests.
      — or better yet —
      (2) Have the students return to school as normal and have two capable adults “shadow” the students all day for a few days.

This stuff really isn’t that hard.

    • They should come up with a better term like ‘temporary safety time-out’ or some non-disciplinary term like that.

Maybe this is the left doing their best to demonize self responsibility, including the responsibility for self-defense. Very little pisses them off more, the idea that I should own the ability to defend myself. To them, I should submit to my masters as they are the only ones who are ordained to protect me, and only they should have guns.

  6. The insane school systems have a anti-bully policy, and usually nothing happens to the bully except for being told to stop, most of the time. So, when your kid decides enough is enough and fights back to stop the bullying… guess what… your kid gets the worst of it in punishment.

I cannot say whether this incident is fact or bologna… It could be certain facts have not been passed on to any of us, lies or otherwise. If true, see above. If false, well… perhaps they did finally get something right for a change.

  7. i would say that i am baffled but im not. in the 2013 America wrong is right and wright is wrong. not shocked, just disappointed. a hero is treated like a villain.

  8. What does grammar have to do with this story, and why criticize this kid? He did something right. The bottom line is, kid with gun stopped, nobody injured.

    • I don’t understand that either. Makes the Robert no better than the principal who suspended the kid for doing the right thing.

  9. that is perfect liberal logic: you should let a murder take place and let the cops clean up the mess.

Helping to stop a murder, that’s a paddlin’.

  10. We have some of the worst people in this country, in positions of authority, systematically destroying the spirit of this country.

  11. This is Florida, we know how well stand your ground works, so I wouldn’t expect any better of this. Hopefully this can be stricken from his record. The guy should have gotten a letter of gratitude from the school system, Randy

  12. There is no longer any common sense in this “FUCKed” up country!
ACLU is against Christians, China owns the “so called” United States that has to “cow toe” to the Muslums, and Wal of China Mart refuses to sell items produced in the USA.

    WTF????????

    • ‘We’ repeatedly fight bloody ten year wars, then call in the other side for a conference to negotiate exactly how we intend to lose the war. Why shouldn’t we do all that other stuff?

  13. Having only recently gotten out of High school, the way I see it is this.

He attacked a football player. That’s all there is too it, that is why he is in trouble.

Football players are like politicians in the way they do not get punished. In my high school one of the guys who catch footballs (honestly I do not know the name… Sports are boring and I was in chess club but also 6 foot in 9th grade so no one messed with me, but they messed with my friends) broke another guys arm in a fight, the guy who’s arm was broken got suspended for 2 weeks, the football player got an in school suspension. And our football teamed sucked, we haven’t had a winning season since last century. The assholes who planned the new high school put the practice field on top of a Native American burial ground. We could have had free archeology classes done by the state university and an in-school museum but the practice field was more important.

He attacked a football player. Even if the football player was actively pointing a gun at someone, that can’t be allowed without being punished.

    Football makes high schools stupid.

    • “We haven’t had a winning season since last century.”

“They put the practice field on top of a Native American burial ground.”

Does nobody else see the obvious conclusion here?

      CURSED!

    • As I understand it, the would-be shooter, the potential victim, and the student got suspended afer thwarting the student, are all on the football team.

  14. a) As the school spokesperson says, “…Florida law allows…” suspension. Not “requires”. So the responsibility for the decision rests squarely on the shoulders of the principal.

    b) How about naming said principal, so that if this turns out to be a stupid idea, they will be appropriate opprobrium. Of course, if it turns out to have been a good idea, they deserve praise. My money is on the first alternative.

  15. When I first read about this my first thought was that the kids
were suspended for interfering. Because of them, the anti-rights
crowd doesn’t have a new victim to stand on.

  16. We do not know all the facts…but getting suspended for disarming somebody who pointed a loaded gun at another student, i.e. threatening this person with death, sounds quite “unusual” and appears to be contrary to common sense…

    • But we know the three students who disarmed the gunman were given ’emergency suspensions’ for being ‘involved in an “incident” with a weapon. So my question is was the student that the gunman allegedly aimed the gun at suspended as well? If not, why not? He was certainly involved, so if anyone other than the gunman should be suspended due to the incident, it should be the alleged target.

  17. There’s plenty of stupid rolling around in public schools, but this isn’t among it. They suspend everyone involved, in order to avoid round 2 on campus the next day. Period, end of story.

You’re better off staying with the pop-tart “gun” story…

  18. Presuming that this story is as it has been portrayed, it’s an example of one of the two dangers in government. When the rules are rigid without discretion, idiocy of this nature is the result. The other danger is when government employees have too much discretion and get to act on their whims. The solution to both dangers is to reduce what government is allowed to do.

By the way, RF, are you referring to Rush’s song, “Test for Echo,” or did you have that radio host in mind?

  19. Seems to me that this could be likened to administrative leave for an peace officer who is involved in a use/discharge of a firearm. Gives the administration a chance to sort out the details and make sure everything is A-OK before everyone involved goes back “on duty.”

    • Yep. And make sure the would-be shootah’s buds don’t take the kid out during first period the next day.

      • That is exactly what it is.

This is the school system I went through. A couple of the high schools were so bad that you couldn’t have backpacks. North Fort Myers High and Cypress Lake were actually very nice schools.

  20. Not that I expect it to have any significant impact, but I sent the following e-mail to Principal Tracy Perkins of Cypress High School in Fort Myers, FL:

    Dear Principal Tracy Perkins,

I have become aware of a news story that reports that three Cypress High students on a school bus managed to disarm another student, identified as one Quadryle Davis, who was pointing a loaded .22 revolver at another student with whom he had some kind of beef. According to the news story, one of the students who disarmed the would-be gunman has been suspended. If the news story is indeed an accurate account of what has occurred, I would simply like to go on record as failing to see what purpose is served by suspending any of the students who likely prevented a school shooting. Certainly you need to take a close look at Quadryle Davis, but punishing any one of those who thwarted Davis’s evidently violent intent? For shame, Principal Perkins.

  21. No Gang angle. I don’t live far from the school – half of it is a center for the Arts.

Also, the suspension is more of a cool down period to protect the other two students in all likelihood.

  22. The school is a state-run indoctrination center. It looks like it’s message is pretty clear… don’t fight back.

Now, why would the government want to propagandize children to meekly submit to armed aggressors instead of resisting? Why, indeed.

    • Well of course, that’s what the schools have been teaching kids to do in the face of violence for a while now. From first grade all the way through highschool, the policy as I was commanded was if someone attacks you, just sit passively with your arms at your sides and take it until “help arrives”. That is literally what were we told to do.

How disgusted are you by that? Me too.

  23. Mr. Farago says “How are they going to teach Florida’s children to speak grammatically?”

Uhh, they are speaking grammatically. It is just that their dialect of English has a slightly different grammar than yours. Please read an introductory sociolinguistics text so you can understand how language develops and changes over time, and so you don’t jump to conclusions about the intelligence of others without good evidence. The fact that people speak differently than you does not make their dialect “wrong,” it doesn’t make them stupid, and it doesn’t make you smart.

    • I agree, unfortunately this kid who acted as a hero (based on current reports) not only gets suspended, now he is being made fun of by the owner of a site touted to be in favor of gun rights and self defense with firearms…
