The response to our Reader Gun Review Contest was, well, overwhelming. We received twice the number of reviews we’ve gotten in past contests. And as always, the quality produced by our uber-knowlegeable readers was extremely impressive.
That made picking a winner difficult. Some of the worthiest entries came from readers such as David Blanton, Hoplopfheil, Chris Hamilton and D.J. But pick one we must and the winner of the contest and a SIG SAUER P229 Legion Series pistol is Matt M. for his Steyr L9-A1 review. Congrats to Matt and thanks to everyone who entered.

I submitted an entry (CZ-82) that never got published. Given that there were some pretty lame entries in the contest, should I take it personally? 🙂
Yeah, what’s up with that? Is TTAG going to publish the rest of them? They did specifically request gun review articles for publication. I feel like this exercise was a huge waste of time.
I would’ve liked to have read that. I’ve been carrying the vz-82 for the last six years and I’d be interested in someone else’s opinion.
I guess I’ll save it and resubmit the next time they have a contest. Short version, though, is that it’s a pretty great little gun, if a little bit on the ugly and heavy side.
Take it from a GLOCK owner, CZs are anything but ugly. And small guns are better off being heavy.

There’s been a Steyr in the “used” rack at my Cabela’s for some time, perhaps I should ask to hold it.
I have an M40A1 and an L9A1, both from the Cabelas used cabinet. Both are near-as-makes-no-difference to brand new. The L9 had a bonus of nice, bright Trijicon night sights installed as well. $390+ tax.
I’m so glad I wasted my time writing a Super Redhawk review that apparently got lost in the mail after assurances from Dan that he had it. I probably would not have won but it would have been nice to at least see it published.

What is the fetish with propping a gun up with something in the trigger guard?
If someone was pictured with a finger in there everyone would go ape shit.
It’s not like your camera can’t photograph a pistol lying flat on the table.
For someone new to firearms ownership, the commonality of some practices make me wonder if anyone can think for themselves and stop copy catting stupid things.
That is a pet peeve of mine.
Especially when a rifle cartridge or a shotgun shell is used to prop up a handgun, just because it doesn’t match…
I got a pack of pistol stands on Amazon for about ten bucks. Threw it on top of an order. Problem solved.

All the reviews have been great. I would love to see all the user reviews in a separate section. I trust the reviews by the TTAG team and the people who post here more than most other sources,
The writing was great, the stars at the end were way off.
I hope u get one of the better legion guns. They have alot of problems with the finish on the gun wearing off or missing in spots.
And to the idiot that doesnt like propping up guns. Its to take better picture. You know angles and things…
It doesn’t take a better picture. That’s the thing. You can achieve the same angle by…I don’t know…moving your fucking camera!
Actually Michael, I’m with you on this. I normally use a 9mm or .45 hollowpoint (think “ashtray”) behind the trigger guard to prop a gun up but the Steyr was NOT cooperating on the stainless. It occurred to me after the fact that a 25c rubber superball would have done just the trick.
It was late. I had been taking pics for hours. Harry wanted his piece back three days ago. It was this lazy man’s way out. But it was a lazy way out.
Well, Dick….. I’ll just leave it at that.

Thanks everyone. Frankly, I assumed I didn’t have a chance. There were some fantastic handgun reviews in the competition and I could clearly tell that folks were writing about pistols they knew and loved. I wasn’t bored by one of them, several just left me wishing I could be sitting across the kitchen table so I could hear more.
The rifle reviews were super intimidating. I’m not a rifle guy to begin with, and man, was I blown away by the investment long-gun folks make in their pieces. The attention to detail, the photography, and your stories of tuning and customization and hunting and… wow. Cool stuff. Makes me wish I had one.
All in all, I just wanted an outlet to talk about guns. I hope the reviews help someone, somewhere, to get an interest in the hobby, make that purchase, or find something better for them. The online comments were fair, helpful and encouraging and I look forward to shooting some more material your way.

Much congratulations on your win! I sure wish I had tried a bit harder to get out to the range and do a side-by-side old-versus-the new comparison of my Smith .40’s, but I was short on ammo and a dollar or three as well as otherwise occupied by family issues. By the time I was able to break free there was only one day left before the deadline. Hopeless. Oh well, always the next contest. I just handled a 229 Legion in .40 at the LGS and it’s a sweet gun for sure! Enjoy!!!
