Clearly, the coming Biden regime intends on launching its own little jihad on American gun owners’ rights.  Even without Congressional lawmaking, slow Joe can do plenty through executive action to make gun ownership expensive and difficult. Worst case, his handlers might even have enough horsepower to push something far more noxious through Congress, depending how the Georgia runoffs go next month.

The People of the Gun don’t have to wait to take our own action. There are things we can do now to help protect ourselves and our fellow gun owners.

Here are some things you can do to help make life difficult for those seeking to strip you of your firearm freedoms. You don’t have to do all of these.  Instead, pick and choose which work best for your and your situation.

Buy a firearm prior to January 20, 2021

Half the battle is psychological. Show the anti-Constitution crowd you aren’t going anywhere.

Along those lines, and perhaps more importantly, if you have friends who are not firearm owners, gently help and encourage them to buy their first gun. All the cool kids are doing it. It is amazing how much more a person will support the Second Amendment when they have skin in the game. Obviously, when prudent, buy American. Spending cash, too, instead of leaving an electronic credit card trail.

Bigstock.

If you are considering purchasing a semi-automatic rifle or magazines for your rifles or handguns, buy them before inauguration day.

The fastest way to impact firearms ownership is through Presidential executive orders, but the more outlandish those orders are, the more likely they are to be ignored, successfully challenged, and blocked, in court.

The continuum between legal gun ownership and confiscation is wide. First, governments like to ban sales. Then they ban possession and ownership. Finally comes confiscation.

Simply banning sales is easiest to implement and least likely to be blocked by the courts, so get your copy of America’s favorite rifle now, along with plenty of extra magazines for your guns. Magazines that accommodate more 10 rounds…the ones most likely to be banned.

How many mags do you need? That’s an intensely personal question. For those new to shooting, I recommend at least three magazines for each semi-auto rifle and pistol. Ideally each of these gun owners will have three brand new spares too as magazines eventually wear out over time.

Stop telling strangers and social media “friends” about your gun-related gear.

Stop posting, texting or emailing information about what you own. And whatever you do, don’t post a photo on Facebook of your latest acquisition. No need to make it easy for would-be tyrants or burglars to compile a list before they come visit you.

As a side point: don’t post social media photos showing you and your family while you’re four states away on vacation. Don’t give the local criminal community an opportunity to come take your stuff while you’re gone.

Instead of posting it on Facebook, if you’re eager to share the excitement of a new purchase, take a new shooter to the range and give them a chance to shoot your new piece after giving them something mild with which to fire their first shots.

Write your Congressman and Senators.

Yes, you get a pass if you’re unfortunate enough to have Chuck U. Schumer as your Senator or Nancy “Just Eat Ice Cream” Pelosi as your Representative. Writing to them would be a waste of time. Instead, submit your public comment on the new proposed rules for pistol support braces.

If you have a squish representing you who could vote either way, encourage them to support gun rights for law-abiding Americans in a very short, written letter. If they already support gun rights, pat them on the back and thank them for their support. Do it with a real letter on paper, not an email.

Recruit at least one new person to join a national or regional gun rights organization.

Love them or hate them, the NRA still remains the big dog on the block when it comes to “the gun lobby.”  In fact, the NRA carries a lot of weight not only in Washington, but in state capitals as well because NRA members vote.  Unfortunately, alternative groups like the FPC, GOA and SAF not only lack the same name recognition and respect in Washington, but most have even less pull in state legislatures.

Target (pun intended) a young person, so we as gun owners do not age out and go the way of the dinosaur. Not only that, but ask the young people in your life what it would take for them to recruit their peers to join these gun rights groups as well.

Do not avoid jury duty.

You just may be the deciding vote for acquittal in a self-defense trial of a gun-owner. Or when a police officer is wrongly charged with stopping a violent criminal bent on mayhem.

Jury nullification is a powerful thing and it can be real. But it takes having good people on juries. People like you.

Always vote.

No matter how crooked the system may seem, or how trivial the election, always vote. If you haven’t already, consider making a candidate’s stance on the Second Amendment the primary litmus test for your vote for or against them.

Work cooperatively with trusted friends to secure needed ammunition.

I suspect our current ammo drought will last for at least the next couple of years. Compare what you have on hand to what you think you need, by caliber, with trusted gun friends. Help one another fill your respective gaps. Also, if you see ammo in stores that you know a friend needs, give them a call and pick some up for them. They’ll do the same for you, too.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

There will be a logical progression (which we see as a regression!) concerning ownership of firearms. If it comes to that, semi-autos will be restricted or banned first. Single shot firearms will be last.

If all you have are semi-autos, your last stand could come early. You’ll want to consider acquiring a lever-action rifle and a revolver. A revolver that has two cylinders – such one that comes with both a .357/38 and 9mm cylinders or .45 Colt and .45 ACP – will be worth its weight in gold when ammunition is scarce.

Also, a lever-action rifle in the same caliber as one of your revolvers (for example, .357 Magnum) is a good idea. That allows for maximum flexibility and minimizes the need for odd calibers of ammunition.

Liberty gun safe
Dan Z. for TTAG

Buy a gun safe.

It not only is a safety issue concerning children and grandchildren, but a good gun safe is also a hedge against the casual burglar or thief. Gun safes also provide some fire protection.

If firearms become more scarce, more thefts of guns will probably occur. Thieves love to target easier marks, so make yourself a harder target than the average gun owner. Keep your doors and windows locked, your home well-illuminated, and practice home carry.

Home carry may be as simple as not taking off your concealed carry gun just because you walked in your front door. Alarms, dogs, and nosy neighbors can help, too. Also, cameras for their deterrence value.

Any safe beats no safe. A decent residential security container, mounted in a good location, will make stealing your stuff a lengthy, noisy and difficult affair. You want to make stealing your most valuable possessions (including, in this case, firearms) as difficult as possible, taking more time, tools and/or effort than the casual bad guy is willing to invest.

HINT: Having more than one safe is a big plus. Tackling one big safe is difficult. Tackling two or more? Few thieves are willing to tackle that.

Make sure you’re protected legally.

First, make sure you have a self-defense insurance policy. Lawyers are expensive and unless you have a pile of cash earmarked to fight a criminal prosecution for a righteous self-defense incident, you need this coverage.

Furthermore, get legal advice before you do anything. Now is the time to identify a good lawyer and get their contact info in your phone (and the phone of your significant other in case your phone is impounded for evidence). Love them or hate them, lawyers will almost all tell you never to talk to law authorities if you are under suspicion without an attorney present.

Today we are in a whole new world. What should you say or do if a police officer asks you who in your neighborhood owns a firearm? Or comes to your house asking if you do?

Ask a lawyer before you are in that situation. One of the biggest potential pitfalls is a perjury trap, where you tell police one time about an incident and then later present your recollection of the facts slightly differently and you get charged with obstruction of justice.

Conclusion

An avalanche is made up of lots of little snowflakes. America’s gun owners are not the sort of snowflakes we think of when we use that word today, but you get the idea. America’s gun culture is made up of scores of millions of gun owners. Yes, some gun owners embrace the gun culture and gun rights a lot more aggressively and robustly than others.

I get it, advocacy work is work. But it must be done. Working together to protect and defend our gun rights remains the only way we’ll keep them.

So go out and implement some (or all) of these steps towards protecting and defending your right to keep and bear arms. Your kids and grand kids should thank you. And they very well may some day.

As we know, freedom is not a spectator sport.

  1. The most meaningful steps anyone can take are (i) learning to use their guns and (ii) developing a fighting mindset. Everything else is theater.

    • Respectfully disagree. Sure, ultimately, a fighting mindset is the last resort . . . but it SHOULD be the LAST resort. If we style ourselves as adhering to the Constitution, then we should go through the processes established by the Constitution.

And those outlined in the article are pretty much exactly those. I would add:

      1. All politics is local. Having gotten their @$$es handed to them locally, the Leftists have started to focus on that. GO to your local city council/county supervisor meetings. Find out who the candidates are, and vote accordingly (for local elections, many places either do not require, or prohibit, partisan identification). Watch their meeting agendas carefully (and learn the jargon).

      2. DO NOT underestimate the power of writing your representatives. I have some knowledge of how “constituent input” is evaluated in offices of legislators, and basically, phone calls are waited least, then comes email, then actual letters, then in-person. I can’t say how any individual politician weights those categories, but that ranking holds for almost all.

      3. I get the whole “If it’s time to bury them, it’s time to use them” vibe, but the reality is that . . . we need time. We need time to get patriots coordinating with each other. We need time to evaluate the tactics they use to try to outlaw/seize our guns. Following Constitutional processes (EVEN in opposition to unConstitutional laws or Executive Orders) gives us that time, and allows us to scope out the opposition.

Sure, you can hang in your basement and keep chanting “from my cold, dead hands” . . . and you will die honorably, and I hope you take a decent honor guard to Valhalla. I bet you have neighbors with guns, too. Do you know them? What do they plan to do? Wouldn’t it make more sense for at least four or five of you in a neighborhood to work together?

Being all Patrick Henry is great, but . . . Pat helped organize militias. Be a SMART patriot. We’ll need them.

        • OK, we’ve come to that point. Are you shooting (or preferably, tarring and feathering and riding out of D.C. on a rail) politicians??? No??

Hmm. Guess “it’s that time” doesn’t mean much, does it?

If there ARE procedural and Constitutional POTENTIAL remedies, however feeble we may think them, we should pursue them. No one should pull the trigger on a civil war without exhausting all alternatives. Remember our last go around? Official count is 620,000 dead. Most historians agree that was significantly understated . . . and it doesn’t count civilian deaths (of which there were many). From a population of less than 32 million (less than 10% of what we currently have). Given that we are talking about repeating that horror, let’s be real – we’re talking over 6,000,000 dead.

If it must be, it must be, but perhaps we should make SURE there is no alternative, hmm?

        • I’m not shooting at anybody. Individuals will get nowhere with that approach by themselves. There are very few, if any, solid other options left. Before it’s over factions will have formed and they will proceed as was done the last time. That’s the way I see things moving if something significant doesn’t change things real fast.

      • I apologize but I’m not getting you. Are you suggesting that ‘Patriots’ should work within the system? G-d knows I wish that were still possible, it’s not. We are on that path and I doubt anything can stop it now.

…”We need time to evaluate the tactics they use to try to outlaw/seize our guns….”

This is already known, and when ‘Patriots'(your term) refuse to comply the other side will amp things up. It will get very ugly, faster than anyone thought possible.

        I hope I’m proven wrong.

      • All of the above. Both/And. A fighting mindset should include the willingness and ability to fight in different ways.

This war has many fronts. All of them need fighters, and the more effective we are at organizing, PR, and lobbying, the less likely we are to lose lives. (Meaning *our* lives; I don’t care what happens to the Marxists and assorted authoritarians, as long as they lose.)

      • In this City, says it’s a city on the post office, I dont think I know anyone who doesn’t own a gunm. Every woman I’ve talked too has at least one. One thing I’ve found in my short life is it’s hard to take somthing away from a woman. And as you guys that have worked law enforcement and prisons know, the meanest cat in the cage is female. Hopefully more gals will start tooling up.

        • The key phase is “at least one”. I’m a firm believer in “two is one and one is none”. Preferably at least one without a paper trail. I am always leery of posting on things such as this as it leaves a trail – I am not exactly a “gray man”.

I do not think we have reached the point of taking up arms against our government, it could come. My oath to defend the Constitution still stands and if or when I decide the only way to do that is with violence my obligation is clear. I pray that time will never come. I’ve seen combat and I do NOT wish to see it in the U.S. It has been 160 years since the start of the “War of the Northern Aggression” (I’m from Texas, what did you think I’d call it?) and out government schools have done such a p*ss poor job of teaching history that too many people (especially communist clowns) have no idea of what awaits. Hell exists; I’ve seen it.

    • Rumor has it Twitter which I have never used because the girly men there could not handle me talking about firearms instead of talking about cookie receipies are going to block/censure all anti biden commits on the day that fraudulent ratbassturd democRat is sworn in.

Furthermore…POTUS DJT sees the Pelosi/Turtle $600.00 bet and raises it to $2000.00. Figure the sales tax you’ll pay bit by bit on goods and services and subtract $200.00 plus from a $2000.00 windfall. For $600.00 it’s minus 60 to 70 dollars which leaves peanuts and does not help much at all. Like it or not if you are going to allocate money do not be a Scrooge and squeeze the weenie out of the hotdog.

      • How much did the U.S.A. just give to Iseral , and a few other countries, it’s all fake money anyway, so spread er thick, but butter my slice first. ,,,,,,,, Money keeps us slaves. And if you think about it poverty supply’s the armed forces with cannon fodder.Had we had the wars going on now compared to the 60’s America would have an active draft. So many young men and women can’t find work now so they join a service.

  2. Always vote??? Seriously! After the 2020 election? Only Marxist will win. This country is bought and sold….. by both parties.

    The game is rigged.

    • “The game is rigged.”

Yeah, that’ll teach ’em. Just give the election to the enemy. (sarc)

All the more reason to show up and vote, jerkoff…

      • Nothing will be won in the voting booth. Give it to the enemy??? Pay attention they already stole the election. Georgia is already predetermined. At this point if you thing we have fair elections you’re a Special Kind of Stupid. 2020 wasn’t clear enough for you?

Nothing will be won in the Supreme Court. Clearly comprised by the Chief Justice who rode the Lolita Express.

The only win at this point will come from talking up arms.

        Jerk off? Go Pound Sand!

    • As a card carrying member, I would like to thank DJ for his non-vote, and enuf for his excellent choice (Harris) vote to help fundamentally change this country. We know better.

      Geoff no thanks for you!

        • Miner thinks???? Who knew?? We’ve all been waiting for evidence, so I’m assuming you have some. What would that evidence be??? The same evidence that convinced Minor Annoyance that Slow Joe Biden and Kamel-toe the Ho are somehow a superior choice to a President that has actually accomplished something??? Whatever, we’d be interested in your “evidence” for any of these propositions.

      • I voted for Trump. It’s with the 2020 election it become clear to me voting means NOTHING!

It’s clear the Marxists have control of the election process and the courts. Just as they do public education and academia. Antonio Gramsci and the slow march through the culture.

Marxist have made Civil War inevitable.

595 million guns and billions of rounds of ammo with anger brewing in America you know many of the triggers are going to get pulled.

    • Your presidential vote just shows You believe the lie. For shits and grins I’d like to see the next election with zero turnouts. Be interesting to see what happens, ,,,Uhh ooh the people have given up, moral is bad, not good to have bad moral. Next comes mutiny, we better fix this.,,, ,I voted for Trump this time, first time in 4 elections. And the results were as expected. ,,,,One State one vote, the electoral college is a ruse.

  3. Those are good sentiments, John, and I’d like to think staying engaged in the political process will have the possibilities that we’ve historically enjoyed. But, I’m having a lot of trouble getting past what actually appears to be coming. The agenda of the Democrats is hard-left and will demand an authoritarianism we’ve never experienced in this country.

  4. “Stop posting, texting or emailing information about what you own.”

I have never taken part in social media, and never will. I don’t understand the need for 1000’s of “friends.”

I looked up an ex-coworker a while back. She had a XXL huge ego, and in a video stated her (whatever) had “10,000 friends.” You don’t and can’t have that many friends. [scan page, click, i’m your friend, next click]

How many of your *actual* friends do you expect to be in a trench next to you, or even to come over and help you get those fallen tree limbs off your roof? Take out your garbage while you,re sick? (insert effort related item here)

Also years ago, before I got bored with it, an thing specific gun forum I read had members that listed their inventory as a .sig file on every post. How brain dead is that?

And extremely good and trusted friend of mine has more guns than god. I have seen what he brings to the range, fired most / all of them. I don’t know nor do I ask what he’s got or where it is. No reason to. “If you have an [item x], could you bring it to the range next time?” “Sure.”

He is probably the one person I would share all with…but we don’t. OpSec. Even your BFF could be turned with the proper amount of threats.

It is a sad state to live in, but there we are. It’s likely to get worse before it gets better.

    Merry Christmas

I have never taken part in social media, and never will. I don’t understand the need for 1000’s of “friends.”

Indeed you are very VERY lost. What the hell do you think TTAG is? If this isn’t social media , nothing is.

      • You seem to be the one who doesn’t understand social media. There’s no following, upvoting, friend, or liking here. You’re as connected to Miner 49 as Dyspeptic Gunsmith. That’s like claiming dead tree newspapers are social media because they have a “letter to the editor” section.

        • Nope, the feds track this sight and your ISP’s. But what’s happening when we can’t talk of what we do, own , or enjoy. A person should be able to post they have this or that without fear of retaliation. Should be able too, not advised

  5. What we all need to remember is that the Second Amendment (2A) is here to stay. All of this speculation on what ‘ol Sleepy Joe is going to do to curtail American’s 2A rights is just scare tactics. Abolishing 2A can NOT be done by executive order or even by “colorable” legislation. We are a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy, as most would have believe, and the U.S. Constitution is the Supreme Law! Amending the Constitution is the only lawful way the leftard gun-grabbers can accomplish stripping us of our secured 2A rights. To amend the Constitution, 75% of the states would have to ratify any changes made to it – and that just ain’t gonna happen. Fact: almost every anti-gun law existing is unconstitutional. The mandate of A2 to government(s), both federal and states’, is that you SHALL (an ORDER) keep your damn hands off of this PEOPLE’S vested right, but the gun-grabbers just don’t seem to understand that ORDER and everything they do to curtail OUR 2A rights is actually a federal felony (re: Title 18, USC, Section 242). We’ve gotta start callin’ ’em on it and throwin’ ’em all in Leavenworth for their encroachments upon OUR rights! The only problem there it that some of us will have to get busted to have the opportunity to press charges against them, and of course, these case(s) will need to be of the the appellate type where the judges, that actually know the law, apply the Constitution’s mandates (excluding the 9th circuit). But now that we have a 2A friendly majority in the SCOTUS, I think for the first time in recent history, we might start seeing some of the usurpers going to prison. Some’ll say that this’s a pipe-dream, but we’ve got the Constitution and the United States Code on our side, if a constitutionalist like me gets wrongfully busted.

    • I’m certainly with you in spirit, but your optimism is unjustified.

We were certainly founded as a Constitutional Republic, until “nice” idiots actually went through all those steps you described to pervert it into a dumbocracy, guaranteeing a near-permanent majority for the anti-rights/responsibilities party, with or without fraud.

The United States Code is the list of Federal laws including NFA, GCA, etc. – not on our side at all.

As many others have commented, “the process IS the punishment”. It would be great if the Constitution had teeth, but it doesn’t. The Court has overturned a few unconstitutional laws, but that has NEVER resulted in consequences for the originators or enforcers of even the most egregious infringements, nor in those unjustly arrested EVER getting their lives back.

      • I’m not here to argue, but either the Constitution means what it says or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, they’re perpetrating a fraud on the whole of the republic’s citizenry and something needs to be done. The courts are the first step and now that we finally, for the first time in the past few decades, have a conservative majority high court, a texturalist majority, we should start there. The alternative is ugly and a last resort – insurrection. I’m gettin’ too damn old and tired for that. As for the USC, 18, Sec. 241-2, were enacted to hold everyone including govt. actors accountable. I’m just sayin’ that one way or another, it’s up to us to hold them accountable, and we have the tools to do so, either peacefully or not. One way or another it’ll have to be done.

        • Sounds great, but I’m not sure what peaceful means you’re recommending – unless you mean fighting prosecution up through SCOTUS (and having your life destroyed whether you “win” or not).

        • “either the Constitution means what it says or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, they’re perpetrating a fraud”

          I’m thinking yeah, they’re perpetrating a fraud.

  6. Judging by the results, I think the deep state did what they did to get Trump out. Think republicans did good in other races nationwide. Voting will still work for the most part going forward, especially now that it looks like Dominion is going bye bye nationwide.

    • The corrupted couldn’t handle another 4 years of the only fully competent POTUS in recent memory so they compromised a whole national system to be rid of him. I doubt voting in the USA will ever be right if they get away with it. Sad.

  7. Always check candidates gun position, don’t vote for any gun reformers!

  8. Well said, well thought out. By he way, regarding ANY MATTER of concern, have you been in touch with your elected representatives pursuant to your concerns. If you haven’t,WHY?

    • Why haven’t I spent time on my “representatives” for the last few years?

      Why? really?? Are you kidding???

Because my “representatives” are corrupt, bought and paid for traitors for china selling my children for their own profit.

Firing squads are WAY TO GOOD for them.

      HEADS ON PIKES!!!!!!

  9. If biteme is inaugurated I will never vote again……..and neither should you unless it’s under rule 308.

Spare us the buy in or the ratifying of the enemy.

This election was either the one to kill the swamp or it was the one that ends America.

Pray for Trump and the republic.

    Heads on pikes!!!!!!!

    MAGA

  10. As far as voting goes Iowa has done pretty well. Turned long held democrat seats to Republican and gave President Trump the largest Republican win in state history. We’ve passed more Pro 2A legislation than most states and have Republican control of both the State legislature and Senate as well Governor. The problem as I see it is and will be in D.C. as is generally the case. Which may well require more than the Ballot Box can provide. If that turns out to be the case, that in itself brings about a whole new set of problems. First among them is the Courage to act. The idea that there must be a consensus among POTG in order to act. Less than 400 Patriots confronted the British at Concord. Less than 10% of the population fought against the Tyranny of the British Crown. Would it require sacrifice? Yes and would take great Courage. Which is nothing more or less than was given 245 years ago that “We the People” could live in the Freest Nation that Humanity has ever witnessed. That is the Crux of the problem. Not so much what is being done in Washington to destroy the Bill of Rights, but what are Citizens willing to do to prevent it?

  11. If, you live in Illinois and write your Commy/Socialist Representative and Senators about any pro-2nd Amendment and firearm related issue it falls on deaf ears. Our Representatives and Senators in Illinois do not care what we have to say and ignore us pro-2nd Amendment folks. We just do not have a voice in Illinois in this matter at all at the federal level and mostly the state level also. Our hopes of having President Trump for a second term are about gone and our hopes to turn the federal courts has been lost. We can thank the Libertarian Party voters for this in all the battleground states that Trump lost in for pissing our 2nd Amendment rights away. I hope the Libertarian Party voters that voted against Trump do not need or every want any firearms in the future.

  12. If you want the most meaningful thing you can do it’s this:

Show the fuck up IN PERSON. Stop relying on writing letters and making phone calls. SHOW UP.

And no, not just to some rally at some capitol or other location. At the houses of Legislators, Governors, Mayors and Congresscritters. Also, attend goddamn school board meetings.

The Left gets what they want by showing up. They put “boots on the ground”. A Congressperson takes 200 people outside his/her house far more seriously than they take 5000 letters and emails they never bothered to read.

  13. As a member of a congressional staff I would like to disagree with one point.
While writing a letter on paper is not a bad idea it just will not reach the staff in time on time sensitive issues. On those I suggest calling. The local district office is often easier to reach. Give them the issue, your position and ASK for a written response. The person that answers the phone may or may not have a clue what you are talking about. They may be an intern but if you can give them the issue, the bill number or name, your position and ask for a response it will be entered. That’s assuming you live in the district. Oh and you have to give the your name and contact info if you expect them to take your call seriously.

Please be polite, doesn’t hurt and can help. I hang up on the second f bomb.

  14. Your vote means nothing, massive voter fraud and SCOTUS does nothing, this is now a countdown to revolution. The gasoline is being spilled as we speak, just needs a match.

    • We all ready had the Revolution it’s time to take up arms.

Gasoline? It’s spilled everywhere. Just waiting for the source ignition.

      Anger is brewing.

      • Getting better, down to a lot of pink skin now, finally almost got all the crusty peeled off, itchys like hell, not scarred up as bad as first thought they would be. Thank for asking

  15. Personally, I appreciate TTAG and their efforts to publicize each battle of the ensuing war. The routine of our daily lives tend to create political inertia. It’s way too easy to sit back and just let someone else take action. Keep after us to write and fight.

  16. The 2nd amendment is our right. Rights are not given to us, taxed or granted by the government. Article 18 U.S. Code section 242. Deprivation of rights under color of law is the law that specifies that anyone in the government that passes a law restricting your right to bear arms can be fined, imprisoned or in extreme cases even sentenced to death. Any attempt to pass an executive order or law restricting our rights should be met with arrests. [This law could also be used on other rights violations such as closures of restaurants and small businesses.]
Another thought is to join your State Militia which I believe is under the control of your Governor. The 2nd amendment mentions the Militia in its right to bear arms in case the gun grabbers try to claim individuals don’t have rights.

    • No need to join a militia. The Heller v. D.C. decision confirmed that Second Amendment ensures a “fundamental” and “individual” right to “keep and bear Arms”. (As if we didn’t know that already!)
