The breakopen over-under derringer style “tactical pocket pistol” announced by Heizer Defense will apparently be made in a variety of flavors, potentially increasing its appeal to, well, someone. Not only will shooters be able to get the DoubleTap chambered in ulna-shattering .45 ACP, but for those interested in more accurate second shots (you know…double taps), you’ll also be able to get the skinny pistol in 9mm. Plus, the gun will be sold in a more (apparently) budget-minded aluminum construction in addition to the originally announced 14 oz. titanium version. MSRP is still TBD which may be SOP at this point. Or not. You’ll know more when we do. More specs at the Heizer site. Sunglasses recommended. More from the press release after the jump.

The DoubleTap™ is a tactical pocket pistol, loaded with 5 patents pending, built on a titanium or aluminum frame; the slimmest and lightest on the market today at only .665 inches wide and 14 ounces. Available in a show-stopping .45 ACP or the more popular 9MM, this no-snag, hammerless designed pistol is completely designed, engineered and manufactured to the highest degree of precision and tolerances in an aerospace facility using aerospace technology and equipment. The DoubleTap™ carries two rounds in the chamber and the integral grips house two additional spare rounds. The break-action features a patent-pending progressive barrel porting option that cuts muzzle rise and recoil.  The ambidextrous thumb latch releases the action and automatically ejects the spent rounds.

Unlike any firearm, the DoubleTapâ„¢ features a truly revolutionary double-action trigger system that utilizes ball bearings for a smooth action and crisp trigger pull. The DoubleTapâ„¢ is available in a titanium or aluminum frame and is finished with a MIL-STD finish, the same used on military aircraft, for corrosion and wear resistant finish. Production guns will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

  1. Uh oh. There’s a nice little niche market for an ultra-exclusive (read: expensive) titanium derringer in .45, by a company that offers Wilson Combat caliber personal service.

By offering a less expensive alternative, Heizer just shot themselves in the foot.

  2. Really?

What is this supposed to do that another subcompact [Kahr 380, P3AT, LCP, Bodyguard 380, DB 380, ect.] won’t do better?

Cost more? Cripple your firing hand? Run out of ammo sooner? Nevermind, I figured it out.

  3. this is not a bad concept for a deep concealment gun, at least in 45. 230 gr at 700fps is an attention getter. clearly your life would have to be threatened before you would use it.

  4. To use that godawful phrase that’s making the rounds: why are people hating on this? It looks like an innovative and useful handgun. If it actually works and they can maintain sanity on price then they’ll have a winner. I know I want one.

  5. Aside from the fact that my already permanently injured wrists would rebel against me after my rehabilitation from firing this device…I find that if it is as light, small and maintenance free as they make it out to be (titanium doesn’t need oil to not corrode) then it would be excellent as a last ditch weapon. The extra rounds in the grip sell it as something unique and tacticool if not quite tactically required versus the weight increase but oh well. Fact is reloading a derringer sounds like the worst of worst scenarios anyway but that’s why we bought it, right? Assuming both hands still are functioning after firing it, that is…

  6. I have an American Derringer in 45 acp that weighs 15oz, not that bad to shoot. Certainly well within the realm of what a competant pistol shooter can handle. Kind of like a high end Liberator.
