That’s right…the second president of these United States expressed the opinion that one of the ways Americans should commemorate the birth of this nation is with guns. Why? Because without them, America simply wouldn’t exist.

Firearms are an intrinsic part of this country’s history, culture and character. Enshrining the individual right to keep and bear arms was a stroke of genius by the Founding Fathers and a civil right that keeps us free to this day.

That’s a fact that our friends in the Civilian Disarmament Industrial Complex and most of the media choose not to acknowledge or will simply deny, all evidence to the contrary. In fact the details of the flag at the top of this post will probably triggerย a fair number of them who monitor these pages, which makes it all the more fun and appropriate.

So while you’re spending time with your friends and familial unit today — swimming, grilling, igniting small incendiary devices…whatever — give a thought to all the freedoms we still enjoy and the role that firearms play in ensuring that we still have them. With all of our problems and all of our faults, America is still the best, most indispensable nation. There are many reasons we still have to put up walls to keep people out rather than to make sure they stay in. Have yourself a happy Independence Day.

      I certainly did last night and will continue today with my tiny “cannon” (a.k.a. noise maker).

      For the curious:

      My “cannon” is a piece of round steel rod stock, 2-inches in diameter and about 8-inches long with a 0.5-inch diameter bore. I also drilled a 0.125-inch (1/8 inch) hole at the breach for commonly available fuses.

      Operation is super simple–insert a fuse, pour about 30 grains of black powder (or black powder substitute) into the hole, smash down a piece (about 4-inches x 5-inches) of copy/printer paper into the bore, light the fuse, and then step away and enjoy the modest pop. Note that you have to really smash that paper into the bore to get a good seal and report (bang). Use a “ramrod” to smash the paper down. (I use a 3/8-inch diameter steel rod to do that.)

  3. On this day in 1776, 52 men, and later 4 more, signed a document expressing their freedom from tyranny.
    Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the revolutionary army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the revolutionary war.

    Never forget that there is a cost for freedom.

  4. I have spent months in Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong. I traveled behind the Iron Curtain before it came down. I’ve toured Europe. What did I learn? The USA is the pinnacle of freedom and innovation…well, before our own government gone woke and New World Order. We will take it back. Not sure how, and I am not sure how much pain it will take, but we will prevail.

    Prayers and honor for all of those who helped build this country. We are not perfect, but we know it and will continuously improve.

  6. I was going to do the most patriotic thing I could think of today. Buy a Smith & Wesson revolver. An old one. Dacian will love the next part. Private sale, no paperwork, background check or waiting period. Transaction to be conducted in the parking lot of a closed restaurant. Mark just gave me a PX. He was about to leave when his wife asked what he was doing. He explained. She said, “Don’t sell that. I like it.” Where was she when I was looking for a bride?   9. For the first time I opened carried a long gun yesterday. A Henry AR-7. While walking my dog. A man asked me why I was carrying a rifle stock???
    I told him I’ve always had one with me, when I go out with the dog.

  10. Just shut everything down for the evening. It’s been a good day. A GOOD DAY. Kids had the choice of hot dogs, burgers, or smoked sausage. Adults had the choice of T-bone, Blackened Tuna, and anyone who wanted could get into the pulled pork. Hushpuppies, baked sweet potatoes, fried okra, apple pie, my apple sauce cake, blackberry cobbler, or peanutbutter pie.
    Fired off 13 shots with the 12 pounder. First shot missed the plywood half sheet by about a foot. After that we found the range and punched holes in the target at 500 yards. Even with the ear plugs, my ears are still ringing a little. The boys put on quite the fireworks show. And no fires were started.
    After the guns were silent and stored, we broke out some home made honey mead, and some of my Porter. After the kids fell out I pulled out a bottle of good American Made Bourbon. After a toast to the Founders and another to those who fought for and have defended our independence and freedoms, things quieted down and there are happily overfed, slightly inebriated adults, or just tuckered out kids sprawled out in both houses and the cabin bunkhouse.
    I sincerely hope everyone who comes on the TTAG board had a wonderful and safe Independence Day. And hope none of us is ever forced to give up any of the freedoms and liberties so many have sacrificed so much to give us. Happy Birthday America. My God bless and protect us all.
