While the de rigueur ‘Keep Austin Weird’ signs can be seen at just about every dive bar, coffee house and organic food co-op here in the capital, this place is really no different than any other larger college town. It’s only in comparison to the rest of the Lone Star State that Austin’s freak flag stands out so prominently. Towns like Madison, Ann Arbor and Boulder, to name a few, give ATX more than a run for its countercultural money. Still, as we’ve detailed, the epicenter of lefty thought here, the University of Texas, has its fair trade, ethically sourced, non-sweat shop-produced panties in a real twist over the prospect of students carrying concealed in class next year. But while the pitchfork bearers and dildo toters get all the press, not everyone is down with all the outrage . . .
Though his colleagues in the Liberal Arts department seem to be uniformly a-feared of the prospect of a strapped student body, at least one business school prof takes a much more reasoned view of the actual risks faced on today’s campus. Senior lecturer John Doggett doesn’t want to be lumped in with the lumpen professoriate and sent this reply to Professor Jorge Canizares-Esguerra’s call to action:

It takes some guts to buck the prevailing hard left tilt in an academic environment, especially if you don’t have the benefit of tenure protecting your job. But Mr. Doggett is no novice when it comes to controversy and for standing up and being counted, he’s our gun hero of the day.
I sure hope that Dogget has tenure. University faculty and administration have long memories and even longer knives.
BTW, back in the day when I held a grudge, I had a problem with the administration of a school that I will not mention. A couple of years later when the same school hit me up for a contribution, I told them why it wasn’t going to get one. I may also have suggested an anatomically impossible act, but after all these years I can’t recall.
He doesn’t have tenure. He’s not even a professor. He’s a senior lecturer, though he’s also very involved in UT’s M.B.A. program. I didn’t earn mine there, but I did have occasion to sit in on an entrepreneurism class of his one day. Pretty smart guy.
With a J.D. from Yale and an M.B.A. from Harvard, not to mention a global reputation as a strategy advisor to multinational corporations, I have a feeling Dogget wouldn’t miss any meals were UT to shun him.
Good for him. I hope he continues to have a long and productive career wherever he chooses to ply his trade.
Hopefully he stays in the teaching field. Young people (like myself) are going to need people like him if they are to be anything but left wing bleeding heart morons.

apparently, the “lecturer” has his legal street cred, to whit I quote from his testimony on Justice Thomas’ nomination: “When I graduated from Claremont Men’s College,I went to Yale Law School, and in my third year at Yale LawSchool, Clarence Thomas came as a first year student.”

Who the hell is actually going to carry? Veterans and masters degree students who are going to school after work.

Yeah same. In college and carry. Its simple calculus really. I could have spent that 600 on better food but if I’m dead I can’t really enjoy that food can I? I hold no delusions that most people don’t think that way on campus but that is what I chose to do with my money and if the cost of entry is too much for people to stomach than this shouldnt be a problem in the first place.
I didn’t actually carry on campus (different times, different culture) but did have a few guns in my apartment for hunting, etc. As a geology student, we went on frequent field trips into snake-infested backcountry, so I did pack my Colt Trooper then with full knowledge and indulgence of the professors.
Once, when I was heading out for several weeks for our summer field camp, my roommate and I sublet our apartment. I didn’t want to leave my handgun at the apartment, and they weren’t allowed at field camp, so my professor just offered to lock it in his office for me. An action not likely to be repeated these days, I’m sure.
Man, times have changed. When I was in college, if I had $600 I would have wrapped it in flimsy white paper and burned it a little at a time.

As an aside, I find it hard to believe that the gov or any universities really want to encourage STEM graduates. Seems to me that boosting the ranks of critical and rational thinkers would adversely affect the endgame. If anything I’d expect PSA’s encouraging students to learn mime or sand sculpting.

I have a hunch that Professor Doggett’s tenure is going to be revoked shortly. Tenure is a protection for professors who profess Progressive doctrine and doesn’t apply to other doctrinal positions.
If he’s a “senior lecturer”, I kind of doubt he has tenure. but I understand when you do have it, it’s pretty ironclad.
It can be but it varies widely from school to school.
Business school lecturer vs liberal arts professor
There’s the difference. One understands the real world and the other lives in a fantasy land where a liberal arts degree is worth more then the paper it’s printed on.
I think that you meant that is ‘wasn’t worth the paper’ it is printed on.
Liberal Arts degrees have less value than another type of paper that’s available in 2-ply on a 1000 sheet roll.
The degree is worth less primarily for the lack of absorbancy and rough texture.

I thought of Lloyd Doggett, another Austin fixture who is more in the usual Austin mode (ie a barking moonbat). but it’s easy to avoid confusing the two, leftist Lloyd is as pale as that famous oppressed woman of color, Elizabeth Warren.
Not only does he support the right to bear arms, but he knows what Bcc is and when to use it. This guy is a catch ladies.

unrelated note, but one of the only outright conservative professors I had was in a small business course. guy was hilarious, abrasive, and very quick to call out college kids stupidity. one of the handful of the 40 or so professors i had that i can still recall by name. someone like him probably wouldnt last a week in todays ‘one party’ academic environment.
