In Germany, owning guns is a privilege that can be taken away—not for breaking the law, but for holding the wrong political opinion.
Members and supporters of the right-leaning Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party are now facing mass gun license revocations. The reason? The German government has labeled the AfD a “right-wing extremist” group—a political designation that suddenly makes its members “unreliable” under the country’s gun laws. And just like that, firearms must be surrendered or destroyed.
If that sounds outrageous, it should. But it’s not surprising.
Here in the U.S., we’ve already seen our own political establishment flirt with these kinds of tactics. Remember when New York’s then-Governor Andrew Cuomo said pro-gun conservatives “have no place” in his state? Or when San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors labeled the NRA a “domestic terrorist organization”? Label first. Punish later.
That’s the playbook being used in Germany right now. And it’s worth paying attention to.
Government Labels a Popular Opposition Party “Extremist”—Then Comes the Crackdown
In 2021, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV), designated the entire AfD as a “suspected threat to democracy.” That move allowed the government to surveil, wiretap, and investigate the party and its members.
It didn’t stop there.
Courts have now upheld revoking gun licenses from AfD members, based solely on their political affiliation. In one case, a couple in North Rhine-Westphalia lost legal ownership of over 200 firearms. They weren’t criminals. They weren’t accused of wrongdoing. They were just AfD members.
Another court in Thuringia blocked a blanket gun ban for all AfD members—but left the door wide open for revocations on a case-by-case basis.
In Saxony-Anhalt, officials are reviewing the gun licenses of 109 AfD members. As of last fall, 72 had already been targeted for revocation, with the rest under active review. The justification? Supporting a party the state now claims is “working against the constitutional order.”
And the courts are backing it up. According to a March 2024 ruling, former or current AfD supporters “lack the reliability” required to legally own firearms.
Why the AfD’s Platform Sounds Familiar to American Ears
You don’t have to support the AfD to see the dangerous precedent here. In fact, many of their stated positions would be right at home in American politics:
- Support for limited government and individual liberty
- Stronger penalties for violent crime
- Calls for unbiased law enforcement and judicial independence
- Opposition to political censorship
- A demand for simple, fair taxes for middle- and low-income citizens
On gun rights, their platform is clear: “A liberal and constitutional state has to trust its citizens… The AfD opposes any form of restrictions of civil rights by tightening firearms legislation.”
Sound extreme to you? Or does that sound like something a lot of Americans already believe?
European Values, or Political Weaponization?
At the 2024 Munich Security Conference, U.S. Senator J.D. Vance warned European leaders that the real threat to democracy wasn’t external—it was internal. He cited censorship, election manipulation, and silencing dissent as signs that Western democracies are losing their way.
Vance specifically called out the Munich organizers for banning populist parties from the event, not because they were violent or criminal, but because their views didn’t align with the ruling class.
What we’re seeing in Germany today proves his point.
Label a political opponent “dangerous.” Use that label to strip them of rights. Target their supporters. Marginalize them from public life. And if they own guns? Take those, too.
This isn’t some far-off dystopian future. It’s happening now. In a Western democracy.
This Could Happen Here—And Some Already Want It To
Before you dismiss this as a uniquely European issue, remember this: the Biden administration has repeatedly warned that “domestic extremism” is the greatest threat to national security. Not China. Not cyberattacks. Not narco-terrorists. American citizens.
If you think that political language won’t eventually be used to push disarmament here at home, think again. The blueprint has already been written.
In Germany, they didn’t need new laws. They just reinterpreted existing ones through the lens of “extremism” and used that to silence—and disarm—the opposition.
They redefined lawful gun owners as threats to democracy. Then they acted accordingly.
The Bottom Line
When the state decides your political affiliation makes you “unreliable,” your rights are already gone.
This isn’t just a German problem. It’s a warning for all of us.
Whether you vote left, right, or something else entirely, the right to speak your mind, defend your life, and participate in your nation’s political life should never depend on who’s in charge—or what party you support.
Today it’s AfD members in Germany. Tomorrow? It could be you.
And the Germans have deployed armored battalion to Lithuania. First foreign deployment since WWII.
Which would be the majority of the combat power of the neutered Germany army.

The amount of things that get discussed for revoking of pistol permits up here that thankfully get squashed re don’t want outside courts involved is wild. We left European values behind for good reason.
This is why all forms of government should be kept small, weak, and poor, it is the nature of government to always try to expand the size and scope of its power and resources. The only way to preserve liberty in the face of this kind of creeping authoritarianism is to occasionally take an ax to government departments and chop away at their programs and personnel until you have trimmed the mouse that has grown to the size of an elephant back down to the size of a dog. It would also be a good idea to fire a third of all government employees and reduce the budget by forty percent every decade to encourage department heads to get rid of the deadwood.
I probably have been blocked from promotions because I have tended to find simple efficient and achievable solutions to problems throughout my career that very rarely involved hiring more people. Often much is not done to try to justify more money to expand to do what should have been done with existing personnel.

Budget, span of control, headcount are coins of the realm for the ambitious. Threatening to limit any one of them will limit your career. (Don’t ask me how I know)

In present day Amerika, all “rights” are a privilege, and you must prevail in court to prevent privileges from being withheld.

In reality, the nation has been engaged in civil war since the founding. One faction wanted to establish heretical nobility (including a king), while the other faction wanted voters to be supreme. The ongoing civil war burped in 1861, but resumed as before in 1865.

Not sure I follow that logic. Almost the entire left wing (communist) culture is encouraging criticzing the jews, indeed removing them from society. I don’t see any attempt to throttle “hate speech” (the left loves hate speech), regarding jews or Israel.
On the other hand, if the guns of all the law abiding citizens were confiscated, there would be no reason to fear that disfavored speech could result in taking away gun rights.
Florida and several other states made or are in the process of making hate speech laws specifically for jewish criticism. Almost to the point where having a critical opinion and expressing it is a crime. Sort of the reactive overreach issue.

The entire concept of “hate speech” is looney. Yes, you can yell “fire” in a crowded venue. It is the result of that speech that is potentially sanctionable, not the speech itself.

I wish this would resonate with leftists, but I think it’s unlikely to appeal to many. For example, you’d think that with the Trump admin using the threat of pulling federal funding to change local school policy, leftists would begin to understand the problems with that kind of system. But the few I’ve raised this with just seem upset that someone else is pulling the strings attached to heavy federal funding of education for a change. At best, their support for freedom is likely to last exactly as long as it takes them to get back in the driver’s seat.

Germany has many beautiful lakes, leading to a heightened risk of tragic boating accidents in which all registered firearms are lost.
At the end of World War 2, the United States dictated the Constitutions of our vanquished foes. Tellingly, the United States did not dictate Constitutions similar to our own; Constitutions that limited the power of government and guaranteed the inalienable rights ofthe people. Instead the United States dictated Constitutions that the Leftist in power at the time would have liked to have in these United States: Constitutions giving vast powers to governments over their own people while lacking anything we would recognize as our Bill of Rights. And since those times, the Leftists in these United States have been holding up those Constitutions as the ones we should emulate.
Make no mistake. That State Power is what the Left wants here.

Governments are instituted to /secure/ rights. The right exist independent of government or its protections. Germans have the exact same rights as Chinese, and they have the exact same rights as us.

As a german national following your cultural development quite close, I can say that my country is on a path to hell. Economically, ecologically and as a society. We cannot criticize our politicians anymore or calling them names for there is a special law prohibiting this, we put e-windmills and photovoltaic fields on agricultural land and our newly “elected” government just kicked our constitution aside when they used the old government (because of their majorities – AfD has stopping minority power since last election in February) to make the biggest debts in recorded history. And on top of all this we have totally unvetted migration into Germany from the worst places on earth. Killings and stabbings are a daily occurrence right now and the germans even get used to two year olds in their kindergarten groups getting stabbed by migrant adults. BTW, this post would likely cost me my gun license were it reported to the “right” channels.
I had high hopes when I heard your vp’s speech in munich but our media and politicians only spat lies and hate about it – orange man bad is the only news all day.
And the worst thing is the indifference of the people – I am really afraid for my kids for the world I grew up in, with my country willingly embedded in a great coalition of free countries led by the USA, is gone now.
With all the upcoming EU laws and the digital ID and currency I am seriously considering leaving. The continent as a whole is on a very unhealthy track.
