The debate over what kind of gun is best for home defense — pistol, rifle, or shotgun — is almost as fiercely fought as the caliber (9mm vs. .45) or platform (GLOCK vs. 1911) wars. But whatever your choice may be, there’s no denying that a scattergun can be absolutely devastating when defending the homefront against an attacker.

That’s exactly what a New Orleans man discovered the hard way when he attacked his girlfriend.

From nola.com . . .

The violent confrontation began Sunday night when (Miguel) Ramirez and his girlfriend were involved in a “physical altercation” somewhere in New Orleans, according to (Capt. Jason) Rivarde. No details were available Thursday about that incident.

After the fight, the couple went to her grandparents’ home on 15th Street in Bridge City about 11:30 p.m. to pick up their three young children, according to Rivarde. The woman went into the house to get the kids, who are under the age of 5.

The woman told her grandfather about the altercation and asked him to contact authorities for help.

But before he could call 911, Ramirez stormed into the house and began beating the grandfather, authorities said. The grandfather suffered a broken nose, severe swelling around his eyes and bruising on his face.

That’s when the abuser of women and old men dragged his girlfriend out of the house. That was also when the 66-year-old man grabbed ol’ Betsy.

“The grandfather, fearing that (Ramirez) is going to harm his granddaughter, gets his shotgun and fires one time,” Rivarde said.

Grandad didn’t realized that he’d hit the attacker who drove off with the woman. But Ramirez showed up at a local hospital not much later complaining of an acute case of lead poisoning in his crotch and upper thigh.

Rivard’s been charged with home invasion, second-degree battery, simple kidnapping and domestic abuse-child endangerment, so he’ll have time to nurse his wounds during his stay at the graybar hotel. And it’s just another one of hundreds of thousandsmaybe millions — of defensive gun uses that take place in this country every year.

While Mr. Ramirez is living at the Parish’s expense, his girlfriend might want to be sure that she has the means to deter an attack when he’s eventually released.

    • Nice!

Would also be nice if, right after finishing his soprano solo part, he got wacked by a Soprano.

    • Isn’t that wonderful?……not. I have nothing but scorn for this cretin who thought nothing of attacking his girl friend AND her father. He deserves a LONG stay in that “graybar hotel”.

  1. to bad the man’s shotgun did not hold a tighter pattern like mine does that way the woman beater would not have any reason to be around women because he would not have anything left down there

    • That is where a manual Choke is great. Mine is 3 inch pattern at 30. ft. Will go through 1/2 plywood at 30 ft. So far never used on human.

        • Chokes aren’t either manual or automatic.
Most must be manually inserted into the barrel, but not all.
Once inserted, there’s no choice as to type of choke; it is what it is; modified, full, etc. They don’t automatically change to suit the situation.
Many shotguns, mostly double barrel models, will have a different choke in each barrel, not interchangeable.
So, no, at least in the way I understand “automatic.” chokes aren’t automatic. They’re fixed, whether they are inserted, or an integral part of the barrel itself.

      • Full choke on number 6 creates a particularly tight pattern out to 25 yards that will stop anyone. Try it on plywood and see if isn’t impressive.

  2. No wife. No debt. Finished raising my children by myself. Both grown and gone. Not really old, but not that far away. Don’t fuck with us. We will kill you. Nothing left to loose.

  3. something like this is a very good advert for a 410 short bbl with a full choke ..very little collateral damage and NO LEFT-OVERS….

  4. And grand daughter should examine her life choices re. breeding like a dog in heat and maybe choose better “boyfriends”, sheeshs, 3 kids under 5 out of wedlock?
BTW good for gramps, maybe this boy won’t be able to reproduce.

      • Dumbo-
Children without intact families are far more likely to live in poverty, be abused, get into a life of crime, and get knocked up themselves. In addition, single moms and their kids cost society a fortune. It isn’t about the piece of paper from the state. Don’t make kids until you are willing to make a lifetime commitment to them and their mother (or father of you are a chick).

I’m really sick and tired of all the irresponsible people in this country.

        • Two people who are not officially married can stay together and have a kid or kids.

That would be “out of wedlock” but it’s not a broken home. Friends of mine have done this simply because they don’t believe in the “institution” of marriage or because it offers some financial benefit in their particular situation. They and their are doing just fine in loving homes with two parents.

        • Strych9,
I pretty much agree with you, and that’s why I mentioned that it is about the lifetime commitment, and not the piece of paper from the State. Marriage certificates are a relatively recent development. Marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman is timeless. That bond is the foundation of society.

        • Why get married? It’s smarter not too, then the single mom can collect all that sweet welfare. Jobs are for suckers.

        • lol Hey “Dumbo”, millions of people are “born out of wedlock” and are great people with great families. Being born out of wedlock means nothing, try again bro.

    • LOL, out of wedlock? Jesus what a sniveling little dog you are. “Having children without first getting a permission slip from the government is BAD!!!”. In the words of Samuel Adams “Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you…”

    • Maybe the Granddaughter needs to start making better choices also. She brought the cretin into the grandfathers life and made babies with him. Not once but apparently a several times.

  5. Shot in an area with major blood vessels but still able to drag the victim to his vehicle and leave- not a very successful defensive gun use. Can’t be sure but I wonder if he was using birdshot… because generally buckshot to the pelvic area will have an immediate effect.

  6. Whoa! Grandpa’s “staged and Ready” shotgun wasn’t available when he got badly beaten and he could have just as well been knocked out or killed. That would have left his Granddaughter and Grandkids at the enraged BGs mercy and it could have gone down hill in several bad directions from there.

Ended better than it started and that’s the only good news. The Lesson folks should learn from this is: Agun out of reach, might no be reached when you need it most! Many people feel safest in their own homes, don’t believe that false sense of security. Carry a gun on your person, even when you feel Zero need for it; no one gets to choose when they get attacted.

I guess we are all assuming bird shot and it probably was if it’s inside a house with near neighbours.

As with all firearms it depends on what hit where. Centre hit with .22 beats graze with .45 or graze with buckshot.

Easy to miss moving target even with shotgun. If your ever at a range that has the clays made for rolling on the ground give it a try. Most people miss the first 5 or 6 when we try with new shooters.

  7. Rivard’s been charged ? Why was the Captain charged? I thought the perp was Ramirez. Am I missing something here?
