Tirelessly looking for ways to reduce gun ownership and make armed self defense a less likely prospect in the Empire State, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law yesterday that prohibits schools from arming teachers or other school staff.

“The answer to the gun violence epidemic plaguing this country has never been and never will be more guns,” Cuomo said in a statement.

“These measures will help slow the proliferation of guns by keeping unneeded firearms out of school zones and helping to ensure unwanted or illegal guns don’t fall into dangerous hands,” he added.

What the new law really does, of course, is prevent local school districts from exercising the option to have trained, armed staff on hand to respond to active threats to students.

We’d been told that state level preemption laws like this are a bad thing. Apparently it’s only the preemption laws that make armed self defense easier and more effective that anti-gun advocates and politicians have a problem with. If the preemption law in question takes guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, that’s just good government policy.

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms issued the following statement on New York’s new prohibition . . .

BELLEVUE, WA – By placing his signature on legislation that prevents local New York State school districts from authorizing armed volunteer staff, including teachers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has made schools more vulnerable to attack and signaled that fact to every deranged person looking for a headline, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

Under the new law, schools will not be allowed to authorize anyone who is not a security guard, school resource officer or police officer to have a firearm on school grounds. Cuomo argued that this measure will help keep “unwanted or illegal” guns off school campuses. It comes right after he signed other anti-rights legislation extending the background check waiting period, banning so-called “undetectable guns” and expanding so-called
“safe storage” requirements.

“Governor Cuomo’s answer to failed restrictive gun laws is more new gun laws that prevent people from being able to protect themselves, their families and, in this case, the children under their instruction and care, from violent criminals and crazy people,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Cuomo’s adherence to, and perpetuation of, the safety myth of so-called ‘gun-free school zones’ borders on delusion.

“All he has done by signing these gun control bills is to make it harder for honest citizens to be legally armed, while criminals won’t be the least bit deterred,” he continued. “The real danger to people in New York is his appointment of his cronies to parole boards that let violent offenders out of prison early.”

Gottlieb said the governor, now in his third term, is enacting policies that are driving good citizens out of the Empire State.

“He thinks that allowing armed school staff will result in accidents or acts of violence, but that has not happened anywhere such programs are in place,” Gottlieb observed. “He thinks disarming law-abiding citizens will make them safer. Because of Cuomo-backed anti-gun rights policies in New York, people are moving in droves to less gun restrictive states like South Carolina, Florida and Texas where they can have the means to self-defense.”

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (www.ccrkba.org) is one of the nation's premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass- roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.

  1. New York, New Jersey, and California are a cesspool and should be left to the liberals with a second chance fence keeping them in. There is way too much tolerance of the left for intolerance from the left. The left is entitled to their idea of what rights are but that doesn’t give them the right to tell others they have to have the same view.

    • all too predictable…but PA just passed a similar bill…the dems will never embrace the concept that teachers will do whatever is necessary to protect their kids….

  2. A stupid law from a stupid state, though the reality is that this changes virtually nothing here in NY. Our school districts are on the same team as FUAC himself, and no school district was going to authorize carry on school grounds, even when they had the hypothetical right to do so. The political sewers of NY need cleaning out something fierce.

    • Snip off “downstate” and a lot of the problems would correct themselves. Without NYC, Cuomo wouldn’t be elected dog catcher.

I absolutely love upstate NY. It’s a beautiful state full of good people, and it’s my home. It’s a horrible tragedy that we’re under the yoke of NYC’s liberal tyranny.

        • It is too bad that upstate New York could not be their own state, break away, and be on its own. For I have heard it is a beautiful area, and NOT like ultra liberal, New York city. There are some nice folks in New York state. It is too bad that “you-cannot-fix-stupid” Cuomo seems to want to be the voice for everyone else in such a fine state.

      • Agree completely. Upstate is a whole different world, with a lot to offer. Grew up here, and it is hard to leave even with our state government continually “incentivizing” me to do so.

      • Well gee, sounds like a lot of us in Cali. Surprised you haven’t been told by some trolls here to either move or deal with what *you* voted for. Castrate [metaphorically speaking] many of the legislators, bureaucrats and community leaders and, like you stated, the problems correct themselves.

  3. Remember..
    if your a bad guy..
that wants to do bad things.. here in Texas..
Your victims in Ca.. or Ny.. are much more likely unarmed.. AND if you get caught there.. you wont get executed…😁👍

  4. The residents of N Y. Voted for this jerk, let them & them alone pay the price for their liberalism, the west coast isn’t that far away from this kind of nonsense either.

    • Maybe the residents of NYC. Blaming the entire state of NY for this totalitarian dictator is akin to blaming every American for 8 years of Obama, including you.

      • Lovely phrase I noticed, perhaps here: “Blue-city dominated state…”

I’d say “captive” or similar. We don’t need to go learn about imperialism, we have it in practice, in NYS, CA, possibly NJ, and of course they’re working diligently to achieve it nationally, and internationally.

        • the future may well include states breaking apart rather than the civil war that is so often predicted..

  5. Cuomo’s New Gun Prohibition Has Made NY Schools Less Safe

Yes however that is the Commiecrat’s goal, they could care less for a child or anyone else,it’s all about adherence to the agenda/manifesto of the state.

  6. Governor scumo is a blooming onion want to be. I didn’t vote dopey in and without NYC he wouldn’t have been voted in for anything. Him and his punk father should be planted together. Just shows you how much NYC assholes actually run this cesspool!!@

  7. They want more kids murdered.in order for their gun grab to proceed they need long funeral processions maybe a disgruntled new Yorker will take him out

  8. What’s the point of controlling a patronage system if people can succeed without it?

Since NYS patronage works so well with regulation, taxation, and subsidy, it’s only natural that they’d extend it to the ability to keep yourself alive. “Nice life you have there. Would be a shame if anybody tried to take it (and you couldn’t do anything about that.)”

Not the first time. See: Sullivan Act

  9. “…the governor, now in his third term, is enacting policies that are driving good citizens out of the Empire State”. You got that right. I apologize to my fellow pro 2A New Yorkers, I can’t take Li’l Duce Cuomo and all the other libtards up here any longer. I am out of here in 6 months, off to South Carolina. I retired from NY sate civil service and am retiring from the National Guard in December, got to bail!!

    • If you’re retiring, I don’t completely blame you. Besides, NY is losing roughly 50,000 people a year and this shows no sign of abating, so you aren’t alone. Enjoy SC! I’ve been to Charleston once, and it was absolutely beautiful.

  10. Cuomo dealt the children in NY a death sentence. Hope he’s happy. Next time there’s a shooting in a school he should be charged with aiding an abetting.

  11. They also banned undetectable and 3d printed guns. Since you need a permit to possess a handgun anyway it’s another meaningless gesture.

Anyway I doubt many or any NY schools authorized (in writing!) anyone to carry in the schools, even upstate. NY tends to put cops in schools instead of trusting non-leos to carry a gun. There have been teachers and other employees arrested for doing so, however, when all they were doing was carrying because they didn’t want to be massacred if someone tried to Columbine them.

  12. He just a simple Italian farmer who has no idea how the rest of the world operates outside his village.

  13. Guess we can look forward to some mass shootings in New York schools soon.

Damn that NRA for giving guns to criminals!

(If you didn’t catch sarcasm, you weren’t paying attention.)

  14. Gottlieb, please provide me the statistical evidence to back up your view point.
    (the same goes for Cuomo).

School shootings are still rate enough events that meaningful statistics don’t prove anything either way, but you can selectively pick and choose to prove your point to either side.

  15. Everything about this guy just don’t make any sense.
Fix your subway system; fix the. Apple Rotten Apple he’s been screwing up since his terms in office. Fix the homelessness in NYS, great jobs, and leave the We The People, Constitutional 2A all well alone. Good citizens don’t go mugging or shooting people.
Vote This Scum Out Of Office.
    Good Bye Good Ole
    NY.
