G19 Gen5

In case you didn’t know, GLOCK has released Gen 5 pistols. Specifically, they’ve updated the GLOCK 17 and GLOCK 19. The presser proclaims the new guns reflect the gunmaker’s “constant pursuit of perfection.” Does that mean actual perfection is impossible? Yes! If we go by The First Council of Nicea. If we go buy a GLOCK, that’ll make them happy, regardless. Here’s the official pitch . . .

G17 Gen5

SMYRNA, GA. –-(Ammoland.com)- GLOCK, Inc., introduced a new generation of confidence today with the launch of the G19 Gen5 and G17 Gen5 pistols. The Gen5 pistols feature over twenty design changes which distinguish them from their Gen4 predecessors.

“The development of our Gen5 pistols was the result of the constant pursuit of perfection and a desire to meet the requests of the consumer market,” said GLOCK, Inc. VP Josh Dorsey. “We have combined the standards of high-level performance and reliability with distinctive design enhancements to improve durability, accuracy, and performance. The benefits enhance the shooter experience at the range and in high-stress situations where fractions of a second matter.”

The Gen5 pistols are a variation of the M pistol used by the FBI. Through rigorous testing and development, GLOCK has combined the historical reliability and trust in the brand with precisely engineered design changes to meet the demand of consumers world-wide.

Among the design changes are five key features. The GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB) utilizes new barrel rifling to deliver improved accuracy. The removal of the finger grooves and an added ambidextrous slide stop delivers improved control and flexibility. The nDLC finish is a tougher and more durable finish that is exclusive to the GLOCK manufacturing process. Introduction of a flared mag-well increases performance by making it easier to funnel the magazine into the mag-well, particularly in high-stress situations.

The roots of the Gen5 pistols lie in a request by Federal Law Enforcement for a new service pistol. “Our goal was to meet the demanding needs of law enforcement agencies while maintaining our standard of perfection,” said VP Josh Dorsey. “Once the pistols we submitted proved themselves in testing and were adopted, consumers began asking for those pistols. The Gen5 pistols we are introducing today meet that demand.”

  1. I watched the whole thing. I think it is a lot of noise about very little. Why would a current Glock owner want to buy the Gen5? The one they have now will be doing a good job long after they are dead.

  2. I’ll get one eventually simply for the lack of finger grooves. Local shops are asking $599 so maybe next year.

    • Glock store had them for $549, so I figured that was on par with the Gen 4. That was a day or two ago, so they could’ve up’d the price.

    • OK, I will admit when I’m wrong. Yesterday I said we wouldn’t sell a GEN 5 until October. Sold our first 17 today, $560.
The new owner says it feels and shoots just like, wait for it, every other GLOCK he has shot. Go figure…

  3. I just received a SilencerCo Maxim 9 which uses Glock 17 mags. The grip is far slimmer, smaller, more curved and FAR more comfortable than the Block. If SilencerCo can make a good grip around the Glock mag, Glock could also.

  4. When the prices normalize and all the first adopters (aka beta testers) find all the flaws and Glock fixes them, then I will pick one up. I’ve owned 6 Glocks before and got rid of them over the Sig P320 due to the finger grooves alone. My knuckles just didn’t fit them and they could be uncomfortable to shoot. Now, without the fingers grooves, I will pick a G19.

    • If you’re referring to FN’s current line, only the 5.7 is as reliable, at over twice the price.

Watch MAC’s gauntlet test of the 509 to see how great they are. Not!

  5. The Glock improvements look interesting. Unfortunately, Glocks made after 1998 cannot be sold by FFLs in MA because of the Attorney General’s bogus “safety” regulations.

What’s the hangup? Well, the excuse is that the AG doesn’t like the shape of Glock’s loaded chamber indicator, while Glock thinks that the AG should kiss Gaston’s old Austrian heinie.

  6. I think I’ll pass on a Gen 5. None of the features are a big enough deal to make me want to get rid of or augment the Gen 3 or 4 pistols I already own.

Even the ambi-slide stop is not really that appealing even as a left handed shooter I never use it on my FNP-45 and I don’t see a need for one now.

  7. I like the look of the new 19 and will probably pick one up eventually but as far as the 17 goes I don’t see enough improvement to replace my gen4 just to get the new model, especially since I really like the CMC flat trigger in my current gun.

I admit that while the trigger feels pretty good it’s not such a huge improvement to rationalize the cost to buy again for another gun. Cool looking though.

  8. Every 5th article here is about Glock pretending to make a better pistol with this version.

Seems like a drip drip plot to convince us these underwhelming pistols are gonna Make Glock Great Again.
