It’s not only dragon-borne homicidal monarchs who are endangered by crossbows. It turns out that everyday Germans now need to watch out, too. As the Guardian reports,

Police in Germany are investigating the mysterious discovery of three bodies shot with crossbow bolts in a Bavarian hotel room.

Investigators are still trying to determine the relationship between the three, found dead on Saturday, and what exactly happened in the room in a Passau hotel near the Austrian border.

The police spokesman Stefan Gaisbauer said there were no indications that anyone other than those found dead had been involved, but it was not yet clear what had happened.

No one else was involved? Did one of the three commit suicide with a crossbow?

The case gets still curious-er. When investigators went to the apartment of one of the three people killed at the Bavarian hotel, they found two more bodies. From the AP . . .

BERLIN (AP) — The bodies of two women have been found at the apartment in Germany of one of three people who died at a hotel several hundred kilometers away in a mysterious case involving crossbows, police said Monday.

Police said they didn’t immediately have details of the identity of the women found in a search of the apartment in Wittingen, in northern Germany, and what happened to them. They said in a statement that they are investigating possible links to the three people found dead in Passau, near the Austrian border, on Saturday.

The discovery added a new level of mystery to that case. Investigators were still trying Monday to determine the relationship between the three people whose bodies shot with crossbow bolts were found in Passau.

Bavarian police spokesman Stefan Gaisbauer said earlier Monday there are no indications that anyone other than those found dead were involved but that it is not yet clear what happened.

“We assume that no other people were involved in the deaths of the three,” he said, adding that autopsy results were expected Tuesday.

The dead, a 53-year-old man and two women aged 33 and 30, are all German citizens. The man and the older woman are from the village of Berod in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany, while the younger woman was last registered as living in Wittingen. Police didn’t release further details on the identities of the three.

The bodies were found at the hotel in Passau on Saturday morning by an employee who opened the door to their three-bed room when they didn’t respond to repeated knocking.

The man and the older woman were lying together in bed, while the younger woman was lying on the floor.

Passau prosecutor Walter Feiler told the German news agency dpa later Monday that the couple on the bed had several bolts in them and was found holding hands. The woman on the floor had one bolt in her body.

Two crossbows were found Saturday. Police said Monday they had found a third, unused crossbow inside a bag.

Crossbows can be purchased legally in Germany by all people aged 18 or older.

If we didn’t know better, we might conclude that someone who’s bent on murder and mayhem will manage to find a way, no matter how stringent the laws are. And that keeping citizens from protecting themselves with the easiest, most effective means necessary only endangers innocent lives.

But that’s kooky talk, right?

  1. The Chinese figured out the advantages of repeating crossbows about 2500 years ago. Even had large cap magazines. So were the CB’s used in this report single shot, repeating, or semi full auto bolt launchers? 😉 Much too deadly to allow private citizens to have them in any case – BAN THEM ALL! 🙂

  2. It was announced Today that 2 more bodies were discovered at a separate location with connections to this event.

  3. More proof that killing is a matter of will, not weapons. Too bad that the damn socialists aren’t bright enough to figure that out on their own.

    • But those Germans shot with crossbows are not nearly as dead as they would be if they were shot by (newer with) a gun. They only could have get even more dead if a fully semi automatic military style assault weapon with high capacity magazine was used. Ban them all!

  4. I read this article earlier, and surprisingly this is not the only cross bow attack that they have had recently. There was also a man who was shot through the torso and into his right arm while installing a satellite on his roof…..and a 5 year old that was shot in a completely separate case.

But this story was the strangest. a couple and a single woman rent a hotel….the next day they find the couple dead on the bed holding hands and the single woman face down dead on the floor. While searching for clues at the single woman’s house they find two dead women inside her house. Weird on top of weird.

  5. Well, this sounds like the handiwork of the vigilante: RobinHood! Er… Hawkeye! Er… the Hood! Er… Katness Aberdeen! Er… Legolas!

Oh no! We have a copycat killer! Any tools that they use in comics or movies for self-defense… we must ban them ALL!!

  6. Police later declined to comment on reports that an apple was found atop the head of each victim.

  7. No one needs a crossbow that shoots more than 1 bolt per minute. Ya don’t go hunting with that…

Seriously, this is the strangest story I’ve seen in quite a while.

  8. The dead, a 53-year-old man and two women aged 33 and 30, are all German citizens. The man and the older woman are from the village of Berod in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany, while the younger woman was last registered as living in Wittingen.

Perhaps a ménage à trois — and the spouse of one of the participants took exception???

  9. Slow to reload, but I’m pretty sure I can out shoot the average handgun owner with my Tenpoint Crossbow . I can shoot baseball size groups at 40 yards all day long , and I hardly practice . Hard to conceal though .

Reloading a crossbow takes time, and they’re fairly loud for two people to be shot while holding hands in bed would require two shooters firing at once or this was some planned event by the dead.

  10. I can’t see how one guy could kill 3 people with a crossbow. The article left out any struggle and that seems weird to me. Two laying in bed one on the floor? Maybe they was asleep? It just seems like one of the three would have tried escaping. I’d blame this on the Mooselims but that would have entailed the use of a dull corn knife.

  11. Well, to be fair if I lived in a country with Joerg Sprave on the loose, I might want crossbow control too.

  12. They and we should not forget William Tell!!!! And why he was shooting bolts at his kid’s head!!! Even though tonight on Jeopardy the three teacher contestants could not correctly identify the country William was a citizen of.

  13. Paul “student of the gun” markel, wrote in his book about gun control history, that crossbows were in fact controlled and regulated by the government. They didn’t want the peasants having the weapons as soldiers.

  14. It’s a good thing the Germans outlawed dragons, and conduct The Dragon Slaying Festival (Drachenstich) in the village of Furth im Wald in Bavaria since 1590. Otherwise, last Sunday, a blonde dragonrider would have chased down this crossbow villian, and, in a mad rage, burned down the old town of Passau and the overlooking Oberhaus, a 13th-century hilltop fortress housing a museum and observation tower.

  15. WTF? Crossbows, ballistae, bolt throwers, scorpions.
Burn them all and all who use them.
    Dracarys! 🔥🐊

  16. It was just an accident while they were cleaning their crossbows…Ja,Das ist alles…just an accident ! My trebuchet is nearly komplete!
