Though the ATF’s clarification letter stating that it’s acceptable to shoulder an unmodified arm brace was sent to the law firm of SB Tactical, originators of the Pistol Stabilizing Brace, manufacturers of competing products are declaring it a win for them, too. The argument is that the letter speaks in generalities, rather than referencing a specific brand or model, and states that the market’s interpretation of their January 2015 Open Letter — which definitely applied to all pistol brace manufacturers and was taken to imply that shouldering a braced pistol was a felony —  was incorrect . . .

That particular passage states:

To the extent the January 2015 Open Letter implied or has been construed to hold that incidental, sporadic, or situational “use” of an arm-brace (in its original approved configuration) equipped firearm from a firing position at or near the shoulder was sufficient to constitute “redesign,” such interpretations are incorrect and not consistent with ATF’s interpretation of the statute or the manner in which it has historically been enforced.

Whether you believe this clarification letter applies only to SB Tactical or to all arm braces that have received ATF FTB approval, the champagne has certainly been popped all around.

Over at the Gear Head Works booth at NRAAM 2017, they were showing off their Tailhook MOD 1 and MOD 2 braces on all manner of pistol configurations, from ARs to CZ Scorpions to MP5s to, you guessed it, GLOCKs…

  1. That’s good. I’m just waiting for someone to screw it up again.

In the meantime, how about let’s get rid of the NFA, or at least the self-contradictory parts of it involving barrel length.

    • Exactly, every useful idiot running out and taking pictures of them shooting their arm-brace from the shoulder is surely not going to get traction from some .gov MiB. Wankers.

  2. I tried shouldering my wife in hopes of turning her into a supermodel – and was wondering why it didn’t work! Now it all makes sense.

    • Are you sure you didn’t just cheek weld, or maybe put her on your chest? Because if you shoulder her properly, you definitely will redesign her into something completely different.

      • Dammit, maybe that was it! Too late now too. The expiration date was 4/24.

Oh well, at least she cooks real good…

  3. That’s a weird pic. Funny way to GLOCK-out with your stock out. Felony was a girl I knew in college.

  4. I actually like the previous ruling, as it implied I could redesign a stock to be a brace as long as I didnt shoulder it. 😉

  5. If what that ATF rep supposedly told the Shockwave folks is true, that ATF letter does apply to all braces in general. However, per that same conversation between Shockwave and the ATF, there may be further clarification, including some LOP guidance, that could mean shouldering that Glock as shown may still result in your dog’s untimely death.

Now, if you took a Mod 1 Tailhook and mated it to a ~4″ buffer tube attached to that Endo adapter, that might pass the alleged LOP sniff test…

    • Yeah, they mentioned that also. A stock “sniff test” basically, saying that the brace should stop on one’s forearm and if the length is such that it’s longer than that and therefore in the realm of normal stock lengths (like over 13.25″ or something) then it won’t fly.

  6. So this is what, the fourth reversal the ATF has done? Yeah, it is time to end NFA and the ATF, both are harmful to the Constitution.

  7. I didn’t know I could use one on a pistol like that.

Something like that might work real nice on major caliber revolvers for hunting…

    • My endo brace on my g17 is pretty fun. I certainly think a 500sw could be a good time with a brace. Might help someone not develope a flinch with magnums.

  8. Its just time to do away with this SBR bull$#it. If you can legally own a pistol, you should also be able to own a pistol with a stock on it. As a legal strategy, that would be the first NFA rule I would try to reverse…not those evil, nasty silencers that assassins use. You can’t credibly defend the SBR rule in a society that allows handgun ownership, that’s the weakest link in the NFA, that’s where you start unwinding it.

  9. Gearhead needs to get their website up with the times. Got an account started to purchase their mod1 and no green security and lock in my tool bar! So no order by me not to mention it seems they only except PayPal? I’m going to call them this week to order a Mod1 then their Mod 2 when that starts shipping. They both look like great brace.

  10. There is absolutely no way that dude in the top picture was not saying “Pew! Pew! Pew!” when that photo was snapped.
