Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly using the emotion that comes from her 2011 shooting in Tuscon, Arizona to demand “something needs to be done” to stop “gun violence,” and that something (according to Mark Kelly) is the ban of “assault weapons.” He has testified to that effect before the U.S. Senate, as well as in Colorado. However, it appears that Mark Kelly is another shining example of the belief of the civilian disarmament folks that the same logic they use to try and disarm the general population doesn’t apply to themselves. Breitbart has the story . . .

Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an “assault weapon,” he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

Kelly reportedly bought the AR-15 and a 1911-style semi-automatic pistol at a gun store in Tucson, Arizona.

[…]

According to McCabe, witnesses to the purchases claimed Kelly purchased “high capacity” magazines as well.

Only after the purchase was discovered did Mark Kelly post on his Facebook indicating that the AR-15 purchase was an impulse buy, and that he would be turning it over to the Tuscon PD as soon as he got it from the gun store.

This is the exact same firearm that Kelly had testified had no purpose other than to kill large numbers of people. So then why was Kelly buying one? And why did he try to keep it a secret? Is Mark Kelly about to go on a mass shooting spree, perhaps the illustration of the need for stricter gun control laws he was talking about? Probably just as likely that happening as any other law abiding citizen — nearly a zero percent chance.

Like I said, another shining example of the double standard gun control advocates apply to firearms. Its OK for them to own guns, but the uneducated rednecks who buy them and are too stupid to be responsible with them (the general public) should be disarmed for their own good.

  1. Wow. Just wow. The least he could have done was ask the ATF to pick one up on their weekly cartel supply run.

  2. When this fscker runs for office (and he will, I guarantee it) he needs to have this hypocrisy brought up at every possible opportunity.

He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He wasn’t buying those guns to make a point, he was buying them because he could and because he thought he could get away with it. The only thing that would make this utterly perfect is if he’d bought a Glock instead of a 1911, and if his spare AR mags were Magpul PMAGs.

How about it, Nick? Can we find out if the mags were PMAGs?

    • I think he was getting the 1911 because they already have a Glock. From what I remember reading, Gabby, ironically enough, had a Glock 19, the same model she was shot with.

  3. Busted. LOL What a boatload of hypocrisy. I bet if this hadn’t been made public, he no doubt, would have kept it. Good at least his wallet is around a grand lighter, with nothing to show for it.

  4. What struck me was how completely UNsuprised I was to find out Mark Kelly is a flaming hypocrite. Nice backpedal after getting caught, numbnuts!

  5. Isn’t he lying on the FFL forms if the gun was never meant for his use and is just being passed on to another entity?

    • Were we prosecutors, this would qualify as a straw man purchase as his publicly stated intention is to immediately turn them over to someone else.

‘Natch, it ain’t gonna play that way.

    • Why don’t we all call up the ATF to report Mark Kelly’s attempted straw purchase? He won’t get arrested, but at least it’ll drive the point home that he’s a hypocrite.

    • He doesn’t have an anti-gun agenda. He has a pro-money agenda.

Wake up folks. Ex-astronaut isn’t exactly a high paying job.

      • Astronauts are GS-11 thru GS-14 according to NASA. Which is roughly $60K to $130K per year. Better than the average American household, let alone individual, which is fine, it’s a challenging gig.

Depending on how smart you are about ‘working’ your FERS retirement package, even at GS-11 it is always a far better benefit than someone who made the (maximum) SS contribution at a working wage of ~$72K.

But yeah, I don’t disagree, he’s in it for the money/prestige/notariety.

        • 16V, when your wife used to be in the United States House of Representatives, your quoted figures are chump change. All those “campaign contributions” and PAC money are gone.

    • I dont know about anywhere else but in my area they really are not hard to find. You’ll be paying some money but they are around. Magazines and ammo on the other hand, thats a different story.

  6. Mark Kelly refused to answer this question I asked him “Why is it a “self defense” weapon in the hands of police who are defending themselves against common street criminals but a “Assault weapon” in my hands as I defend my home against those very same street criminals?”

    • Exactly. And if the AR’s only job is really to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible, as the anti-gun people are so fond of claiming, then why would any police department want one anywhere near them?

  7. You gotta remember the brady/grabber ralleying cry is death to….well..us & themselves. There isn’t going to be a lot of good to come out of that mans army, Randy

  8. Now he’s saying this from his facebook, effin’ liar ” Looks like the judiciary committee will vote on background checks next week. I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a 45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes. I don’t have possession yet but I’ll be turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do. Scary to think of people buying guns like these without a background check at a gun show or the Internet. We really need to close the gun show and private seller loop hole.” lol way to back peddle.

    • After months of testimony and MAIG propaganda, America didn’t doubt background checks were fat. That’s computers for ya’. There was nothing to prove and he knew it. What we doubted was how long it takes a given hypocrite to reveal himself. I’ll take the under next time.

    • Does Colorado (or was it AZ) have a waiting period, if he passed, why couldn’t he take his purchases home with him? And this had to be months ago, when even used ARs were readily available and especially “high” as in normal capacity mags!

    • I don’t understand where all of these Internet guns without background checks come from. Every weapon I’ve every purchased online requires a background check when I pick it up. Usually costs 30-40 extra too. All this AWB and background checks will do is piss people. I sure hope the libtards realize that they are going to get A LOT of people killed by pushing this agenda, one way or another.

  9. Ill buy that rifle from him.

I would officially be the biggest kid on the block for owning a prominent anti-gun figurehead’s AR15.

Ooops, maybe not the biggest…Id be smaller than the owner of Dianne Feinstein’s 357 magnum (does she still have that thing i wonder?)

“which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.”

    ???!?!?!?!? *ripping eyeballs out*

you LEGALLY purchased a firearm. What kind of illustration did you hope to paint?

did you commit a felony or violent misdemeanor nobody knows about?

    • He certainly would have made a better point by buying an AR-15 through a private seller at a gun show without a background check. I really don’t understand the point he’s trying to make by buying a rifle from a FFL, which will of course require a background check. That .45 he purchased is much more similar to the weapon that injured his wife than a AR-15 is, will he be turning that over to the police as well?

I really wonder what Difi’s revolver would go for on the collectors market.

      • You wouldn’t make any profit from difi’s revolver. You would have to buy it and then seal it in concrete until you could find an exorcist willing to risk his soul to drive the demons out that any possesion of hers would be filled with. I wonder if you can buy holy water by the 5 gallon jug?

      • “I really wonder what Difi’s revolver would go for on the collectors market.”

I’d be willing to pay a bit of money for it. May sound stupid but hell, its a once in a life time oppurtunity.

What would someone buying a gun off a gun grabber be called? I mean aside from a cartel.

  10. Arizona has instant NICS. You fill out the paperwork, gun shop makes the call and you walk out with the gun. I’ve NEVER heard of any sort of transaction where the NICS call was made an the buyer left without the gun. Doesn’t happen.

I thought those NASA guys were supposed to be smart but trying to buy a gun in Arizona after running your sobbing trap in front of Congress is twelve shades of stupid.

    • Maybe those conspiracy theorists who say Kubrick faked the moon landings are onto something.

They say we can’t get to the moon or much beyond Earth orbit because the radioactivity of the Van Allen belts would kill a human being.

If Mark Kelly is any indication, Astronauts are either paid stooges or he may be suffering from some kind of exposure to cosmic rays, in order to be this stupid.

      • As controlling as Kubrik was he’d never be able to work with the gummint on a film. Although “Droogs On The Moon” could be interesting.

As far as Kelly, he’s a straight up bona fide lying hypocrite – no cosmic rays needed.

    • It may be on a 15 day hold. In Florida, I believe there’s a rule that any gun taken in on a purchase transaction has to be held some period of time (15 or 30 days, it varies by the type of dealer; pawn shops are 30 days, secondhand dealers are 15) before it can be resold. So he can pay for it, do the paperwork on the sale, but can’t take it home yet.

However, unless Arizona has different rules than Florida, he wouldn’t do the NICS check on the AR until the date he took possession, so I think he’s fudging the truth a little. In the Facebook image that’s posted above, he doesn’t actually say he had a NICS check on the AR. He says, “…when I went to buy a .45.” My guess is he’ll have to do another 4473 when he takes delivery of the AR.

    • During December and January, the NICS was so overwhelmed with calls from FFL’s that there ended up being an unintended waiting period. At least that’s how it was in Missouri. My state has a 3 day “Proceed” law where if the NICS doesn’t reply within 3 business days, the FFL has to give you the gun. Most transactions are indeed walk in do paperwork, walk out with gun. I get a 3 day hold occasionally because I was born in a foreign country (Army brat) and that sets off some red flags with NICS. But the weird part is that I have NEVER gotten a hold when purchasing lower receivers, only handguns.

  11. I hope the NRA and Mr. Colin Nior have a field day about this. Hopefully Foxnews splashes it on their home page as well. This needs A LOT of press because you know the MSM will not carry it.

    • A “used” AR. Obviously someone bought 2 when they were $800 and sold one of them for $2000.

  12. Seriously? He bought a rifle just to turn it into the police? Why would you turn a rifle from a store called “Diamondback Police Supply” into the cops? I think they can go there and buy their own at a discount. His BS explanation doesn’t even make sense and if the pinko liberals had any integrity they would call him on it.

This is so completely hypocritical, it makes me wonder about his wife. I’m not going to say any more than that, but I think you all know what I’m getting at. To hell with these liars!

    • “… if the pinko liberals had any integrity they would call him on it.”

Not that I am rooting for the other team but it would bennefit them to cast out anyone that may hurt their image. Indirectly it would help our cause because it would only decrease their numbers.

    • I (and all my firearms) am what most of you here would call a liberal (I’m not, really, but FoxNews has convinced so many people that centrists are liberals that it’s not even worth arguing about), and I will call him on it loudly.

Dude totally got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

All his research in to firearms probably got him thinking about how much fun they can be.

  13. It’s ok Mark…..you don’t have to turn the gun in. It won’t hurt you and in your hands it probably won’t hurt anyone…….see…..thats how it works

  14. Reminds me of when PETA was discovered to have purchased a huge refrigerator to store dead puppies in. I hope he picks the thing up, takes it to the range and realizes what an idiotic idea restricting these things is.

  15. I am more concerned about the possibility his wife, who has medically related mental issues, may have access to his weapons. According to those against guns, it should not be allowed to be in the same household as a mentally compromised individual. Maybe his rights should be suspended until she is given a medical “all clear”. I am sure 1.) a doctor would be willing to legally link his name against any future wrongdoing and 2.) the bureaucratic system will reflect that information immediately right?

    • In California she would be on a prohibited persons list and the gun confiscation crew would be showing up to collect his or her guns. Ooops except that he is part of the elite and would get a pass.

  16. “Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an “assault weapon,” he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.”
That’s the sort of excuse pedophiles make when child pornography is found on their computers.

  17. A psychological evaluation is in order. Since AR15s are weapons of war, clearly Kelly is suffering from some PTSD from his time in NASA.After all, if we can’t trust our vets to be armed, former astronauts have no earthly business owning an assault weapon.

Heres a thought-can someone from TTAG in the mental health field arbitrarily declare this guy psychologically unfit sight unseen?

  18. which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

…Because we’re supposed to be shocked and alarmed that a navy veteran and freaking former astronaut is able to buy a rifle?

Does he have a felony on his record that we don’t know about? Is he secretly a drug addict? Has he ever been found mentally incompetent? *

*Ok, I have to admit those last two wouldn’t surprise me overmuch.

  19. wonder if his wife can muster up the ability to read the stock answer he crafts on the paper in front of her

  20. This is just sad on so many levels, from what happened to his wife and ergo him, to the pathetic hypocrisy he is now generating. I can only speculate this is some attempt to come to grips with the tragedy that befell his family and assign blame to someone or something. Unfortunately, life is not always fair and the entity which you want to assign blame is not always the true culprit; i.e. the Second Amendment versus maybe people who knew Jared Loughner was scary dangerous and did nothing.

  21. There aren’t that many gun stores in Tuscon, so the precise details will come out. Feinstein buys a .357. Kelly buys an AR and a 1911. But everyone else is nuts? What am I missing? “Please, please make these illegal before I…please…before I…buy one. I can’t help myself!” I personally will take this opportunity to invite Mark to come out of the closet and join the NRA. It’s OK, Mark. We understand. You were against them before you were for them. It happens. Fess up, then live free. It’s your Come to Jesus moment.

  22. Kelly told us he has problems controlling his impulses. Doesn’t this constitute a mental disorder and isn’t that mental disorder compounded by Kelly telling everyone that can read that he has trouble controlling his impulses.

    • Good point. He has a mental disorder and “weapons of war,” he needs to be placed on the terrorist watch list.

Oh whats that Mr. Kelly? Its not so funny when youre being accused of being a crimminal when youre not, is it?

  23. Pick one:

    1. There is nothing wrong with firearms, you see that now, and now you want one.
    2. You “impulse bought” something that has but one purpose: “to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible.” You are a dangerous nutcase.

    Choose carefully.

  24. What’s the big deal about former astronauts that makes them experts on every subject? I mean, what, being a rocket payload makes you a rocket scientist?

  25. Straw purchase? So if Mark Kelly bought the AR15 with the intent of giving it to the Tuscon police doesn’t that qualify as a straw purchase and isn’t that illegal?

  26. The couple are just liberal jerks who thinks laws dont apply to them just the masses they rule. too bad the gun shop owner didn’t deny the sale and spit in Kelly’s face.

  27. Do as I say not as I do. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.

America needs an enema badly. Either bust this country up into two countries: One for people who value the traditional American way of life of self sufficiency and our inalienable rights, and one for the collectivist trash, or there WILL be an all out war in the future. There is no other solution. People like me will never bow to these collectivist jerks, and people like them will never leave people like me alone as long as we are under the same roof. They will never be satisfied as long as anything remains of what was America in the cities and neighborhoods in which they live.

  28. Kelly is a typical elitist & hypocrite scum. Not to mention a swarmy opportunist using his wife’s circumstance to line his pockets and further his future in progressive circles.

  29. Naming this guy a hypocrite, doesn’t begin to cut it. The only word that i think comes close to describe this two faced liar is tartouffe.

  30. Actually, Mark went public about the purchase, with pics, on his own page PRIOR to the lying d-bags at Breitbart even knowing about it as part of his ongoing campaign for tougher gun laws.

      • Wait. The blog post says,

Only after the purchase was discovered did Mark Kelly post on his Facebook indicating that the AR-15 purchase was an impulse buy, and that he would be turning it over to the Tuscon PD as soon as he got it from the gun store.

But RF seems to agree that Mark Kelly

went public about the purchase, with pics, on his own page PRIOR to the lying d-bags at Breitbart even knowing about it

So which is it? Was the guy outed, then he came up with the excuse (“I’m giving it to the PD”)? Or did he publicly acknowledge he purchased the gun, before anyone else knew?

    • I don’t think the main story is about him trying to keep it secret. Obviously, it was done for publicity. However, that doesn’t change the fact that.

      1. His purchase was a “straw purchase” since he didn’t intend to be the end-user of the rifle and he didn’t have license to purchase on behalf of the Police. If he stated otherwise on the ATF forms he committed a crime.

      2. His purchase doesn’t illustrate the “loopholes” he has been railing against. Buying a rifle after successfully passing a background check by a federal dealer is a far cry from driving across state lines and getting one from a guy in a parking lot.

  31. Whats the main reason of the AriZona ShooTing? Judge John Roll overturned ObaAmmma executive order 14 days before his death, do your own research. This FaccsSit Looneey tune groups in the CaapTital HHilll are allll lliiiaaarrrrs runnning aammmuuucccckkkkkk!

  32. I’ll bet this guy is so bright he’ll take the 30 round magazine to DC and show everyone like another super intelligent reporter we all know. I love these ignorant, arrogant, super smart morons. Or do they think at all?
