“A small community in northern Saskatchewan is in mourning after shootings at two locations — including a school — left four people dead,” cbc.ca reports. “Several others were wounded in the violence Friday in La Loche, Sask., a Dene community nestled on the shores of Lac La Loche with a population of about 3,000.” Police arrested a suspect — reported to be a student who texted “Just killed 2 ppl. Bout to shoot ip the school”–  but not immediately . . .

RCMP in Saskatchewan said they were called about “an active shooter” at 1 p.m. CST and said they had a suspect in custody 45 minutes later.

When seconds count, the police may take 45 minutes to apprehend the killer. If it had been multiple attackers, as we’ve seen in school attacks in Pakistan, the death toll can be horrendous. Make that more horrendous.

The incident, in a country with “strict” gun control, [once again] puts paid to President’s Obama’s post-Paris pronouncement that “This just doesn’t happen in other countries.” Here’s a list of previous Canadian school shootings [via thestarphoenix.com]

Ecole Polytechnique, Montreal: On Dec. 6, 1989, 25-year-old Marc Lepine shot more than two dozen people, killing 14 women before killing himself.

•••

Dawson College, Laval, Que: On Sept. 13, 2006, 18-year-old Anastasia De Sousa was killed and 20 others were hurt when gunman Kimveer Gill, 25, opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon. Gill was killed in a police gunfight.

•••

W.C. Jeffreys Collegiate Institute, Toronto: On May, 23, 2007, 15-year-old Jordan Manners is found in a hallway with single gunshot wound to the chest. He later dies in hospital. Two teens were charged with first-degree-murder and were later acquitted.

•••

Les Racines de vie Montessori, Gatineau, Que.: On April 5, 2013, two men die during a shooting at the school’s daycare. The shooter is identified as Robert Charron. Thirty-eight-year-old Neil Galliou is killed before Charron takes his own life. Charron told staff to take the 53 children to safety before he opened fire.

•••

W.R. Myers High: Taber, Alta.: On April 28, 1999, a 14-year-old Grade 9 students shoots three students, killing 17-year-old Jason Lang before he is arrested.

  1. Well, according to the antis, that doesn’t count as a mass shooting. The guy used a bolt gun from what I read. The antis only count it if it was an evil “assault rifle” with the 30 clip shoulder thingy that goes up. /sarc

    Praying for the victims.

    • “The guy used a bolt gun from what I read.”

      A bolt gun?

Like a ‘No Country For Old Men’ Anton Chigurh character bolt gun?

      Egad.

I will say this, though – No Country turned me into an instant Cormac MacCarthy fan.

And an instant Javier Bardem fan…

    • “This type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency.” — Barack Obama

    • Witnesses are reporting a shotgun, but it’s still pretty early going. The RCMP are notoriously tight-lipped about crimes, so it can be hard to find out what really happened. We do know, however, that he is being charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm.

  2. I’m not down playing the situation at all, but I would imagine a 45 min, even 30 min response time would warrant more dead/injured. Luckily it seems, this person was not trained at all, or inherited any marksmanship skills whatsoever and it kept the death toll low. It makes me angry that people take this route to solve their problems, whatever those problems may be.

Crazy is crazy, but I believe wholeheartedly that bad parenting is a majority cause for these events.

  3. The US media didn’t even cover it because it was only a school for Native Americans/First Nation folks. The US Media’s white cloak and hood is showing a little here.

    • The U.S. Media is a very broad term. I saw it on the 6:00 news last night. Maybe some didn’t cover it because it was Canadian or because they had other things to talk about. But some Americans heard about it.

    • My mother is from Saskatchewan so when I saw the story and it said small community I new it was First Nation. It was probably an honor based event. First Nation/Native American culture has a violent streak.

      • Now that cannot be true.

We all know that native Americans lived happy, peaceful prosperous lives in harmony with nature until Christopher Columbus came over here and killed them all personally.

  4. These things don’t happen in other civilized nations, right? Especially not ones like France and Canada, right?

My prayers go out to the victims, and those closest to the shooter that will have to live with what someone so close to them did…

  5. You see this happened because of guns. No, it can’t possibly be because of mental illness, or because of early childhood neglect or abuse. It happened because guns exist and we need to deal with the problem of guns.

    • No, it happened because lax gun laws in other countries (US). You know, just like NY, Chicago, DC’s murder rates being high because lax gun laws in other states. Is just common sense, right?
      /sarcasm off

    • I own many guns and not one of them ever, on their own, came alive and started murdering people. Only psychotic people determined to hurt and kill others murder people. Leave me and my guns alone. I promise they will never hurt anyone that does not deserve to be hurt.

    • Most likely it is because of, like most things, nothing. There are 5+ billion people on the planet. They all do all kinds of random shit. Occasionally, that random shit is shoot someone. Very few things that happen in complex systems, has a clearly discernible “cause.” Pretending it does, just feed the flames of ambulance chasers, legislators and others too unintelligent to comprehend the world is inherently probabilistic, not deterministic.

  6. But….but…the liberals all say that shootings do not happen with the same frequency as in the USA. Seee…..the gun control laws really do work super swell!
Of course Canada does not have the quantity of urban gang bangers or population in general that the USA does, which might explain the lower frequency.

  7. But I’m sure they “felt safe” up until the point they were killed… and isn’t that what’s important?

    No. No it is not.

    • I pray for the victims and their families. I also own multiple guns and large amounts of ammo in order to protect myself from the likes of them. There are over 300,000,000 guns in America and because of that, criminals will be able to acquire the guns they want to hurt others. I on the other hand will always have the ability to protect myself from them.

  8. How long before the “tribal community”/newly elected prime minister bieber/leftist media blames the oppressive policies of “evil whitey” for this? Welfare addiction, paint huffing and the proliferation of bastardised pseudo-gangster “culture” among the younger people on these reserves will conveniently be ignored/glossed over….

  9. Yeah very little on the lame-stream media. Maybe spun as evil white people oppressing the noble natives. Gee I have some native Canadian in my background. My dad told me a great great grandpa just took a squaw in the 1830’s…

  10. IMHO, this was not a news event because the snow makes better clicks and all the major news stations are reporting that Bloomberg is about to announce he is running for POTUS.

If it was a slower news cycle, it would have been front and center. While the media is all about the narrative, they love things that sell more commercials a whole lot better.

  11. This is bad news for all law-abiding Canadian gun owners. There is very little the average person can do about situations like this, especially when they happen on a northern reserve. Unfortunately, it is a lot easier to further disarm ordinary gun owners than it is to fix the giant mess that is the reserve system. It also scores cheap political points, so we all know what’s coming next.

  12. What has me worried about this Canadian tragedy is if the Canadian government passes MORE gun laws in the next few weeks because of this event, we’ll hear it loud from the antis.

“See American, that’s how it’s done………..” said every liberal everywhere.

  13. Just playground devils advocate, but isn’t your post “waving the bloody shirt” on the flip side of the coin? Isn’t this the exact same thing you tear the other side apart for?

  14. The fundamental problem that cannot be resolved between us and those that truly believe in gun control, is that, they believe in “less guns, less deaths”, and they try to remove guns to reduce the total risk while leaving good people defenseless, for a perceived net decrease in loss of life. While we, suppose the notion “less guns less deaths” even held true, accept a higher total risk but want means to cope with it, leading to a better outcome as individuals.
But the thing is “less guns less deaths” is BS, iirc.
Conclusion: we’re on the right side. They need more education.
