Today, Bryan from South Carolina sends his knife-laden “Everyday Carry” ensemble, via (coincidentally enough) Everyday Carry.

He writes this of his daily gear:

These are a few items I keep on my person at all timea, some may think it’s touch but to much is never enough when in a bad situation.

Thanks for all you do for the EDC community I enjoy watching all your videos and my wallet not so much!

The one love/hate relationship I have with these is I catch it from every direction as I riff on these set ups.  Just a day or three ago, several people complained that they felt like “The Truth About Knives.”  Well, brace yourself, Bryan carries quite a few.  Four specifically.  Including three pretty substantial folders.

And a Gen 4 GLOCK 26.  With an unspecified 20-round magazine chock full of…  ball ammo?  And a (“affordable”) nylon mag pouch with two additional mags loaded with who knows what.

Bryan, not sure what your secret occupation is, but you can just about stuff ANY hollow point and get better, safer performance for stopping anything short of an elephant with the sort of penetration ball ammo provides.  Not only that, Bryan, but you endanger innocents beyond the bad guy you’re shooting at if you use 9mm ball ammo.

  1. Ball ammo = baaaaaaaaad

Greatly reduced stopping power compared to hollow point.
Greatly increased change of shoot throughs compared to hollow point.

    • Overpenetration is literally not a concern. Statistically the majority of your shots are going to miss. You’re saying the shots that miss and retain all of their energy are less dangerous than those that may pass through and lose at least part of their energy.

      • Over penetration is most definitely a concern. The FMJ shots that miss the target are more likely to pass through drywall or other media, thus posing more of a threat to bystanders.

      • Given your statement, a fmj that misses the target is highly likely to hit a bystander, shoot through and hit a 2nd bystander

      • In Ohio, if it’s a justified shoot, neither your assailant nor his mutant family can collect a penny. Get a through and through, and shoot a bystander and they OWN you.

There is literally NO benefit to me for NOT carrying JHPs. EVERY semi-auto handgun I carry is at least as reliable with them as FMJs. A 147gr. .355 JHP may not expand, but it for damned sure won’t shrink.

I’m not in the NYPD. I don’t have a union backing me to the hilt. I don’t have a bottomless pot of other people’s money. I actually have to care whether I hit the right person and ONLY the right person.

    • Statistics have it that 9 out of ten defensive shooters either wet, soil themselves or vomit during or immediately following a gun fight and 6 out of 7 rounds fired miss the intended target completely with the one that hits, hits outside of the center of mass. A flesh wound hahaha.
So my question is where is the diaper and what’s the big deal about over penetration when the real concern is the path of the missed shots. If you know your target and what is beyond, its the missed shots that are the real danger.

    • Ball ammo is better than FOUR knives. None of these knives are any good for throwing. None of us have more than two hands. Is this some kind of joke? Will that small mag even fit into the pistol?
Bryan seems about as smart as a muskrat.

      • Will that small mag even fit into the pistol?

Yes, that’s the stock 10 rd. magazine that comes with the G 26.

  2. The thing the other day was not the EDC talking about his knives as much you talking about yours. And his electronics. Anyway, except for ammo and holster selection solid carry.

    • It’s great on the battlefield where hitting somebody behind your immediate assailant is a bonus and you can’t be sued or prosecuted for it.

      • The military isn’t quite impressed with it either, which is why, (as of last I read on this site) the military is finally adopting JHP for its pistols.

        • The military will continue to issue ball ammo to the majority of the troops. Winchester just won the contract to supply ammunition to them. They are supplying 115 ball ammo and “special purpose” 147 grain hollow point ammo. Which implies maybe the hollow points will be used for special operations? Who knows?

        • It doesn’t make financial sense for the military to use JHP at the range. Stateside LE seems about the only folks who do that…

        • I thought expanding or frangible ammunition is outlawed for war fare use? Hence the fmj for all small arms.

        • It is against the Geneva Convention to use expandable ammo in war, does not matter what unit.

        • The expanding ammo thing is in Hague convention, not Geneva, and the US never ratified The Hague. The military only abides by it because our allies do. We’re not actually bound to it at all.

    • 9mm FMJ that functions and hits to POA been is better than someone who buys just a couple hyped boxes of JHP and doesn’t shoot enough to verify function and POI.

  3. Some states do not allow the use of hollow point ammunition, most notably New Jersey. The poster may live there or in another jurisdiction where JHP are restricted. However, given the 20 round mag, it’s not likely he lives in NJ.

    • That’s where Underwood Ammo with Lehigh Xtreme Defense bullets would work. There’s no HP in the middle but it does more damage and doesn’t over penetrate. Probably flummox those NJ legislators! If Underwood doesn’t work I’d use jacketed or hard cast flatnose bullets.

  4. Hollow points are generally better for these situations. That said, sometimes you run with what you brung. Hits are all that count . Under stress this often degrades, but in the end the focus should be knowing what you have, how it performs down range. ..with the ability to engage, hit and continue function as needed in top priority.

  5. 2 mags of Federal HST(1 inserted, 1 spare), 1 mag of 230gr ball(spare), because you never know when you might need barrier blind ammunition…

        • I don’t either. Just personal preference. And I do like your suggestion for carrying an extra with ball ammo. I have given thought to stepping my spare mag up to 2, and if I did, I think I’d pick up what you are laying down. Thanks man.

    • I do the same thing, mag in the gun and the spare mag have defensive ammo, HST’s or Hornandy Critical Defense (not Duty). If I carry a 3rd mag (2nd spare) it has FMJ and is located away from the 1st spare mag. This is for my S&W Shield and Glock 19.

  6. I understand carrying more than one knife. I do so on occasion myself. But I carry knives that are different types and blade shapes and sizes.

3 of those knives look so close in size and blade that …why?

    • I’m going to take a wild guess that one knife is located at the typical right hand pocket, 2nd on the leftside pocket for left hand draw and the 3rd in a boot/cargo-pocket/backpack/back-pocket?

  7. That Chris Reeve Sebenza with Insingo blade is one of the most useful knives you will find. Very durable steel and holds an unbelievable edge.

    • As opposed to any other folding knife…??? ALL knives can be useful when used correctly…OR are they more useful because they have a fancy name attached to them…??? Oh wait, it must the fancy price tag…

      • Probably not any more useful. Definitely more durable. And if longevity and lower maintenance is a factor, maybe they are more useful after all.
Also, there is something to be said for initial quality, workmanship, and materials. For me, it is also pride of ownership, but that is getting off subject and, yes, it does border on snobbery. Mea culpa.

  8. Ball ammo: idiot
    4 similar folding knives: idiot
20rd mag on a subcompact: idiot
    Nylon holster: idiot
Sigh. This man is just an idiot.

  9. This has got to be a joke lol, there is a real possibility this guy is just trolling. 4 knives, fmj’s and nylon holsters….

  10. I had to put down a horse this morning. FMJ is the only round that will work. Frangible and JHP will only stun. But people are squishy and soft so JHP or frangible is a better `round.
Anyone have info on AUX ammo?

  11. @cloudbuster I have stories from pro outfitters re. JHP/frangible. I think you might have gotten lucky. Too many times I hear about only about stunning or more shots needed. But then no one remembers what ammo they put in “a while ago”. As you know shot placement is a MUST. I do know that a 9mm or .380 Blazer FMJ at less than 3′ will always work. No unnecessary suffering. Not scientific, just my opinion.

  12. Three of his four knives (the Strider SNG, CRK Sebenza, and Hinderer XM-18) cost nearly as much as his gun, and he could sell the fourth knife to get a half-decent holster, mag pouch, and maybe have a little left for decent ammo. This is one of those funny rigs where there’s a lot of expensive stuff and then one or two clear things where you can tell the owner cheaped out.
