So much for blue guns. FN’s out with a red trainer for their excellent FN 509 pistol. It mimics a fully functional 509 in every way — size, ergonomics, manual of arms — except for, you know, firing. Here’s their press release:

(McLean, VA) FN America, LLC is pleased to announce the release of an FN 509® Training Pistol, an inert pistol that provides law enforcement agencies and instructors a completely safe way to demonstrate the pistol’s functionality in a classroom or range setting. In addition, the pistol provides a way to acclimate new shooters to safe firearm handling, presentation and holstering before they move to a live firearm.

“TheFN 509 Training Pistol is an integral addition to our line-up that has been specifically produced for law enforcement agencies,” said Charles “Bucky” Mills, senior director of law enforcement sales for FN America, LLC. “This positions FN to be responsive to all solicitations and further support agencies invested in the FN 509 platform.”

The FN 509 Training Pistol is a completely inert, red-framed polymer pistol with a redesigned fire control assembly that resets the trigger each time it is pulled without having to continually rack the slide. The FN 509 Training model shares the same ergonomic features as the functional FN 509, including grip angle and textures; slide weight and profile; four-inch barrel; and operating controls. The pistol also ships with fixed day sights, three 17-round magazines in a red soft case. Agencies or ranges interested in the FN 509 Training Pistol should email inquiries to [email protected].

  1. I don’t get it. Why not use the real thing minus ammo? Ok the trigger resets without racking the slide. Is that how you really want to train people who may use this weapon in a real life defensive situation?

    • Because people have been killed using an “unloaded” pistol in this exact situation by either failing to properly clear the weapon or reloading after the drill but then doing “one more quick exercise” .

  2. Thank G-d that it’s [apparently] restricted to police. Could you imagine the horrors that could be perpetrated if regular citizens got ahold of these?

    • What sucks as a police firearms instructor is that when we get substandard recruits, they end up being pushed through even if they are failing due to lackluster recruitment numbers. I have written up manuscripts about why a recruit sucks and who should be terminated for being a liability, but the upper echelon rolls the dice that they won’t be involved in a firefight.

It sucks, its aggravating, and as I am not the head firearms instructor I don’t really have much say in the matter ( and honestly neither does he). I’ve dropped an anonymous tip to the news but it didn’t go anywhere. It is frustrating.

  3. Most cops do dream of being Firemen. Or to qualified to become one. Fire engine red toy gun as closed as most could come.

  4. Other than dummy Blue guns, I’m against these fake training firearms.
It gets people used to “not going to fire” mentality while in training.
Teach them with real guns with primer blanks. Enough to hurt people if done incorrectly, but not to kill.
People will have to learn to respect the thing before they get handed live ammo.
Fake firearm is not the way to learn respect.

    • I am a PD firearms instructor and we have a Glock “Red Gun.” Those learning to shoot never handle the red gun, it is used by instructors for demonstration purposes so that we KNOW for a fact the gun will not fire. This enables us to be a bit more flexible with our positioning, being able to be viewed from the side so recruits can observe weapons manipulation.

As for your primer idea, we have found that a prompt administration of verbal admonition during the dry fire phase has been sufficient to correct any lapse in safety before we get to live rounds.
