“The NYPD tells TMZ, Mateen has no association with the department, and that the shirts he was photographed in were unofficial garments that could be purchased at any store.

“Mateen’s father told NBC News, ‘This has nothing to do with religion.’ He says his son became angry after seeing two men kissing a few months ago in Miami, and he speculates that could have triggered his decision to kill.”

  1. “He says his son became angry after seeing two men kissing a few months ago in Miami, and he speculates that could have triggered his decision to kill.”

The same thinking that leads to the requirement that their women be completely covered, for fear that the sight of a well-turned ankle will cause uncontrollable impure thoughts for which the innocent man can bear no responsibility.

  2. He we go again…. This is where we say “SEE ALL YOUR STUPID LAWS DID NOTHING!” and then they say… “IF ONLY WE HAD MORE LAWS WE COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS!” Too bad laws don’t stop crazy people though, they just stop normal people.

  3. So per the previous article, some people in his religion call for murdering gay people. So he goes out and murders a bunch of gay people. How does that have “nothing to do with religion”?

    • It is a matter of interpretation.

Islam, the religion does not say anything about killing gays or gays in general.
Islamic Law on the other hand considers it a sin and has specific punishments.

Orthodox Islam is not only a system of beliefs, but also a legal system.

The two get conflated. From the perspective of the father being asked and taking a literal interpretation, no it was not the religion however, it is in Orthodox Islam the law. So, the best you can say is, he was a vigilante to Islamic Law.

Those of us who are not Islamic, conflate the two. Some of these people take Islam as extremely literal.

None of this is to justify what was done, but just explain why the father answered as he did. Western reporters should have better follow up questions, but we/they assume a different interpretation.

The issue is you have 1000+ year old religion that has never had a reformation movement like pretty much all the other religions and since Islamic Law and Islamic Religion can be easily conflated, the shooter could have easily intercepted as the two as being one because that is what Orthodox Islam is all about.

There is a long form piece at the Atlantic that does a damn good job of explaining how things get twisted on purpose.

      • Um… Are you high? Islam most certainly calls for killing gays. It’s a direct commandment from Mo-ham-head the kiddy didler.

        • Fun fact: why do Islamic Terrorist cut people’s heads off – because Mohammad cut people’s heads off – to be more like Mohammad.

          Region of peace, indeed.

        • Yes, mostly true.

This is why I’m exhorting people to read up on Islam. They’ve documented quite well what they believe. The reasons why they like lopping off heads, and why they looooove to target Jews… it’s all in their history, esp. in the Sira. In the Sira and Hadiths, it is recounted how Muhammad comported himself at “The Battle of the Trench,” or the siege of Medina. The Islamic sources lay out how a Jewish tribe who had been part of the Arabian forces marching on Muhammad lost and were subjected to horrible retribution.

In the Battle of the Trench, we see the prototype for how ISIS operates today. In the Battle of the Trench, we see the Islamic animus towards Jews cemented into the nature of Islam, we see how women who are not Muslims are treated as war booty and sold into sex slavery, we see how Muslims prefer to fight from weakness, not strength.

Read up on it. Sources abound. There’s no excuse for ignorance.

      • ” A matter of interpretation”? Umm, no. It’s all very clear in the Koran, The Hadith and by the actions of Muhammad.

Muslims are commanded to kill gays, among other violations, like those muslims that convert to another religion, or become an athiest.

But to find out the truth, one would need to read the Koran, the Hadith and the biography of Muhammad’s life, which for many people, is just to much work.

        • The Quran and Hadith are different.

Quran is considered to be the word of God and is actual recitation of God where he revealed the text to the prophet for a long time period of 22 years. Hadith hold importance for interpretation of Islamic jurisprudence — something that is followed by Orthodox Muslims. The Hadith is a interpretation of the Quran. While the Quran may not explicitly say anything about gays, the Hadith by interpretation could make shit up just like our politicians do when talking about “shall not be infringed” — Taking an 2nd example, the founders had written “shall not be infringed” but courts have interpreted that to mean, nope, government can infringe all day long. Who is correct?

Nothing in the Quran says go kill LGBT, the hadith consider homosexual acts a punishable crime and a sin per their interpretation although there was nothing explicit in the Quran. History says there were plenty of gay Muslim poets and themes in their literature and in some cases they thought gay prostitution was just fine.

To put a gun spin on this, Orthodox Muslims would interpret “shall not be infringed” as exactly that if stated in the hadith regardless if nothing was in Quran. There is no room for anything else no wiggle room for anything else even if means cutting off someone’s head.

There are several problems with the Hadith’s. First, the first one written was 100yrs+ after Muhammad and there are at least 4 different major interpretations: Sunni, Shi’a, Ibadi and Ahmadiyya but there are more. The religion is based on the Quran the problem is the Islamic Religious Law has many interpretations with Hadith. You have separate the two.

My point being, the reporter should have asked which Islamic Law or Hadith did the family follow and then you would have had a better answer than simply “religion”

        • Sorry, I must have missed the “KILL THE GAYS AND THE JEWS AND THE EVERYONE ELSE” lectures during my 2 years and counting as a Muslim. And yes, my mosque is filled with Iranians, Iraqis, and Afghans. No idea how I survived, or missed all the endless hate lectures in between the peaceful prayers, celebrations, lectures, community discussions, and dinners. It always warms my heart to see people taking freedom of religion nowhere near as seriously as RKBA.

The shooter was not even practicing. A lot of terrorists barely understand their religion, and many became radicalized after a long period of ignoring their faith — in the quest to make up for lost time, they jump in to become as hardcore as possible, cue them joining up with the lunatic fringe. From the report and the photographs, he doesn’t even look like someone trying to be an Islamist. He seems so much more like a hateful piece of work who just wanted to cause some suffering. He’d already been a wife beater and had been investigated in relationship to a guy who actually did become a Daeshbag and blow himself up.

To illustrate how people misuse their faith for evil, imagine taking a book on defensive gun usage, purposefully ignoring all the parts that tell you to avoid fights, deescalate, use reason, etc, and then highlight all the passages telling you to use effective lethal force, and then deciding that was what the book was all about and then going on a killing spree in accordance with what you claim the book told you to do. The misuse of the Quran for violence is exactly like that — ignore all the verses about peaceful and equitable dealings, ignore everything about pacts and peace, ignore everything about showing mercy, ignore things like laws of war and honoring surrender, and not killing non-threats, and instead just take all the verses telling you to fight hard and well when you have to fight. The verses exhorting mercy and peace and fairness outnumber the ones telling people to fight. Danger and unpleasantness are inseparable from the world of men; that a religious book would not teach men how to deal justly with them is an absurd idea.

      • As a practicing Muslim, I thank you for your words and your breakdown of Islam versus Islamism, essentially. I don’t like Islamism, but I love Islam. I am glad to see voices of reason here; ’tis a nice break from the hordes yelling “remove kebab”.

  4. CBS News just reported that were told by a Congressman that his sources revealed that the terrorist made a “pledge of allegiance” to the Islamic State.

No nothing to do with religion at all. /sarc

  5. Can anyone for FL educate me what is so special about a Class “G” License this person obtained? I know from google-fu it is a Armed Security Guard License but reading the training and requirements my reaction is “meh!”

From my search, nothing special but the MSM has latched onto it like it has some special powers.

    • My question too Pascal. Does it mean he could carry in so-called GFZ’s??? Sorry Akbar-your “religion” does call for killing infidels-and happy folk are EZ targets…

  6. Not about religion? Bullshit!

Not about religion? Right, now we have heard from another member of the religion of peace.
We will have peace from the Muslim world when all the gays are dead and all women are forced to go around draped in sack cloth and we have all been forced to convert or been murdered. That is the Muslim definition of peace.

    • I disagree. Even Muslims who do all those things kill each other because they follow different sects of Islam.

  7. As always, bare bones truth… a man made a decision to commit an act of violence. Islam isn’t to blame. Guns are not to blame. A man made a decision to kill based on a radical ideology. “They” aren’t like me, “they” are lesser creatures, “they” need to pay. “They” can be gay, Jewish, Muslim, gun owners, Americans, or anybody. Never forget YOU are someones “THEY.”

  8. What a coup for liberals, ” this has nothing to do with Islam “, soooooooo it’s ALL about the evil assault weapons……….Gotta blame something, as opposed to someone. For the children ™ .

  9. I for one believe it was all about his religion, but hey I’m a nobody.
By the way, this asshole’s face and name don’t your help to become famous. Please just refer to him as “The Orlando Coward” or maybe just “the chickenshit asshole”.

  10. According to the other article “Muslim Cleric calls for gays to be killed” was back in April, so this guy had plenty of time to prepare for an attack, and could have built a full-auto AK in his garage with a parts kit if he so pleased, or gotten some buddies and suicide-bombed the place. Banning “salt waffles” ain’t gonna do jackshit.

  11. If you remember well enough that your son became angry at seeing two men kissing from a few months ago, angry enough to postulate that as the motivation to murder 50 people, I’d be willing to wager that you know more than you’re letting on, and that there have been plenty of red flags to tell you something wasn’t right. Unless of course you actually support the murder of homosexuals.

  12. It still could not be about relegion. Maybe he “just” hated gays. Those peope exist too, you only have to look on a few articles around the web.

  13. I was cool with not seeing this shitbag’s mug since I havent watched TV yet today but since I cant unsee things, thanks TTAG 😐

This folks, imho is a pretty damn good example of Taqiyya (wheres Dyspeptic when you need him for some fun facts). This was obviously a pre-meditated act and the fact that this dude was already “on the radar” for some alphabet agencies just puts the cherry on top. Religion of peace strikes again indeed.

  14. Why would a man from a culture where it’s normal to be a gay pedophile until marriage become enaraged at seeing two men kiss? If this guy had any means at all, he’s probably been kissing boys for years.

    Immigration control, not gun control.

    • The word is PEDERAST. A word the queers suppress as part of their recruiting.

PEDERAST is NOT same as pedophilia. Degree of evil certainly, but a higher degree of a degenerate.

  15. When a Muslim does something despicable, it has nothing to do with religion.

When a Christian does something despicable, it’s the religion.

    Got it.

    • The libs will have to blame guns because they can’t blame Muslims, and they can’t say that gay people triggered him.

  16. So we can’t demonize an entire religion because of a few ‘extremists,’ but it’s ok to demonize the entire gun community for the actions of a few ‘extremists’

  17. Bull fvckin sh%t

Seeing two men kissing caused the killing?

You bet the guy saw A LOT more than that through his life

The parents are just disavowing their little jihadi operator so they can stage another attack next week

  18. I am still trying to reconcile how Muzrats think it is okay to kill homosexuals but then turn around and pork the little Bacha bazis.
Bacha bāzī (Persian: بچه بازی‎‎, literally “boy play”; from بچه bacha, “child”, and بازی bāzī, “game”) is a slang term in Afghanistan for a wide variety of activities that involve child sexual abuse and pederasty.

  19. Look at his eyes. Those eyes are offset at different heights on his face. Just like Alfred E. Neuman’s. No wonder he was bat shit crazy!

  20. Sorry, I must have missed the “KILL THE GAYS AND THE JEWS AND THE EVERYONE ELSE” lectures during my 2 years and counting as a Muslim. • Your approach is admirable, but you fight an uphill battle:
      – the meccan vs medinan verses and their abrogation
      – Muhammad and all his deeds as the best conduct to follow
      – bad, really bad stuff written in the scriptures about the unbelievers, especially so called “idolaters”
      – no big central authority on some agreed interpretation (like catholic church)
      – not even any recognized big peaceful islamic group (the closest thing to that is the Ahmadiyya being considered heretic)

But I am definitely glad that you chose the good part of the islam (and hope you stick to it).
