By the standards of today’s anti-gun zealots, Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) seems at first glance to be aiming rather low with H.R. 1263, which seeks to add to the National Firearms Act any “semiautomatic rifle or shotgun that has the capacity to accept a detachable [magazine].”
Oh, don’t get us wrong. No reasonable, freedom-loving person would try to impose such a preposterous, constitutionally-suspect burden on such a large swath of America’s firearm owners.
But unless you’re actually proposing to ban and confiscate guns, and maybe even to nuke resisters, you’re hardly at the vanguard of contemporary Democrat firearm prohibitionists.
Only last year, Deutch himself was co-sponsoring legislation to ban America’s most popular centerfire rifles.
And even now, he’s trying to ban and encourage the surrender of the types of magazines that are standard equipment on the firearms Americans commonly use to protect themselves and their homes.
So what gives? Is Ted going soft on his hatred for firearms?
Not really.
As usual, the devil is in the details.
We all know by now that anti-gun Democrats want to ban AR-15s and other highly popular and extremely common semiautomatic rifles, which is why they generically refer to them as “assault weapons.”
Anti-gunners in fact compete with each other in trying to find the most comically hyperbolic terms to describe these ubiquitous firearms peacefully possessed by millions of law-abiding Americans.
Deutch himself prefers to call them “weapons of war made for the sole business of killing people.”
Heck, “award-winning journalist and … author” Nina Burleigh even tried to one up all gun controllers by tweeting, “Almost every single person I’ve ever heard of with an AR-15 has been a mass murderer.”
But if anti-gun Democrats are so proud of wanting to ban “assault weapons,” why would one of them settle for the lesser step of regulating them under the NFA, in which case they’d still be legal but subject to a $200 tax, federal registration, a de facto waiting period of many months, and reams of red tape?
While the H.R. 1263 takes a lesser step than an outright ban, it also substantially expands the types of firearms affected by the bill. Usually “assault weapons” are legislatively defined as a semiautomatic rifle or shotgun with one or more “military style features” – things like pistol grips, flash hiders, collapsible stocks, etc. – that any serious person understands do not fundamentally change the ballistics, performance, or capacity of gun.
Deutch’s latest bill avoids this by drawing a much brighter line at all semiautomatic rifles and shotguns fed by a detachable magazine.
This is much more sweeping in scope than any “assault weapon” ban currently pending in Congress.
It would include not just centerfire rifles like the AR-15 and AK variants but even the sorts of rimfire .22 and .17 rimfire rifles used for target shooting or hunting small game like rabbits or squirrels or for teaching the fundamentals of marksmanship to Scouts and summer campers. There are tens of millions of these rifles currently in law-abiding hands.
It’s enlightening to see that anti-gun members of Congress, who claim to be focused on reducing “gun violence,” are more concerned with rimfire rifles used for plinking and small game than focusing on why so few criminals who try to buy a gun are actually prosecuted. Perhaps Congressman Deutch has a special affinity for squirrels, rabbits, and woodchucks.

Well Nina….in nearly every arrest I’m aware of involving use of a firearm, the perpetrator was not the legal owner of the firearm and was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Making legal ownership more onerous is probably a fool’s errand and pretty much a dick move…right Nina?
I propose a new “red flag” law.
If someone sees or believes They see signs that any legislator in their state is or may be contemplating violating the Constitution, they can petition to have the aforementioned legislator hung by the neck until said person sees and admits to the error of their ways.

That’s ridiculous. In CA we can still have a 22LR rifle that looks and functions similar to an AR15, and have “evil features”. But how long that will last, who knows? It’s going to get worse for us in CA and NY, before it gets better.

Let’s assume that the 660 million guns number from the previous article is accurate. Let us also assume that only 1/6th of that number are semi-automatic long guns which can accept a detachable ammunition feeding device (which would include en bloc clips and stripper clips as far as I can tell). Does Ted Douché think the ATF wants to deal with the hastle of maintaining a registry of 110 MILLION firearms and their official owners? Even with modern computers, running a SN search would take several minutes and be rife with errors, voids, bugs, compromised data, etc. No cop is going to bother running a SN search for an otherwise law-abiding citizen that might take upwards of 20 minutes to complete.
Nope. Cuff ’em and take them to a private room in the station for a round of good cop and bad cop.

And if they didn’t like the snow anymore that’s one thing, but don’t for a minute you are going to change the culture of half the country with stupid senseless unenforceable laws that have no merit for folks with even the slightest modicum of common sense. Most of us have been carrying legal handguns and rifles for longer than they have been on Gods green earth. Our law enforcement folks feel the same way, and aren’t going to change the way we have been properly raised because a few radical Democrats came to town to elude the weather.

Not really. It’s entirely expected. Part of the game is to kill the “firearms culture” over time, to whittle away the population and make it “not a big deal” to step on the rights of an “extreme minority”.
Part of that is contained in Deutch’s proposal. Take away the primary firearms you would learn to teach kids with.

Perhaps we violate UnAmerican Leftard Marxists natural right of citizenship. They have violated or would violate the Constitution,so why not revoke their citizenship as they would be ineligible to hold office. Time to fight fire with fire.
Over 99% of all firearm homicides and suicides and gun crime in general involve handguns. Even most “mass shootings” are committed with handguns. If any of these hoplophobes were genuinely concerned about people’s lives, they’d first go after the most commonly used tools that kill the most people – Doctors. Then they might have a go at handguns. So why all the effort going after rifles? Because you can’t fight an insurrection with handguns against and enemy armed with rifles. It’s easier to take out a traitorous politician with a rifle than a handgun. And let’s face it – the 2A isn’t really about hunting (it never occurred to the Founders that hunting or sport shooting would need to be a protected right), it’s not even about self defense from random ne’er-do-wells – it’s about a bloody overthrow of our government when the politicians have fucked it up and it can no longer function. A reset, if you will. It keeps the real power truly with the people. Politicians, especially leftists, don’t like that, which is why we have the 2A. It’s time we threw off the unconstitutional infringements they have already betrayed us with, by any means necessary, and the sooner the better.
