According to thehill.com, Rep. Steve Scalise’s injuries sustained during the attack this morning remain very serious. “Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) was said to be in ‘critical condition’ Wednesday afternoon after emergency surgery following a shooting at a congressional baseball practice earlier in the day. MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where the House majority whip is being treated, offered the update in a message posted to Twitter. Scalise’s office had said that he was undergoing surgery after being shot in the hip.”

Some reports indicate that he’s been taken back into surgery, but that hasn’t been confirmed. More as it becomes available.

  1. That’s an awful lot of shots fired for only a handful (thank God!) hits. He also had the advantage of ambush. Guessing he’s a typical ‘resistance’ type of lefty who only discovered guns when he decided a terrorist attack was the way to go.

    • And obviously believed the left-wing anti-gun hype about how deadly “assault weapons” are which is why he believed he didn’t actually have to aim the thing.

    • One of the Congressmen who was there is an Iraq veteran. He said the shooter was using cover and herding the people on the field into one location.

    • I counted 52 rounds, but I might have missed one or two at the end during the handgun mag dump. Extremely poor marksmanship (fortunately) unless he was 500 yards away.

    • Gunshots.. around 65/66 of ’em, from my count.

Not really much visible in the video, though you can see someone (presumably Scalise) lying on the field, occasionally moving.

    • Shaky video through a chain link fence and the sound of gunshots. That’s it.

Notable ending: “That’s one helluva a way to start a fuckin’ morning.”

  2. One can only hope that rep Scalise is able to complete his term of office.
The governor of Louisiana is a Democrat.

    • Scalise is in the House of Representatives not the Senate. The governor can’t replace him per the Constitution therefore the party of the governor is of no concern. The Clerk assumes control of the House seat and directs the staff taking care of constituents’ business but cannot vote. A special election fills the seat.

From what I understand Scalise is no danger of dying or being so incapacitated that he can no longer do his job.

    • Louisiana governor’s party affiliation is irrelevant here. Scalise is a U.S. Representative. By federal law, all vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives must be filled by elections. The governor cannot just appoint someone.

Just as a curiosity, for the U.S. Senate, that would be a different story. The Constitution gives states the authority to fill sudden Senate vacancies. Most do so through governor appointment, although 4 states actually prohibit Senate appointments outright and 3 others allow appointments only under very strict conditions.

The specifics of the rules vary by state, of course. In several states, the Senate appointee must be of the same party as that of the vacating Senator, regardless of the governor’s party affiliation.

  3. I wonder if the protective detail on scene managed to get some hits on him early, perhaps that interfered with his ability to aim more effectively. That was a long long wait for that first siren to arrive. And truth be told it wasn’t that long a response time compared to most areas in America. Something the antis never seem to want to admit.

Sounded like AR with a bit of handgun mixed in but the flurry at the end sounded like additional LE rifles joined in

    • I heard this morning that one of the officers managed to make it to their vehicle where they keep AR carbine(s). NBC had an expert that seemed to know what he was talking about.

  4. Filming is the last thing I would have done in that situation.

And no, I would not have been headed toward that ball field with a truck gun to try and rescue a bunch of politicians, regardless of party affiliation.

    • A softball field and a reasonable person would assume a group of pols or a group of kids?

Bunch of Republicans and NONE were armed??? Antigun laws are not applicable to Congressmen (Art 1 Sec6 Clause 1).

  5. Should have been a DGU!

In my America, when a Socialist nut opens fire on “conservatives”, The conservatives don’t cower in a baseball dugout unarmed. They shoot back!
Every Republican at the field this morning should automatically receive an F rating from the NRA. Wonder why gun rights are the last thing on the Trump agenda? Here’s your sign.
I know it is near impossible to get a carry permit in DC. Not for a Congressman.
    SMH.

    • Even if these guys had carry permits, they were playing baseball, for Pete’s sake. Not really a game that lends itself to playing while strapped.

      • And how many were faceplanted in the dugout within arms reach of their equipment bag.
Come down to GA son. We take care of ourselves. I play men’s league baseball and I am not a political target but I have a God damned Glock 19 in the dugout with me every fucking game!
Walk the walk is all I am saying!

    • This is not DC, it’s Alexandria, Virginia. Open carry is legal. Concealed carry is shall issue. This was not a gun free zone. That said, if you have to go into DC for work, like all of these people do, and especially if you need to go into the highly secured Capitol complex, carry is impossible unless you have a safe place to keep your gun on the west side of the Potomac.

      • Kinda-sorta “not a gun-free zone”:

Ҥ 18.2-287.4. Carrying loaded firearms in public areas prohibited; penalty.
It shall be unlawful for any person to carry a loaded (a) semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol that expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine that will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (b) shotgun with a magazine that will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered on or about his person on any public street, road, alley, sidewalk, public right-of-way, or in any public park or any other place of whatever nature that is open to the public in the Cities of Alexandria, Chesapeake, Fairfax, Falls Church, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, or Virginia Beach or in the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Henrico, Loudoun, or Prince William.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to law-enforcement officers, licensed security guards, military personnel in the performance of their lawful duties, or any person having a valid concealed handgun permit or to any person actually engaged in lawful hunting or lawful recreational shooting activities at an established shooting range or shooting contest. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The exemptions set forth in §§ 18.2-308 and 18.2-308.016 shall apply, mutatis mutandis, to the provisions of this section.

        1991, c. 570; 1992, c. 790; 2003, c. 976; 2004, c. 995; 2005, c. 160; 2007, c. 813; 2016, c. 257.”

  6. I look forward to a “white christian republican” in congress proposing a law making members of congress exempt from all gun carry laws and all gun storage laws, in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Virginia is ok.
I look forward to watching this debate. It would be nice if the proud white lesbian in the Senate, would propose such a law. I don’t foresee that happening.

  7. Don’t people have survival instincts anymore? If I hear rifle shots popping off, I’m not pulling out my phone to record a video. I’m getting the fuck out of there.

  8. At least he had the sense to get down and stay down since he didn’t know where the shots were coming from and wasn’t taking any in or near his position.

  9. 10yrs ago when the was an “emergency” people thought they had DONE something if they call 911 (NO you didn’t DO squat). Today they pull their idiot phone out to video record/get rich. Morons

  10. I guess the dude wanted his 15minutes…and I see the 66year old shooter had a bunch of run ins with the law. Several should’ve landed him in prison. And kept his BS FOID card. Tell me again how the ILL State Po-leece scan all of us peons every day?

  11. Kinda curious why that SUV wasn’t being used to evacuate the area.

Although I get not wanting to leave your friends behind.

  12. The chief of police was proud that they “responded in three minutes”. When you are being shot at, that is a LONG time.

  13. Prayers for Scalise, and for the rest of the people who experienced this horror. And an F.YOU to the grinning anti’s dancing a jig to the sound of gunfire as they mold this into their coffers to further equating THAT MAN with the rest of our American gun community. Ownership does not make us equal. Eventually the media will get the correct make and model of the firearm used in this attack and we will see just how far they tiptoed down the path of ANTI GUN HYSTERIA during their initial coverage.

They reported over 100 rounds, then tonight it was dozens, then they said it was an M4, then an AR15 type, and now they say it was an SKS, BUT he was wearing shorts and a tshirt. So how does a fat guy hide an SKS in his pocket, how does he walk on the field and raise no flags until shots are fired? How does a man with a supposed criminal record get his hands on the offending item? How how how, are asked every time this happens and the media and the anti’s only have one answer; WE are guilty for believing and living the 2nd Amendment. We can come together today as a single American family but tomorrow, a renewed vigor will provide wind for their anti gun sails.
