  1. The Protac light is alright. Nice and slim, fairly light. I have one in my school pack. Decent beam, good brightness and you can set it the way you want, but that’s kind of a pain in the rear.

Personally I’m not a big fan of lights that run on AA or AAA batteries as the Li-Ion versions of these batteries are expensive and generally can’t be purchased in bulk.

    • I guess it depends. Personally, I’m not a huge fan but they do have some advantages I can think of.

As a “weapon” they’re not great but in certain situations you might be able to get them past security check points, such as in a court house, where you can’t have a gun or a knife.

I realized this when I had jury duty a few years ago. A friend had given me a Boker tactical pen and I thought it was kinda dumb and never carried it. Then I realized I was going to go through a magnetometer and have my stuff X-ray inspected. So I put the pen in my pocket. The pen got the x-ray treatment and on the other side the Sheriff’s Deputy asked me what this thing was. I told him it was pen, unscrewed the cap and wrote on the back of my hand. He said something about how rock solid of a pen it was, how it would be useful as a LEO, and he let me keep it. I’ve gotten it through TSA checkpoints since then.

They’re a pretty nasty little striking weapon if you know how to use them. Like I said, not great, but better than your bare hands. Having a glass break on tap, and in a more compact form than a survival hammer, might be useful too.

      • Good points. I guess if I was given one, I would attempt to carry. I don’t know if I can bring myself to spend money on one though.

        • Honestly, I wouldn’t have one if it wasn’t a gift. If you can get one for free or real cheap it might be worth it or if you regularly go places where you get searched for weapons. Other than that… some of them are pretty pricey.
