The quote of the day is presented by Guns.com.

Burt Reiter said that, in theory, he agreed with calls to close loopholes that allow people to buy guns at shows or from private sellers without going through background checks. He said he doesn’t like the idea that “anybody can get a gun.”

“But the problem is, if we give that up, there’s no stopping,” said Reiter, 64, a lifetime NRA member who lives south of Fort Worth in Blum. “They’re going to want everything.”

Expanding background checks could present a host of logistic challenges, he said, especially for family members, friends or co-workers who want to sell or share their firearms. Reiter wondered how Texas officials could enforce such a law without creating a registry of all the guns in the state.

Over the past 25 years, gun rights in Texas have steadily expanded: Carrying a concealed gun became legal in 1994, and a measure allowing gun owners to openly carry their weapons was approved during Abbott’s first year in office in 2015. The state legislature, which meets every other year, has also expanded the places where weapons can be carried. Reiter and others sitting with him worried that those rights could be lost.

  1. We, as Americans have got to STOP believing that a Nanny State can solve ALL of our problems…

    Confiscation IS the Endgame.

    • I would say it’s close to the endgame, but there’s two most steps after confiscation. Concentration and lastly extermination.

      • Registration, Confiscation, Genocide the Marxists history of the Twentieth Century.

University of Hawaii study on Democide; death by government.

        https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/20TH.HTM

Do I think today’s Progressive Wing (Stalinist) of the Democrat Party will commit genocide if they get power? Hell yes!

The push for gun control is ALWAYS about people control.

      • The government run k-12 are doing a fine job of doing just that. Then students are sent off to college with the notion Lesbian dance theory or some other fine arts degree is the way to the top and the now millennial snowflake parents (still paying their own student loans) do nothing to tell their preciousness otherwise.

Too much of a supply of Target and fast food workers crying that they can’t make it on $x/hr. Then they vote for socialist (authoritarian) government to come free them from their self-imposed financial bondage to government mandated slavery and drag the rest of us along with them. God bless America.

  2. Sure, there’s a stopping point.
It’s somewhere around living in a dirt hut and eating tree bark soup.
That’s about when Napoleon and his hog brethren will stop taking from the sheep.

  3. Doesn’t like the idea that ” anyone can get a gun”?? Dafuq? Ever notice that particular chirp from the” lifelong NRA members” who are always suspicious of others exceeding the same rights they claim to care about? It’s as though they believe themselves superior to everyone else due to membership/affiliation/card or ” permission slip from our betters” in wallet. We call that the sound of ” Elitist Fudd” or ” Exclusivity Bias”.
Rights are for all of us or none of us. Whether or not his words were taken out of context or misquoted I don’t know. But we have to end this attitude. We actually need to attack the very underlying idea of that in order to exercise a natural right we need to be subject to or put others through Investigation Unending/Eternal Background Checks.
The excuse in favor of this is always” there’s dangerous people among you”. We ask ” how do you know they’re dangerous?”. Their response:” They just got out of prison …and they’re not fully Rehabilitated”…our answer should always be ” Hmm.. you had known dangerous people in one place to either rehabilitate or keep away from the populace at large due to the known dangerousness of them..and failed at both..then you release them into a potential victim pool…and seek to restrict the potential victims because you put a shark into a lagoon…” Come on in-thr water is fine.

    • Well, we also have outlets like the NYT, CNN and MSNBC complaining about the first amendment rights of others. People distrust and dislike their neighbors so much they are willing to give up their own liberty just to stick it to those other people.

They’ll spite us all into shackles.

    • “Rights are for all of us or none of us.”

We need to sharpen our thinking on this point.

Is it true that the right to arms is endowed upon ALL Gaia’s children?

Even if that is so (all Gaia’s children), is it also true that government shall not infringe on that right as respects EVERY class of person?

The difficulty is that the 2A reads “. . . the right of THE PEOPLE . . . shall not be infringed.” Do we respect the significance of those words – THE PEOPLE? Or, do we gloss over these words?

Progressives like to read-out of the Constitution whichever words get in their way. Shall we do the same? Or, do we find the meaning in each word and phrase, consistent with the context when those words were ratified?

What do the words “THE PEOPLE” mean? Certainly those who are citizens. Probably also those who hold green cards. Do they include illegal aliens?

If an illegal alien has but recently taken up residence in the US then I think not. Yet, if he has resided for decades, perhaps most of his life, I’m not so sure.

Did those words include “Tories”? Those resident in the US at the time of the founding who remained loyal to the British Crown? Do those words include an individual who declares his allegiance to the Islamic State?

After we have worked-out our own, respective, interpretations of these words, we have the opportunity to debate the questions with our brothers/sisters on the Anti-side.

Do they agree that illegal aliens are NOT guaranteed the right to arms under the text of the 2A? Or, should we naturalize EVERY person who presents at the border requesting a Naturalization Certificate? Should we issue a Naturalization Certificate with an AR-15 upon completion of the formalities (perhaps 15 minutes or so)?

Do the Antis believe that the right to vote runs to every person who has ever been present upon US soil who has attained the age of 18? Even if a person had been duly convicted of a felony? Do they also have the right to arms; notwithstanding the felony conviction?

What of an individual – a US citizen – who has been adjudicated an incompetent? That is to say, a judge has determined that the individual must have a guardian and could not be held criminally liable for his acts? Does such an incompetent, nevertheless, have the rights to vote and to bear arms?

If a felon or an incompetent have the rights to vote and bear arms then does a law-abiding individual who has NOT been adjudicated incompetent also have the right to bear arms?

And how do we, or the Antis, reconcile our answers to the foregoing questions with the Constitution?

I am NOT making any statement here of either approval or disapproval of the words “THE PEOPLE” as they appear in the 2A. I can think of very good arguments for why the right to arms of all peoples – aliens and US citizens alike – ought to be respected. Just as I can harbor doubts about allowing aliens, felons or incompetents to bear arms. Nevertheless, no one appointed me to edit the text of the 2A. Nor do I think any other person – individually – has any such authority. We must set aside our sentiments and reconciling ourselves to interpreting the plain text of the 2A as it was ratified.

      • If you want a good working definition of who “the people” are, look no further than the Constitution.

Article I, Section 2: “The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen by the People of the several States…”

OK, then, “the people” is everybody and anybody that is eligible to vote in a Federal election. And who might that be? Anybody, male or female, of any religion or political persuasion etc etc who is 18 years old or older, and has not, by way of due process, had their rights suspended.

  4. The real criminals will still not comply with laws.
This just makes it harder for the law-abiding.
There would be a need for a transfer “dealer” at all gun shows…to provide the service for non-dealers to sell to each other.
Maybe ATF would/could come up with a new position/license for people that want to be the middle man for gun transfers but not actually buy or sell or hold any firearms.
Or maybe let individuals access the NICS system for checks themselves.
And still…criminals will NOT comply. Go figure.

  5. “Burt Reiter said that, in theory, he agreed with calls to close loopholes that allow people to buy guns at shows or from private sellers without going through background checks. He said he doesn’t like the idea that “anybody can get a gun.”

I fail to see any of this in the 2 nd. amendment, however his line of thought matches up with that of the former NRA president when he and the organization sold out Americans and the 2 nd. amendment.

Karl T. Frederick, the president of the NRA, testified before Congress in 1934,on the national firearms act stating, “I have never believed in the general practice of carrying weapons. I do not believe in the general promiscuous toting of guns. I think it should be sharply restricted and only under licenses.”

  6. i saw a movie one time about what happens when only the government has guns (and labels an entire segment of the citizenry as deplorables and irredeemables):
    its called schindlers list
    it didnt end well
it wasnt exactly the feel good movie of the year

  7. –Four months into Abbott’s time as governor, a frenzied shootout broke out between two rival motorcycle gangs in the parking lot of a sports bar in Waco, leaving nine dead. Abbott denounced the “lawlessness.”–

Gee, if only there had been a strong law enforcement presence on hand to stop the bloodshed….

    • Actually that was a place in Waco that had a giant sign on the front inviting bikers in, and the sign said all clubs welcome. That probably wasn’t a good idea.

      • As far as I’ve heard, majority of the dead were shot by the cops. Hardly qualifies as “biker gang shootout” when cops do most of the shooting.

  8. The gun control organizations will never stop. Does anyone really believe that these organizations will say “OK we’re done. Bye” ? No, they will be encouraged by each new gun law and will want more.
Does anyone think that these same organizations will pass an effective law? No, they will always want to point to gun violence and the need to “Do Something.”

  9. Washington State passed a universal background check in 2014. To date one (1) person has been charged under the law. During that same time some 2.5 million NICS background checks have been done in the state. The person charged hasn’t gone to trial. The gun is gone and so is he. Supporters of the law do claim “50” people were denied purchasing a gun. (Out of 2.3 million )However, none of these “50” have even been charged.

    • Catching anyone now is not the goal. The Grabbers actually want people to ignore the UBC law and continue to private transferring without a check. Then, in 10 years, they will just start confiscating any gun older than 10 years from anyone younger than 31.

      • Nonsense. Too many legally owned “grandfathered” guns out there. Literally millions of them. Nice try at scaremongering, tho.

  10. We have the right to keep and bear arms. Don’t think I have to go through a background check for that. Try to buy a gun at the store without a id. They want us to be able to vote without a id though. Screwed up world. We are going to have to fix it soon enough.

  11. Oh boy, more bitching from California transplants and waffling from milquetoast politicians who cares more about staying in power than standing up for rights of the people. Who wants to bet in three or for decades Texas will be the next sanctuary city welfare state ala California?

    • Is Austin more Liberal or more Libertarian? I was TDY there 9 months ago and it had a San Diego vibe (young folks in flip flops walking the dog and runners exercising) but with lots of BBQ. In general, urban areas, across the US, seem to be more Liberal.

      • Austin is “progressive” not liberal.
The University of Texas is in Austin, the epicenter of leftist group think and indoctrination.

All those Youts you saw were socialists in training. Next time you go there engage some in conversation and bring up Beto or Bernie or Ocasional Cortex and see what they have to say.

        • “The University of Texas is in Austin, the epicenter of leftist group think and indoctrination.”

The place where they can wear a strap on dildo. Well fitted for public attire. But a well fitted gun belt with a open holstered gun is not wanted by the dildo wearing crowd.
          Priorities, priorities.

I hope Libertarians, Liberals and the Left keep wearing dildos in public. They are teaching the rest of the nation a great lesson in choice.

Sex toys in public or guns in public?

  12. I certainly hope anyone can get a gun. I also hope anyone who misuses a gun for crimes is punished, even more severely with a gun. But that part is always up in the air as deals are cut and many areas remain low prosecution zones.

Nom it’s easier to disarm law abiding people than face crimi nals who don’t GAS.

    • @Aaron – do you really think that currently law abiding people will continue as such? When laws become too onerous it is our duty to not obey.

  13. Until I hear serious discussion of mental health it’s all a waste of time, a something that does nothing. Even a couple of the mass shooting by religious zealots the perp was revealed to a bit nuts in other ways too. If “something” could accomplish anything would we have multiple thousands of overdose deaths?

  14. Hey wait just a dog gone second, sure sure someone MIGHT buy a gun from a private party but the fact of the matter is, most of the illegal guns are in fact stolen guns from burgled houses and cars. A small percentage of the guns out there in possession of prohibited people are stolen and not from “gun shows”

  15. If, somehow, a gun registry of all the guns in the state were created and had accuracy and covered every gun in the state and had complete compliance and never got hacked or tampered with and did not get used against people….

Wouldn’t that automatically mean that firearms from out of state would be considered illegal? Assuming criminals would not be not crossing state lines with them. Wouldn’t this mean you would have to have a Beretta plant in every single state (for example)?

  16. The leftists commenting in the linked article shows just what we normal people are up against. Typically hate filled, bigoted, arrogant, and uninformed.

On a side note…any Republican governor who thinks inviting Silicon Valley types into his/her state is a good thing is deluded. Leftist techies invade places like Texas, and they have the money and the motivation to crowd out the existing conservative population. It happens over and over.

Another problem is because of SCOTUS’ Citizen’s United ruling, a handful of billionaires, most of whom are rabid progressives, are able to use their money to control the political process. We used to be a country of “one man, one vote.” Not any more. Washington State got I 1639 because of the money used to push it by the Puget Sound billionaire boys club.

  17. Blue state denizens flee the high taxes, high cost of living, and onerous regulations…and then try to implement the same policies in their new homes.

Reminds me of Ilhan Omar, who fled Somalia only to bring the dysfunctional turd-world values to America.

  18. If I crooked and they took my gunms I hsve no right to bitch. But dont make me a crook because I have gunms to tske my gunms. I think the powers thst be just wsnt more tax revenue, its why they dont like prostitution, they cant tax it.

  19. If the government tells you that you don’t need or shouldn’t have a gun, that’s when you really need to have a gun! It’s at that time when your government is getting ready to do something so terrible to you that you would probably shoot then for their crimes! Government can only be trusted if you are watching what they are doing! When they do sneaky things behind closed doors, it’s time to be careful!

  20. Shortly after moving to Texas from Rhode Island, I got my LTC, something I was never able to do in my home state because R.I. is a “may issue” state and the Attorney General refuses to provide CCW licenses to those who are not the ruling elite. The R.I. Constitution says the same as the U.S. one, “Shall not be infringed” so he’s another worthless POS lawbreaker. I will continue to vote and support conservative candidates, local sheriffs and LEO officials. If you want to move here to Texas, leave your liberal bullshit viewpoint in the shithole you are leaving and be a conservative Texan.

    • i would love to move to the US (one of the free states) and i would be glad to leave behind the leftist crap and craphole australia. Shame you have to be a person of high note, exceptionally well educated, sponsored or from some third world shithole (in which case you can get in illegally and a blind eye is turned to some degree) rather than just someone who just wants to work hard and be a good american with the rights, liberties and responsibilities that go with that

  21. DON’T wind up like M Assachusetts! Where the local/state police are in absolute control of YOUR 2nd Amendment Rights! Where it is rendered the state of a LE issued privilege to purchase/own/posess, etc….No one here can exercise THEIR constitutional rights WITHOUT local/state police permissions! (Re: USC, Suppression of Rights….)

  22. Demographics is destiny. California was once as red as Texas. But as the demographics of Texas become more like those of California, so too will the politics.
Import not Americans become not America.
