It apparently wasn’t enough for Dick’s Sporting Goods to announce, in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, that they’d stop selling AR-15 rifles and won’t sell long guns to anyone under 21. Then they let it be known that, rather than disposing of their now non-salable ARs and other forbidden inventory in ways that would have salvaged some value, they instead decided that they would destroy it all in order to reduce the chances that any of the items might someday be used in a mass shooting. Or something.

Now, The Federalist reports that Dick’s is engaged in actively lobbying Congress for stiffer gun control legislation . . .

Dick’s Sporting Goods, which announced in February it would no longer sell rifles to anyone under the age of 21, hired three Beltway lobbyists to lobby Congress for gun control, according to federal records reviewed by The Federalist.

The lobbying records show Dick’s hired two Democrats and one Republican from Glover Park Group, a DC-based government affairs firm, for “[l]obbying related to gun control.” No other policy issues were listed in the disclosure form filed by the firm. The disclosure forms show Dick’s pro-gun control lobbying effort began official on April 27, 2018. The official registration form noting Dick’s retention of Glover to push for gun control was filed on Monday morning.

Alienating a significant percentage of the retailer’s customers doesn’t seem to be a concern for CEO Edward Stack. He’s bound and determined to move the gun control ball forward.

As Stack wrote in the Washington Post in March . . .

In the weeks since we at Dick’s Sporting Goods announced plans to stop selling assault-style rifles, plans to only sell firearms to those over 21 and other new policies, we have been striving to keep this conversation going. We have met with a number of lawmakers and have talked with many of our peers in the retail industry. We have spoken with strong-willed advocacy groups and visited with families in Parkland. …

This issue transcends our company’s bottom line. We suspected that speaking out would have a negative impact on our business. But this was about our values and standing up for what we think is right.

With the latest filing revealing the anti-gun lobbying effort, it appears that Stack’s commitment to seeing more gun control restrictions on the books wasn’t just virtue-signaling lip service.

As Stack predicted, his Fudd-like devotion to limiting the kinds of firearm Americans can purchase isn’t doing much for his company’s stock price. And while Stack owns a majority of Dick’s shares, as a publicly traded company, he has a fiduciary duty to maximize Dick’s earnings and ROI. It’s hard to imagine that his shareholders will be terribly happy to hear about the company’s new lobbying effort that won’t result in a penny of extra profit.

      • live in the lake area dicks is the big sporting goods store in the area ,but I will go out of my way to use other sporting goods company.

        • “This issue transcends our company’s bottom line. We suspected that speaking out would have a negative impact on our business. But this was about our values and standing up for what we think is right.”

So, I guess violation of the second amendment rights of millions of individuals between the ages of 18 and 21 is the right thing to do. I think Dick’s values and their “right thing to do” perspective needs some Constitutional educating. I will no longer have anything to do with Dick’s sporting goods. Their CEO is an idiot!

        • I will never step into one of their stores again. I hope they “pre-paid” their lobbyists because I think they’re going to have a tough time paying for lobbyists in the future after a boycott takes all the cash out of their coffers.

        • Dicks – 20 miles from my house. Academy – 40 miles from my house. Bass Pro 90 miles away.

I have been paying for the extra gas to drive 80 or even 180 miles (round trip) to visit a sporting goods store for about 2 years now. I won’t claim to have been “boycotting” Dicks, even before the recent idiot moves, I just didn’t like their stores, their prices, or their selection. Now, I am certain I will never darken their door again – untill their “going out of business” sale!!!!! Fortunately, Midway has good prices, and ships at a reasonable cost, so I don’t have to take long drives too often.

      • Cabela’s and Bass Pro drinkin’ champagne today, their stores will soar with profit, I assure you, and dick’s will go down like a sears or Kmart

  1. Looks like a reasonable short-sale opportunity developing here.

Will the SJWs buy there cammo at Dick’s to keep their revenue high enough to cover costs?

    • I dunno about that, it’s already down by about half over the last year. It would take something really big to push it farther down.

  2. MANUFACTURERS OF FIREARMS, AMMUNITION AND ACCESSORIES MUST IMMEDIATELY STOP DOING BUSINESS WITH DICK’S AND THEIR SUBSIDIARIES. That means no more shotguns, ammo, hunting gear, etc. the NRA must get involved too. Now is the time for us to reach out to Remington, Mossberg, etc. and demand they discontinue selling items to this corporation.

    • I second this motion.

Dick’s Sporting Goods makes a profit on the sales of any remaining firearms and ammunition that they continue to sell. Since they have announced that they are using those profits to lobby fedzilla to eliminate firearms and ammunition sales, any firearms and ammunition manufacturers who distribute to Dick’s Sporting Goods is contributing to their own company’s demise.

It is time to stop supporting Dick’s Sporting Goods. Perhaps Dick’s Sporting Goods will some day realize the error of their ways when their sales of non-firearm sporting goods plummet — since people who purchase firearms and ammunition also purchase plenty of other sports equipment.

      • Not a bad idea. What brands of firearms does dicks carry?

Need to email those companies and let them know they are cutting their own throats, and they should stop.

        • “What brands of firearms does dicks carry?”

Mostly the usual suspects, like Savage, Mossberg, Ruger and Remington; also some lower-end guns from Winchester and Beretta and it’s affiliates such as Benelli and Stoeger.

Outside of southern New England, the product mix might be different.

        • Ralph, that’s pretty much exactly what ‘my’ Portland area Dick’s carried the last time I looked a couple years ago.

        • Whatever brands Dicks were selling, it will no longer include Mossberg or Hi-Point. Both of those firearms makers have severed ties with Dicks.

      • Any firearms manufacturer, ammunition manufacturer, hunting or target shooting related items manufacturers are “aiding and abetting” Dick’s Sporting Goods by moving their products through their stores and allowing Dick’s to profit and support this law-breaking practice of refusing to sell based on age discrimination with the current laws in place.

    • I will never set foot in a Dick’s Spoorting Goods store again. I urge all People Of The Gun to do the same. There was a time when this kind of boycott was hard to get going. With the internet and social media, however, it is very easy to spread the world. If POTG actually take their business elsewhere, Dick’s Sporting Goods will be in a world of hurt. Couldn’t happen to a better bunch.

      • I may set foot in a Dicks again to window shop before ordering direct from the maker (UnderArmour for example) or from Amazon. but not a cent will I spend there

      • Well stated. I liked Dick’s until now. I will never enter one of their stores again, much less purchase anything from them. I do hope that every hunter, fisherman or even sports enthusiast will boycott them. Also, any other stores that follow Dick’s agenda. All of these people are listening to High School kids. Kid’s that are still in a learning mode, or supposed to be, of History, Science, and etc. Real school subjects. Not gun control which they haven’t a clue as to what they are talking about. One can tell from each of their speeches that it is scripted by adults that don’t have a clue themselves. If someone gave me, a VET, the meanest looking AR-15 the left could possibly perceive to be a military assault weapon that could be purchased by a law abiding citizen, and told me to go to war with it, I would laugh in their face after telling them to kiss my *ss. Should a soldier hit the battle field with one of these, he\she would be dead in less than five minuets. Excuse my ranting, but it all *isses me off.

    • Springfield Armory just announced that they will no longer do business with Dick’s. I went on their website and let them know what I thought of their actions and that they have lost my business too.

    • There is a rumor that Dick’s is opening a store in our city. Now that we know their feelings on gun control and the NRA, we’re going to shut them down. We’re in south Texas, and many of us are friends of the second amendment, which means they can go back to where they came from.

    • Springfield & Mossberg just issued statements about no longer selling anything to Dick’s/Field and Stream. Should have sold my stock sooner, got a bunch when I worked for them. Quit because of their asinine polices.

  3. Morons! I guess Dicks is going to determine what’s okay for the US citizens to own/purchase/carry from now on… Globalism on the MARCH! Just like the 3rd Reich…

    • Oh, you can still cross the threshold. Just be carrying a sign that says “Suck My Dick’s”.

To hell with Dick’s Sporting Goods.

  4. Do you want to go bankrupt? Because this is how you go bankrupt. They’ll teach this in business school on “how to be a DICK”…

    • Nah. I went to business school. They wouldn’t give courses on how to fail. The course you’re thinking of is “Why not be a Dick?”

  5. Spending the money here so they won’t have anything left to give their creditors.

Anyone smell Bloomberg in the background? Old guy stink is coming all the way to Iowa fro NY…

  6. Ahh… the Ruger strategy. Use the force of government to drag your competitors down to your level.
    Venezuela right around the corner.

      • That’s pretty much what I’m expecting the political types to do when they start ‘regulating’ social media. Entrench the current dominant orgs, strangle competing upstarts.

The currently dominant orgs are hard-D, this will not be good for anyone who isn’t on the left. The Republicans in Congress need to understand this, and I don’t think they do.

    • Beat me to it.

This is one of the ways that cronie capitalism works. Can’t compete in a free market; constrain the market to suit. Economic gerrymandering, with a splash of tyranny.

  7. Sounds like a play to minimize possible damage from the lawsuits that are facing. If they can push for the federal age to purchase long guns to 21 then it could go a long way to sway future juries. There are 2 suits filed now if more young adults get involved it go class action over time. If age is changed to 21 then Dick’s would only be liable for those discriminated against before change.

        • So go in to your local Dick’s and try out the items or try on the clothes. Get the brand information. On your way out, tell them why you’ll be purchasing these items online/elsewhere. Easy peasy

        • Trueborn nailed this. Doesn’t matter if it’s shoes or lax armor. Try it on in the store, write down the brand/size and order online. If you’re smart about it you’ll prolly save 30% or more on the price and if the store has no “footprint” in your state you’ll also save the sales tax.

        • On top of all that, while you are in the store trying things on, enlist the ‘help’ of their associates as much as you can. More of their time wasted = more of Dick’s money wasted.

        • Just walk into your local Dick’s store with your amazon app running on your phone. Once you find what you like you can have it ordered before you leave the store.

  8. Between softball and basketball for my kids I drop a bit of change, so much so I got one of their gold reward cards…well that will be shredded and sent off to corporate with a nice letter.

    • This type of action is crucial. It’s not enough to “boycott”, but rather, that they are told why. Thank you. Bravo.

  9. As a big box retailer them wanting more regulation makes sense. It means that they would kneecap competitors. The IL dealer licensing scam had carve outs for big boxes like Dicks. I really don’t want to be at the mercy of what I can buy new because of people like this paying off the government.

  10. Edward ” Dick ” Stack. Way to go. Out of business that is. I personally have never shopped at Dick’s . they allways have a higher price tag on their guns / rifles pretty much all merchandise. Now this cowardly act of destroying perfectly good AR-15 style so called assault weapons ? My AR-15 has never assaulted anyone. Furthermore I don’t know of any instance in our history , of any weapon walking itself in to any place and assaulting anyone. Edward stack talks about his values !! The way I see it his values are very misguided. Does he value the right of 18 year old’s that go to war and fight for our country , no. Does he value our constitutional right to bear arms against tyrants , again no. That is because Mr Stack is a tyrant. I hope that anyone who would think of shopping at Dick’s , field & stream. Will consider the facts , stay out of these stores. Shop on line. Primary Arms , Cross armory , Buds , Opticsplanet. And many more online outlets like them. Right to your door svc. Cheapper than dirt is another good one. Look in to them. Shop Dick’s no more.

    • Not after the way Cheaper Than Dirt price gouged and canceled orders for in-stock items so they could charge more during the post Sandy Hook panic. Unless you think $90 for an AR mag is reasonable…

CTD is as bad as Dick’s.

      • Cancelling orders is BS but the rest is not gouging it’s raising prices to what the market will support, that’s called a “free market”. The reason for demand doesn’t matter. What matters is that demand has risen creating a higher price point.

If you want the item you pay the price the market has currently set or you wait until it comes back down. That’s capitalism. The same thing happened with gas masks and respirators online when it was announced that NK missiles shot over the North Pole could reach Chicago.

        • I used to buy things of CTD, but not after they jacked up the price of AR mags 5 years ago. A regular retailer selling stuff for the “panic prices” lunatics are trying to get on Gunbroker is not one that should ever be trusted.

        • Strych9 is correct. Gouging is charging exorbitant prices for food to someone that is starving or for a jacket to someone that is freezing. Taking advantage of dire circumstances for enormous profit. Raising prices to reflect demand is NOT GOUGING. It is the free market. Don’t like it? Me neither, so I don’t pay those prices.

Cancelling orders to resell at the higher rate is greedy and extremely poor service, but hardly criminal. Still, they’ll not get my business as a result- free market is a two way street.

      • “CTD is as bad as Dick’s.”

Are they? Did CTD hire lobbyists to lobby for gun control?

CTD were douchebags and slimeballs, certainly. But there seems to be a difference between a low-down, filthy money-grubbing scumbag, and an organization actively fighting to destroy your civil rights.

  11. Dickhead’s is relying on gun owners to remain the generally law-abiding types that we’ve always been. If they had changed policies and started selling anti-missile systems to Israel, say, they could expect picketing and broken windows from the other side.

  12. It’s smart. Doubling Down. They already lost the people of the gun with the first press release and policy change. And, we have long memories. Might as well pander to the Anti’s now, cause that’s all they have left. (Yes, it’s a dumb move from jump street, but might as well double down on the play.)

    • I think you’re onto something here – they can be the “Gun Control Sports Store” for the SJW crowd. Instead of Good Housekeeping, they get the Moms Demand Action seal of approval.

Problem is, that’s not a demographic that is big into brick and mortar. Circling the drain sounds coming soon…

  13. this is so transparent. they are doing this in hopes the Feds will enact the 21 year old rule, then Dicks can say they lifted the ban in their stores and are only following the law. fuck them. i can’t wait for them to go belly up.

  14. Sorry folks but greed rules the world. Remember the big stink when Walmart pulled guns from many of its stores all the ammo makers and firearms accessory people still fight to get Wal-Mart contracts. At our Walmart we have not had any guns in the store for years.

    • Maybe in your area. Not really a fight to get into wally world when so many other retailers sell in my area including local indoor ranges.

    • My local Walmarts in southwest Ohio all still have .22s and shotguns. When I lived on the east side of Cleveland the Walmarts never had anything besides some BB guns, though.

    • Again — there’s a difference between a company choosing what they will and not sell (which I totally support) and a company choosing to actively campaign to destroy my Constitutionally-protected civil rights (which I do not support).

The two issues couldn’t be further apart.

    • California banned .50Cal ammo. Barret cancelled all state, county, and local contracts in Cali for their rifles. Barret came out ahead financially. I guarantee you that Cali contracts in relation to nationwide represents a larger slice of pie than Dicks ammo sales compared to other stores. I mean, you really think Federal’s gonna take a hit if they don’t sell to the 3rd choice FUDD store?

    • My local Walmart in Southwestern Virginia has many long guns, including high powered rifles, shot guns and rimfires other than those nasty black ones. They also have a good selection of ammo. They are the only place in the county to buy new guns.

  15. Dick’s name reflects an important part of the male anatomy. Because Ed Stack is soooo inclusive, he should change the name of the company to something more gender-neutral — like A$$h0le’s.

  16. As a DC Republican lobbyist and rock solid 2A supporter you all might be interested to learn that the Glover Park Group was founded former by Bill Clinton Administration staff. Strategically they’re banking on Democrats taking the House so they can push Pelosi on moving anti bills. They’ll probably die in the senate but they’re playing the Long game hoping trump loses in 2020. Many of the dollars Dicks sends to Glover Park will end up financing the campaigns of democrats running for Congress through lobbyist contributions. People shouldn’t be fooled by the fact that a republican is also registered to lobby. This is a democrat firm who plows money to democrat candidates for office.

  17. Actually, this makes business sense for Dick’s. Having decided they won’t sell MSR’s to anyone, they don’t want anyone else to do so either.

What’s concerning is the success the gun grabbers are having in using private businesses like Dick’s and various financial institutions to implement the gun restrictions they can’t pass through the legislative process.

So now, businesses are a form of unelected shadow government.

  18. As a publicly traded company, Dick’s has a fiduciary duty to it stockholders to maximize profit
Someone who owns even one share of dicks stock has a right to sue them for devaluing the stock
I also second the idea of going into the local Dick’s, handling the merchandise and buying the item you want online
    At a significant savings

    • I support class action lawsuits by all the shareholders. Also is the CEO committing fraud in the way he is running the business into the ground especially since I doubt that he is keeping shareholders informed.

  19. Do not worry about what they sell or do not sell. If at all possible, don’t spend your money in Dick’s Sporting Goods, or Field & Stream. Their money is actively going towards gun-control.

  20. Please read the “The Preamble to The Bill of Rights” which follows. The Bill of Rights gives no-one rights, it spells out the rights we have and casts them as in stone to insure that government cannot alter them in any way. Not even the amendment processes in Article V. of the Constitution.

All the arguing and posturing about gun control rights is for one purpose only, to make people think that gun control can be exacted upon citizens of the United States. It cannot! No-one posing as government in any of the three branches of government has the power to change anything about the ten amendments that comprise the “Bill of Rights”. The word “Bill” means list. Thus, its title could be “List of Rights” because that is exactly what the Bill of Rights is.

The Preamble to The Bill of Rights

Congress of the United States begun and held at the City of New York, on
Wednesday the fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.

THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its
powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the
    beneficent ends of its institution.

RESOLVED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, two thirds of both Houses concurring, that the
following Articles be proposed to the Legislatures of the several States, as amendments to the Constitution of the United States, all, or any of which Articles, when ratified by three fourths of the said Legislatures, to be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of the said Constitution; viz.

  21. I guess he figures if people can’t buy them anywhere, somehow that will help.

Or he really has just drunk the kool-aid.

  22. There is a Dick’s in central Pennsylvania near my in-laws. If hunters stop shopping there, I have no idea how they’ll stay in business.

  23. This issue transcends our company’s bottom line.

Well, I guess we’ll see about that. And we’ll also see where that bottom line goes. I wonder if it transcends the company’s desire to stay in business?

  24. Move makes sense, just like TwitFace now wanting regulation of the interwebs. In a regulatory cleptocracy, your real customers are the overlords, not your — er — customers.

  25. Dick’s did this? Well, now we know where “Dick move” came from. (Time travel. We always knew they’d do this.)

  26. Interesting move by the company.
I’ve never seen a company shoot themselves in the foot,
    watch the blood loss,
then apply a tourniquet to their neck!

  27. Appreciation extended to all those having now informed us that ‘Dick’s Sporting Goods’ has hired minions to lobby for ‘issues related to gun control’. Presuming their purpose to be that of attempting to pressure legislators into enacting more ‘gun control’ laws:-
all that’s required in this circumstance for lawmakers to ‘Secure’ this particular ‘Right’ of the people to Keep and Bear Arms is to simply state “No”.
In courteous response to those persons remaining adamant about the necessity of enacting more ‘gun control’ laws, any given ‘representative’ need only to point out the law specified via the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States which expressly states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Out of courtesy for the benefit of those who may not know, any given ‘representative’ could go on to explain that the basis of an actual criminal offense is intentionally violating the actual ‘Rights’ of another person or persons, and anyone who would enact any further ‘gun control’ laws would necessarily be violating the actual ‘Rights’ of the Citizens, and thus become an actual criminal under both common and written law.
    All very simple. Really.

    Philo. “One Mind, Many Perspectives”
Do No Harm / Successfully Defend.

  28. I am done, ever setting foot in o e of their stores again. And sharing my position with many friends. I will drive a half hour extra to go to
    Bass Pro

  29. I won’t shop there any more. They are going about this all wrong As you all know its not about. ARs or the gun. Has to do with checking back ground

  30. Dick’s sporting goods: While I never patronized your stores that much, I can now say I’ll never set foot in any of your stores again..There are plenty of other sporting goods stores.

  31. I new there was something about Dick’s I didn’t like when it came into the neighborhood. I went into the store once to buy a box of .17 HMR bullets. That was the only thing I ever bought and the only time I went into one of their stores.

Interesting that they are arrogant enough to cut out a segment of their business. So many retailers are trying to make ends meet. Just hasn’t quite hit them yet. They WILL be closing stores in the near future with that kind of attitude.

  32. I personally don’t buy anything from Dick’s, but I expect that their business will shortly be going down the toilet. I also expect that Field and Stream magazine will be losing a bunch of subscribers as well since they are owned by Dicks. I expect that Dicks is dead.

    • F&S magazine, to the best of my knowledge, has nothing to do with the Dick’s spinoff Field and Stream 1871 stores. Maybe the F&S magazine should sue Ed Stack for defamation.

  33. Congratulations Mr. Stack. We’re pleased to learn that you have come to your senses and are making serious efforts to rid the nation of guns. Eventiually your actions will lead to the repeal of the Secomd Amendment, which will make America safe again. Hopefully other CEO’s will follow suit.

I and others from the American Family Action Committee have been calling for the boycott of Dick’s and other retailers, like Walmart, Cabela, Kroger and other sellers of all guns and ammo that kill other human beings.

In addition we’re calling for the defeat of all politicians who take blood money from terrorist organizations like the NRA, and we’re calling for our politicians to pass legislation to prohibit the manufacture of guns and ammo except for use by the military and law enforcdement organizations.

Our action agenda for gun elimination includes:
DEFEAT…of politicians who support and take money from the NRA and other terrorist organizations.
BOYCOTT…of all stores that sell guns and ammo.
    REPEAL …of the Second Amendment.

  34. I plan on going into Dick’s and filling a cart with a thousand dollars worth of merchandise, going through checkout and then after they ring everything up telling them that I changed my mind since they are anti gun and just walk out leaving them to put everything back. Every one would do the same to run up their cost of doing business and kill their profits

  35. I hate to let Dick’s CEO know, but after their announcement I went to an undisclosed store of theirs and STILL purchased an AR. I will let them figure out which store did it. I laughed about it at the time, because it blew his current stance out of the water. The employee should not be punished because he is hired to sell inventory. Period!
