The 2018 Parkland, Florida, shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School led to an avalanche of tragedy, including seventeen fatalities, the knee-jerk signing of Senate Bill 7026 by then-Governor Rick Scott, and David Hogg. Unfortunately, we can’t bring back the lives of those we lost that day, and it seems David Hogg will be dining out on their loss for the rest of his life, but we can restore some sense to the arbitrary and reactive nature of the anti-Second Amendment measures imposed upon Floridians since that day. And that’s exactly what Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is setting his sights on next.
Among the SB 7026 provisions that would have made zero difference to someone hell-bent on taking innocent life was a raised the minimum age for firearm purchases from 18 to 21, banning the sale and possession of bump stocks, and increased law enforcement authority to seize weapons and ammunition from those they deemed mentally unfit, also known as a red-flag law, where property is “temporarily” confiscated prior to a person being found guilty of any crime.
Governor DeSantis recognized that Florida law fell behind that of other conservative states when it came to defending the Second Amendment, singling out red-flag laws and the minimum age issue. He now intends to repeal some of the provisions found in the bill that he feels unnecessarily infringe on the Constitutional rights of his constituents, according to his State of the State speech, which took place on Tuesday, March 4.
“The free state of Florida has not exactly led the way on protecting Second Amendment rights… We need to be a strong Second Amendment state,” DeSantis said.
In 2023, DeSantis signed permitless concealed carry into law and characterized red-flag laws aptly as a “due process violation,” suggesting the burden of proof be the state’s obligation.
Governor DeSantis also opined on the idea that the recent age restrictions had “taken away the rights of young adults to purchase a long gun,” pointing out that an 18-year-old soldier can carry a rifle overseas in defense of his country but could not purchase a hunting rifle upon return home to Florida. Ultimately, the Governor is forgetting that service members, law enforcement, and correctional officers may purchase long guns in Florida starting at the age of 18. This fact remains problematic, however, and flies in the face of American principles, creating a separate class of citizens and affording them a different set of rights than the general public.
But wherever there is an actual American who respects the Constitution of the United States and takes their oath to defend it seriously, you’ll always find some pinko pseudo-American lurking in the shadows, hungry for a seat at the authoritarian table. One such mouth breather is House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell, who claims without foundation or any cogent explanation that DeSantis’ goals will make Florida less safe.
“It seems to me that we’re breaking our promise to the parents and the students of Parkland… [The changes] would be awful for our law enforcement. We absolutely want to keep them safe as they do their job. I was very troubled by his comments,” Driskell driveled.
Since you’re pretending to give a toss when it comes to keeping covenants, why don’t we wax nostalgic about those enumerated guarantees in the Bill of Rights and your sworn duty of office to defend them, sweetheart?
But enough about that societal cancer. This is about a governor’s recommitment to protect and defend the rights of Florida citizens, a goal that I hope we find trending soon through the halls of the White House as we approach the due date for the Attorney General’s Second Amendment autopsy that is expected to accompany a plan of action to restore that which has been broken. It is ironic and worrisome, however, that such a monumental responsibility is now in the hands of Pam Bondi, who presided as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 – 2019 when the provisions that DeSantis now wishes to repeal were enacted. Food for thought.
I agree with you on gun control issues but when are you going to grow up, graduate from kindergarten, and stop name calling. Liberal people are not pinkos. Use your brain.
RE: “Food for thought.”
The food for thought includes what happens when gullible shell-shocked lawmakers do not take into account the Gun Control they are about to cater to is Rooted in Racism and Genocide. It is up to the law-abiding to demand law-makers always say no to Gun Control based on its diabolical History and its infringement on a Constitutional Right.
Bottom line…Anyone who sits silent and allows the Second Amendment to take a backseat to an agenda History Confirms is Rooted in Racism and Genocide needs to be transported back in time to where they find themselves sitting among a row of defenseless diseased prisoners squirting poop in a trough.

Debbie, give it a rest. My son and I drove to Crystal River for a visit with a good friend over the March 1-2 weekend. Mike and Tori treated us to dinner at the Blackwater Restaurant on the Withlacoochee River. The next morning John, Mike and I attended a small, local gun show. John came home with a VZ-58 and a Chris Reeves fixed blade. I came home with three new Randalls and a LW 1911 and a new Chris Reeves Umnumzaan. It was a nice weekend. Oh, Debbie, I almost forgot about you. That show was in Newberry, FL. Almost next door to Rosewood,FL. Drove within spitting distance of Rosewood. There were Blacks at the the gun show. No one gave them a second glance.
Guys, while I’m on the subject. If you are ever in central Florida check out Gun Trader Shows. They’re small, but they are a gun show. They hit the Crystal River, Inverness, Newberry, Fanning Springs and Dade City circuit. If you like firearms you can go to any gun show. If you know about firearms go to one of these shows. There were more Colt SAA than Glocks. More real custom knives than fantasy knives. Before the unintiated accuse me of being a FUDD, I own half a dozen Glocks. I also own half a dozen Colt SAA. And around 50 Randalls. Sorry for your luck if you collect fantasy knives.
Randalls AND Chris Reeve? I’m jealous. Been to several in that area (used to be from Brooksville) and most people don’t know what a Randall or Chris Reeve is.
FN, I learned about the Newberry show from a friend who went with a friend of his on a day long turnaround with an acquaintance I don’t know. Mark came home with tales I could hardly believe. Tallahassee is close enough for a turnaround. I recommend lunch at the Lighthouse on 19 if you pass that way. Besides, you get to see the Suwannee River. After a couple more of his visits, I had to go to one. Did I mention I bought a few books and a print also?
I think Debbie was on about Senator Rick Scott…the then-governor who knee-jerked after Parkland.
I’ve written to Senator Scott multiple times through Trump 1.0 and most recently about 2 weeks ago, this time to scold him for being a part of the Senate “asking mother may I” style via a letter from some senators to the ATF, asking for the ATF to be nicer to US Citizens.
Senator Scott had signed that letter and had passed that post-Parkland bill when he was governor, so I asked him why the US Senate was being so conciliatory toward the unelected bureaucrats of the ATF who have done nothing but try to take away our 2A rights for decades now (but most often during the abysmal Biden national mental illness). No response from Senator Scott as yet.
This all happened after Senator Rubio had already moved on to the State Department, so he wasn’t in on it, and it was too soon for the incoming Senator Moody to have screwed up on anything just yet.
Senator-now-Secretary Rubio has his own weaknesses of meekness. Remember, he was the one who was part of the “Gang of 8” who voted for Amnesty some years ago. I don’t trust him because of that, but since I couldn’t single-handedly get him primaried, I had to vote for him in November. Oh well, hopefully Moody will be a big improvement.
So yeah, I’ve had to constantly keep track of our Florida senators to make sure they didn’t renege on their 2A responsibilities to us.
But the point that Debbie makes is still a good one. I have not yet used the “root of racism and genocide” in my letters to our Florida Senators. I’ll include that next time. If white repub politicians are scared of anything, it’s of being shown that some of their decisions can be seen as being racist. That’s how I will play it.
So I’ll bring that up when I next write to my senators, and I thank Debbie for the reminder. If you’re in Florida, Gadsden, maybe you could do that too.
The more the merrier. I’d love to attend a gun show one of these days in CFL. Be safe!
FL seems safer for individuals than blue states, especially from political vandalism, such as that currently directed toward Tesla drivers. So it’s no surprise that commies are working to roll back FL’s self defense laws.
As far as actually strengthening 2A laws, I am not optimistic, but support the Governor 100%.
Unfortunately, there are Rinos lurking in the bushes. Commies and Rinos, o my, o my… Do your family proud, don’t be one.
Does anyone on staff think it’s a bad idea to use White headlines over a light photo background, making the headline virtually impossible to read?
I’m not on staff. But yes, it sucks. In fact the new site sucks.
Yes. It sucks. As does the site redo.
I’m not fond of the font and all the extra lines of spaces.
And the fact that I can’t edit my posts and coooreqt mie turribal speeling and garamm’r.
At least I’m not getting moderated anymore. For a moment there, I thought maybe management was looking for MORE swear words, not less. Freaked me out, lol.
I wonder what US AG Bondi feels about rolling back the anti-2A laws she supported when she was FL AG…
