Liberator, c Defense Distributed

House Democrats will introduce a bill on Tuesday to require that all firearms include at least one metal component that is integral to the design of the gun, says The Hill. The bill is a knee-jerk response to the abysmal failings of the TSA to detect even normal regular all-metal guns, and will appropriately be introduced at LaGuardia airport in new York City to highlight that linkage. Current law already bans the production of all plastic guns, but the bill aims to go one step further . . .

Under the proposal, it will be illegal to produce a firearm where the removal of the metal component does not result in an inoperable firearm. For example, the gun could use a metal barrel — removal of which would render the gun inert.

This new “Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act” comes at a time when no one has ever been killed by a 3D printed gun, and criminals are unable to purchase the expensive equipment required to produce such a gun. In addition, the current generation of 3D printed guns are wildly impractical for just about any use other than browning the pants of House Democrats.

As with the rest of the gun control proposals, the Republican-led congress seems unlikely to pass the legislation at this time.

    • Ammunition is critical to the operation of a firearm. So long as you aren’t using caseless, polymer jacketed frangible rounds, any plastic pistol will meet that legal requirement.

      • I want to walk up to the podium in the U.S. house and say “how many assholes we got on this ship anyhow? ”

        (“I knew it…”)

        • I just want to know how so many words can get written on papers and spoken on the floor, without anyone coming the least bit near realizing the stupidity inherent in this fear of the magical and fictional “all plastic undetectable gun”. I’m more worried about their undetectable senses of reason, logic, and inquisitiveness.

    • …or the ammunition. I have yet to see a firearm that wasn’t rendered inoperable by the removal of its ammunition.

  1. Haven’t they tried to do this already? Or am I confusing it with one of the hundreds of other passed/proposed pieces of lunacy the Democratic Party has offered up?

  2. Wait a minute. If I remove the metal components of an AR-15, it becomes an inoperable plastic gun.

    HMMM

    • How about the Sig P320?? It is modular, and the frames are replaceable. Are they going to ban plastic frames now?

  3. (yawn). Yes, Let’s make it more illegal – that will show the criminals we mean business. this time. or not

    • It’s about intentions instead of results, desires instead of outcomes, and social utopia instead of reality.

  4. The Democrats also tried the Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act during the 2013-2014 legislative session. It went nowhere. The old Undetectable Firearms Act still exists and was reauthorized for another ten-year period.

  5. I thought there already was a law mandating a minimum number of oz of ferrous metal. IIRC, it was back when the scary plastic “undetectable” Glock brand Glocks showed up on the market way back when.

Maybe lawmakers and their staff should be familiar with the law before makimg more?

    • Never underestimate the stupidity of large groups of people. Group think tends toward the lowest common denominator.

    • I thought there already was a law mandating a minimum number of oz of ferrous metal.

You thought right. It’s called the Undetectable Firearms Act. This new piece of bushwah is called the Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act. ‘Cause gungrabbers are nothing if not modernized.

  6. OH good!

More hopelessly incompetent firearms legislation from those who have vast experience in the arena.

    The democrats.

  7. In the spirit of not-even-wrong 80s nostalgia I propose to make it illegal to shoot at any glass if there are officers in the vicinity without any shoes on.

  8. Wouldn’t that ban every polymer framed pistol? You render these guns inoperable by removing the slide assembly.

    • You have it backwards. They want to ban any gun that doesn’t have a metal part that’s required to make it work. Since removing the metal slide and/or barrel renders it inoperable, your factory-made Cheezwiz guns are safe (from this proposal, at least).

  9. So wait…
“Under the proposal, it will be illegal to produce a firearm where the removal of the metal component does not result in an inoperable firearm.”
Essentially, it bans nothing? As far as I know, all “plastic” firearms use at least a metal firing pin, even the ones where the cartridge itself serves as the barrel. Removing that would make it inoperable, and therefore not subject to the ban. Or am I missing something?

    • This would affect none of the production guns on the market. This is supposedly about 3-d printed all plastic guns that could be made to function while being totally undetectable by metal detectors. You could theoretically do away with firing pins and primers and make a multi-barrel muzzle loader pistol that used a cap and ball type system with ceramic

The only people I can conceive of who would want a gun like this would want it specifically for getting through metal detectors. Like maybe terrorists wanting to hijack a plane or professional hitman who wanted to whack a judge or other official inside a secure building. Does anyone think either of those types of people are going to care about a ban?

Having said all that, I can’t say I care that much about it. If it let’s the Dems play a little security theatre for the masses while keeping their mitts off of real guns that we actually want to own, let them have at it.

      • Dropped part of a sentence there. I was going to say “with ceramic or composite projectiles” and non-metal ignition caps, like a more robust version of the kind kid’s cap-guns used to have.

      • But if it’s illegal, it will be able to stop them, because it’s illegal.

That sounds like reasonable politician “logic”, right?

  10. Sooooo…what will this accomplish- More security theater? I’m a tad more concerned with banning gun info on the interwebz. And you thought there was an uproar about green tip ammo-THIS might get left-wing lunatics on our side…

  11. Every firearm has a metal component, without which it’s inoperable. That component is called “ammunition”.

  12. @Waynefrom FL – it’s the Liberator – the first printed plastic guy from the Defense Distributed guys. Yeah – it’s a toy, basically, but an important proof of concept.

As far as fear of printed guns goes – what about the laser-sintered metal guns? Will they need to have embedded plastic parts that make the gun inoperable if removed? 🙂

    • Next they’ll introduce a law that only an FFL can manufacture a firearm. Or have the ATF reclassify homemade firearms, so that it requires something like a Form 1.

  13. Another proposed ban on law abiding people? Those short-sighted Constitution hating traitors! Like any criminal is going to make certain their composite firearm is detectable! Hey Murphy, better make sure we use a metal trigger so the detectors go off. How freaking stupid are these politicians who present these ideas? (Pretty damn stupid).

  14. If I had a nickel for every time the phrase “Democrats propose ban” has been used, I could afford that M1A Scout Squad. Anyone still think the Democrat party is “liberal” and not downright fascist?

Such utter, evil contempt for freedom. Subhuman villains, every single one of them. It’s dark times when the greatest threat to America isn’t the crazed, mass murdering nutjobs in the middle east, but rather our own fellow “citizens.”

  15. So, New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, and Southern California, any chance of y’all getting fed up with us freedom-loving yokels and seceding any time soon? We PROMISE not to start a war to force you back into the Union!

  16. Isn’t this already a requirement for production pieces? The reason why my M&P and poly AR lower have the serial number of a metal plate?

  17. Democrats have proposed a ban on something that is, by it’s very nature, impossible to regulate?

    Yeah, sounds about right.

  18. For the sake of deal-making, let’s agree to pass this. If the Dems agree to let us have national CCW reciprocity.

  19. How about a ban on Democrats, statists, progressives and liberals. I apologize for the many redundancies however I did not wish to leave anyone out due to mere labels.
