Here’s an idea: do NOT re-enact a defensive gun use (DGU) for the media. Everything you say and do CAN be used against you in a court of law. If not a criminal court, then a civil one. Muzzle or trigger discipline much? Sorry. Don’t mean to cavil. Result.

  1. Looking down the barrel of a shotgun, even in a video, makes me feel slightly uncomfortable. Hopefully that camera guy wasn’t actually standing infront of it.

  2. Gotta love an upstanding citizen with a shotgun. Notice the “prison art” on the perp. Not his first time in trouble but he was smart enough not to fvck with the shotgun.

  3. When I have a fellow shooter over, much less media types, I unload anything for show and tell before I bring it to my living room. It looks like he brought it out loaded and racked out rounds for the camera. Sorry, that just irks me to no end.

  4. Shotguns, a poor choice for home defense. If you watch 1:40 – 1:45 you can see he short strokes the shotgun, or that it has a feeding problem. The last time he cycles the action, a round is not ejected even though you can see one still in the magazine.

  5. In spite of the drawbacks of a shotgun (deafening blast, tons of recoil, awkward for home defense with a long barrel), their intimidation factor certainly exceeds all other guns. Of course they are excellent for stopping just about anything from rabbits to grizzly bears with proper ammunition. They are probably the most versatile gun in existence.

  6. I mean, I guess the media made him look like a good gun owner. With that being said most of us guns owners are watching this with our palms in our faces when he’s unloading, point the barrel around infront of the camera, AND when his finger is on the trigger..

  7. Let’s not be to judgemental on this man while he enjoys his 15 minutes. I believe that this report is an overall win for honest gun owners. How often do we see anything but negatives splashed across the news about us?

  8. Although his handling of the gun was awful, how often does a gun story like this get positive coverage in the media? This was a cringe-inducing display to many here, but on the whole positive coverage of a DGU is a good thing.

  9. Glad that guy was there to protect those women. Just sad to think that the loser perp will be back on the streets before you know it…

  10. Good on him for stepping in and protecting his neighbours. Now, perhaps it would be a good idea for his local gun club to extend an invitation to shoot a few rounds with them. It would be an opportunity for him to learn how to handle that shotty from people who know it well.

  11. Yeah, the gun safety stuff bothered me too, but I simply have to assume that they triple-checked that sucker before doing the camera work.

My takeaway from this is that the story was written from a “good guy” perspective, which is a good thing. It’s like an ad targeted at criminals: “This is what the business end of a shotgun looks like. Stop being stupid and get a real job, or you may get to see one in person.” The guy came off as a regular good guy, too, probably a good guy to have a beer with. Even with the poor trigger discipline, he didn’t strike me as sketchy. Remember the “news story reenactor” with the Deagle a few months back? He did a good thing, too, but he didn’t come off as a regular good guy like this one. That guy made my skin crawl.

My point is, “good guy” story, news team praising his actions, “nice guy” neighbor… add these things up, and this story is an unmitigated win.

  12. They did point out that he had just bought the shotgun a few months earlier. For all we know this may be the first weapon this man has owned or used. Bottom line, he came through when it was needed.

  13. We need more of this in the media, and less “undesireables” pushing an agenda.

I think it’s outstanding that A) There are still good neighbors out there in the world willing to help a stranger in need, and B) The media is ACTUALLY willing to cover it!

Also, ironically enough, I got the blood donation ad before the video, too. lol.
