“A woman in Charleston, W.Va., may have saved her own life and the lives of many other women, as well, when she shot and killed an alleged attacker in her home last week.” That’s nothing really new. People successfully defend themselves from home invasions every day. And those doing the invading are rarely first-timers. They’re typically career criminals with a wrap sheets longer than a live rendition of ‘Free Bird‘. But as the msn.com reports, when Neal Falls showed up at the un-named woman’s home, he had “a ‘kill list,’ multiple pairs of handcuffs and a Subaru full of weapons and tools, including a shovel, knives, a bulletproof vest, a machete, bleach, trash bags, sledgehammers and axes” . . .
Falls is suspected of a series of murders of prostitutes in Nevada and Ohio. This time, however, his intended victim was able to disarm him…after initially defending herself with a garden implement.
The woman told the station that Falls, who was from Springfield, Ore., pulled a gun on her and began strangling her. She said she had a split second in which to take control of the situation.
“When he strangled me he just wouldn’t let me get any air,” she said. ” I grabbed my rake and when he laid the gun down to get the rake out of my hands, I shot him. I just grabbed the gun and shot behind me.”
Prostitution and the “escort” trade would seem to be inherently risky activities…for a variety of reasons. It’s fortunate that the woman was able to successfully defend herself from what would seem to be a very dangerous individual. And that she was able to use the proper tool for the job, rather than something she bought at Home Depot.

Fortunately, she was lucky, which in this case is far, far better than being unlucky. As Dan points out, escorting is a risky business that forces the escort to allow complete strangers into their home (or go somewhere private) which is why they are easy pickings for mass murderers. That and the fact that society doesn’t really care about them.
I’ve often wondered why pro’s don’t band together for protection or at least have some sort of plan if the wrong guy comes calling. Having a gun would seem to be better than a rake but I’m certainly glad things worked out well for her.

Well let that be lesson to all of us, if you don’t want your own heater used against you, don’t set it down when you are strangling escorts. Also, don’t strangle escorts. Or anyone else.
It does illustrate some of the reasons behind the best practices of concealed carry though. If you pull that gun out, you better be intent and willing to use it, and right at that moment, otherwise you are just asking for it to be taken. In this case it was the evil-doer that made that mistake, thankfully, but that is hardly relevant to the point.
(I assume he was neither intent or willing to use it, I think that is pretty likely is this particular case.)

I think one of the big take-aways here is that he didn’t use the gun in his attempt to kill her, he used his physical strength to overpower her and strangle her to near death. But she was able to use the gun to negate that physical supremacy. She certainly would be dead had she not had a tool at hand that did not require any significant physicality to use. Note the rake was not a weapon but a mere distraction.
You are completely correct. But of course the takeaway from the “other side” is that (1) yet another American has not only fallen victim to “gun violence”, but (2) was done in by having his own gun turned against him, which just shows that guns don’t make you safer. Oh, and that (3) she should have just complied, and nobody would have been hurt…(“strangled” really doesn’t count as “dead”, you know).
