A Harris County, Texas man asleep on his couch early Tuesday morning awoke to two armed home invaders breaking down his door, but he wasn’t about to go down without a fight. Upon entry, the two thugs immediately started shooting. That’s when . . .

the resident grabbed his handgun and started shooting back. He fired a total of 10 rounds, which was more than enough to send the bad guys running back to their getaway car.

The armed intruders fired back on their way out, but luckily missed their target. Three children and a woman were also at the residence at the time of the attempted home invasion. No one at the residence was hurt.

The family is said to have recently moved into the house, and no motive was clear as to why the armed men targeted them.

    • 10 shots?

All he needed to do was fire 2 shots off his balcony Biden-style. You wouldn’t want those home invaders getting hurt on your property & filing lawsuits…

      • Useless advice. Unless it’s an upper story apartment many Texas homes are single level and do not have a balcony. (/sarc)

  1. See! Nobody needs more than 10 rounds to defend themselves! 🙂 And I go along with checking out the previous residents.

    • I saw 10 and Immediately wondered why he couldn’t have put another in the ground or something, just for the S&Gs of it. It took 11 see!

      • He could have been using a 45 and emptied a magazine. SR45, p227, p220 (ext mag) or 1911 with ext mag. all hold 10 rounds. I would think being fired upon by intruders that I would continue to pull the trigger until the gun was empty.

      • He did, according to the article: The suspects fled, “the resident chased after them and the shootout continued as the suspects sped off.”

  2. Maybe they thought their good stuff would still be in boxes and easily taken. Boy were they wrong! Too bad all of the scumbags got to rob another day instead of assuming room temperature.

    • My 2 cents, they like to pull data from high crime areas. So, LA, Chicago, NJ, NY, D.C. ect…. AND they are still RIGHT and WE are wrong! mostly cause in those areas the citizens are already disarmed, so DGUs don’t happen. Big plus is the gang wars add to the dead “children” statistics too.

    • Perhaps, but if you saw the house I live in, you may think there are exceptions. Without an APC or dump truck or some explosives, no one gets into my house uninvited. 🙂 Lets say the previous owner liked his privacy.

    • Regarding those of us who advocate for home carry, this event gives us something to think about:

In their home many people carry a snubnose revolver with a 5-round cylinder or a sub-compact pistol like a Taurus TCP or Ruger LCP because they are light and you can even carry them in the pocket of pajama or sweat pants. When asked about their limited capacity, people often respond that such handguns have enough capacity for most encounters or at least those handguns have enough capacity to buy the homeowner enough time to access a firearm with more stopping power (e.g. a shotgun or rifle).

This event seems to suggest that strategy could have been fatal for the homeowner. In fact it could have been fatal for the homeowner even if the homeowner had the ever popular 1911 pistol in .45 ACP with their standard 7-round magazine.

My takeaway is to carry something with at least a 13 round capacity in the home — and quite possibly even carry a spare magazine.

      • I’ve thought the same thing – we’re used to thinking of home as the “safe zone” where you don’t need to carry what you would in the street. Probably smarter to think of it as the “safer” zone but never totally safe, and with home invasions involving multiple attackers on the rise, it’s time to rethink the LCP in the bathrobe pocket. Home or away I always have at least one spare mag on my person.

        • “Probably smarter to think of it as the “safer” zone but never totally safe,”

I’d say that’s a good way to put it no matter what “zone” refers to: Neighborhood, shopping area, home, school, whatever.

      • This is why I just keep carrying my regular OC weapon, a 1911 with an eight rnd. Mag and one in the chamber and two 10 rnd mags on my belt until I go to bed.

I’ve got to the point where I barely feel the weight on my belt after seven years of daily carry.

      • Pajama carry! The holy grail…

My Springfield XDm (13 rounds of 9mm in the compact package, 19 w/full-size) is a sweet multipurpose unit, but I dream of someday having a backup gun that’s light enough to carry even when I’m in my skivvies.

    • And a stronger front door, perhaps? The few seconds a stronger door will purchase might give someone just enough time to get better armed.

  3. Shannon and Bloomberg must be seething with rage that this innocent citizen was able to defend his life against a duo of their supporters.

      • The way the invaders came in hot like that: multiple people, shooting from the start, sounds like full time, hard core criminals, who expected to meet and overcome armed resistance and were ok with both that and the attention it would draw. While that’s all possible any time, any place, it’s guaranteed when you’re taking down a stash house. Moreover, it’s only worthwhile when your objective is high reward, as with a drug stash house.

This has rip crew written all over it. Now, whether it was a case of mistaken identity/address, or perhaps the prior residents were into the trade, I don’t know; but the indications are that this was not at all random.

  4. Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion:

When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body.

I am just sorry the second body could not have put some cold steel into the first body (bodies).

  5. “… no motive was clear as to why the armed men targeted them.”

I can only begin to imagine what the “motive” might be … (puts on tinfoil hat and curls up into fetal position under desk)

  6. Holy crap!.. so.. yur just laying there on yur couch dozing off…. with your piece laying next to you of coarse…. and a couple of strangers kick your door in and start blasting??….. you grab yur gun and start blasting back??….Excuse me officer while i go change my shorts.. and my socks…… and throw away my shoes because you can never get shit completely out of the inside of your shoes…this is the kind of action that makes James bond such a hot item for the British.

  7. Have no fear….Mikey and Shannon will spin this to condemn the evil homeowner who chased after the two unfortunate mistaken individuals who were “just turning their lives around.”

On a more serious note – good for him being more prepared than most to defend his home and family. But – a little bit shakier ground chasing them out and firing on them as they drove off, if the media report is correct:

“The resident ran after them and the shootout continued as the suspects sped off. “

    • It’s Texas, so since the victim was following them out the door to ID the get away vehicle for police, and was still taking fire he was legally justified in returning fire since he and his family were still in danger. At least that what I think happened.

  8. I’ll guess the house was formerly occupied by a prior associate of the home invaders. That they entered and fired implies payback over a previous disagreement.

You have to remember that contrary to Hollywood’s assertion that criminals never target the wrong person or address because of their infallible intelligence (supposedly superior to most law enforcement and intelligence agencies), most criminals have extremely bad and often outdated information that result in the wrong premises being targeted because the previous tenant moved on. And the police intel is hardly better because is often relies on information from crooks as well.

  9. I have a rifle of the night that sits within arms reach. Tonight’s rifle is my VZ58. When I go to bed the Tavor comes out and sits next to my bed stand which is inches away from me with a 40 round PMAG. Glad this guy was prepared.
