“Police said the homeowner heard a noise inside his residence and shot a man, later identified as 33-year-old Deyfon Pipkins, aka BJ, as he climbed through the window.” So reports nbcdfw.com. Not that BJ’s demise surprised those who know knew him best. “Pipkins mother, Catherine, said she had been called to the scene by her daughter-in-law and said the crime sounded like something her son would do.” . . .

Another successful home defense brought to you by an armed citizen. Oh, and this one happened at 3:30p on Monday afternoon in the Dallas neighborhood of Oak Cliff. If you’ve been reading our DGUTD’s, you’ll have noticed that a disturbing number of these happen in broad daylight. On weekdays. When burglars like the late Mr. Pipkins expect most people to be at work.

Of course, BJ was probably unaware that Monday was a national holiday for a lot of folks. Two words: home carry.

    • That’s probably because most homeowners in that area are not home during those hours. The “hot” property crime rate is 9% nationally. If you ever wonder why…

      • And it’s much higher in Britain and other disarmed countries because the crooks want the wallets, purses, safe combinations, pointers to the jewelry, etc, that only come from defenseless houses.

A lot of things I think I would like about living in Britain, but the idea that not only are you not allowed to shoot burglars inside your home, but you can also be charged with excess defense, is something up with which I will not put. How they can tolerate the political wisdom which says you have to stand by and watch while burglars ransack your home is beyond me.

        • Felix,

Actually, the “occupant(s) present” rate of burglary in the UK is about 20%, and burglary’s dropped by nearly half in the last ten years, so we’re not doing too badly.

Also, in the last few years there’s been a public shift in attitude: while the “you can go to jail if you hurt the burglar’s feelings” has always been exaggerated, these days you need to do something disproportionate to be charged.

There may, or may not, be some causative link involved…

        • Yeah, the home invasion/hot burglary rate in rural Idaho is somewhere less than 2%. The SUCCESSFUL hot burglary rate in rural Idaho is around 0.01%.

  1. BJ? Was he the catcher or the pitcher? Must of spent his fair share of time in the slam to get that handle. Mr. BJ, meet Mr. Hollowpoint. He solves a lot of societies ills.

    • I think here in enlightened Southern California we have to sit down with a neutral mediator, discuss our feelings, determine why the guy wanted in and what we can do to help them, then shake hands and part ways as friends. It’s called the My Castle Can Also Be Your Castle Doctrine.

    • Wait, I thought you were supposed to run out onto the porch and fire your double-barreled shotgun into the air, as a warning? This guy did it all wrong!

      • Awesome. I do it even when I’m feeling just a little paranoid. I read in the newspaper that there was a rash of burglaries in my area, so I felt threatened, so I went outside and fired off both barrels on my dubblebarrulled shotgun. The police came and asked me why I did it. I told them that I was just doing what the Vice President of the United States of America said I should do, but then the cop pointed out that the paper I’d been reading was 3 weeks old. I laughed sheepishly and said that I still felt kinda paranoid anyways, so I was justified. Then I showed him a pack of Mentos while flashing a mischievous smile. This caused him to laugh and wag his right index finger at me, as if to say,”Ohh you sneaky devil! You got away with it this time, but you’d better watch yourself, cause I’ll be watchin’ you!”

    • “Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn’t we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? ‘Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we’d all be put on K.P.”

      😉

Oh and…”He was trying to turn hisself around and straighten up”…

Sure, as evidenced by his slack ass crawling through someone’s window to steal shit.

  2. I feel sorry for the mother, totally agree with the shoot though. Too many innocents have been killed to care about a guy that made a wrong choice. Randy

  3. Some said on the news (family and friends) that he should have been given a second chance or a warning or something besides just being shot. Never mind that this “BJ” had a record 18 pages long for this and other crimes that he had even spent jail time for.

I belive he ran out of chances on Monday.

      • I live about 45 minutes from there and it was on the local news for 2 days. The officer that talked to the news at the location that the home owner was completely within his rights to defend himself and his property with deadly force. All with a matter of fact attitude, not condescending about Texas castle law. The home owner had been broken into multiple times and decided to arm himself, successfully at that.

  4. I actually oppose captial punishment by the state (because they get it wrong too often), but when a private citizen uses deadly force against an evildoer caught in the act, I have no problem with that.

  5. We had 2 attempted break-ins last year. My wife was lucky to be awake at the time since she works nights and sleeps during the day. She started going to the range with me after the first attempt.

  6. Now, as I once heard a judge in North Carolina say during a criminal trial: “When your MOMMA says you’re guilty, YOU’RE GUILTY!”

  7. I find the quote from the mother very telling:

“Yeah, it’s something he would do … Somebody called me and said my son got shot that’s the reason I’m standing here…”

OK, if news of your son a) breaking into someone’s house in broad daylight and b) his getting shot dead as a result does not surprise you… you failed as a mother.

If I had ever done anything remotely like breaking into someone’s house, the last people that would have worried me would have been a) the homeowner, or b) the cops, no matter how many guns they were packing.

No, people with guns would not have worried me, because the pains of hell would have been coming for me, and that pain would have answered to the name “Mom.” She would have whipped me senseless with a belt and then, having exhausted the pain potential of leather, would probably have sent me into the swamp to cut down a willow stick.

    • “OK, if news of your son a) breaking into someone’s house in broad daylight and b) his getting shot dead as a result does not surprise you… you failed as a mother.”

Now you know that ain’t right. There’s some of us that, no matter what our momma’s do, we just do wrong.

I’m one such person. I’ve had to learn everything in my life the hard way.

That wasn’t because my mother taught me wrong, but because I made the wrong decisions.

Just because you’ve lead a life of purity doesn’t mean we all have or that we who haven’t lead the same life as you are somehow deserving of instant death. He got what he deserved but if you’ve never had a life of hardship don’t go judging everyone who has with the same gavel.

    • Really, saying she failed as a mother is tantamount to saying it’s the mother’s fault. So much for personal responsibility and the perp’s right to make his own choices then.

  8. In SC we dont get advice like “wait til they are inside and evaluate the threat”. However, it might have been prudent to give Deyfon an opportunity to extricate himself but then again Im sure we saved a shitton of tax dollars not incarcerating and rehabilitating Deyfon down the road.

  9. In Texas if you put up a no trespass sign and someone wanders in it’s a legal shooting. Again for less than a dollar this homeowner saved the taxpayer 40k a year!!!!
