It’s been a good week for gun-toting grannies. First there was Fannie Mae Brown and her .38. Now comes Lulu Campbell who, as she tells macon.com, is always packing heat. Then again she’s not the kind of granny who splits her time between quilting bees and church socials. She owns gas stations and convenience stores and, you’d assume, handles a fair amount of cash. She was sitting in her car in her daughter’s driveway when two dirtbags came a-knockin’ . . .
She’d just dropped off her grandson and was looking for her cell phone.
(T)wo men carrying guns approached her. One of them, later identified by police as Brenton Lance Spencer, 32, started to shout at her through the front passenger door to open the vehicle up and give him her money. The other, whom Macon police have identified as Dantre Horatio Shivers, 30, stood in front of the truck, also pointing a gun.
“(Spencer) shouted, ‘Give me the f—— money and open the f—— door!’ ” Campbell said. “I said, ‘Oh my God, somebody is going to rob me.’ I said, ‘Baby, you’re going to kill me anyway, so I don’t have to open it!’ ”
Campbell said she reached for her .38-caliber revolver just as Spencer allegedly fired at her. She felt Spencer’s bullet whiz by her chest as she fired back. Her shot hit Spencer in the chest.
“I hurt my back (pushing the seat back to avoid the shot),” she said. “I saw the guy in front of me, and I said, ‘Oh my God, there are two of them.’ I said I’m going to take one of them with me. That’s what was in my head.”
Turns out the two were regular customers. No problem knocking over an old lady carrying a wad of greenbacks, right? Well, not so much. That granny’s ex (a former cop) and her son (military intelligence) taught her how to shoot. So despite ducking and shooting wildly, she managed to puncture Spencer. Shivers assessed the situation and decided to beat feet.
Campbell, as it turns out, is no range queen. She’s shot at people before. Once at an earlier stick-up man (she missed) and then at her ex and his floozie (a two-fer).
Some 35 years ago, she shot her husband and his mistress after catching them together.
However, no charges were filed against her.
“After that, my husband said ‘I wish I didn’t teach you how to shoot!’ ” she said.
Brenton Lance Spencer can probably relate.
There is only one mistake I could possibly use to quaterback this event:she verbally challenged the scumbag at the window.Not that scumbags deserve to be coddled,but if I face an armed robber ill be feigning cooperation while my hand reaches for the gun.
The only MMQ I would do is say that she should have come up with a better action-hero one-liner. Maybe “Dis time, da customer is wrong” with a Schwarzenegger accent? I take that back, she did great in the moment, I can’t think of anything better while sitting in the comfort of my office without two thugs pointing guns at me.

This is the type of person who has no business owning a gun and who gives the gun grabbers a convenient argument for outrageous regulations. Adultery doesn’t carry a death sentence and I would seriously question her judgment if she’s blasting away in these types of situations.

I agree with him and I’m pretty darn pro-gun myself. Not that that particular gun-grabbing would be good, just that it gives the gun-grabbers some support.
Then again, this was a woman shooting at a man (and another woman), so I suppose the left wouldn’t have much of a problem with it.
What “gives the gun-grabbers some support” is when “pretty darn pro-gun” people compromise the principles of liberty for temporary safety.

Great reply. Stopping the gun-grabbers begins at home. The only people worse than the gun-grabbers are those who want to take people’s guns in order to try to prevent the “real” gun-grabbers from saying something mean.
I’m not a gun grabber and have argued rather publicly that the 2nd Amendment at a minimum preserves for the people the right to keep and bear the exact same firearms that civil police have. I’m supportive of constitutional carry and oppose arbitrary regulations.
That being said – this woman concedes that she committed 2 counts of attempted murder / aggravated battery and assault by pointing. She should be a violent felon, but likely escaped charges for no reason other than because of her gender and because one of the victims of the crime did not want to be called out (and likely lose his job) when it became public that he was having an affair.
I guess you missed that the incident with her ex occurred when she was living in the Philippines.

How so? She commited a crime 35 years ago. Should she be forever barred from being able to defend herself? She’s obviously alive because of it. She’s a productive member of society and a small business owner. I don’t hear you calling for her right to vote or her protection from unreasonable searches and seizures being removed because she once broke the law.
The article says she was not charged so she has never committed a crime.
Probably she wasn’t charged because she was a cop. LEOs are well known for getting their crimes swept under the rug.
From my reading of the linked article, unless she has had multiple ex’s, the only cop was in front of the muzzle, not behind the trigger.

This is the type of person who has no business commenting on who is fit and proper to own a gun. How many hundreds of thousands of permit requests were denied by the police in the past for exactly this stated reason?
Thirty-five years have passed since she shot at her husband and his girlfriend. Do you think people can change over the course of thirty-five years? She now owns and runs multiple businesses, spends time with her grandkids, and fights back when someone tries to rip her off.
Or should we apply the RKBA only to “proper” people? Do we just switch from asking the police if we can have a permit to asking someone else?
She is Filipina and this is perfectly legal in the Philippines. Trust me, I’ve long understood my options don’t necessarily include a divorce if my lovely pinoy wife catches me in bed with another lady. 🙂
In some states a “crime of passion” doesn’t get prosecuted. Not saying that i totally agree with that, but it’s the law in some places.
Opps, I see now that she shot her husband in the Phils. Yeah, they do things differently over there. There is no divorce, and cheating spouces are not thought of very highly. Adultery can still get you tossed in jail if you are flagrant about it.
Just because you’ve made mistakes in the past doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to self defense – or might need to use it. If we can’t trust her with a gun, keep her in prison. If she’s out and walking the street, she’s just as likely to run into scumbags as the rest of us. And she did. I, for one, am just a tiny bit safer now because she was carrying a gun, and got two violent criminals off the street.
Also, it looks like a Tundra’s built well enough to stop a .380. Nice work, Toyota. And now you know why the Secret Service carries .357 SIG.

Way to go Woman. She is definitely hard core. Although she needs to keep quiet about her armaments. In the macon.com article linked to to this story she says she always keeps a gun on her person, in her car and at each of the 8 convenience stores she owns. Always remember opsec.

My wife is a Filipina, and I have spent quite some time in the Philippines. It’s a very different culture. I applaud this ladies guts and work ethic and I am glad she wasn’t hurt in the shoot out. Definitely a good ad for Toyota trucks.
Now you know if she had run over the BG she would have been. Barged with vehicular homicide or some other such crap!!!!!
Instead she doesn’t have to worry about that BG anymore and she doesn’t have to replace a bunch of parts on her truck or hire someone to clean a glob of BG guts out of the grill!!!
