“My son, trying to defend his home and himself, he discharged my firearm, striking one of the suspects.” Suspects? Why the cop-speak? Well, because Ken Patmon is a Houston cop himself. His 18-year-old son was home alone Wednesday afternoon. After a knock at the front door went unanswered, two doods decided to let themselves in through the back door. The kid got on the phone with his father, then he got a gun . . .

“‘This is our home, and he’s my son,’ Patmon said. ‘If I’m not there to protect him, we try to teach our children to do what’s right, and I just thank God that he’s OK.'” That’s more than can be said for one of the two home invaders who’s now certifiably dead. The other lit out for parts unknown.

The sheriff’s treating it as a justifiable shoot. “It’s unfortunate that a life was taken, but at the same time, it’s very fortunate that this guy had a way to defend himself,” a neighbor said. Not to mention that the kid had access to a gun and was prepared to use it.

    • A minor can legally have a beer in Texas if he/she is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. They don’t have to serve a minor but many restaurants will. My son had his first legal beer at 16 served up at the Big Texan in Amarillo.

      • I did not know that about Texas alcohol law.

That’s flippin’ brilliant! Ease them into it so that they’ll have a good handle by the time they can purchase.

        I like that a lot.

  1. Man I wish MSM would publish this kinda stuff nation wide so that maybe people other than gun nuts ( POGN) would see this

    • If they did, it’d probably be with the disclaimer that it was a cop’s son, and therefore better trained by osmosis, and you should still absolutely NOT try this at home.

  2. Nicely done!

Well, technically 18 is an adult, even if that is an arbitrary number. The reason I say that is due to the fact that I am preparing firearm access for my stepson once he turns 18 next year. I’d like to set him up now, but I think he needs more maturity and practice.

    • Probably not, it was in his home. There would and should be some investigation but not all self defense gets tried for murder. Before people jump on me for saying should be an investigation, we don’t know if said 18 year old had any history with dead bad guy.

    • Jeh “getting off only because dads a cop…
      huh? based on what information?

Thought experiment for you if you can handle it:
Remove all reference to cop here. Pretend its the plumbers son who calls his dad who reminds him what he’s tayghg him about firearms and self-defense. Still think the kid deserves 20 yrs for shooting an armed intruder that has been poundinv on doors to get in?

      • arghhh. fat fingering little buttons on mobile plus sticking edit function…correction to my last: the news does NOT say armed intruders and we can only infer they were threatening seeming given they pounded on front door then went around back to ‘let themselves in’. Culligan man? Over eager Jehovahs Witness? Volunteer Firemen? So many possibilities if you start out with the assumption the County Sherif is covering for thr City Cops son. Well…that DOES seem the mindset aming more than a few here…CORRUPT COPS! Ya csnt trust a one of ’em! Swat teams dog shooters all of ’em…

    • Not in this part of the country, my friend. This is Texas, not some northeastern or west coast slave state. If the totality of the circumstances are substantially as have been reported thus far, then he’ll be in the clear. Yes, there will likely be a referral to the Grand Jury, as well there should be.

You always have to take a blank slate approach to these things. A man is dead and another man killed him. This isn’t a late night T.V. cop show where the good guys and bad guys are predefined, right there in the script. Without an investigation and examination of the evidence by a panel of disinterested Grand Jurors, it’s much easier for untoward scenarios to be whitewashed. Moreover, having official imprimatur from the Grand Jury goes a long way, in this state, toward heading off civil litigation.

We’ll have to see how the facts play out, but a few things are odd about this case. According to media reports, the father immediately claimed that the son has never fired a firearm before. Ever. Really? Son of an HPD officer, who’s planning a military career, and he’s never, ever, fired a firearm before? As peculiar as that may be, such a young man managed to effect a one-shot/one-kill on the first bad guy bearing down on him? That’s why I say “Hey man, nice shot! What a good shot, man!”; but still, it’s peculiar.

Moreover, also according to media reports, the father immediately claimed that the son has never been in trouble a day in his life and that the son definitely did not know these apparent assailants. Perhaps, but I think the father doth protest too much.

    • Haha, Obama care. When I was 26 I had two college degrees, a family, a mortgage, and I had a career with insurance. I know times are a bit rougher but were talking in less than a decade. The decay of the American dream.

      • Obamacare is a mess. I wonder, once the statists in DC finally pass it, if they’ll try to raise the age of legal firearm ownership. I imagine there are also plenty of anti-gunners breathlessly aniticipating the announcement that firearms are a public health crisis.

There. I was able to successfully tie in how much I despise Obamacare into a gun website.

        • Let us not forget the SEIU unionized ‘Navigators’ hired by the State of CA to enroll the young poor and down trodden…using the website…thats still…uh…NOT….working.

Let me see….All those exACORN rocket scientists telling people how to truthfully state their income so they will pay an accurate amount of tax i mean premium. Rather than understate it so they Dont have to pay the IRS tax I mean penalty at years end.

  3. One burglar permanently retired, another burglar who is probably looking into other kinds of work. and several others that have been reminded of the dangers of a life of crime. Nothing but good here.

In Texas, you are allowed to defend yourself and your property. No charges will be filed against the 18 year old.

  4. Another home invasion that supposedly “never happens” that gets resolved with the correct outcome. My fellow liberals are strange… face it, we’re not supposed to be the ones who are stereotyped racists… why should we not trust our fellow citizens with arms? For every evil person with a firearm, there’s an order of magnitude more good people with firearms. It’s time the ACLU supported all of the Bill of Rights… never does the word “people” belong to the “collective” group but the individual citizens. /rant

  5. Texas justice at it’s best. The other 49 should take note. They make it so complicated that justice becomes insanity.

  6. Kudos to the dad, as well. Kid showed some pretty good smarts and likely a very good aim since one of them died. I would hate for any one, especially a younger adult, to have to deal with such an event. It would have totally wigged me out at 18. I bet his family will really be there for him.

MORE – just finished the video all the way to the end. Son is about to go into the Air Force. Even more impressed with the father/family.

  7. I see this same theme repeatedly. Bad guys knock on front door. If they get no answer they go around back and attempt break in. If i’m home and somebody knocks on my door I’m going to let them know the house is occupied.

Let my non gun owning neighbers have visitors. I have a security door I can talk thru and they can’t get all grabby. If they did, I would get all shooty.

  8. “It’s unfortunate that a life was taken”

No, it’s not. Wiping out another piece of filth made the world a better place. But not to worry — there are plenty more where he came from.

  9. Officer Patmon seems like a fine dad and LEO, but he should really STFU about the details.

I’m pretty sure this lawyer would add “even if you’re a LEO you shouldn’t talk to the police”
