“Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police took a report on the incident Friday morning at Wedgewood Church,” North Carolina’s wncn.com reports. “The church’s sign along busy Tyvola Road reads, ‘Stop killing, disrespecting black people.'” Here’s the message left on the sign:

The church’s leader sent WBTV a photograph of a shotgun shell in a bag along with a note that reads, “How about the no-good gangster [racial slur] who murdered my friend’s brother and wife. Should I respect them? Should I use my next shell on your sign or the gangsters? There names and pictures are all over the news.”

The note is signed, “Concerned Citizen.”

Well, if the gangsters in question pose an imminent threat of grievous bodily harm or death to the sign writer, the answer’s easy enough. Still, anyone defacing a church’s sign in this manner is unhinged. And it isn’t the first time . . .

Last week, Ayers said someone taped several white strips of paper over the word “black.” He’s concerned about the safety of his members.

“We’re a congregation that’s interracial, about half of our congregation is LGBT. We are a congregation where people have been beaten up on by the rest of society,” said Ayers . . .

“We do have a race problem in Charlotte, in the United States, and we don’t need to put our head in the sand about it,” said Ayers.

The church plans to order a digital surveillance system in hopes of deterring future vandalism.

Yes, well, I recommend that church members take further appropriate precautions, including, but not limited to bomb surveillance and armed self-defense. Has it come to that? Truth be told, it’s always been like that.

  1. Ooow scary-a shotgun shell…scary. LGBT,IR and I’m sure pretty weird. Get some security. Or don’t. Maybe demanding respect will work…

  2. With the inclusion of that comma isn’t the sign really saying, “Stop killing, [you] disrespecting black people”? If so, Freudian slip?

    • Negative ghostrider. Without the comma, it would be a request to stop killing black people that are disrespectful.

      • Obviously the word “disrepecting” is the entire length of the board, and there was not enough room to include the understood following comma.

        • Maybe a more meaningful term than “disrespect” should have been used. What’s that even supposed to mean, anyway, as a practical matter? Respect is earned, not demanded.

        • Commas like that are usually used to separate two adjectives and two commas (the one that some would infer) would be composing a list. A simple use of the “&” symbol would make it proper.

  3. “We do have a race problem in Charlotte, in the United States, and we don’t need to put our head in the sand about it,”

Damn straight. Clearly the thing to do is post ignorant and inflammatory messages on your church sign. That’ll get it all straightened out right quick!

    • “We’re a congregation that’s interracial, about half of our congregation is LGBT. We are a congregation where people have been beaten up on by the rest of society,”

So all these people are going to this church, they are by their own admission victims of one form of discrimination or another “by the rest of society”, and they are every week, at least, praying their heart and souls out to God for relief. Perhaps they should understand that no answer to their prayers is in a fact an answer?

Or perhaps, more succinctly, “God helps those who help themselves.” Stop whining, and praying, and get some self-defense. There are too many instances in history that show absolutely that sitting in church (synagogue) praying for divine intervention is not a safe way to confront bigotry, whether religious or social.

      • Yes.

Their is the third person plural possessive adjective.

There can be used as an adverb, adjective, pronoun or noun that denotes a place, differentiates a place, emphasizes a specific person, introduces a noun or introduces a clause.

They’re is a contraction for “They are”.

They’re ticked off that their pictures are posted over there on the news bulletin.

  4. Hmmm, They probably don’t want to know who kills most black people.

I will guess they’re not big into concealed carry either.

      • It sure is a good reminder… those folks need Jesus, just as much as I do. The manner of missing the mark might be different, the result is the same.

    • It covers it. God not only allows, He commands that we defend the innocent with all legal force. See my book, “A Time To Kill: The Myth of Christian Pacifism” by Greg Hopkins.

  5. I hope that sign was a message to other black people. Statistically there are twice as many black on white homicides than there are white on black homicides.

Come on. The sign is ridiculous. They purposely make it racial, rather than race neutral. They could have said that all people need to respect each other and not kill each other. It is they that brought race into the equation. After decades of trying to take race out of it to make us equal, they purposely put it back in.

I agree that the response above with a shotgun shell is over the top, but it’s just a message to those making messages indicating that black lives matter instead of saying all lives matter.

    • ” Statistically there are twice as many black on white homicides than there are white on black homicides.”

And about 10 times as many black on black homicides as either, possibly both combined. And you meant to say “they purposely make it *RACIST*, rather than race neutral…”

  6. I thought the church was supposed to be concerned for all people. I very highly doubt they had a sign that read “Stop killing white people” or “Stop killing Asian people”. The sign should have read “Stop killing and disrespecting one another”. When the church steps in and starts taking sides, it makes it easy for me to see why people stop going.

    • And we’re supposed to be upset because somebody ‘defaced’ it by editing it to read “stop killing (and) disrespecting people”?

And if the worst threat the church faces is a potential threat to its racist sign, I’d say they’re doing pretty well.

      • Leaving a note on a sign that is posted in the public view that is an indictment of that public, is hardly defacing. It is a response. Free speech right? You tell me how you feel and if I don’t agree, I tell you how I feel. This response was not a threat. It was reminder to the church that they are not the only ones victimized by violent people. The only threat was to the dumb sign, not the congregation. Not condoning it but the person naturally was upset by the ignorance of the pastor. This sign comes straight out of the Black Lives Matter playbook, and we all know how we feel about that. I don’t cut any slack to a church. They’re going to enter the political arena? They’re going to get mud thrown at them.

    • Serious question; what makes you think churches like this one are concerned with the benefit of all mankind? Wasn’t too long ago that racist white churches openly advocated for violence, harm, and social isolation of ‘the mud races’; is it really such a leap to consider that places administered by Jeremiah Wrights or Louis Farahkans that openly denounce the leadership, contributions, and even presence of people who happen to be white, might –as signage like this clearly and boldly declares– really not give a damn about anyone whose skin is white?

      • “Wasn’t too long ago that racist white churches openly advocated for violence, harm, and social isolation of ‘the mud races’”

Well, *you* are clearly a racist pigdog, but let’s examine your accusation of *me*. “Wasn’t too long ago”? How about 100+ years? Got a source proving something more recent? I didn’t think so. Take your racist bullshit elsewhere, it is not welcome here.

  7. See, if Concerned Citizen hadn’t used the N word, his note would have been okay (not from an English composition standpoint, but hey).

If the church hadn’t discounted the lives of everybody but black people with their sign, that would have been okay. Again, not so grammatically hot, but whatever.

As it is, they’re all assholes.

      • The shotgun shell, “helped” as well (let’s not be cute; if anything was ‘threatening’ the shell was much more so than any of that third-grader scribble). I’m still thinking this one’s a hoax, solely due to recent history of stories of this type consistently being hoaxes.

        • I was thinking the same thing. The vast majority of these types of “hate crimes” have proven to be perpetrated by the “victims”.

The incidence of white on black violence is so rare, they have to be manufactured by the victim industry, to keep the narrative alive, and the money and special privileges accorded them due to being “victims”, rolling in.

  8. 1. Stop killing black people: most blacks are killed by blacks.
    2. Stop disrespecting black people: Start respecting yourselves then maybe I’ll start.

  9. Yeah, tough for me to get all bent out of shape over that sign. Numbers don’t lie.

Guy most likely to mug you or carjack you? Black. Stockbroker most likely to churn your retirement account or invest in Greek bonds? White. Person most likely to take half your stuff? Ex-wife.

  10. “Yes, well, I recommend that church members take further appropriate precautions, including, but not limited to bomb surveillance and armed self-defense.”

Good advice, but 100% certain to not be heeded. This very same sign was previously used to display the message “No one needs an AK47”, so I suspect that this church’s leadership is not too keen on armed (or unarmed, for that matter) self-defense. Some people would rather be victims than take responsibility for their own safety.

    • More like the church’s signage is directed by a “higher” power (and not the real one). Probably in deep with all sorts of charity-hustles if they’ve got both gun control AND BLM nonsense being propagandized out of there.

      • Not necessarily. Do not underestimate the number of true believers in that non-sense who willingly spew it for “the good of all.” No guidance from others needed.

  11. Odds of this being a hoax, anyone? Hate to be a jaded skeptic and all, but these tactics are becoming boringly repetitive among all the identity politics groups, to the point it has become painfully obvious that there are a lot more hoaxers than legitimately hateful (white) racists acting out. At one time pathetic cowards justified their existence by expressing violent hatred toward others; now they seem to seek justification for their existence by being seen as hated themselves. Someone check to see if this church is in financial straits or something.

“Last week, Ayers said someone taped several white strips of paper over the word “black.””
Yup, I’m calling a hoax. “White” paper, really? Your racist sign is white, what they were doing is *obscuring* a needless half-step in a message otherwise advocating peace that you inserted to hustle for racists’ dollars. I hope the next (misguided and/or idiotic) vandal replaces the word “Black” with “White,” just to see the disgusting hypocrisy from this holy man.

I am once more amused by the use of ‘respect’ with regards to race relations, since not only does it mean very different things to different people (many people misuse it when they really mean friendship, fear, or obedience), it isn’t the sort of thing you would even ‘demand’ from anybody in the first place, and expect it to be legitimately given.

  12. See, I see this differently. I see it as a spur-of-the-moment expression of anger. That’s why the note is written on the back of a manila envelope. Guy drives by, sees the sign, gets mad because of his buddy’s brother and wife, and uses what he has at hand to get his message across. Someone who takes the time to leave a note is not very likely to follow through on the threat, in my opinion.

  13. “Stop killing, disrespecting black people.”

I hope this sign was meant for other blacks, because they are doing to lion’s share of the black killing in America.

  14. I wouldn’t rule out a false-flag operation here…this seems a bit “too good to be true” and perfectly in line with recent “race crime” hoaxes, where the ‘N’ word (and nooses) figure prominently.

  15. Given the past history of such things my money says one of the upstanding black parishioners has planted this. No doubt Jesse and Al are making airline reservations and Hellary will blame Trump next time she can stand unassisted.

  16. Has demanding respect ever worked for anyone ever? Last I remember anyone demanding respect it was middle school, and it didn’t work out for those who tried to get respect that way.

    • For people who demand respect (bullies, bosses, kings, gangsters), it is code for; tribute, obedience, submission, power, fear.

  17. Very poorly worded message, it could be interpreted several different ways. Was it a message to black people to stop killing and disrespecting? Since I have no idea what the message creator was trying to convey I’ll end my comments here.

  18. My teacher told me that you can flip a sentence at the comma to test it’s validity….

    Disrespecting black people

    Comma

    Stop killing.

Still makes a kind of sense but the message is still kinda all over the place.

As for the note on the envelope….. Yeah, but no. Someone had a rough day, couple cans after work with stupid conversations about race relations at both… See stupid sign written by people who should have known better… F that I’m giving them what for with their stupid billboard.

    • A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons.

“Why?” asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

“Well, I’m a panda,” he says. “Look it up.”

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. “Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.”

Punctuation is still important, no matter what the ‘speshul snowflake’ crowd wants us to believe.

  19. The note guy is a little unhinged, but he threatened to shoot the sign, not the people. The parishioners should tool up, but they should do that anyway, not just because some yutz is pissed at the sign.

    • Respect is often demanded by those who don’t understand the need to earn it.

It’s sort of like health care.

  20. US Army, 1969. Ft Leonard Wood, MO. Black guys from Chiraq would gang up and beat the hell out of white guys. We were told to not walk around unless we were in a group.

CDC, of 11,000 murders in 2015, 8,900 were gang related.

Democratic cities are where the gun problems are, it’s not racism.

I owe my life to a black Sargent and I am no racist,

    Just sayin’

  21. Born and raised in Charlotte. I can never be down on my hometown but it has changed a lot since the ’90s. It is one of those New South cities that a ton of folks from up North and out West have moved to and want to reshape in their image. It was a former mill town that reinvented itself through banking, and when Pat was mayor was a major business Republican bastion. Fun to visit and there is a lot going on in Charlotte, but now, I wouldn’t live there. I’m afraid it is becoming one of those cities that the democrats will ruin in the name of progressivism.

  22. What I love the most about this era of Barack Obama, our second black president, is all the wonderful racial healing and reconciliation.

  23. Meh. They wanted a national conversation about race and violence. They got it. I don’t consider this a threat, just a rhetorical question. Besides, they may have posted the note themselves to gin up publicity and contributions.

Let the blacks clean up their own house by speaking out against gang violence, rather than whipping up unfounded fury and undeserved donations over police shootings of violent criminals.

  24. Yes the race “problem” is that blacks are roughly 14% of the population but commit over 50% of the crime. 75% of black children are born to single mothers.

I owe you nothing now get your shit together. I’ve been pulled over 4 times and each time drove off after a handshake and a talk. Sometimes with a ticket and sometimes with a warning. If I would have flipped my shit and attacked the cop I would have been rightfully shot.

BLM has made me less interested in listening to black Americans than ever before. Stop having kids out of wedlock, hold down a job and stop fighting with cops.

  25. “Last week, Ayers said someone taped several white strips of paper over the word “black.” ”
How dare someone try to make the sign read , Stop killing, disrespecting people. To think that some low life would try to include everyone with peace and respect.
With sarcasm switch turned off, if the pastor has a problem with that, then he’s an asshole.
