Bryan in West Virginia says this is his day off carry. His gun of choice is a Kel-Tec PF-9, a gun advertised by the company as “one of the lightest and flattest 9mm pistols ever made.” It’s a DAO – double action only – pistol which is often used on guns designed for concealed carry as an additional or stand-alone safety mechanism.

DAO does require some practice, though. If you’re ever forced to defend your life with a DAO pistol, you’d better be able to press that trigger repeatedly and accurately. Jerking the trigger or failing to execute a smooth pull throughout means your shots won’t be anywhere near as accurate, so get some practice.

And please, guys, practice under stress. Train appropriately for self-defense, not just punching paper targets on a square range.

    • I frequently carry 2 knives. Rarely, if ever, 3. Quite often I have some variant of the SAK and then either a fixed blade or stouter folder. Sometimes a multi tool and then the other type knife. Depends on activity and location.

I spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities. Hunting, fishing, gold panning, archery, etc. Frequently alone. In my 4runner and on my person I carry a complete outfit for what might happen while I’m out and about.

I still regret not buying the m95 nagants, or 3, when they were 69 bucks a piece. Perfect throw away piece that the rangers/wardens/cops could take and not hurt my feelings.

      • Given a choice, I prefer to carry enough gear to achieve neutral boyancy. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. On the back of an old Search & Rescue T shirt, “…when you die, we’ll split up your gear”. The counter T shirt, “…if your gear was any good, you’d never die.” -30-

    • The little automatic knife is for fiddling with when your sitting around and thinking.

The others are for useful tasks. Like the new benchmade.

Not so much on the PF9.

    • I feel weird that I carry four knives at least, as well as a flashlight, wallet, keys, FAK, phone, sunglasses, kimber micro 9 covert w/ lasergrips in a vedder light tuck with two extended mags with hogue rubber baseplates, one in the gun and one in a vedder magtuck. Great holsters!

  1. Only ever did this on a hot range. Start with each pistol in our preferred carry condition. Leave ’em at our shooting stations, go back and wait by our cars. Instructor would blow her whistle and we’d RUN. Pick ’em up, point and shoot at an Army “L” at seven yards. All hits in the black, but no pinwheels, lesson in humility learned, WW II, UDT demo man, “you need a knife, bring two”. A multi-tool or SAK and some useful size Benchmade, Spyderco or Tops Knives. -30-

  2. You better be able to pull any trigger consistently and accurately.

No fan of the PF 9 nit the trigger is not that bad.

I’d you learned how to shoot a glock from a glockite, then riding that reset may take a while.

I learned defensive shooting with a double action revolver and shoot all tupperware triggers the same way. Stroke through it and release…..repeat as needed.

And Kat – your verbiage is getting a little preachy and holier-than-thou. You seems to assume your readers are lazy turds. Is that what you’re going for? If so – you’re nailing it.

  3. Carry what you are confident in, proficient with and can afford.
I appreciate anyone who is willing to take steps to defend themselves.
Doesn’t negatively impact me if they use harsh language or a SAW.

  4. I prefer the DAO trigger on the first pull and a decocker, much better method than using a safety. I love my CZ Rami 2075

I also train with a CZ SP01 same set up as my carry gun, but it does take a while to learn the DA trigger. KAT is very correct, a heavy DA trigger isn’t as easy to master as a striker fired, so mine are Cajunized to improve everything about them, even still it takes practice.

  5. He needs a spare mag. The Kel Tec is a questionable choice but he certainly won’t cry over it when the cops seize it if he has to use it.

  6. The small knife is so he can fight his way to his slightly bigger knife.

The slightly bigger knife is so he can fight his way to his biggest knife.

His biggest knife, so he can fight his way to his pistol.

Pistol gets him to his car, which has his rifle.

And his rifle gets him home to where he has a small bomb.

That small bomb he uses to help him fight his way to a slightly bigger bomb….

    Remember folks, 10 is 9. 9 is 8. 8 is 7. 7 is 6. 6 is 5. 5 is 4. 4 is 3. 3 is 2. 2 is 1. And what is 1? well 1 is none….you dont want to bet your life on anything less than 14.

  7. I carried a KEL TEC PF9, ate every round but man did you feel it. Due to the unique handle ergonomics it hurt worse then 357 out of a snubby. Hindsight the 3 AT would have been a better choice
