Two 12-year-old German girls found a branch (above) hiding inside a pile of wood into which someone had inserted nine live rounds of ammunition. The woodpile was to be lit on fire during an Easter celebration the next day. The girls were climbing on the woodpile when they found the branch buried deep in the heap at a local shooting club. Shooting clubs are known for organizing Easter bonfires, which are a tradition in Germany. It was clear that someone purposely drilled the holes and placed the cartridges in them with the intention that they’d go off in the fire. Whether they intended harm or just surprising explosions is unclear. After several days of investigation, police still had no suspects. Read on for the first Lockdown of the Dayā¢ in a few days . . .
Your Lockdown of the Dayā¢ comes from San Diego, California, where the Naval Base Point Loma was locked down for about two hours on Thursday morning after a sailor waved a weapon from a sixth-floor barracks room window. The weapon turned out to be an airsoft gun, and the sailor admitted that he fired the weapon at a mirror in a parking garage. When the sailor was first sighted at about 10 a.m., all base personnel were told to stay inside and away from windows and doors. The sailor surrendered to NCIS officers around 12:30 p.m. and was taken into custody. Naval Base Point Loma is home to seven submarines, Third Fleet Command, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command and several other major units. The base has about 7,000 people on board during the day.
Magpul is introducing a couple new armorer’s tools this week. First up is the Armorer’s Wrench, made in the USA from solid steel with a grip-enhancing phosphate finish. Fits standard and pin-style barrel nuts, standard sized flash hiders, and castle nuts, with extended teeth for use with Magpul’s ASAP plates. It has a socket to accept a 1/2″ torque wrench, and torque specs are engraved on the body of the wrench for reference. $79.95 from Magpul.com. The second new tool is the BEVā¢ Block, a vise block for AR assembly that has a steel interface for engaging the barrel extension, so the torque of installing barrel nuts and flash hiders is distributed to the strong barrel rather than just a slot in the aluminum receiver. The rest of the block is made of polymer so it won’t damage the softer aluminum of the receiver. Price is still TBD.
New York City is getting picky about who will be allowed to buy the NYPD’s spent brass shell casings and recovered lead from now on. Often the stuff goes to scrap dealers, but two years ago the winning bidder for more than 28,000 pounds of spent brass was our friends over at Georgia Arms. Georgia Arms is a major reloader and seller of once-fired ammunition, which the New York Times points out they then sell “to the public, no questions asked.” The article then points out that what makes the transaction even worse is that it occurred right around the time of the Aurora, CO theatre shooting. Never miss a chance to wave the bloody shirt, right? Anyway, the picky part. This time around, NYC has more than 67,000 pounds of brass for sale (which could be converted into “millions of bullets” according to the NYTimes), but not so fast, Georgia Arms. This time, bidders must be metal recyclers. They must sign an affidavit stating that the metals āmay not be reused for reloading purposes under any circumstancesā and āshall be recycled in such a way that they shall be rendered useless for reloading purposes under any circumstances.ā

I actually wouldn’t doubt that 67,000 pounds of brass could make a million rounds of ammo. That’s a LOT of brass. What’s one empty case weigh? If there’s 200 to a pound (and it’s probably a lot more than that) then that’s over a million rounds right there.
Except it doesn’t say “millions of rounds of ammunition” or “millions of cartridges”. It says “millions of bullets”, a dead giveaway that the writer doesn’t know shit about how ammo works, or what the reloading process actually entails. The retard probably thinks they’re melting down the casings and molding them into bullets.
To be fair, there are brass bullets out there. They’re generally not that same alloy, but that can be changed after the smelting process.

So, if you want to cripple a Navy Base and, oh, I don’t know, take control of some submarines (and we all know there is no one in the world who would want to do that….), just wave an airsoft gun out of a window. Then, move in with a small, lightly armed team (most of the personnel will be locked in wherever they are), take out what little resistance you’d encounter, and take control of the armory. Voila! You now have control of a US Navy base, with minimal casualties and only a handful of shots fired. Congratulations!

Usually, when a round goes off in a fire, The case is the thing that shoots out, as it is lighter than the bullet.
Also the velocity is somewhat low because the case and bullet are separated from each other before the gas can reach a substantial pressure. This of course, because the case is not surrounded by steel.
However, in this case, from what I see in the photo, the cases are mostly surrounded by wood, which would enable the pressure to probably reach a greater level before releasing the bullet. And of course with the wood being heavier, I would imagine the case would stay where it’s at, and the bullet would be the one taking flight. The fact that it’s pointed on the receiving end, instead of being blunt, means there would be a higher probability of a serious injury.
Wood =/= steel. Also, the case head is quite exposed. The case will fail before the projectile.
Would the lead bullet melt before the powder would ignite? Serious question. I understand the pressure issue with cartridges in a fire but have often wondered if anything would be left of the bullet at the time of ignition.

All things being equal, would you risk your own safety by throwing such a thing into a fire and standing around waiting for the bang? Even if the projectile(s) weren’t launched with significant velocity the compressed explosion would be fairly directional as opposed to a round lying loose in the fire.

Are you sure the case would fail? Seems to me the weak link is the crimp on the bullet. Wouldn’t that give way before the case ruptured, sending the bullet off? Obviously, it’s not going to have the same velocity as a round fired from a gun, but a hefty chunk of hot metal at even a few hundred fps is not something I’d want to be standing in front of.
As a test, I once took a handful of .38 Special reloaded rounds with cast lead bullets and put them in a coffee can (back when they were really cans) and set them on a bed of coals within a 55 gal. drum, then got back quickly. After having heard the appropriate number of “pops” I checked out the results. Some had primers blown out of the pockets and bullet intact, the rest either had split cases or simply the bullets and cases separated. The can was not damaged in the least. No animals were injured as a result of this experiment āŗ.
Yeah, unsupported cases will rupture. But the rounds in question here, jammed into holes drilled in the log, might have enough support to keep the case from splitting, is what I’m thinking.

The funny thing is that destroyed brass cases can still be recycled into brass cases. they just added a couple of unnecessary, expensive and energy intensive steps to do so. It made them “FEEL” good though, so I guess it’s worth it.

I’ve been reading a lot of comments lately about how bad I am too, and of course the BMs (Bloombergs Mayors and Bloombergs Moms) have just released their ad telling me that I am responsible for the injuries of people I’ve never met.
I always thought that the “I’m the NRA” ads were good ones. There was also a television ad put out a while back that showed ordinary Americans. In it, they explained what they did in their day to day lives and revealed that they were concealed carriers. I’m not sure who did it. It was well done and put a face to the people that are being demonized. We need more of that, and theses ads need to be placed in the mainstream media channels, not where they will preach to the choir.
