Democrats are absolutely livid over the concept that the Republicans in Congress are so staunchly opposed to funding Planned Parenthood that they are willing to shut down the government rather than continue to see their tax dollars getting spent on abortions. The idea that someone could be so firm in their convictions is apparently beyond their comprehension. Andrew Cuomo (Democrat and governor of New York) sees things a little differently. In his opinion, Democrats should be pushing just as hard for the “nuclear option” of politics as the Republicans, but for a different reason: gun control. Unable to push his agenda any other way, Cuomo is asking the Democrats to resort to holding the entire U.S. government hostage in order to push through proposals that lack any factual basis and which the majority of Americans do not want.

From the Daily News:

He also called upon his fellow Democrats in Congress to shut down the government until they get an iron-clad national gun control law passed.

“If the far right is willing to shut down the government because they don’t get a tax cut for the rich, then our people should have the same resolve and threaten to shut down the government if they don’t get a real gun control law to stop killing of their innocents,” he said.resolve and threaten to shut down the government if they don’t get a real gun control law to stop killing of their innocents,” he said.

Cuomo failed to indicate exactly what specific gun control legislation he wanted to see enacted. He also failed to realize that the laws he continues to allude to wanting on a national level are already in place in the city, county, and state of New York, and failed to stop the killing of his staff member which he is now using as an example of why these laws need to be enacted.

  1. Make him explain how the laws would work to prevent these deaths. Make him back up these ludicrous claims. Ask him why the same laws at state level haven’t been able to slow, let alone stop, the violence he cries.

And drive home his failure to make the case, every chance you get.

    • “cries” should be “decries”.

Y’all ought to get the comment editor fixed; it’s fairly annoying to randomly not be able to edit a comment. And it’s happening more and more regularly.

    • I say let them shut down the government. Nothing would be better designed to hand a supermajority and the White House to the GOP.

      • I’m all for a government shutdown , Parks , NSA , Medicare SSI , ATC , EPA , FBI , CIA , Federal employees , Post office would have to continue and all Constitutional cited government , i.e. Military , and everything else can go , lets see what our real priorities are and reboot . I’ll take care of my family while we reboot , you take care of yours and I’ll help the real needy and the ones who are sacrificing all their toys to survive . The US Constitution must be amended to ban gun ownership and I see nothing in the Constitution that sets a priority of adult female rights over riding the unborn fetus’ rights .
Isn’t Cuomo Italian ? Aren’t most Italians Catholic ? Isn’t Cuomo a Catholic ? Aren’t Catholics anti abortion ? Isn’t killing a baby wrong ? Wouldn’t it be better to have a millstone tied about your neck and be tossed into the sea than to murder an innocent baby ( fetus ) ?

        • I agree. I’d support any member of Congress who wants to shut-down the Federal government on any pretext. The longer it’s shut down the more clear it will be to the public that we can get along just fine withOUT much of what the government does to us.

I’m sympathetic to, e.g., families who may have planned a trip to Yellowstone. There are lots of things that the President would shut-down because it wants to do as much as it can to make the public feel-the-pain in conspicuous ways. That too is educational.

It would be especially valuable if the shut-down were about something important out of principle vs. politics. Planned-Parenthood, the RKBA, speech, etc. Not whether the DoD or Department of the Interior gets a few billion more or less.

          GAME ON!

        • Same here. Bring it.

I’m a big proponent of what I (and surely someone else before me) call the Snow Day Budget for public employees.

If your federal position is of such priority that you’re allowed/required to stay home on heavy snow days, then we don’t need you. Go ahead and stay home every day and we’ll reduce the budget accordingly.

        • Shutting down the federal government is fine.
My question is how do we prevent them from opening it back up again?

      • Indeed he can, which is to say he can always lie.

Of the 4,585 firearms recovered at NY state crime scenes and traced in 2014, roughly a third (1,397) originated in New York itself. NY itself is the single largest source of crime guns recovered in NY and traced. How can he blame other states’ laws for that?

Furthermore, if “lax” out of state gun laws are to blame for NY’s recovered crime guns, then how does Cuoma explain the fact that more crime guns recovered in NY originated in strict Connecticut (59) than in “lax” Vermont (55)?

Hell, some NY crime scene guns have been traced to Guam. Guam! They’re some 8,000 miles away, in the middle of the ocean, living in a grabber’s paradise, and still the guns come in.

Really makes you think that it’s not about guns at all.

        • He is the son of a millionaire. He is the product of privilege and a protected life. He is spoiled on power and used to ordering people around and getting what he wants, and has become a bully after years of doing it. He does not champion freedom, and has no respect for the constitution, because the constitution limits power. This proposal to use leverage and force is his way to get what he wants. He is a threat to a free society.

        • He’s an evil hateful lying troll. He poisoned his rich famous girlfriend; after years of regular carnal injections of liberal poison, she comes down with cancer. Proof that liberal, statism rots a person from the inside out. Just ask Sandra Lee

      • And when federal laws are enacted he’ll say they’re not good enough. And if we somehow adopted a complete “no gun” law he’d complain that we need to do more house to house searches, because there’s still “gun violence.” And then… I don’t know, invade Mexico and Canada?

“Slippery Slope” may be called a logical fallacy at times but it’s clearly evident here.

    • But he did he did! He says that the SAFE Act has protected New Yorkers from evil guns there, but it is the evil illegal immigrant guns from out of state that are sneaking across the border and causing these horrific crimes. It MUST have been, because the SAFE Act is wonderful! (This despite the fact that neither the shooter nr the gun have been located, and further despite the fact that the gun man is reportedly between the ages of 19 and 20 and thus not legally permitted to buy a gun.) And THAT’s why we need national gun control! To close the loopholes, barricade the doors and windows and stop this evil plague of guns from descending on the peaceful citizens of New York! See?

  2. Shutting down the government to save children’s lives?
The irony is palpable, But since the majority of Planned Parenthood’s victims are minority the Democrats have no problem with it.

    • You do realize that Planned Parenthood is barred from using tax dollars to perform abortions, right? Has been for years in fact. Instead, this his nothing but a ploy by the right wing of the Republican Party to shut down Planned Parenthood and therefore make it more difficult for women to obtain such services, and all of the other women’s health services it provides to poor women, including pelvic and breast examinations and screenings for cancer.

      • ‘You do realize that Planned Parenthood is barred from using tax dollars to perform abortions, right?’

See the comment by Tex300BLK below and the replies.

‘…make it more difficult for women to obtain such services, and all of the other women’s health services it provides to poor women, including pelvic and breast examinations and screenings for cancer.’

Except PP doesn’t actually perform any of those services. All they’ll do refer women over to real health care clinics. Even if they did perform such services that’s like arguing that without Hitler there wouldn’t be an Autobahn or Volkswagen. They’re murdering a million children every 3 years!

      • You do realize that, yes, dollars are indeed fungible, right? You also realize that Kathleen Sibelius was lying through her teeth about PP providing mammograms and such, right? She’s probably still lying about it somewhere right now. You do realize that PP calls everything that they do incident to performing an abortion a separate “service” so they can claim that abortions count for only a small percentage of the “services” they perform, right? PP is a blood-merchant founded by a proto-Nazi intent on weeding out inferior races. Not to mention being a crass enabler of statutory rapists.

  3. What is beyond me is how we elected two groups of children who are willing to shut down government to score political points, which will end in massive toothless compromise rather a) not trying something so stupid in the first place or b) compromise first.

Of course neither side are committed enough for a full shutdown, so 70% of the federal government with still be operational (including all big spending departments) it will just be the stuff that effects the little people. Politicians will still magically have a fund available to cover all expenses during that difficult time.

    • Cuomo is a douche and nobody likes him

The difference is he is one guy who is not in congress versus every republican that has actually contributed to shutting down the goverment

And some of the ideas here are a little fringey. Do people really think national parks and vacations are the most important functions and it would have all been fine otherwise?

How bout Katrina? Was that fine? Bobby jindal saying people could all pitch in and do rescues, untrained and unresourced?

  4. Cuomo, once again as ever, should always be ignored. He is terrible to both Republicans and his own party. Much like Bloomberg he seems to be hated by everyone anywhere on the political spectrum and yet holds office.

  5. Definition of stupid~ doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Did N.Y. state laws prevent this killing?

Let’s do the same on a national level.

    • “Definition of stupid~ doing the same thing and expecting different results.”

If you are claiming that Governor Cuomo is stupid, I beg to differ. Shouting “gun control!” from the rooftops got him elected … and he expects the same battle cry will secure his election again.

  6. Great! This means he should also defund the NY budget and pull back all police and security support for any gov’t officials. For the Children! After all, NY is so safe, why do the govt officials need police or security at any courthouse, govt office, mayoral or governor security detail, etc. Save the money and send it to schools. For the children!!

  7. One minor quibble with the above, “technically” our tax dollars aren’t spent on abortions, they are actually legally prohibited from doing so. However, the generous subsidies they get from the government do allow them to spend nearly all of their private money dissecting babies, but still be able to meet their primary mandate of providing women with affordable medical care. So the taxpayer money allows them to provide abortions. It’s a small distinction but if we are going to attack people who call magazines “clips” and suppressors “silencers” then it is best to get the order correct on our end too.

    Regards.

    • Money is fungible, that’s why I don’t give anything to orgs that do something I really disagree with, even if they’ll let me “earmark” it for something I do agree with. They can just shift X dollars (of someone else’s) over to what I don’t like, and I’ve thereby effectively contributed to it anyway.

Sorta like the shell games Colorado plays to sucker people into voting for tax money that DOESN’T end up getting spent on roads. I think the electorate might finally be catching on.

    • The other thing they do is break the abortion procedure up into several services, like consultation, examination, etc. and then bill Medicaid for the non abortion services. The taxpayers then pay for the bulk of the abortion fees.

  8. Italian bloodlines; thinks he’s the Don, even if he’s nothing more than another elitist authoritarian anti rights politician surrounding himself with yes-men.

  9. “shut down the government until they get an iron-clad national gun control law passed”

Does he mean like the one passed in 1934, or 1968, or 1986, each of which saw continued increases in violent crime after their passage?

    • As I stated above, Cuomo’s cries for “gun control” have nothing to do with actually reducing violent crime. He supports gun control for one reason only: it benefits him at election time. He could care less what is good or bad for the electorate.

  10. Go for it! For once I agree with commio. My state and many others will survive. I’m not on the fed payroll and I don’t care much for most services or people who are. More fed has only gotten us more useless laws. Shut it down, do it! Just be careful because people might see that a little liberty serves them well.

  11. And I only thought Ted Cruz did the monkey see, monkey do thing. For one thing the Republicans would never let a bill with gun control language get into the CR and for another it turns a government shutdown into a bipartisan thing. The obvious compromise is both items get tossed from the final CR.

  12. 1) To successfully shut down the government, gun control needs to be a budget issue. To my knowledge, there is no pending or current gun control legislation that is a major budgetary issue. Furthermore, I don’t think you can make a bill that has not become law into a budget issue. So I fail to see how shutting down the government can be used as a tool to pass a law.

    2) If the Democrats want to shut down the government, then more power to them. All data points to government shutdowns being political suicide for the party that initiates it. Bonus points for shutting it down to pass legislation that most Americans are against.

    • In theory it could be added as an amendment to the CR but you would need a majority to get it in on a procedural vote. The votes aren’t there. Cuomo isn’t used to working from a minority position so he probably thinks he can pass it like he did the safe act.

    • Barack Obama can simply refuse to sign a budget (or a continuing resolution) until they hand him a gun control bill that he deems sufficient. Which is exactly what he’s doing with Planned Parenthood. Don’t fund PP and I won’t sign the bill. There are enough Democrats in the House and Senate to block an override of the veto. Then they turn around and claim that it’s the Republicans that want to shut down the government. And when it does shut down they go out of their way to make it more ‘painful’, like when they sent out numerous park rangers to shut down the WWII memorial that didn’t require any park rangers to keep open, just so they could deny a group of 90 year olds access to it and point their fingers at the Republicans. The only reason they get away (until election day) with their petulant behavior is that the old media is a branch of the DNC.

      • He can get away with that when it’s a Republican initiative that people don’t care about but when he is demanding action on something that a majority of the electorate vehemently opposes then he and the Democrats are going to get smashed.

        • If the DNC media wasn’t shielding as many Americans as possible from the Planned Parenthood human organ trafficking videos then the majority of Americans would care about their tax money funding this organization. Most Americans still think we’re talking about ‘fetal tissue’ not lungs, hearts, kidneys etc.

        • I agree and if weren’t for Carly Fiorina the MSM would still be burying the story. For this, if nothing else, she her presidential bid has had a positive effect.e

        • Fiorina is my pick out of the Never Been in Office club. Trump is too loud. Carson is too quiet. Carly’s just right. Not bad looking for a woman in her 60s either, unlike that other (gun hating) woman running on the other side. Lets face it, who wants to see Hillary’s mug all over the TV for the next 5 (or 9) years?

  13. I know for a fact that New Yorkers outside the five boroughs (Cuomo’s voter base) tend to hate this little caesar.

Cuomo is a perfect example of the fact that “inside every liberal socialist is a totalitarian dictator screaming to get out.”

    • This is probably the most salient comment in the discussion. Andrew Cuomo and his like care about nothing but imposing their individual will upon the People.

  14. Why stop at gun control? Why not shut the government down until the entire constitution is dissolved? Why just the 2nd Amendment?

  15. Funny, with all the violence that surrounds the West Indian parade (where his buddy was shot in the crossfire) you could save dozens of lives by just shutting that down. If these lives matter so much, why not start with that since he actually would have the authority to do so?

    *crickets*

  16. Obviously, when the Republicans held Congress does this, it’s a Government shutdown, but when a Democrat Governor and Legislator does this, it’s “standing on principle”.

    /S

  17. I wish they would do it. Go ahead. Shut down the government. We’ll survive. The bureaucrats won’t, but we citizens will. They won’t do it though. Because if they did shut down, and we did survive, we’d learn that we don’t need them any more.

  18. We need to change this…
“Democrats are absolutely livid over the concept that the Republicans in Congress are so staunchly opposed to funding Planned Parenthood that they are willing to shut down the government rather than continue to see their tax dollars getting spent on abortions.”

The narrative should be, “Democrats and this President believe the human carnage at the hands of Planned Parenthood is more important than any other function of government, and are willing to shut down government rather than withhold funding for butchery.”

  19. It takes two parties, neither of them willing to compromise, to create a standoff like this. Which one of the two you will blame depends on which side you happen to be on.

  20. Elitist politicians have no interest in what the people believe, regardless of party — they only care what the 0.02% who provide most of the political campaign money want.

    • Of course. If majority Dems don’t vote for funding because of a Repub “poison pill” in the budget, it’s a shutdown caused by the Republican minority and their insistence on keeping their addition in the budget. If majority Repubs don’t vote for funding because of a Dem “poison pill” in the budget, it’s a shutdown caused by the majority Republicans and their refusal accept the Dem “addition” and pass the funding. That’s journalism 101.

  21. Aw yeah! A win-win. No more gun laws, and a government shutdown…means no more gun laws and all the rest. I hope he gets what he wants.

  22. An iron-clad gun control law? OK, anyone that passes and/or attempts to enforce gun control laws shall be tried for treason and conspiracy to deprive the citizens of their rights. 25 to life ought to be about right…
Be careful what you ask for Cuomo.

  23. Military pensions need to stay. Andrew Cuomo (Democrat and governor of New York) Is a traitor. If he does not understand the 2nd he needs to READ it!! Until he understands what “shall not infringe” means he is an A$$

No double standards put the DC politicians on Obamacare and SS.Thanks for your vote.Pass the word. mrpresident2016.com

  24. Cuomo. Reminds me of the sound of a cat hocking up a hair ball. Looks like whats cat leaves in the kitty litter box.
Another perfect Democrat from New York, who actually believes the rest of the country cares what they think.

    • coumo is not the problem. he is merely the elected spokesman for the problem. strike the problem at the source; turn out a superior voting population.

      • Correct. The FAULT, dear Brutus, lies not in our Stars (whom we elect to office); it is in ourselves, the voters.

We need to turn our attention to our neighbors, the voters. We need not convert them to Born-Again-2A-Advocates. We just need to edge them toward the idea that gun-control legislation is a futile cause. Too many skeptics won’t vote for you on this cause; too many 2A advocates will vote against you for just this one issue.

  25. Abortion is not protected by the Bill of Rights. Unlike my right to keep and bear arms. Cuomo can go fuck himself.
