Sen. Chris Murphy

I write today to urge you to not broadcast NASCAR’s NRA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on April 13th. This race, which is being sponsored by the National Rifle Association (NRA), is going to take place during the Senate’s consideration of legislation to reduce gun violence. The race not only brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race. This celebration of guns is inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre. But most importantly, broadcasting this race, which will highlight the NRA and its radical agenda during this time, sends a harmful signal to the families affected by gun violence, as well as the millions of Americans who support sensible gun control measures and enjoy your sports programming . . .

The horror that unfolded on December 14th at Sandy Hook Elementary School has sparked a national conversation about the adequacy of our gun laws. Considering your support of sane gun control measures and the extreme nature of the NRA, I urge you to not broadcast this race on April 13th. Inserting Fox Sports in this debate at this critical time will give credence to an extreme organization that is opposed to reasonable policies to stem gun violence.

  1. Apparently Sen. Murphy has nothing better to do with his time. If he sent that letter on tax payer time I’d like a refund.

    • inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre.

It was 4 months ago and it wasn’t anyone from the NRA or even a legal gun owner who did it. He stands on graves for a living. Sick.

      • I’ll say it again: these liberals are true control freaks. Don’t broadcast a race? WTF. All the left’s accusations of Conservative control nonsense is pure hypothetical crap. The liberal’s control freak examples are real and concrete.

    • Of course he has nothing better to do with his time. In the 2012 Senate race it was brought up that he has a 77 percent absence rate fron congressional hearings held on Capitol Hill. He is another worthless politician that has no business being in office. Shame on the people of CT for keeping him in office.

  2. And of course Murdoch, being an Aussie-style “conservative”, is firmly on the gun-grabber bandagon.

I’m hoping that this massive over-reaching by the grabbers will provoke some sort of reaction from the low-info voters who apprently now decide our elections, God help us all. I mean, your averager Fudd may not care about scary black rifles, but doesn’t he care about NASCAR?

    • I am not a NASCAR fan and will probably never understand the attraction. I am not a big fan of the NRA, either.

My response to Senator Murphy: FOAD

      • Like sports I don’t understand the enjoyment people get from watching it. I however don’t drink so I believe I am missing a big part of it, lol.

The crashes are interesting and it would be extremely fun to be in the race.

        • I am a member of the NRA for the magazine, I would like The Armed Citizen section to be its own magazine too.

I believe that they compromise too much in an effort to not be labeled “extreme”. This is in part how our enemy will win because that allows them to control the fight by getting us to remove cards from our own hand.

  3. “as well as the millions of Americans who support sensible gun control measures and enjoy your sports programming” what about the millions of Americans who do not support their government infringing on their rights who also enjoy the sporting event? Oh that is right they are evil and do not get a voice.

    • If I was to guess, I would say there was far more overlap between race fans and infringement opposition than between race fans and those “who support sensible gun control measures.” But what do I know, I’ve only been a NASCAR fan my whole life.

  4. Snivel snivel.. Get over in the immediate wake of?? Stomp on those dead children’s bodies ab bit more why don’t you.. NASCAR fans would revolt if they didn’t get to watch their race, guns or no guns…

    • “They” began on that a long time ago; the first is often interpreted in practice (as regards religion) as the freedom to be any kind of Chrisktian to care to.

Or how about “free speech zones?”

‘Course, those extremists have a little elephant shoulder patch on their brown shirts.

While not all politicians are a$$wipes, the profession

      • F<cking browser!

Continuation of last: …does seem to attract its unfair share of 'em.

Hmmm… People with anger management issues attracted to police work, control freaks attracted to government, holier-than-thou types attracted to social work… I perceive a pattern.

  5. Boo-freakin’-hoo!! Like we don’t get hours upon hours of anti-gun crap from the MSM every week. Koom-buy-freakin’-yah, ya whiny little lib-tard pissants.

Hey Murph – here’s a solution. Take a Midol you freakin’ cramp, and go watch your “Dancing with the Stars” marathon from your DVR, or whack off to your highlights on C-SPAN (shouldn’t be but a minute either way) while the rest of us watch NASCAR.

  6. The race . . . brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, [and we can’t allow the American public to be exposed to any ideas except the ones that we’ve decided on and packaged up for them.]

… the NRA and its radical agenda …

I realize that someone could be a radical conservative (or obstructionist, if you prefer) in never wanting anything to change, ever, but in my mind the word “radical” is almost inextricably linked to “change.” And right now, the NRA is fighting change in the form of massive new regulations. So from where I’m sitting, I don’t see them as radical.

    • Change, usually. Often for he bad, in either direction.

Please explain how the SCOTUS siding with “Citizens United” [a laughable name] was highly radical.

Why can’t all of ’em just leave us alone?

  7. If you pro-criminals don’t like our guns then MOVE TO CUBA where you commie idols rule!

YOU CAN HAVE MY GUNS….ONE BULLET AT A TIME BECAUSE I DO SHOOT LIBERAL TRESPASSERS!

  8. I say that the AG should indict this worm for using Hate Speech. A little Hitler trying to demean demonize and destroy citizens expressing their opinions. What is next Nazi swine. Open up the ovens for NRA members?

    • Actually, many gun grabbers have advocated for the execution of people who exercise their right to be armed.

No one in a “high-profile” position has done this to my knowledge. However, many a keyboard commando has expressed this desire on the ‘Net.

  9. This reminds me a lot of what has been done to Cigarettes over the years. It will get to the point where they can’t even say Gun or show a gun on TV unless it is in the hands of a LEO.

    • Hmmm… Maybe.

However, the whittling away at cigarettes on television is really a rather different matter.

There will always be weapons, manufactured or improvised, and I am justified in using overwhelming force in opposition to any person(s) wielding them – or in some cases, wielding none.

Marketing addictive substances to kids is just a tidge different.

  10. “. . . it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race. This celebration of guns is inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre.”

So, no shooting of guns should ever be televised ever again because of a tragedy that was caused by one person? Does that about sum it up?

Quit mistaking a coffin for a soapbox, douche!

  11. This should be interesting. A politician asking a businessman to renege on a contract. Irrespective of who the sponsor is and whether or not Mr. Murphy likes them, it seems he fails to understand the ramifications of legally binding contracts. For this race to happen there are players involved other than the NRA and FOX TV. What about the company who owns the track, what about the myriad businesses who have already paid for advertising, and what about cable companies who would handle the distribution? Does the legislator in question even bother to think of them? Does he bother to think what these companies will do if their contracts are not honored? Furthermore, what of all the fans sitting at home, waiting to see their heroes zip around the track? Of course not, the only thing that matters to him is his moment on the national stage, the moment “when I tried to do this for the children”. What a grandstanding hypocritical POS………….

  12. “The race not only brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate…”

Huh!?! So you, Schumer, Biden, Bloomberg and Obama showing up on tv every day shows both sides of the debate? It’s ok to have the people that agree with you say/do/slander whoever they want but not for those who don’t agree with you? Let people make up their own minds. And if you think one nascar race is really gonna make that much of a difference then you need a new hobby… wanna go shooting sometime? Silencing the opposite side of an argument is an age old tactic but it shouldn’t be an American one.

  13. Can someone please give me the Newtown massacre aftermath timetable? I want to know when the “immediate wake of the Newtown massacre” time period ends so I know when it is P.C. for us to talk about guns again in a positive manner.

  14. NASCAR should invite him onto the track to give a speech regarding his views. Preferably right in the middle of the 15th lap.

  15. Immediate wake? only if you want to keep the trajedy alive for your political gain. Otherwise it’s dead & buried. I can’t blame the clown for trying, thats a pretty f’d up circus he’s running though, Randy

  16. By millions of Americans, he means the 999,999 he made up.
By NRA radical agenda, he means upholding the 2nd.

Politicians are gonna be saying “in the wake of the Newtown disaster” for the next 20 years im sure. Because whenever you want to hurt something, the rules of time suddenly don’t exist, making what will be say 20 years the same as a single day.

  17. I’ve watched one NASCAR race in my entire life. However, since the NRA is sponsoring one and d-bag from Connecticut doesn’t like it I’m gonna watch it.

  18. If the race was sponsored by the Mayor of New York, or any other of the occupied cities and states? That would be OK I bet.

  19. Me thinks the politicians are getting a reminder that the power stems from the people, not the dirtba…… I mean politicians. King George learned it.

  20. I think it’s past time that gun owners boycott anti-gun events, sports, and organizations etc such as the national baseball and football leagues and the games.

    • I’m boycotting my beloved Yankees this year. Mostly because they suck. If I want to see bad baseball, I can always tune into NESN and watch the Dead Sox.

    • Agreed! We seriously need to boycott anything and everything that presnts or represents ANY anti-gun, 2nd Amendment infringement, regardless of who or what the occasion is. It’s time we let them know that we have had enough, and we aren’t going to take it any more!

  21. NASCAR is similar to shooting and enjoying guns. Some people don’t understand it and make fun of it even though they’ve never experienced it for themselves. I’ve worked in the automotive industry for a long time, and practically everyone I’ve ever worked with are both car guys and gun guys. There’s something about being able to enjoy something mechanical, tinker with it, improve your skill with it, troubleshoot it when it isn’t working like it should, etc. If you’ve never watched any racing, give it a shot. Like we say, take someone that’s never been around guns shooting. They get hooked. Never seen a NASCAR race? Watch one. Or better yet, go to one. Find a local short track and go experience it. Smell the smells, hear the noise, and you’ll be hooked. And this b@stard? FOAD.

    • You are correct but I’d like to say that experiencing a race is better if you go to a local short track instead of trying to experience it first on T.V. I have been a racing fan my whole life but usually cannot watch a whole NASCAR race without falling asleep. Texas is a pretty good track though.

Now anyone remember what happened when Presidential candidate Bill Clinton (back in 1992) went to Charlotte’s NASCAR race to drum up support and be seen by the masses?

  22. Now the no good COMMIES are picking on NASCAR. These idiots don’t seem to realize that the great majority of NASCAR fans are gun people, who don’t give two $hits about how he feels. Murdick is a low life COMMIE and I hope the crook gets locked up.

  23. Anybody else getting tired of these asshats standing on the graves of those children in order to further there political agenda?

    • Way ahead of you, buddy.

In fact, I’m not just tired ot it; I’d like for all politicians and journalists to wear a codpiece with a satellite controlled, spring-loaded piston in it. That way, anytime I hear one of them use the phrase “In the wake of” to push their agenda, I can simply hit a button and give them a well-deserved punch in the balls for it.

  24. They can televise it because the same amendment that gives him the right to blabber protects the right to show the race.

  25. I am not a NASCAR fan. I much prefer rally, gt, and drag racing. But F*** this dude, why the heck does he think he can decide what other people get to watch. This saying has been popping in to my head constantly for the past couple months now: “Your rights end at my nose.” Don’t remember where I heard it from, probably kindergarten. Their right to demand anything regarding me ends at my person, and I will fight them for that right.

  26. Murphy is simply a soccer mom, his stance is so lame it really doesn’t merit a reply, But, ol’ Jim here, he can’t help himself.
Murph, how many of these mass murderers were NRA members?
    Though so, next question…
Why is having NRA involved in this race any different than having one sponsored by , let’s say a swimming pool manufacturer? More people are killed annually in pool accidents, Murph..
Just to make your day, how about the Army, Marine sponsored race cars?? Once you limit THEM to 10 rounds we’ll talk, for now please FOAD you piece of communist crapola!

  27. “The race… brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race. This celebration of guns is inappropriate…”

That’s weird. Here I thought they were only concerned about crime and saving children. Sounds like he just hates guns and the NRA.

  28. I really don’t care for NASCAR, but I think I’ll watch this race just for the Senator. In fact, I’m going to renew my old membership in the NRA, which lapsed years ago. I’ve come to the conclusion that dispite my differences with the NRA, and the way they can be completely full of shit on some things…they’re 100 miles closer to truth than any of the gun grabbers.

  29. The horror…the horror.

If the Brady Campaign had enough money to sponsor a race, I’m sure NASCAR would be more than happy to oblige – maybe. But they don’t, so they can’t.

Maybe what we need is a Kickstarter fund drive for the FOAD 500 to be held as a second race at Kentucky Speedway.

  30. My letter to Murphy (oh well, I guess I’ve probably been on some lists for a while now anyway):

    Dear Senator Murphy,

I am deeply troubled by your attempt to silence the voice of the NRA, which represents millions of Americans (85% or their funding comes from regular citizens). Regardless of whether you think their views are extreme, all Americans have a right to participate in the political process. If Mayor Bloomberg can use his personal fortune to spread the views he favors, how can millions of NRA members be denied the same opportunity?

I have never watched a NASCAR race in my life, and I have had mixed feelings regarding the NRA. However, any attempt to stifle open exchange of ideas must be vigorously opposed. Accordingly, I will watch the race, and I have made a donation to the NRA with you in mind.

  31. Where was this f#@ktard when Spears Mfg. Co. actually sponsored a truck in the (then) Craftsman Truck Series, and Wayne Spears had the bed cover emblazoned with a large ‘I’m the NRA, and I vote’ logo? Let him put his money where his mouth is and have him and his fellow travelers sponsor a race. Let’s see how many people watch the ‘Gun Control 500’ on MSNBC.

  32. Violence is a human trait, not a firearm (gun) trait.
    Any questions ?
The anti’s are making a spectacle of themselves.
Do not use their deceiving language, such as “assault weapons”, “gun violence” to name a couple.
Each and everytime they open their mouth, nothing but lies and or fables flutter out. Alas, a new name for them….The flutterbugs !

  33. April 14-2013, time 1:30 pm, I just read the list of replys to Sen Murphy of CT. from top to bottom without skipping a beat. I needed that, I am gratefull to have found so many who write what I feel and write it so well. I found this site by accident less than an hour ago and wrote it down in my ledger,,to stay there for good. THYNX

  34. With ALL due respect for the tragedy, wouldn’t it be very appropriate to let Sandy Hook heal? Instead of attacking law abiding citizens and the very Document that includes the 2nd amendment which makes this Country free, why not put GOD back in the middle of things, pray, and put this great Country back on the path that we as a people have forgotten about? We have lost our way and need to get back on track SOON.
I have personally fought for this Country 1968-1970 and know what freedom is, and isn’t. It’s about time that the politicians brush the cobwebs away begin to remember freedom and the way it was back then. Please let Sandy Hook heal and get back to concentrating on issues that are becoming far greater nationwide and worldwide.
