Cops: Gun Control Won’t Work

We’ve asked policeone.com for permission to republish their survey of cops on gun control. While we await their reply, here’s the NRA’s press release on the eye-opening stats. With a bit of luck, this will be something of a game-changer. Watch this space.

FAIRFAX, Va. – PoliceOne.com released today the results of an extensive survey of about 15,000 active and retired law enforcement officers of all ranks and from departments ranging in size from less than 25 to more than 1,000. These results strongly show that law enforcement officers do not support President Obama’s gun control agenda. They do, however, strongly support the Right-to-Carry by law-abiding Americans. The survey respondents are united in their desire for politicians to focus on keeping firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill and to reject unconstitutional gun control measures that infringe on Second Amendment rights . . .

“The American people, and particularly the members of law enforcement, want politicians in Washington to stop pursuing a failed political agenda and get to work fixing our broken mental health system, improving school security, and getting criminals off the streets,” said the executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, Chris W. Cox.

The following are some key findings:

99 percent said policies other than an “assault weapons” ban are most important to prevent mass shootings.

Almost 96 percent said that a ban on standard capacity magazines would not reduce violent crime.

More than 91 percent stated that the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime should have stiff, mandatory sentences, and no plea-bargains.

More than 91 percent stated they supported the Right-to-Carry by law abiding Americans.

More than 81 percent said that “gun buy-backs” do not reduce gun violence.

80 percent believe legally armed citizens can reduce casualties in incidents of mass violence.

Nearly 80 percent said that a ban on private transfers of firearms between law-abiding citizens would not reduce violent crime.

More than 76 percent indicated that legally armed citizens are important to reducing crime.

More than 76 percent support the arming of trained and qualified teachers or administrators who volunteer to carry a firearm.

More than 70 percent said that a ban on “assault weapons” would not reduce violent crime.

More than 70 percent opposed the idea of a national registry of legal gun sales.

Nearly 68 percent said magazine capacity restrictions would negatively affect them personally.

More than 60 percent said that the passage of Obama’s gun control legislation would not improve officer safety.

  1. The fact is none of those gun control proposals actually stop people from being shot. Only people shooting back can do that. This, from people paid to shoot back.

  2. Why bother with the NY Daily News? The “quality” of their journalism is well reflected by this piece from today: http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/schumer-kelly-stand-gun-control-idiots-fear-article-1.1310307
Written by an expert on the Constitution, politics, and freedom: the once-competent sports writer Mike Lupica.

The full headline is “Sen. Chuck Schumer and Commissioner Ray Kelly stand for gun control against the idiots who fear the few”

The “few” being the majority of American citizens, who support gun rights. The “idiots” being the politicians who actually consider the opinions of their constituents.

Just remember that the “culture” at the NYDN is most akin to a bacterial culture.

  3. One would think that a survey that comprises 14.000 respondents would be important, considering most polls are usually composed of much smaller groups. One would also think that a survey of police officers would be the one to wave like a flag, as these are the guys on the front line when it comes to crime. Do not for a second expect that the press, who absolutely love to cite polls (when it fits their preconceived agenda) will ever bother with this one. The reason is glaringly evident-this poll disagrees with the meme that the press and the politicians have been feeding the public. The armed intelligentsia knows the facts, which are useless to those with an agenda.

  4. Off topic.

Since TTAG has adopted nomenclature to more accurately describe actors in the gun “debate”, e.g. “slave states vs free states”, “DGU” etc., then based on the surprisingly felonious make up the group, a concern for factual accuracy demands that MAIG forever more be known as IMAG – Illegal Mayors Against Guns

  5. No kidding.

Would a cop opt to carry less ammo when facing off against a violent criminal? What about a soldier versus another soldier? Of course not.

So why is the US govt. trying to force the average law-abiding citizen to carry less ammo against the violent criminal element in this country in a self-defense situation?

It’s the height of arrogance to ignorance to even suggest such a notion.

  6. Until the late 70’s and 80’s there were state hospitals where the insane could be kept for everyone’s safety. Now these people are on the streets (or populating prisons). Medication is the treatment instead of removing them from society. Psych meds? I take the word of a schizophrenic patient who told me “if I take the meds I get to talk to you (meaning me, his nurse). If I don’t take the meds I get to talk to God. Which would you choose?”

  7. what it be?, from Hidden Hills, California I want to mention, I liked this article. However, it is strange how I ended up on your post. I searched for kc trolley service on Yahoo and ended up on your website. I must say I do like your site and will check back soon. But I need to find the limo I was originally looking for first. Have a lovely day! bye-bye.

  8. Well, I know a cop who opposes gun control.

The survey results are what you get when 1st line supervisors and boots on the street have a say. Politicians in uniform, who work in air conditioned offices, have opinions shockingly similar to the politicians who appointed them.

  10. Now run that survey among chiefs of police, and I’d bet the results are just the opposite. If a politician sponsors a bill to ban guns, limit carry rights, etc., he calls as witnesses city police chiefs, and they all dutifully stand in line to testify to the dangers of armed citizens, bullet proof vests in private hands, and the horror of assault weapons and hollow point bullets. Nor does it seem to matter which political party they belong to.

  11. One of the Chiefs on Cape Cod once told me “you guys (concealed carriers) make my job easier.” Needless to say, that town is de facto “shall issue,” as are others in Massachusetts.

Compare him to many big city cops. The latter will shoot you for holding a hose or a phone. Or for driving a van.

So where did the myth — that big city cops are good and small town cops are bad — ever come about? Oh, wait. It came from big city cops and their political bosses who consider the PD to be their own person army. What was I thinking.

  12. But, but, that scary tan high powered military assault rifle with the deadly silencer punched right through that poor vest! The traditional remchesterby hunting rifles that Obama says he won’t touch aren’t powerful or scary enough to defeat that vest, so those should be the only ones we are allowed to own! /sarc (obviously)

  13. Cops have proven to be the enemy time and again,
Your silhouettes should be men in blue.
Any Cops want to chime in and rebut?
    I didn’t think so.

    • Blue silhouettes?

Kid, you are exactly the reason why we need firearms to protect ourselves. Your comment speaks to the fact, that either you are a felon — or have a violent tendencies that will eventually lead you down that path.

Obama, liberals, illegals and people like you are the reason why our country is in trouble.

  15. Eleven family members of victims…even if it’s only one family member per victim, that’s only half the victims represented. Mostly likely only a handful.

So the majority of the families whose kids were killed in this massacre either don’t support Big O’s gun prohibition agenda or just want to keep their grief private.

I wonder how many of the Sandy Hook families oppose Obama’s dystopian vision…probably we’ll never know. The national media doesn’t want to know, so we’ll never hear it. And Second Amendment groups probably aren’t callous enough to publicly exploit these devastated families like the prohibition industry is doing.

  16. There is a hugely important result for question 5. Here is the question:

“What effect do you think a federal ban on manufacture and sale of some semi-automatic firearms, termed by some as ‘assault weapons,’ would have on reducing violent crime?”

While 71% of respondents said it would have NO effect, 21% said it would have a negative effect — which means banning “assault weapons” would increase violent crime. So if we aggregate those responses, 92% of respondents say that banning semi-automatic firearms (a.k.a. “assault weapons”) will not reduce violent crime. And included in that 92% of respondents are 21% who believe that banning “assault weapons” will actually increase violent crime!

We, the Armed Intelligentsia, have to run with these results!

  17. This is a sword that cuts both ways. The democrats. liberals, progressives, etc are quiet about the continuation of GITMO, the PATRIOT act, wire tapping, etc. when it is their man in the white house. I remember how vogue it was to criticize the federal government and the POTUS when ole GW was in the white house. Back then I doubted the war in Iraq, even though I wasn’t fully against it, and was flat out against TARP and the PATRIOT act. No matter what side of the political fence you are on bad policy is bad policy whether they have a R or a D next to their name. Finally some of the best Americans had a healthy fear of the government, even if they were still willing to work within it. I am a patriot and I generally feel the US government is beneficial; however, blind patriotism without any qualms about the state’s actions leads to things like McCarthyism or worse Facism.

  18. Well add this to the VERY LONG list of idiotic statements from the gun grabbing left……

“Marshall Dillon only used one shot!”

….and yet the left constantly accuses the right of being shallow thinkers.

The left and the MFM are MORONS!!

  19. While I do understand that most police officers are good people who do a very necessary job, a few sour grapes can give people a nasty taste to the whole bunch. I’d also like to pose a thought that’s been in my head for a while. Am I the only one who notices a greater trend toward police corruption in areas where there is a much higher restriction on private citizen’s rights to carry? (Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago as well as the entirety of Mexico)

  20. I’ll take my SR40 over a glock, s&w, or what ever. First time out I put 5 shots in a quarter size bulls eye at 20 yards. I stopped after the 5, put up a new target and did the same thing. All I can say is, you can’t shoot.

  21. In my lifetime, and i readily admit my experiences may not be what yours are, I have been rescued twice from the side of the rode after my car crapped out on me by cops. On an active freeway in California I had a CHP officer put himself between me and oncoming traffic after a major wreck and that same CHP officer went on foot into fast moving traffic to rescue a woman who was injured and stumbling thru traffic. He did this while all the citizens in their cars were honking and shouting obscenities at the delays as they tried to bull on thru in their cars.

I had a cop catch me dead to rights drinking and with an open container in my car. He had me pour my beverage out and told me if he saw me on the street again that night I would go to jail.

I had a California cop catch me concealed carrying without a permit. He gave me a talking to and told me that if it happened again he would take me to jail and then let me go home, still armed. I promised that officer I wouldn’t do it again and I haven’t.

These things happened over a period of 40+ years and in 2 different states. There’s a reason I say I support the rank and file cops and not their bosses. YMMV.

    • Most people think of the situation as Cops vs Citizens.
What they fail to realize is that COPS ARE CITIZENS TOO!

When it comes to the Liberal powermongers, they think this is true of Cops as well as the Military. They think of the military as something separate from the Citizen. So all they need to do is get enough power to order these two groups, Cops and Military, to do their unlawful and unconstitutional bidding against the Citizens.

When it comes down to it, they will be in for a rude awakening when the Cops and the Military band together with the citizens.

Cops or Military, we are ALL Citizens of these United States and we all swore an oath to protect her from all enemies foreign AND DOMESTIC.
In point of fact, most cops and Military are some of the STRONGEST supporters of the 2nd Amendment.

  23. The problem with these kind of articles is that “gun control” writers have no problem lumping pro-2A people with drug dealers, white supremacists, felons with a grudge, etc….
Maybe what legislators fear is actual reprisal. After all, they have the examples not only of their former colleague Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded with a semi-automatic pistol in 2011, but of at least four other public officials—the director of prisons for Colorado, two state prosecutors in Texas, a sheriff in West Virginia—who were shot to death in recent months.

  24. Wouldn’t it be nice if we lived in a country where you could be assured of treatment in keeping with the law, and not one where getting a ticket, or not (or possibly being shot) depended on your willingness to massage the officer’s ego?

Although I agree that many TTAG readers probably have “a healthy respect [for] LEOs and the job they do”, I hope readers are paying attention so that attitude is changing. I would love to see things change to where I could have respect for law enforcement in America again, but I’m afraid we’re headed in the opposite direction. The unwarranted lionization of the LEO post-911, as if every rural country sheriff’s deputy was a member of NYPD at Ground Zero or is somehow a key player in the GWOT, has created a class of LEOs who demand, and receive, excessive “respect” (read: “asskissing”) from the “civilians” they encounter, and who enforce their perceived superiority at gunpoint. It makes me a little ill.

  25. In his mind, because others have failed at self-defense-the rest of us should just give it up. Well if that works for him, so be it. I choose to ignore him and others who feel that we should just accept that these things happen and hence do NOTHING in terms of self protection. For those who choose to self-victimize-this is America-and you have that right. I on the other hand have and will continue to embrace our 2nd amendment.

  26. I can’t stop laughing over the idiots returning to ask for the gun back. Maybe they figured if they weren’t shot by their intended victims the first time around, there would be continued restraint and no unnecessary use of deadly force by their intended victims, if they were very polite and asked for the return of their gun.
