I’ve often watched divorced parents exchanging kids with their former spouses in a convenience store parking lot near my home and wondered how often fights occur during such transfers. While violent crime statistics don’t include figures on that particular occurrence, one such child transfer recently led to a Colorado man killing another man.
Investigators looking into the fatal shooting in the parking lot of a Woodland Park, Colorado, grocery store are leaning toward a determination that the shooter fired the fatal shots in self-defense. According to a report at Gazette.com, the shooting occurred on November 29 outside a City Market grocery store in Woodland Park after a physical altercation during a child custody exchange.
As the Colorado Bureau of Investigation explained, Luis Morales was making a custody exchange when he got into a physical confrontation with the boyfriend of the child’s mother. Witnesses told investigators that when the 28-year-old Morales threatened the other man with a knife, the boyfriend fired a single shot, striking Morales.
According to the Gazette.com report, Woodland Park police officers and bystanders gave first aid to Morales before he was transported to a Colorado Springs hospital, but he later died. According to the CBI, the shooter stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators on the case.
On December 18, the CBI issued a press release stating that the investigation would soon be coming to a close.
“The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has nearly completed its investigation into a fatal shooting at a City Market grocery store in Woodland Park on Friday, November 29, 2024,” the release stated. “Based on the evidence gathered so far, this appears likely to be a case of self-defense, but a final decision will be made by the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.”
Also, according to the press release, agents will be handing the case over to prosecutors soon to make the final determination of whether the shooter will be charged or not.
“The CBI agent leading this investigation expects to forward the case file to prosecutors by the end of the month,” the release stated. “In the meantime, CBI has been in contact with the family of shooting victim Luis Morales about what it can share during a pending investigation.”
Colorado law allows the use of deadly force in self-defense in certain circumstances, including if you reasonably believe you or another person is in imminent danger of death, great bodily injury, kidnapping, sexual assault or similar serious crimes.
“In the meantime, CBI has been in contact with the family of shooting victim Luis Morales about what it can share during a pending investigation.”
That is a deceptive choice of words because Mr. Morales is NOT a “victim” if he was indeed attacking someone else.
If we must use the key word “accused” or “allegedly” until a trial court finds someone guilty of a crime, then we must NOT use the word “victim” until a proper investigation or trial court determines the same.
A much better (and less deceptive or speculative) description would simply be “deceased” instead of “victim”. In fact I will argue that using the term “victim” rather than “deceased” actually indicates that the boyfriend was an attacker without a trial court finding the boyfriend guilty of attacking the deceased.
Words matter.
Soooooo…. once again the perp that started the incident and is shot and killed directly due to his or her actions, is labled in the story as the “victim”.
Well, that was stupid of him.
Personally, I’m much more interested in the state level and national level implications of what groups like TdA are doing, since they apparently own a bunch of gold mines as part of their finances. Their ties to Primeiro Comando da Capital have long been a concern.
I have yet further concerns about other various groups since there are indications that how Muslim friends have sent thousands of well trained and financed operatives here for terror related reasons.
I’d recommend SRS#149 and the most recent IRONCLAD interview for a quick gloss of the topics.
Sort of makes you wonder, if they’re even 10% right, how screwed we really are at this point.
strych9,
Your second-to-last sentence referring to SRS#149 and IRONCLAD is somewhat cryptic. I have no zero knowledge on those two references. Can you provide a bit more detail so that I can find the source material and review it?
Test.
They’re referencing YouTube channels. I’ve given you the episodes because links are now verboten, apparently.
Attempts at further explanation simply disappear. This is my 6th try at answering your question.
The point being that if they’re even partly right, the 2A community should be paying attention because if they’re partly right you’re going to rapidly find you may not have a 2A anymore.
Hey Strych:
You can still provide links. Just put a space in the HTTP part. For example, “H TTP://[email protected]” (no quotes)
Useful to know, thanks.
Still fake and ghey.
I get it. And it’s another step for the reader to copy/paste, then remove the space. But whatever. We’re here to communicate. And even though there’s a new sheriff in town, we’re still behind enemy lines. If we have to do it with smoke signals and American Sign Language, then that’s what we’ll do. Me, I’ve been brushing up on my Pig Latin. Surely that’s the code that the zombies won’t be able to crack.

strych9,
Thank you for your persistent attempts to reply.
Regarding the IRONCLAD channel, what is a date or key word in the title that I can search to find the specific video that you are suggesting?
“What Makes Tren de Aragua More Dangerous Than Other Gangs”
Thank you.
“What Makes Tren de Aragua More Dangerous Than Other Gangs”
These are the same that took over that apartment complex not far from you?
The cops are about to get a rude education… 🙁
Yes, and they’re in a couple dozen other states. In numbers and actively recruiting. As I’ve pointed out for months, they’re not just your normal street gang.
That situation goes sideways and you’re going to need a lot of body bags for the police.
The Sarah Adams thing is far, far worse.
Those people go all out Mumbai/Mali/Nairobi and it will takes days for .mil to get them out of the places they take over.
In that instance you’re talking that it’s probably better to just order up a major airstrike on a university building, mega church, stadium or whathaveyou.
Fucking moderation.
Yes, Geoff, they’re the same.
Whoever decided to tweak this comment section moderation control should go listen to “Skulls” by The Misfits and pay close attention to the chorus.
The press release refers to the deceased as a “victim”, which is flat wrong if he actually attacked the boyfriend. Worse yet, calling the deceased a “victim” is declaring that the boyfriend was an attacker even though no court/jury has found the boyfriend guilty of any crime.
If you call someone an attacker–without the “accused” or “alleged” qualifiers–before a jury has found him/her guilty, you have smeared that person which is a crime that we call “libel”.
Fun question: can the boyfriend sue the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for calling the deceased a “victim” which means that the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is calling the boyfriend an attacker?
“Oh, he only had a knife” the pr0gtards will say. Look at China where the occasional incident that gets past the censors clearly show that a determined perpetrator with a knife or two can inflict a number of casualties that rival spree shootings. Or the recent event where someone ran down and killed more than 30 with a car.
In these custody matters, emotions often run high. It is why schools in my area have high fences with spiked tops to help prevent kidnappings.
Southern Cross,
I am surprised that we have yet to see a spree killer use a sword, whether that means a commercially manufactured sword or a homemade sword (which is exceedingly easy and inexpensive to make by the way).
I estimate that a spree killer with a sword who unleashes an attack in a dense crowd can easily impart fatal injuries to at least 12 people and quite likely 20+ people. Remember, a sword is truly silent (unlike firearms with suppressors) and the only way that a spree killer’s murder spree with a sword would dissipate is when onlookers finally start to realize what is happening and disperse: and I can easily picture that taking every bit of 20 seconds or longer.
“I am surprised that we have yet to see a spree killer use a sword, whether that means a commercially manufactured sword or a homemade sword (which is exceedingly easy and inexpensive to make by the way).”
CSI New York had an episode where a Yakusa had severed a dude’s head from his body. While the dude was sitting on a park bench.
But his head remained on his neck, and other than the little blood coming from the slice, it looked like the guy was just unconscious.
I know that’s just fiction, but still; it made me think just how quickly somebody skilled with a sword could do somebody in, then move on to another person. Wouldn’t be difficult in a crowd, and like you say, nobody would know what’s happening unless they had situational awareness and realized that “hey, all those people are just falling down, maybe I should move away.”
And with no sound of gunfire to shake people out of their bias-stupor of daily life, a sword bearing perp could indeed cause a lot of death before being noticed or caught.
Hell, even a lightsaber would make noise. But a real sword? That’s kind of terrifying.
Osprey,
A sword is super dangerous because it enables super deep gashes which means severed major arteries and veins in extremities. And severed major arteries and veins in extremeties means bleeding out in minutes–well before life-saving measures could save the lives of the mortally wounded.
You are correct of course, but not all arteries are deep within the body. The carotid and femoral, for example, and maybe the brachial and that one in your wrist.
Before YT started removing content, there was an ASP video from China (I think) where a guy came into a restaurant with at least one long knife, with the intent to rob the place…or to rob the customers.
So some young guy off to the side starts yelling and doing some martial arts thing, then he goes to kick the knife-wielder in the gut. The guy with the knife just holds the other guy’s leg, and with one swipe, cuts the kicker’s femoral artery.
It did not take even a half-minute for the kicker to stumble over to a wall, sit down with his back to the wall, and lose consciousness and die. With lots of his blood all over the floor.
That femoral sure does pump a lot of blood in a little bit of time. If I’m ever on a jury where somebody is being accused of wrongly shooting a knife-wielder, I will be very hesitant to convict him, unless he was committing a crime during the incident.
Swords tend to get most people moving away from the one carrying the sword especially if swinging it around. Lesser extent of what you see with machetes. Knives typically don’t draw much attention until the screaming starts. Both can cut and stab plenty deep enough to kill but the larger options tend to encourage victims to leave the area more quickly.
Good observation; thanks.
“Also, I think knives are a good idea. Big, fuck-off shiny ones. Ones that look like they could skin a crocodile. Knives are good, because they don’t make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them. Shit ’em right up. Makes it look like we’re serious.“
I used to watch “Forged in Fire”, so I have more than an idea of how to make a sword and the damage they can do.
A friend of mine likes to do neat, creative stuff from time to time. A few years back, she called a local metalworker who would set you up with his forge, a block of metal, and safety gear to wear. Then he would train you “on the job” and physically help you fashion your own knife, machete, or sword; whatever you would like, including the handle! My friend loved it, and I believe she still has her sword!
Regardless of the weapon the crime was clear. I lived in a small Iowa town several years ago where a mother was murdered by her divorced husband during a child exchange. He stabbed her repeatedly while the children screamed and pleaded for their father to stop. This also occurred in a parking lot. One the mother felt safe in because it was directly across the street from the police station.
That’s heartbreaking.
And it angers me, too.
And that dude is probably out of prison, maybe released during Covid, or maybe pardoned by a weak-on-crime governor or president.
