Professional movers make a note. When Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) eventually vacates her office on Capitol Hill, it’s going to be an easy lift.

She recently compared the weight of an AR-15 to something really scary and simple to visualize for those who are easily frightened. Since no one really likes moving, it must have been natural to compare them to moving boxes.

“I held an AR-15 in my hand. I wish I hadn’t,” Rep. Jackson Lee said. “It is as heavy as 10 boxes that you might be moving.”

Moving Boxes? Really?

Those are some mighty light moving boxes, given the average AR-15 weighs in at between seven and nine pounds. But don’t fret yet, she made her description super scary for the uninitiated.

“And the bullet that is utilized, a .50 caliber, these kinds of bullets need to be licensed and do not need to be on the street,” she added.

Social media was quick to show her the difference between the two bullets.

The scariest part of her attempt to demonize the rifle of which she obviously knows little is that she’s a leading voice calling for the ban on these commonly-owned rifles. She’s an original co-sponsor of H.R. 1296, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 and sits on the House Judiciary Committee, through which all gun legislation must flow.

We know we’re just the firearms industry trade association, but we know a thing or two about firearms. The AR-15 is most commonly chambered in a .223 caliber or 5.56mm bullet. The .50 caliber bullet is a full half-inch diameter. It’s the difference of driving a sports car and Mack truck. One is much, much heavier.

Hyperbole Helps Gun Control

We shouldn’t be surprised.  This isn’t a new tactic. New York Daily News’ Gersh Kuntzman fired an AR-15 for an objective report to inform those who aren’t familiar with the rifle. The headline read, literally, “It’s horrifying, menacing and very very loud.” So loud, he described it this way, “It felt to me like a bazooka — and sounded like a cannon.”

Of course, there’s case of Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling who gave an AR-15 lesson to CNN’s Gary Tuchman. The general, in all his military experience, described the semiautomatic as full semiautomatic.” Cringeworthy, yes, since the general made a career of the martial arts, including the use of firearms in warfare. He certainly should know the difference between an automatic firearm like a machine gun and a semiautomatic rifle that fires one bullet for each squeeze of the trigger.

Lt. Gen. Hertling attempted to clear the air by agreeing that he misspoke. Yet, he never came out and said he cut gun control videos for the gun control group Giffords for Gun Safety.

The American public deserves better than half-truths, made-up farcical facts and duplicitous claims.

This is a serious debate. The National Shooting Sports Foundation comes to the table with actual facts and Real SolutionsSM.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the national trade association for the firearms industry based in Newtown, Connecticut. Formed in 1961, the organization has more than 8,000 members: firearms manufacturers, distributors, retailers, shooting ranges, sportsmen’s clubs and media.

  1. Ignorant or lying propagandists? I’d say a little bit of both. She might think 5.56 means .556 caliber, but I doubt she’s interested in actually being informed. It isn’t that hard to find these things out.

As far as Lt. Gen. Hertling clearing the air with his non-apology, he said people were missing the point. He only said it that way because he was trying to inform the crew. For someone that should qualify as an expert, he sure is a terrible teacher, or maybe just a lying propagandist.

It’s scary how incompetent people in charge of the government are. Listen in on your local, state, or federal legislature when they’re discussing a topic you know something about. It’s crazy how many just shoot from the hip with emotional instead of informed responses.

    • Exactly. She doesn’t care about the technical details, and neither do her supporters.

The useful idiots don’t even understand why technical details are important for crafting clear laws that define what is and isn’t legal. Some concerned-looking people have promised them safety, rainbows, and ponies. That’s good enough for them.

The people pulling the strings of the useful idiots recognize the potential for abuse in ambiguity, and actively seek it.

I’m guessing Lee is a useful idiot rather than a string puller, not that it really matters.

      • “She doesn’t care about the technical details, and neither do her supporters”
You hit the nail on the head. In CA and NY, for example, the Dem Politicians didn’t get a lot of technical details right and they still passed gun laws.

        • “In CA and NY, for example, the Dem Politicians didn’t get a lot of technical details right and they still passed gun laws.”

“You don’t need to be technically correct when you are morally right.”

    • You are giving her way too much credit. Granted I’m sure using metric units are way beyond her, but to think she could muddle her way through a misplaced decimal point to make that mistaken association requires more cognitive skill than is at her disposal.

  2. They’re ignorant because they choose to be. They aren’t interested in the facts. If you try to educate them they put their fingers in their ears and chant la-la-la-la.

    • The problem with facts is that they get in the way of lying to get their way.

The big problem with lying (besides the direct harm it causes) is that when you tell a lie it becomes difficult to remember which lies you’ve told to whom, and you eventually wind up contradicting yourself. That’s a common feature we see in the Left. That’s why I make it a policy to stick to the truth. It’s a lot easier to avoid mistakes.

      • EWTHeckman-

What you just said isn’t limited to one party or ideology. Unless you’re so blind or brainwashed or just like gaslighting or you’re just ignorant? Or could you not even keep your own lies straight? The left, the right, the Ds, the Rs and everyone lies.

Just look at the current occupant of the White House. Fits in EXACTLY with what you just said. Except he and y’all say he isn’t on the left…. (No party lies more then the other unfortunately. And we’re all stupid for believing otherwise.)

        • You made several mistakes.

First, that mistakes are the same thing as lies. Everyone makes mistakes and gets things wrong. Getting something wrong is not the same thing as lying.

Second, that one person lying makes someone else guilty. If that were true, I could call you a liar because SJL lies.

Third is the assumption that everyone lies all the time. That’s simply false.

Fourth is that you thought your accusation had some merit.

You can avoid a fifth error by learning from this exchange. Have a great day!

  3. Politicians who don’t know anything about firearms shouldn’t be the ones making gun control laws. That’s like a doctor performing surgery but not knowing anything about the human body. Its political malpractice.

  4. Maybe you can’t fix stupid, but you can fight it by shining light into the dark. In education the policy-makers often know little about education. Firearms regulation suffer a similar set of issues. Introducing legislation that those who sit on particular committees demonstrate a degree of knowledge and understanding could be a start… but providing a set of minimum expectations for career politicians would get their undies in a knot, although every other profession requires some form of certification or proof you know WTF you’re talking about.

  5. I watched the Gen.’s video on gun control. He is “retired”… and looking for a job. Don’t be surprised when his name shows up on a ballot somewhere or, he takes a lucrative job with the “left”. As they say, to find the facts, just follow the money.

  6. SJL is the dumbest clown to ever hit the airways- she is clueless and terminally stupid. If I was a voter in her district I would be ashamed. But then again perhaps the voters in her district are just as stupid.

      • “You look at the level of “average” intelligence and see half the people are under that margin.”

Contemplating that statement a little longer, one finds it applies equally to all the Doctors and Lawyers.

Except in Lake Woebegone, where all the children are above average.

        • Well, not all of them… Don’t forget U.S. Representative Hank Johnson from Georgia (who is still in office):

“During a House Armed Services Committee hearing on March 25, 2010 concerning the U.S. military installation on the island of Guam, Johnson said to Admiral Robert F. Willard, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, “My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize”, to which Admiral Willard replied, “We don’t anticipate that.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hank_Johnson

  7. I think I’m going to start talking about topics I know nothing about and convince everyone around me that I’m an authority on the matter. Things like veganism, underwater basket weaving, and the trajectories of NOAA’s weather satellites in orbit. And then I’ll verbally attack anyone who disagrees with me and call them racist.

If it’s good for the goose, it’s good for the gander, no?

  8. You can get a short action AR chambered in .50 Beowolf and you can get an Bolt Action AR-50 chambered in .50 BMG. The former is at the high end of AR-15 weight but still single digit pounds and the later comes in at 34lbs but is not semiautomatic.

    I doubt she know this.

  9. She is devoid of all thought or reason, bordering on brain dead,Leftard moron doesn’t begin to cover her lack of thought. There should be a I Q test plus a base understanding of the Constitution to be elected to federal office

  10. Politics is/are an amazing animal. Whatever your position, whatever your result getting legislation to a floor vote, it is a win. If you win, you fund raise and use your victory to establish your creds. If you lose, you win because you fund raise, and use your loss to energize your voters.

“No one in this world, ….has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

    – H.L.Menken, Sept. 19, 1926 edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune

  11. This woman is suffering from a case of STUPID and for these politicians there is no known cure. This person is a TAKER not a GIVER, just as the people she represents in her district and the people of Texas. Her record is clear to those who have witnessed her all the days of her political life.

  12. Hey, guys, cut her some slack. Maybe she meant empty boxes.

I actually think that she tried to lift a Barrett and thought it was an AR15. Everything is AR15!

  13. SJL IS SO RETARDED. Shes a total moron! I think her problem is she HAS PENIS Envy and probably can’t find anyone dumb enough to give her any so she picks on guns.

  14. This is what was elected to Congress, she and too many others like her. These are the people holding hearings, making our laws etc. God help our Republic. Frightening is it not?

    • “This is what was elected to Congress,”

It is the way things are supposed to work: representatives represent the values of the people represented; constituents. Maybe it is the constituents you object to. Not much to be done there.

  15. Is anyone else seriously being entertained by all the banter about “defiling the constitution”, “respect the rule of law”, etc, etc, etc.

Funny how a phone call defiles the constitution but not constantly infringing on our second amendment rights.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

  16. Sheila Jackson Lee is who she is, and who she was, when she ran for office and won the election. Scary as she is, the truly frightening part of the equation is the electorate who voted for her, and others like her.

    • These are the busy-bodies who in school used to run around organizing this or that committee, running for this or that student council position, class president, secretary or what not. They’re the same not as then only worse because they can create rules and laws that effect us all.

  17. When SJL visited the JPL in San Diego she was being shown pictures from Mars. She asked if the rover found the flag Neil Armstrong left there.

    Yeah she’s that smart.

  18. If it weren’t for the most ignorant constituents in Texas, she’d just be another fat black woman we’d make fun of on Youtube. A true stereotype. Cant’t speak English, no knowledge of history, utterly ignorant in the most true sense of the word.

  19. I’m guessing we’re all in agreement then that this byotch has the IQ of a below-average fence post, and is probably speaking to an audience of even dumber proportions. Texans like to jawjack about how everything is bigger in Texas. That very well may be true in this case. I’ve never seen a bigger bucket of BS in my life. She makes a blivit look empty.

  20. Like most of her type {NOT black or white — terminally stupid} she has absolutely no clue as to what she speaks, and compounds this by her unwillingness to learn.

  21. Ever hefted a Bushmaster Carbon 15? One of those weighs in about five pounds sopping wet. Not that you should have it sopping wet, just saying that thing is light!

Mine weighs a bit more with the after-market stuff I put on it but not that much. It’s my light weight plinker.

In fact, the box it came in added a fair chunk of the shipping weight!

  22. Haven’t yet been able to afford an AR, but some of the reasons I would like to some day are that: I could build one much lighter and more ergonomic, with more optics options, than my favorite old deer hunting rifle. As I get older, it becomes an accessibility matter. It’s sadly ironic to think that, partly because of major ignorance from government leaders, when I really could benefit from a modern AR, They may not be available (except, of course, to criminals).
By the way, maybe I’m the typical dangerous type the gun grabbers are afraid of: I’m a minister, teacher, musician, and have safely used firearms for 60 years, and neither I nor any of the 300 living or deceased members of my family that I have known have used arms against other humans other than in service to our nation.
In the long run, I hope and pray that good, God-fearing, intelligent people with common sense and conviction will have the courage to run for public office. We certainly need better stock than most of what we have now.

  23. This again shows the low I.Q. of most people in Congress and their staff. I quick search on the internet would give anyone a complete description of a AR15. They apparently don’t have the intelligence do this.

    • I really don’t think intelligence has anything to do with it. They don’t know because they don’t want to know. Knowing the facts would get in the way of what they want.

It’s the same fundamental problem underlining the title of the most famous propaganda film of WWII: Triumph of the Will.

  24. When banning AR style rifles does’t put a dent into gun dearths…then what?
    ALL rifles…? Shotguns? Handguns?
We all know the REAL end goal…
