Anyone see the movie Firestarter? The feds walk up to Irv Manders’ (Art Carney) porch to take a child with telekinetic powers. “We don’t need a warrant,” the lead agent tells “Charlie’s” family. “You do unless I woke up in Russia this morning,” Manders replies, aiming a scoped rifle at the government agents. The reason I mention this: reading anti-gun agitprop, I sometime get the feeling that yes, I did wake up in Russia this morning. Take the newsday.com post I’m a responsible gun owner, so I destroyed my gun . . .

The title alone tells you that there’s some serious Soviet-style, Orwellian word twisting going on. Comrades! The only responsible gun owner is one who destroys his gun! Anyone who doesn’t destroy his gun is responsible for gun violence, will be tried for his crimes and sent to gulag. Listen to your comrade Steve Elliott!

Although I’d like to believe I’m not party to the gun violence that stains the United States, I can’t. My grandmother shot and killed herself with a gun, and a few years ago my father shot and didn’t quite kill himself with one. A family friend lost a teenage son in an accidental shooting while he and his friends were playing with a gun. My stepbrother died in a murder-suicide with a gun, and the husband of one of my sister’s co-workers was killed in a mass shooting by a guy carrying three of them.

None of that happened with my gun, of course, but after every new mass shooting, I’m reminded that I, as a responsible gun owner, bear a portion of the responsibility for our nation’s gun violence.

And now it’s time for responsible gun owners to help end it.

‘Tis true! Time for you to save glorious United States of America from horrible gun violence! You are responsible! You want show trial? Bring me moose and squirrel!

After the recent shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon – after every mass shooting on a college campus, at a movie theater, in an elementary school or wherever – someone from the National Rifle Association or some other gun-rights group, or someone in Congress or running for president, goes on television and says we can’t fund federal studies on gun violence or have universal background checks of gun buyers or do anything that even hints of gun control because it infringes on the rights of responsible gun owners.

My gun is being used to argue against doing anything to even try to reduce gun violence in the nation. That’s what being a responsible gun owner means now – I’m responsible.

That is some major league f’ed-up you-know-what. But wait! There’s more! To exorcise (and exercise) his shame, Elliott decided to destroy his gun and convince others to do the same.

The Monday after the shootings, I disassembled my Ruger, clamped the pieces in a vise and cut them in half with an angle grinder. I sent the proper paperwork in to the state to report it destroyed. And then I wrote about it on Facebook, and included a hashtag: #ONELESSGUN . . .

Maybe cutting up a perfectly good gun is just a symbolic – some say stupid – gesture that will accomplish nothing. Maybe. But at the very least, there is #ONELESSGUN.

As is the way of such things, Mr. Elliott’s Facebook page contains no comments other than attaboys. And not even that, now.

Elliott wrote up this confession – presuming it wasn’t beaten-out of him by the ATF – and submitted it to the Washington Post. Who put his anti-pistol polemic on its newswire for papers like the New York Post that are ready, willing and able to dutifully disseminate anti-gun agitprop.

Why wouldn’t they? As Lenin said, “A newspaper is not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, it is also a collective organizer.” You have been warned. A lot.

  1. Well my Grandfather took his life with a garden hose and a 1948 Oldsmobile in 1957. I guess I should destroy my Subaru Outback and send the paperwork to the DMV. Dumbass!

    • None of my family members or any of my friends have harmed themselves of others with a gun. Am i just extra lucky? i don’t think so.
The author makes a much better case for better mental health care and maybe interventions. Especially in a family like his with such a poor track record.
He himself shows a diminished ability to use logic and judgement by blaming these incidents on the tools they used instead of the real cause.
Mental health and criminal activity are the root cause off all the problems in his family.

        • People with such toxic levels of un-reason should of course relieve themselves of any firearms they may posses. To harm an innocent gun in the process is inexcusable, but what else can we expect from such unfortunate folks?

      • The viral response to this latest double-think polemic should be dozens of different people publishing articles and videos about destroying/cutting up their Spoons .. before the spoons make them, or someone else, fat.

    • Don’t forget all the people killed by drunk drivers, pour all your alcohol down the drain.

And how many people die of medical malpractice each year? “Hey doc, come look at my new angle grinder…”

    • My cousin did the same thing about 10 years ago. He had PTSD from his time in Vietnam. It’s really sad when things like that happen.

    • Sounds like his family is really screwed up. That’s not my problem, but the safety of my family is and I want a gun to help insure that.

Also that poor Ruger P95 had many years of service left to give, what an A-hole he is for destroying it.

Now like a bunch of lemmings we are supposed to destroy our guns in self destructive fashion. Oh please what a dumbass.

  2. Hey, if he wants to be an unarmed sheep, that’s his problem. I feel no guilt at being a REAL responsible gun owner (and teaching my children what it is like to be the same, despite the efforts of my libtard hypocritical ex-wife), nor do I feel any obligation to protect people with sheep mentalities (unless they are family – that’s different – though as far as I know there aren’t any sheep here…).

    • You notice he cut up an ugly P series. Shiny polymer frame – what?
      He didn’t have a Hi-Point or a Bryco….

      Crazy like a fox methinks.

      • I’m wondering if he really is a “responsible gun owner;” or in reality, a non-gun-owning useful idiot quisling for Bloomberg & Co.

      • Hey man those p series pistols are still prettier than a glock still in my book lol, plus they aren’t bad shooter at all, owned one for bout 5 years. I shoot Cz’s now though soo i’m not sure Im going back to ruger handguns unless its a gp100

      • Sure, they’re ugly, but they’re built like a brick shithouse. He probably burned up his angle grinder cutting it up… #onelessanglegrinder

        • THIS!!!

As accurate as the sights let you be, over-engineered to apocalypse surviving levels. Too big to carry, but man it has it’s own kind of charm. Of course sold mine after a year like most folks do. A Glock looks and does everything it does just as well or better.

Not a bad piece, though. A sang shame this jack-arse couldn’t donate to someone in need with a pair and some functional emotions.

    • In fact I urge everyone of his supporters to go out and buy one or more firearms and then take them home and destroy them.

Luckily for us, these twats also don’t understand economics.

  3. As many close relatives have committed or attempted suicide, I’d day this guy should be on one of those banned from ownership for mental health reasons lists. Many of you would say yet another case of projection, and a scary one at that. And then further banned for his rant.

  4. If any others wish to destroy their legality obtained firearms, I will send you my FFL’s info so that you may have it shipped to him, I will pay for a legal transfer into my name, and “destroy” it for you for free. I will provide you pics of the destroyed firearm. (By that I mean random parts in a pile, they won’t know the difference.)

  5. If he wants to save us from gun violence, it sounds like he should sterilize his family line. Some serious mental health issues lurking in their DNA.

  6. As a car owner, I’m responsible for all the people killed by drunk drivers, so I dropped the drain plug and destroyed my engine, slashed my tires, and set the rest on fire. #ONELESSCAR

As a pool owner, I’m responsible every time a child needlessly drowns, so I drained my pool and took a jackhammer to the concrete. #ONELESSPOOL

It sounds like there might be some undiagnosed mental illness in his family. Maybe he should look into that before he gets to his father’s / grandmother’s age.

    • I’m on board for #onelesscar but I would like to attack the drunk driving epidemic with my new coalition to stop bottle abuse (csba) #onelessbottle

  7. #ONEMOREGUN. When I buy my new Walther PPQ 45, I’ll be sure to do the opposite of this symbolism driven simpleton. Thanks for the idea and advertising your home is unarmed now.

  8. Responsible?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

    Поразительный.

  9. Who’s with me to go about replacing the lost sole?
I picked up a used piece this month, but that doesn’t count. It needs to be brand newsky.

    • I’m assembling a new AK in 5.56×45. Does that count?

“I, as a responsible gun owner, bear a portion of the responsibility for our nation’s gun violence.”
Someone sold this dope a bill of goods.

  10. I figured he would have comments turned off and he deleted any ones that were against his move, while saving the few that were all for it.
I sent him an email telling him he should post his address so the criminals would know what home to hit next sense they love unarmed victims.

  11. A friend of mine was in the same battalion as Timothy McVeigh so I will only use U-Haul and will give Ryder negative google reviews.

  12. Probably good for Steve that he cut up his gun to clear his conscience. Some people probably shouldn’t own guns, and I think he’s one of them. I look forward to his next installment, where he cuts up his car to absolve him of his role in drunk driving deaths, and then his cell phone, for being an accessory to deaths and injury caused by texting and driving. Then, I expect that he will fill his swimming pool with concrete, cut up his kitchen knives, deliver all of his cleaning supplies to the recycling center and destroy all garden and hand tools. I think there is probably some sort of supprt group for this issue.

  13. I’m sure there’s a connection between” guns are fetish phallic symbols” and ” hit them with a angle grinder”. And that would be a NO,or Hell no.

  14. I’d look into the rest of the family for more mental illness in that writer’s case… some issues are genetic. I’ve lost people and I’ve been injured myself in car accidents, so… push my truck in a lake? Symbolic, perhaps, but mostly goofy and wasteful. I’ll take ANY guns folks don’t want!

  15. Looks like Robert either Googled or recognized the Irv Manders quote I posted yesterday.

There were some other choice quotes in that part of the book/movie, especially from Irv at the hospital, calling the Shop agents NAZIs, for instance.

  16. “. . . grandmother . . . father . . . family friend[‘] . . . son . . . stepbrother . . . husband of . . . sister’s co-workers . . . ” Perhaps former gun-owner comrade Steve has become shell-shocked at so many tragedies among relatives and acquaintances. If he was motivated by a personal sense of un-ease of being in the presence of his own gun then it is his right to dispose of his own property as he sees fit. (Albeit, I’m not clear that such un-ease was a motivation.)
At the same time, comrade Steve is resigning from his duty to secure his society as a free state. We have for so long out-sourced security to a standing army and then to a police force that we have lost touch with this fundamental duty.
To what end would any civilized community admit a man to membership where he shunned this duty? A woman accept a husband if he would not protect her and her children? A village if he would not participate in communal defense. A sovereign if he would not protect that sovereignty against enemies foreign or domestic?
In our constitution of government, we the people are sovereign. Our traditions hold us – at least males of military age – responsible for personal service in national defense. We can – and traditionally have – excused a few scrupulous of bearing arms from personal service; but only under an assumption that there will always remain an adequate number willing to do their duty. If not comrade Steve; and not those who subscribe to his appeal; who will serve?
We have seen very recently small local outbreaks of disorder. Professional forces, police and Guardsmen, have not been sufficient to restore order promptly. At some moments, officials have neglected their sworn duty to muster and deploy those professional forces. Under such circumstances as will arise inevitably, who will protect our wives and children?
We have also seen great outbreaks of disorder, such as in Syria and Iraq. Likewise, officials have neglected to muster and deploy professional forces adequate to the task. Neither local officials, nor nominally-authoritative national officials, nor those of neighboring nations near and far. Apparently, little exists of a community of nations. And, that which exists by way of a legitimate agency of force nationally or locally is not necessarily adequate to the exigencies of grave circumstances.
What shall we deploy to protect our families and neighbors? Particularly so if professional forces were to disarm us (as was the case at Katrina)? Comrade Steve doesn’t seem to have an answer for us.

  17. Right. Only gun he owned. It was a fairly cheap Ruger. Wanna bet that Ruger was never fired and he’d only bought it for this event?

    Lying sack of shit.

    • Think maybe Ruger has some case against this guy, using their goods for negative political campaigning?

Or injunctive relief against him or others doung it again? Hell, can Ruger get a statement from the guy -something to the effect that (even if the gun-cutter feels responsible, for the f’d upness surrounding him that) evil-(D)head gun-cutter doesn’t think Ruger is responsible?

  18. hmmm…self turn-in….

If he thinks simply owning a gun makes you responsible for “gun violence,” then it’s the gun that is responsible. Death penalty for ballistic weapons.

  19. Guns cause violence like penises cause rape. We need “penis control” legislation also. After all – its not the guys fault – it’s the penis.

  20. He sounds like someone who’s never owned a gun and made the whole thing up. Or, the unluckiest person in the Western world, to have known so many people who have died by their own hand or the hands of others using guns. And maybe someone with a family history of severe emotional disorders.

Did the WaPo or Newsday corroborate his “stories” before printing the essay? Or were they just satisfied with the narrative the way it is?

I’m calling bullshit. Somebody should check this guy out.

    • Yea. My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with this girl who saw a movie that talked about a shooting after ferris passed out at the 31 flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

  21. “the husband of one of my sister’s co-workers was killed in a mass shooting by a guy carrying three of them.”

How many degrees of separation is he going to go?

    • My dad knew a few people who got killed and wounded in Vietnam (being a medic, he personally patched up his wounded friends). We should probably cut it in half, just to be safe (you know, like Korea).

  22. So, by that logic, since he is a male and has a penis, but other males have used their penis to rape, he should absolve himself of his responsibility for those rapes by cutting off his own penis.

What a strange definition of “responsibility” and “responsible” people have these days.

  23. I knew several folks who are now dead because they overdosed. Let’s find some smugglers/dealers disassemble them, clamp them in a vise and cut ’em in half.

  24. With so many losers in his immediate family I think he needs to do the right thing and not pass on the insanity genes. What do the Japanese use when they end it all? I got a few crazies in my family and as far as I know none used a gun to end it all(although great uncle Jules might have at 97)…

  25. I simply cannot believe the lack of logic in these people, as though anything but mental illness played a roll in any of his examples. Additionally, I wouldn’t call suicide “violence”. How about the death penalty for third time violent offenders? #onelesscriminal

  26. I once acquired an AK that was similarly cut into pieces. I dutifully put it back together the way God and mickael intended. This of course was all before the unfortunate boating accident.

  27. Hey, that looks like an out of production Ruger P95! Curse you “responsible” gun owner for thrashing a perfectly good, classic full size semiautomatic pistol. That is just full on stupid.

  28. I fed my .45 at the range…then cleaned it and wiped it down.
    I’m a responsible gun owner.
    #semiautolivesmatter

  29. The positive is the Nation is being polarized and divided, maybe it needs too. It exposes the left to losing touch with why the USA was formed and is here in the first place. I am admittedly sick from hearing support for Socialism/Communism in campaigns. Seeing the MSM support it is deadly to the future of the USA.

  30. “My grandmother shot and killed herself with a gun, and a few years ago my father shot and didn’t quite kill himself with one. A family friend lost a teenage son in an accidental shooting while he and his friends were playing with a gun. My stepbrother died in a murder-suicide with a gun, ..”
Sounds like a history of mental health problems in his family.
    OR
Maybe his grandmother and grandfather were suffering from some terminal diseases and wanted to end their lives in the most efficient manner.
I can’t blame them for that.
There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to end your life when you are going to keep on suffering some excruciating pain for the rest of your short life.
Doesn’t Oregon and Washington state allow for suicide from painful, terminal diseases?
Who says you have to use a drug when a bullet is just as efficient?

    • Right, I support right to self-determination too; (While also believing we should be trying to talk them out of it right until the end. )

      Gun leaves a mess.

  31. I dunno. Listening to that guy’s history, there’s obviously some strong genetic mental issues coupled with insane bad luck. Probably a good idea that he did destroy his gun.

  32. Pretty funny, but he didn’t actually demil that pistol properly – in the eyes of the BATFE, you could install a new slide and barrel on the serialized frame, and it looks like it would still shoot.

  33. Ok, so I’ve never had a family member kill themselves, gun or not; none of my childhood friends were ever shot accidentally .. And nobody I even know was ever shot in a mass shooting.

Does that mean I can keep my guns in his eyes?

  34. I’ve been fishing four times with my new rod and reel and haven’t caught anything. Guess I’ll put them in a vice and cut them up, they’re stupid.

  35. Mr. Elliott has the right under the first amendment of our Constitution to write his little article. I may not like it but screw it. I have the right under the second amendment of our Constitution to keep and bear arms. He may not like it but screw it. God bless the USA.

  36. I’m calling bull**** on this whole story. This one writer knows more “victims of gun violence” (most self inflicted, mind you) than most combat veterans I know. Total propaganda , nazi style.

  37. If I descended from a long line of mental defectives like Steve Elliott does, I’d turn in my guns too. Also my knives. And my oven. And that bottle of drain cleaner under my sink.

I don’t think the problem here is guns…

Also calling bullshit on all of these above.

  39. He convinced me that guns are evil. Took all mine past the golden gate and dumped them.

So Frank at NSA can delete me from the files now.

  40. I know I’m wearing out the Judas Goat reference but come on…

The general population of our country seems to be de-evolving at an incredible pace. Dose any honest person really believe these lies…

  41. There’s no helping people who think like this. They’re lost. Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of them wandering around.

If he follows his own thought process to its fullest conclusion, he will also have himself castrated, because being male means he’s genetically responsible for all the rapes other people have committed. (I just hope he does it before he fathers any children.)

Also, like some other people here, I strongly suspect that this guy is liberally mixing his autobiography with fiction.

  42. This guy sounds to me like he lacks impulse control, or the ability to think things through. The same can be said of many perpetrators of crime…may be a good thing he doesn’t have a gun anymore.

  43. I almost knew someone who had a brother that was married to a woman that almost killed herself with a car made from the same kind of metal that a gun is. Is that enough to qualify myself as anti car, oh and I did total a Taurus one time, so #onelesscar!

  44. Someone needs to start a #TWOMOREGUNS campaign, where every time there is a #ONELESSGUN post, someone goes out and buys #TWOMOREGUNS.

  45. Sorry, no can do photo (I’m a computer troglodyte), but it was a CZ 75 D PCR. Really a sweet pistol.
But a 10 mm Glock-brand Glock is on my next-get list.
    OneMoreGun

  46. This whole line of thinking reminds me of an old Irish proverb:
Almost fell in the ditch… and almost didn’t!

  47. There are no words for this level of stupidity.

I’m glad he cut up his gun. We don’t need insane morons owning guns.

  48. I’ve lost more friends, family, coworkers family, and friends of friends to motorcycle violence than gun violence. I know of one *attempted suicide* by gun by a family member of a coworker (guy survived). I’ve lost one HS classmate to suicide by train.

So when people tell me the sky is falling because of gun owners…..yeah right.

  49. I don’t want any harm to come to this man, despite the foolishness of disarming himself and declaring his vulnerability to every would-be burglar or home invader in his vicinity.

Nevertheless, should some violent crime turn fatal for him, I’ll have no compunction laughing about it and declaring it to the world with the hashtag #onelessmoron.

  50. It’s a good thing we know that anti gun folks never lie, otherwise I might have doubts that this individual has been this close to so many personal tragedies involving guns. May he never suffer one that is actually caused by a gun, because he hasn’t yet.

  51. Seems like a waste of a gun, and his gun was minding its life so peacefully before he came and assaulted it with an angle grinder. I bet he did it because of white privilege.

    #blackgunsmatter

  52. Honestly , although I love ruger revolvers and rifles, I don’t really have wot of love for there semi auto handguns. I esp don’t like the larger framed ones. The pocket pistols they make are ok for what hey are. If it was one of those ugly beasts I can hardly blame him. If it was a pocket pistol unless he was a good shot he was not likely to hit anything but himself and it would be painful to shoot much through at a range.

  53. The hard-left Marxist and Islamists who infect our federal government plus the MSM media whores who protect them will gleefully lie, falsify, fabricate, slander, libel, deceive, delude, bribe, and treasonably betray the free citizens of the United States..

Second Amendment foes lying about gun control – The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting. The Second Amendment has nothing to do with personal self-defense.Firearms are our constitutionally mandated safeguard against tyranny by a powerful federal government. Only dictators, tyrants, despots, totalitarians, and those who want to control and ultimately to enslave you support gun control.

No matter what any president, senator, congressman, or hard-left mainstream media whores tell you concerning the statist utopian fantasy of safety and security through further gun control: They are lying. If their lips are moving, they are lying about gun control. These despots truly hate America..

These tyrants hate freedom, liberty, personal responsibility, and private property. But the reality is that our citizens’ ownership of firearms serves as a concrete deterrent against despotism. They are demanding to hold the absolute power of life and death over you and your family. Ask the six million Jews, and the other five million murdered martyrs who perished in the Nazi death camps, how being disarmed by a powerful tyranny ended any chances of fighting back. Ask the murdered martyrs of the Warsaw Ghetto about gun control.

Their single agenda is to control you after you are disarmed. When the people who want to control you hold the absolute power of life and death over your family, you have been enslaved. The hard-left Marxist and Islamists who infect our federal government plus the MSM media whores who protect them will gleefully lie, falsify, fabricate, slander, libel, deceive, delude, bribe, and treasonably betray the free citizens of the United States into becoming an unarmed population. Unarmed populations have been treated as slaves and chattel since the dawn of history.

Will we stand our ground, maintaining our constitutionally guaranteed Second Amendment rights, fighting those who would enslave us?

    American Thinker

  54. I’m with him, so I’m going to slowly destroy my guns by shooting bullets through them. Might take awhile, but it’s worth it in the name of stopping violence!

  55. It sounds like his family has a serious history of mental illness and he probably should get rid of his gun. However I fail to see how destroying my gun will prevent somebody else who doesn’t from using theirs in a criminal act.

  56. Since others beat me to cars/booze/the male reproductive organ (but w/ the strange omission of women) as items to be deemed responsible for the respective evils committed w/ them (per the deodand principle) & in keeping w/ the ‘spirit’ of Lil’ Stevumz Noble Act Of Moral Courage® which he doubtless (humbly, of course) hopes/expects will inspire untold Millions if not BILLIONS to follow his selfless example & Strike A Blow Agaynst Eeeeevilllll GUN Violence®, I nominate the following to join him in his Crusade & do as he did.:

ALL local/state/Federal LE, ALL private security firms/personnel &, naturally, ALL military orgs/personnel EVERYWHERE.

Because after all, if doing so saves ONE life, it’s worth it, right?

  57. This is a perfect example of the Liberal mind. Cut up my gun, does nothing but make Mr. Elliott feel self-righteous while making him less safe. Much like the left’s proposals regarding “common sense” gun laws. Why not just cut up your gun, fill out the paperwork and tell no one. Well, he wouldn’t get that pat on the back by his “friends” on Facebook. Very funny, I do so wish every Liberal would take the same approach.

  58. Make sure to cut up that deadly 10 round magazine too, the peoples republic of California clearly define that as a danger to the “community”. You did have a 10 round magazine in that firearm Mr. Sheeple I mean Elliot…? This whole story sounds made up and fake, no God fearing gun owner rolls his jeans up like that, I know, I know he is from CA but look at this guy.
