How low do you have to be to try to rob a Meals on Wheels driver? If it had happened in Texas, he’d be lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut. But this particular lowlife was operating in Columbus, Ohio, so…lower than a Michigan fan dotting the ‘i’?

Two un-named yoots tried to rob a septuagenarian MoW driver — a retired cop — after he’d delivered some food to an elderly man who had just left the hospital. One of the pair of crooks forced his way into the driver’s car, then pointed a gun at him. That didn’t go well for the yoot.

From The Columbus Dispatch:

A second teen took the driver’s wallet and phone, police said. The driver, who had a concealed-carry license, loaded his gun, and the second teen yelled that he had a gun. Police said the 14-year-old pointed a gun at the driver, and the driver fired three rounds at him. The second suspect ran from the scene and had not been arrested as of Friday night.

The wounded punk was still behind the wheel when police arrived.

The teen, believed to be 14 and shot in the side, was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in stable condition, said Sgt. Chris Odom.

According to Columbus police, authorities were called just after 11 a.m. to the 1200 block of East 18th Avenue, where neighbors had found the teen slumped in the seat of the delivery driver’s car.

A clear case of armed self-defense by a licensed concealed carrier. Exactly the reason so many Americans choose to own and carry a firearm. And one of hundreds of thousands (millions?) of successful, crime-stopping defensive gun uses that happen each year.

[Sgt. Chris] Odom said that it appears that the driver was justified in using force to defend himself.

“It is an affirmative defense to use force when you are in fear of being hurt or killed,” Odom said.

Manorris Stinson, who lives in the neighborhood, said the teens live nearby. And he wonders why they weren’t in school.

“My feeling is that they never should have messed with that guy,” Stinson said. “It’s wrong when his entire intention in being here is charity.”

Exactly.

“We have never had anything even remotely close to this,” [LifeCare Alliance president Chuck] Gehring said.

The driver, a 76-year-old retired police officer, was actually being paid $8.70 per hour plus mileage, necessary because there aren’t enough volunteer drivers, Gehring said. “He’s not paid enough to do what he’s doing.”

And after this little incident, he may not do it any more at all.

  1. “Police said the 14-year-old pointed a gun at the driver, and the driver fired three rounds at him.”

As a buddy of mine from way back was known to say when hearing a story like that : “Mess with the Bull, get the Horns.”…

        • A little judgmental, from our position of safety and security behind our little keyboard, aren’t we? What have YOU done lately to defend your life at the muzzle of another man’s gun? Ever been in an immediate-life-threat armed confrontation? Do you even know the actual facts of this incident, or are you just ASS-suming that what some flack from a newspaper wrote is Gospel right down to the terminology used?

          Thought so.

        • If he was carrying a single action semi-auto with no grip safety and that’s the only cc pistol he owned, he was a smart retired cop and probably trained back in the day to carry and deploy an off duty Browning Hi-Power Israeli style. Apparently his method of carry and deployment was effective!

  2. “The driver, who had a concealed-carry license, loaded his gun, and the second teen yelled that he had a gun. ”

Dude, carry it loaded. Otherwise, good job, sir.

    • I’m guessing Israeli carry (which I also think is a bad idea, but it’s not as bad as going empty mag “parade style” like some people do) and the smallbrain reporter doesn’t know the difference between chambering and loading.

      • “Parade Style”, I like that, made me laugh. far more intuitive than condition 4. I might modify it and say parade carry.

  3. Geez trying to rob a geriatric dude on a charity mission. What a punkazz yout…even a child is known by his doings. I’m not excoriating the old timer. Many folks older(than me!) do that. I’m not one of them…

  4. Age has very little to do with armed assault. Ask any Vietnam or other war vet. A 6 year old can kill you just as dead as a 60 year old. We just don’t see much of that in the USA – – YET. Situational Awareness applies to more than the 18-30 age group.

    • PS: Both of those ”yoots” will be out of juvie in no time, and back on the street. They did learn a lesson tho – next time they’ll just shoot their victim first and then collect the money/car.

    • Good observation, Gunny. Those yoots killing American GIs in Vietnam were trained to do that by the Communists, and those at home spitting on GIs laughed at the idea that we were trying to keep Communism away from the US. Surprise! Guess what we got coming, now?!

      • Those children were not “trained” by anyone, someone strapped a charge on their back or handed them a grenade with the pin pulled, pointed them in the right direction and simply said go do this or that and the child complied (most were old they would be given candy or food)…… There was no school for wayward waifs that taught “suicide bombing 101” to Vietnamese children….. On the other hand the American “yoots” that were protesting and spitting on soldiers were definitely brainwashed by Commie professors in our colleges and universities…

  5. First, fucking with strangers is dangerous. For that very reason. They’re strangers and you don’t know what they’ll do. Second, fucking with old strangers is really dangerous because the older we get the less a life sentence is a deterrence.

  6. School is out, our country is overrun by starving youths, forced into a life of crime, just to feed themselves.

For da chill-dren, for da chill-dren!

  7. Put demoCrap between the ears of morons and it never fails this is what you get. Thankfully the driver goes home and hopefully the perps spend time in a jail where some lifer can beat the sht out if them every day.

      • Seems like they already have a commitment to free stuff. What party is that, again? Not worried about any possibility of actual punishment? Which party was that, again? 14-year-old out on the street instead of in school, parents nowhere to be found? Which party, again? Yeah, they have chosen a party.

  8. You think I could get a job at some Leftist propaganda machine with that sort of writing?
    LOL /sarcasm

  9. Eventually, these teens will grow up to realize that they’ve made exceptionally bad life choices. As a result, they’ll join a more evolved street gang and carry better guns. Oh well. When one has the IQ of a sea turtle, career options are somewhat limited.

    • A guy I used to work with had trouble with all three of his sons. He said it taught him an important life lesson: “Never let your children grow up to become teenagers.”

    • Sadly, some of these kids are very smart. They just choose the bad path. I went to school with some geniuses who were bored with regular schoolwork and actively looked for trouble. It was fun and an adrenaline rush for them.

  10. That the MoW driver could draw, rack the slide, and fire before these thugs could react, indicates:

    1. He has had some training (retired cop).
    2. He has kept himself in good condition (reflexes, planning and executing his moves).
    3. These thugs were incompetent.

When I am finally inaugurated, I am going to promote programs for senior citizen fitness AND firearm training. As we age, some of us slow down and lose strength. Owning firearms and keeping our skills sharp increases our chances of not becoming victims.

  11. “Manorris Stinson, who lives in the neighborhood, said the teens live nearby. And he wonders why they weren’t in school.

“My feeling is that they never should have messed with that guy,” Stinson said. “It’s wrong when his entire intention in being here is charity.”

No Mr. Stinson. It is WRONG PERIOD when you stick a gun in anybody’s face and try to rob them.

  12. Well, it was in Columbus so nothing of import will happen to the 2 misguided future rocket scientists other than maybe a stern talking too and the taxpayers will pick up the hospital tab.

  13. Shooting is too good for anyone who steals, or otherwise screws with someone delivering food to shut-in seniors.

I’m thinking baseball bat time. The movie Casino and Nicky’s Death.

  14. Get a rope… That guy needs to be thrown under the jail… Defending himself against a couple of helpless teenagers that were probably just trying to prank him is appalling, who the fuk does this EX-cop think he is Dirty Harry/John Wayne? I say lock him up for child abuse/endangerment and make sure he understands that the poor misguided youths he has done irreparable harm to will most likely now require therapy and the financial support of the government for the rest of their lives… The shame of it all… Makes be feel embarrassed to be an American…

    • Oh the humanity!

Perhaps you can volunteer to be a MoW driver and be an example of how to do it differently. Show your de-escalation skills on drugged up angry youth. Just remember to check your privilege first.

      • Guess they forgot to explain “sarcasm” in the Land Down Under…. Isn’t it next week or next year or some such silly shit down there.. Oh no it’s Springtime, right? Fall in the Northern, opposite in the Southern…

    • Too many facts missin, and you are jumping to conclusions that will probably not pan out. I think they robbed him outside his vehicle, then hopped in to make their getaway. And the retiree simply walked up, the kid in the driver’s seat yelled “He’s got a gun,” and the retiree shot the kid in the driver’s seat through the door. Meanwhile his buddy hit the high road out the passenger door. Seems a little less self defensy when you look at it like that–more like he was defending his property than anything else.

  15. So he had the opportunity to draw on them but had to rack a round first? Could have cost him his life. Always carry with one ready to rock. If you are worried then you need to practice more or carry a gun with external safeties. There is NO reason to not have on in the chamber.

  16. OK, lot of computer commandoes wondering why this retired cop did not carry with one in the chamber?. Simple, because he is smart enough to know that accidental discharges happen and that the firearm he carries is a last “save my life” solution. Wake up and live in the real world.

    • Not very likely.

In nearly a half century of carrying a firearm everyday, loaded and chambered thank you, I have never had an unintended discharge.

There are millions of gun owners who can say the same.

The elderly gent did well. Maybe he’d just cleaned the gun, put a magazine in it and had not worked the slide yet. Could be any number of reasons for having to put a round in the chamber.

Including that stupid “Israeli Carry” nonsense.

      • Hell, he might have already tried to fire, and jammed the gun leading to a “tap-rack-bang”, juvie punks don’t know the difference.

  17. Maybe what was meant was not loading the firearm but merely cocking the hammer all the way. I carry with a full mag and one in the pipe and the hammer on half cock. Of course my first pistol was a single action revolver, and I still have 4 single actions and one double action. I carry a semi auto pistol normally because it is faster to get into action and fire multiple rounds.
