Republican Colorado Lawmakers Appeal To AG Bondi Over Sweeping New Gun Law

Colorado’s sweeping new unconstitutional gun ban, just signed by Democrat Gov. Jared Polis on April 10, is already becoming the subject of scrutiny at the federal level.

For some background, the new law, which will take effect in August 2026, bans the sale of the most popular selling rifle in America—the Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR)—unless Coloradans obtain from their county sheriff approval, based on subjective criteria, a permit-to-purchase semi-automatic firearms capable of accepting detachable magazines.

Under the law, the sale of semi-automatic firearms capable of accepting a detachable magazine will be banned unless those purchasing the firearms are vetted by a local sheriff and complete a firearm certification course. Sheriff approval to apply for a permit-to-purchase is based on subjective criteria, which was expressly rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2022 Bruen decision.

Additionally, county sheriffs can deny an application if they have a “reasonable belief that documented previous behavior by the applicant makes it likely the applicant will present a danger to themself or others.”

On Wednesday, state House Republicans sent a letter to U.S. Attorney Pam Bondi asking for her newly created Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force to look into the new law, which they consider unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.

“When state leaders ignore constitutional concerns and refuse to even allow a resolution requesting judicial review, federal oversight becomes not only appropriate, but absolutely necessary,” State Rep. Ryan Armagost said at a news conference announcing the action.

As we reported recently, many county sheriffs in the state continue to oppose the legislation. And some were present at Wednesday’s press conference announcing the request for a federal review.

“We have to do anything and everything we can to find out if there’s a way to overturn this,” said Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams. “If we really want to focus on preventing crime, we need to focus on how to hold criminals accountable and keep them in jail and prison longer for the crimes that they commit.”

AG Bondi’s Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force was formed in response to President Donald Trump’s February 7 executive order directing her to root out unconstitutional laws and rules on firearms and roll them back to protect the Second Amendment rights of all Americans.

“For too long, the Second Amendment, which establishes the fundamental individual right of Americans to keep and bear arms, has been treated as a second-class right,” Bondi said in announcing the task force. “No more. It is the policy of this Department of Justice to use its full might to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.”

Whether Bondi will review the new Colorado law remains uncertain. What is certain, however, is that the new law will face numerous court challenges in the future.

  1. Just do what Democrats do. Ignore it and call anyone questioning your actions racist.
Apparently you can go on like that for decades without any consequence. In some cases you’re directly rewarded by getting exactly what you want in the end.

Call it “righteous protest” or “truth to power” or some other such sloganeering. Maybe even “preserving democracy” though according to DNC vice chair Hogg they aren’t too fond of democracy anymore.

    • Just name your movement Black Rifles Matter and burn down cities while “Peacefully Protesting” against “The System”, and make sure to get the networks in on it with carefully edited video and sound bites. Use proven tactics to get what you want then silently disappear into the woodwork as quickly as you assembled seemingly out of nowhere.

Tell you what to do Steve old buddy old pal…Call you local chit chat radio program and say, “History Confirms Gun Control in any shape, matter or form is an Agenda Rooted in Racism and Genocide.” And to be fair invite polis and those who support Gun Control to try to say Gun Control in any shape, matter or form is not Rooted in Racism and Genocide.

  3. This is a poll tax. SCOTUS must finally declare all firearms permitting, training requirements and taxes prohibited as a poll tax.

  4. Sounds like a good idea to me. I mean if your legal and have nothing to hide what’s the matter with having a Sherrif give a person the thumbs up.
Then when you get all whacked out on zombie drugs, sht faced drunk, or someone says something that offends you and you First Blood Rambo the town it’s the sheriff’s fault because he gave you permission to have the assalty weapons.

    • The scope of judicial decrees is being hotly debated. “We” don’t like nationwide decrees at the appellate level, when “we” suffer a loss. But, “we” are in favor of nationwide decrees which benefit “us”. In the current battle in Colorado, “law makers” may have found a way to avoid trial at all, by enlisting DOJ (the current makeup of which will be ended in four years) as the Colorado agent to fight the issue at the national level. However. . . . . .

Bruen was a nationwide decree from the highest court. Howz that werkin out?

    • Not hardly. Have you bothered to read the Send Amendment? The ATF form covers your worries about all wacked out, etc. As to the rest of your nonsense, if one of those wacked out people wants a gun bad enough, there is this thing we call the “Black Market?” Ever hear of it? For your edification, criminals don’t bother to obey your “gun control” laws. Then of course, the AR-15 is not an “assault rifle”.An AR-15 is a gas operated, air cooled, semi-automatic rifle, which cannot fire “automatic” fire. Do you even know the difference between machine gun fire and semi-automatic? God save us from hoplophobes.

  5. What we really need–and will almost certainly never happen–is for the United States Justice Department to start prosecuting politicians and bureaucrats who enact and enforce such heinous laws which clearly deprive citizens of rights under color of law.

And before anyone chimes in that politicians and law enforcement have immunity, how about they hire attorneys at their own expense and try floating that argument at their criminal trials. Of course that will take a few years and meantime the accused politicians and bureaucrats must remain in prison until their trial because they have clearly shown themselves to be extremely dangerous to society.

Unfortunately, the above will almost certainly never happen which is why politicians and bureaucrats keep passing / enforcing such heinous laws–since they never face any punishment themselves.

  6. Yet another example of what are you going to do about it.

Fighting it in court costs millions and takes years. Doesn’t cost a lot to grease a law and ram it in.

  7. Wait until you find out about the registry requirement they’re trying to push through now.

They bankrupted the state so now they’re gonna try force the local LE and FFLs to pay for it too.

Looking at the total package of bills this year and what’s becoming law I bet Colorado ends up in the bottom half of the freedom index next year.

From #2 in 2014 to 17th this year, and I’m guessing sub-25 next year.

They get a few footholds in your cities and they’ll burn your state to the ground quick.
