CNN Chat Show Host Piers Morgan’s Parting Shot on Gun Control

Piers Morgan Tonight (courtesy deadline.com)

Piers Morgan’s final words on Piers Morgan Live:

I have lived and worked in America for much of the past decade, and it is a magnificent country. A land of true opportunity that affords anyone, even British chancers like me, the opportunity to live the American dream. The vast majority of Americans I have met are decent, hard-working, thoroughly dependable people. As my brother, a British Army colonel, says, “You’d always want an American next to you in a trench when the going gets tough.” . . .

But that’s where guns belong – on a military battlefield, in the hands of highly trained men and women fighting for democracy and freedom. Not in the hands of civilians. The scourge of gun violence is a disease that now infects every aspect of American life.
Each day, on average, 35 people in this country are murdered with guns, another 50 kill themselves with guns, and 200 more are shot but survive. That’s 100,000 people a year hit by gunfire in America.

Now, I assumed that after 70 people were shot in a movie theater, and then, just a few months later, 20 first-graders were murdered with an assault rifle in an elementary school, the absurd gun laws in this country would change. But nothing has happened. The gun lobby in America, led by the NRA, has bullied this nation’s politicians into cowardly, supine silence. Even when 20 young children are blown away in their classrooms.

This is a shameful situation that has made me very angry. So angry, in fact, that some people have criticized me for being too loud, opinionated, even rude when I have debated the issue of guns. But I make no apologies for that.

As Sir Winston Churchill said: “If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time – a tremendous whack.”

My point is simple: more guns doesn’t mean less crime as the NRA repeatedly says. It means more gun violence, death and profits for the gun manufacturers. And to those who claim my gun control campaigning has been “anti-American”, the reverse is true. I am so pro-American that I want more of you to stay alive.

But I’ve made my point. I’ve given it a tremendous whack. Now it’s down to you. It’syour country; these are your gun laws. And the senseless slaughter will only end when enough Americans stand together and cry: Enough!

I look forward to that day. And I look forward to seeing you all again soon. Goodnight, thank you, and God bless America. Oh, and while I’m at it, God bless Great Britain too.

[Please note: ad hominem attacks (a.k.a., flames) against Mr. Morgan will be deleted. Please keep it civil.]

  1. I find it so odd that he continues to beat that dead horse. It’d be like an American going to England and advocating for the elimination of the monarchy. Incessantly.

When someone moves to a new place, it is incredibly rude to ask everyone else to change their ways to suit them. These diatribes demonstrate an arrogance that’s hard to fathom. You’d think after his ratings plummeted, he would have moved on to different topics.

I guess some lessons have to be learned the hard way.

That is the very nature of statists — they claim to know better than everyone else and they insist on implementing their “solutions” regardless of what anyone else thinks or wants.

    • Its the British monarchy thing, he is absolutely bewildered by the concept that the government is limited in what it can do. That it can’t just snap its fingers and take away a right that was listed as number #2 on a list of 10 absolute rights guaranteed to the American people, bought with blood, and fought for against german mercenaries purchased by the British crown with taxes stolen from a people given no voice in their future. You know what he thought of the Great Britain in V for Vendetta? A good start.

Fighting for democracy and freedom – according to piers above, civilians shouldn’t be doing this. When has the “military” in recent times ever been fighting for “freedom”

    • From the end of the second world war until the collapse of the soviet empire the American military fought for your freedom in a cold war that got hot on a regular basis. It amazes me when people can look at Stalin and Mao and not believe that they would have spread their brand of slavery world wide if not for the checking influence of the US and it’s military.

The fact that we’re able to discuss these matters on this site is proof that your freedom was protected.

Isn’t that what counts? The rest of his complaints are nothing but an opportunity for the writers… and many of reviewers fall into the same trap… to show off their ability to be creative with metaphor. And in the end it all boils down to opinion. and in the end, opinion that has zero to do with the shoot ability of the gun as evidenced by this review. ‘great shooting, reliable gun but let’s nitpick and over exaggerate the things we personally don’t like.’ Why not just state the facts… it has a loaded chamber indicator we feel is too large and un necessary… it has an external safety you may find too small to operate without practice… it has a double action only trigger and the pull is long. In other words, be objective. Isn’t that what a review is supposed to be??

The Boberg actually has less felt recoil than a Kahr PM9, Kimber Solo, or a Rohrbaugh R9 and is smaller than either. However this quality pistol as with most is out of the price range of some people.

SOME of those “highly trained men and women” are “civilians” — members of the National Guard or Reserves of the Armed Forces of the United States.
SOME “civilians” are honorably discharged veterans of our Armed Forces, who have reverted to “civilian status”.
ALL of them were “civilians” before they became “highly trained men and women” in service to their country.

  17. IF any of the anti-gun crowd can produce a bill that would actually stop people from doing things that are ALREADY illegal, I would support that bill 100%. The core problem with all gun control laws is that they try to prevent behavior that is already illegal by banning things that have legitimate legal uses and are not bad or illegal in and of themselves under the premise that these laws will be obeyed by the very people who are intending to break other laws. If gun control actually worked as advertised it would be completely and utterly unnecessary because other laws already cover the very behaviors gun control laws are allegedly targeting. Criminals, by their very definition, break the law and people intent on doing harm and violence will always find ways of doing so whether or not they have access to firearms and those that wish to use guns can always find ways to obtain them even if they are barred by law.

What he is really saying is that guns only belong in the hands of government. Sounds more like a concept of tyranny than one of freedom and liberty. Morgan may have lived here for a decade, but he does not have the slightest concept of what it means to be an American. He is right when he says it is our country and our laws, but he does not believe that in his heart. Gun crimes are already illegal. No amount of extra legislation can make it any more illegal and while the Constitution does not guarantee safety. 19. Saw the March 28, 2014 show about the Bernelli shotgun builds last night.
    Have some questions to ponder.

    1) If you have the CNC machine already programmed — why not just mill out another muzzle brake while working on the auto version’s trigger?, had plenty of time. Why wouldn’t you want to give the Bernelli reps both guns at their “best”? Please not another fake deadline — it represents your fine employees and shop to be inept.

    2) Did anyone ever see the Bernelli Pro Shooter “hold down” the trigger on the full auto version shotgun?
I only saw him operate it like the semi-automatic ((as habit ?) pulling the trigger for every shot) — which was nearly as fast.

    3) What does the blowing up of a van have to do with truly showing the added performance of your modifications?
Why not setup a shot-counter and other measuring devices to get some real numerical data. Don’t dazzle them with lights and glitter — if you can dazzle them with the facts?

And the “raid” on the zombie trailer, that just made the Bernelli Pro Shooter look stupid, I have lost respect for the Bernelli brand and him.

I realize this season’s episodes are already in the can, but please stop with all the MOJO pyrotechnic explosions — its ignorant. Have some pride in the products you produce and truly feature them, not all the smoke and mirrors routines — it demeans and undermines your brand and shop.

  20. Mr. Morgan is entitled to his opinion and not much more. There’s a little thing called a Constitution here that allows its citizens the right to bear arms. If only the military and other government entities are allowed to posses guns because they are “highly trained” I see a huge problem with that. The war on guns will be like the war on drugs. An epic failure that will cost billions. But in the meantime, it will create jobs and make people insanely rich. There will be no less guns and no less violence. However, you will keep guns away from reasonable people, who are sane, law-abiding citizens.

I am for gun regulation in terms of background checks and trying to ensure guns don’t get in the hands day 1 of somebody who obviously doesn’t want to use it for home protection or target practice. But the notion of banning guns and such is just laughable. It just creates a huge underground black market.

Anybody hear of Leland Yee? He was anti-gun and signed all kinds of legislation. Turns out, he always was making a lot of money gun running.

  28. Olathe Gun Shop in Olathe, KS. Went in after work (dress clothes, nice haircut, clean shaven) looking for a basic 1911 to turn into a fun range-gun project. The clerk was hostile from the moment I stepped foot into the store, demanded to know what I wanted to buy. A little taken aback by his tone, I stated I was interested in seeing their 1911s. I explained what I intended to do with a 1911 — customize a good basic model and take it to the range. One of the other clerks actually laughed at me because I said I enjoyed working on my last 1911 and wanted to work on another one.

The first clerk glared at me, rolled his eyes and in stentorious tones explained that if I were to work on my 1911 while it was loaded (completely odd, since I had never suggested doing such an idiotic thing), I probably would shoot myself with a negligent discharge if I pulled the trigger… and that it would hurt a lot. At this point, I decided to give into morbid curiosity and just humor him to see how far down the rabbit hole would go…

He showed me one 1911, then told me that ATI 1911s are better than RIA 1911s. He then demanded to know how much I was planning to spend. I had budgeted around $800 for my initial purchase but told him 400-600 to keep from committing to anything but still seeming serious for a low-budget build. He started talking about concealed carrying a 1911, that I should get a threaded barrel in order to install a silencer on it, and eventually worked his way down the counter in an attempt to convince me that I should look at a nice .380 and take a concealed carry class next month. Then he explained that they were closing up shop, so I’d need to go.

On the way out, I saw the owner and asked about the concealed carry course. He didn’t even look at me, just grunted. Wished them both a nice day and went out the door with my money in my pocket and the knowledge that they just aced themselves out of a chunk of change.

Contrast the above with Cabela’s in KC, where you pay more but they encourage you to look at different models and treat you like an intelligent human…

The NOH8 campaign is simple – Stop The Hate Against People That Aren’t Like You whether they are gay, straight, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, crossdressers, fat, skinny, bald, tattooed, etc.

In regard to the ProRKBA community, I wish you all would find something as simple as NOH8 to get our point across to the anti-gun activists that was as simple and direct. Gun owners are all across the board, and there is no real focus. Conservative Religious pro-RKBA people hate on gays, yet Pink Pistols is all about non-100% Hetero people supporting the RKBA. There are pro-gun democrats, yet the republican party and died-in-the-wool republican voters would never support a pro-gun democrat.

You all need to find a way to drop the prejudice and preconceived impressions of what a GUN OWNER REALLY LOOKS LIKE. Not all gun owners look like the guys on Duck Dynasty or some kind of psuedo black ops weekend warrior.

The media outcry over the Zimmerman (hispanic) shooting Martin (black) incident was HUGE, but can you imagine if a drag queen shot some milita-looking guy? I’m willing to bet the Conservative Religious nutjobs would start hanging out in parking lots outside drag clubs just to physically assault the men in drag, if not many of the patrons.

Sigh… sadly many in America will never move beyond their narrow little world.

But how about the fact that an elected representative of the the People was not only misusing his power for personal gain, he was also helping criminals import illegal machine guns into our country. That’s the worst part of the whole thing, but the anti-gun side is so stuck in their small thinking that they can’t even see that.

  34. Guns are implements of killing, if we are to have them as part of our society — and yes, we have — we should do what we can to limit their capacity to kill the innocent while preserving a Constitutional right to possess them.

Huh, you know that actually aligns really well with my own attitude. The key observation being that the phenomenon of a “gun” killing an innocent really begins with a decision firing in the brain of the person holding it.

So, education (like making the 4 rules and other gun facts, like their mechanics, universally taught in school) is a good strategy to guard against people behaving irresponsibly or treating firearms with a cavalier attitude. If everyone recognized safe gun handling practices we would naturally increase awareness of people behaving suspiciously or unsafely.

However, education alone cannot address the problem of those who simply do not care for the goodwill of others and would harm innocents for their own gains or pleasures. How do you stop someone like that? By stopping them. With force. And the more people who are willing to employ force against evil and equipped and prepared / trained to do so, the safer will will all be. Fans of “protecting the innocent” would do well to educate themselves about the realities of firearms and stop confusing the willingness of a gun owner to use deadly force with the desire to do so.

I don’t find that permits and background checks are effective at preventing the wrong people from acquiring firearms. I’d just want those laws still in place so that we can take away someone’s trailer-mounted heavy machine gun if that person, subject to due process, is determined to be a unsuitable for firearms ownership.

Likewise, all the same civil liability laws would still be in place. You own every round, after all. So unless you also own many wide open acres where no one will hear this thing or be hit by it, then it’s not going to happen. If you want to store this thing in your garage, I’m ok with that; but don’t think you’re going to fire it off in the cul-de-sac without losing it and your freedom.

Yeah I got to shoot the 16 because we were on a float with a west coast seal team that had them in the armory so I got to shoot them a little. As for the scar 17 I was able to carry it in afghanistan on my last deployment with no problems.

A weapon like this is extremely expensive to obtain or operate which makes them unavailable to all but a small portion of the population even if there were no laws governing possession and use of such a weapon. Even to those who can afford to buy such a thing there are very people few who would be interested in buying one. If they were interested and able then they would almost certainly be a wealthy collector. Additionally, it is very difficult to hide and transport such a weapon because of its size. Irresponsible people don’t tend to have the ability to amass fortunes and there are heavy weapons in the hands of collectors out there, which you never hear about for that reason. I don’t see any good reason to restrict civilian ownership of something almost no one can obtain anyway. I would draw the line not at the type of heavy gun but rather at ammunition types. HE shells and rockets are questionable and anything that has a shaped charge in it would be a no-go. Chemical shells would not be okay. Obviously biological and nuclear weapons are out. Depleted uranium would be an environmental nightmare so that is out.

  60. Nick. The money you have in it is a “sunk cost”. That means you aren’t getting it back while its sitting in your safe, and a big part of it is gone for good to depreciation which DG and others are telling you is accelerating…

On the other hand, you can think of the $1000 cash offer, or (maybe some amount of hours of instruction by someone bartering,

as an investment with ROI if your flying lessons are going towards any future employment.

If flying is just for fun, then its all expense of course. And well worth it. Go for it!

Whatever you do, dont buy a sailboat.
    Or a horse…

Personally, absolutely none of my close friends do.

Most are like myself and wouldn’t enter one of those sites at gun point.

Also, it wont last forever and it’s so easily defeated that never minding that new guns purchased from licensed dealers aren’t the weapons their looking for, it’s not likely to ever solve a single crime, period.

I don’t mean to beat a dead horse but laws that can be rendered useless by little Johnny Windowlicker in 10 minutes with a $2.00 file ought never to be passed in the first place. Just like the ‘ballistic finger print’ laws that can be defeated in minutes with a file, or by simple wear, micro stamping is a windmill tilting exercise that has no bearing on crime whatsoever. Just as ballistic figure printing has resulted in basically no crimes solved this does nothing for public safety it’s either ill conceived, a back door attempt at prohibition, or both.

  65. So, the NRA values of Freedom, Equality, true anti-racism (by training free and freed Black men during the Civil War), and the Constitution, are not the values of “The Constitution State”? The Cognitive Dissonance on the Left is just insane…
