Yesterday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam wiped the shoe polish off of his face long enough to hold a press conference and announce that he’s calling a special session of the state legislature. The session’s sole purpose: consider a raft of gun control proposals — an “assault weapons” ban, red flag law, magazine capacity limits, among others — that Northam wants enacted.
The Governor’s move is pure partisan politics cloaked in the guise of doing something about gun violence. The Virginia Beach shooting, perpetrated by a disturbed individual who had bought his guns legally, provided Northam the ideal cover he needed.
The Citizen’s Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms sees Northam’s cynical effort for what it is. Here’s their press release . . .
BELLEVUE, WA – Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is using the tragedy at Virginia Beach to resurrect a hackneyed gun control agenda that would not have prevented the crime, while distancing himself from the scandal that should have forced him from office, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.
Northam has proposed a sweeping gun control package that includes so-called “universal background checks,” bans on so-called “assault weapons” and suppressors, extreme risk protection orders, child access prevention and other restrictions, as reported by USA Today.
“We’ve got a news flash for Northam,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “The killer in Virginia Beach had already passed multiple background checks, including an enhanced check to legally purchase a suppressor. The incident didn’t involve a so-called ‘assault weapon,’ but two handguns. There was no indication that the gunman was an extreme risk to anybody, and this awful event didn’t involve a child gaining access to any firearm.
“So tell us, Ralph,” he continued, “just what part of your extremist gun control wish list do you think would have prevented what happened in Virginia Beach?”
Reports quote Northam rejecting arguments that it is “too soon after the tragedy to address the issues.” Gottlieb said this is one point on which he can agree with the scandal-plagued governor.
“It’s never too soon to show the emperor has no clothes,” he observed. “Northam has dusted off the same ragged old gun prohibition agenda that has been proposed by other anti-rights politicians in the past and rejected time after time. None of the things he wants would have made even the slightest difference, and he knows it.
“The Virginia Beach killer purchased his guns in 2016 and last year,” Gottlieb noted. “This was no spur-of-the-moment decision that might have been averted by any of Northam’s recommendations, including the governor’s one-gun-per-month purchase limitation scheme.
“What happened Friday in Virginia Beach was undeniably a tragedy,” Gottlieb concluded, “and it would be another tragedy for Northam to penalize millions of honest Virginia gun owners for the senseless act of a lone, disturbed individual. Northam’s extremist mandates would not prevent a single crime or save a single life.”

Looks like I need to find a few places to send some money to. I would hate to see any of this crap pass here as we have a wall of gun control stupidity surrounding us here in NOVA already. I’ll fire off a few letters while I am at it. I’m sure where I live my rep is a demo-commie, but they at least need to get a flood telling them to support the rights of Virginian’s, not strip them away because of one person who abused them.
These ideas need to die on the legislative floor, like Northam described letting newborn babies die.

Rest assured that, when somebody thinks of it, there will be a strong push for ‘retroactive background checks’ for people who already OWN a gun, just to make sure that they can still pass a background check.
After all, just because you passed one ONCE doesn’t mean that you’re not all sudden-like going to go ‘Resigning Municipal Employee’ and massacre some people. It happens. . .
This could be called “Closing the Already-Got-One Loophole.’ It could include your daily reporting to Law Enforcement your mental status, for example, if you are feeling homicidal or suicidal or like that there. It could be like a ‘Reverse Red Flag Law’, where you turn your own guns in to Government until they can prove that you should get them back.
This COULD be the magical 22001st gun law that actually WORKS!

VA is turning into MD slowly but steadily. VA already is blamed for guns found in other states so the left has a hard on for gun bans in VA.
The influx of MS13 into Nova will be met by calls for disarmament and we k ow how that will turn out.
I considered moving to VA but I’m having second thoughts now. The legislature will be flipped in the next election cycle and barring a miracle you’ll have Statists controlling the state.
VA has been blamed for guns in other states since at least the 1980s.

I live in NoVA and my Congressman and U.S. Senators are Democrat progressive liberals, and my state senator (Dick Saslaw) and my delegate are all Democrat progressive liberals, all against citizen gun rights and more than willing to pass a sweeping anti-gun legislative agenda in the special session just announced. And will Gov “Blackface” Northam sign these bills, if passed? Does a bear shit in the woods? In announcing the special legislative session to get more gun control, the governor’s appeal was based on emotion, haste, bloody shirt waving and never letting a tragedy go to waste in an effort to get his political agenda passed.
Fortunately, we have the Virginia Citizens Defense League, which has been a very active and effective organization at preserving our rights. And the legislature is (just barely) Republican majority and votes on party lines, so that looks like the governor and his cronies might have some difficulty getting any anti-gun bills passed – this time. If the legislature flips next election, God help us. I’ll be writing to my state senator and delegate (much good may it do me).
If you live in Virginia, this is the time to act and let your legislators know in no uncertain terms how you feel about Northam’s proposed anti-gun bills, whether they be Democrats or not. And donate to VCDL – they can’t do it for us without funds. I’d rather donate my money to them than to the NRA – who knows where it goes when that bunch gets it?

It’s amazing that politicians can continue to blabber on about all these laws when the only thing that unites them is that, in almost every case, NONE of the proposed laws would have had any effect on stopping the tragedy.
Given that the shooter was (a) black (b) trained in the military (c) a public employee and (d) a legal gun owner, and for Democrats it can never be about mental problems, it has to be about the guns themselves and punishment for all legal gun owners. This shooter perfectly fits the worst gun grabber narrative. Since random violence cannot be predicted, even when it can, and all gun owners have the potential to become spree killers, all must be disarmed.
